DATA-DRIVEN DISCOVERY<br />

INVESTIGATION<br />

National Academy of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

member Kenneth Reifsnider has<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed the UTA faculty to lead a<br />

new Institute for the Predictive<br />

Performance of Materials and<br />

Structures. “We will focus on<br />

materials systems,” he says.<br />

“There is rapid growth <strong>in</strong> this area<br />

of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.” Dr. Reifsnider<br />

is the third member of the NAE/<br />

NAS to jo<strong>in</strong> the University <strong>in</strong><br />

recent years.<br />

experimental economics, Kay-Yut<br />

Chen researches why people<br />

make the decisions they do <strong>in</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Such data-driven <strong>in</strong>sights<br />

are critical for a company’s<br />

bottom l<strong>in</strong>e. “We need to have a<br />

community of bus<strong>in</strong>ess executives<br />

well-versed <strong>in</strong> the field,” says the<br />

College of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess professor and<br />

former pr<strong>in</strong>cipal research scientist<br />

at Yahoo Labs. “The results<br />

could change the bus<strong>in</strong>ess world.”<br />
