About the Authors
Margaret Mooney is a former National
Weather Service meteorologist who
leverages early career experience with
a more recent degree in public policy to
promote weather and climate education
as avenues towards stewardship and
sustainability. Margaret can be reached
at margaret.mooney@ssec.wisc.edu
Steve Ackerman is a professor in
Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and
the Director of the Cooperative Institute
for Meteorological Satellite Studies at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His teaching often highlights the use of
technology to convey information and
address misconceptions. Dr. Ackerman
can be reached at steve.ackerman@
ssec.wisc.edu
Galen McKinley is an Associate Professor
in the Department of Atmospheric and
Oceanic Sciences at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. McKinley’s
research involves carbon cycling
in the global oceans and the Great
Lakes. Dr. McKinley can be reached at
gamckinley@wisc.edu
Tom Whittaker has been writing software
related to the atmospheric sciences since
the 1960s. While his degrees are in
meteorology, he focuses on visualization,
analysis, and understanding of earth
science data and information. He is the
author of many of the interactive applets
found at: http://profhorn.aos.wisc.edu/
wxwise Tom can be reached at tom.
Tommy Jasmin is a Systems Developer
at the University of Wisconsin Space
Science and Engineering Center (SSEC),
in Madison. At SSEC, Tommy works
primarily with scientific data processing
systems and visualization tools. Tommy
A District-wide Community Action Plan
For Educators that have longer than a week and seek broader community engagement,
there are two, district-wide action plans available for download. The 10-10-10
plan breaks activities down into elementary, middle and high school level with gradeappropriate
opportunities and incentives for students to investigate the size of their
individual and household carbon footprint and identify actions to reduce carbon
pollution. The 2011 Moving Planet plan encourages students to reduce fossil fueled
trips. Both were coordinated with 350.org, an international organization working to
raise awareness of human-induced climate change.
Summary
There are over three dozen climate-related lesson plans created by science teachers
freely available for download from the UW Global and Regional Climate Change
course. And the list is growing! An internal survey conducted in the fall of 2011
revealed that 28% of teachers in the Climate Literacy Ambassadors Community tend
to only use the lesson plan they created while 45% have also used other teachers’ lesson
plans. We’re confident that there is a lesson plan available that will help improve your
students’ understanding of climate change.
