In Syria, 83% of <strong>children</strong> surveyed said <strong>the</strong>y would particip<strong>at</strong>e in <strong>the</strong> relief effort if given <strong>the</strong><br />

“We would like to help o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>children</strong> by raising <strong>the</strong>ir spirits, playing with <strong>the</strong>m and<br />
entertaining <strong>the</strong>m. We belong to one gener<strong>at</strong>ion, and we understand wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y lack<br />
and need, both psychologically and emotionally. We would love to take part in relief<br />
efforts and help o<strong>the</strong>r Syrian refugees and friends to help wipe away <strong>the</strong>ir tears and <strong>the</strong><br />
pain of being away from <strong>the</strong>ir country.” 4<br />
“After <strong>the</strong> 2004 tsunami, <strong>children</strong> made significant and concrete contributions to <strong>the</strong><br />
relief efforts. Apart from saving o<strong>the</strong>rs, providing emotional support and helping find<br />
food and shelter, <strong>children</strong> also led group prayers and joined adults on guard duty.<br />
Yet despite such effort in <strong>the</strong> early stages of <strong>the</strong> emergency response, <strong>children</strong> found<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves soon sidelined when troops and intern<strong>at</strong>ional aid agencies arrived and took<br />
control of <strong>the</strong> relief work.” 5<br />
