OCTOBER 2015
September 2015 - A New School Year
Welcome back to a new year at Devizes
School.
The year finished on a real high in July
with our wonderful annual House
celebrations on the quad. We
celebrated the success across the
school but also said farewell to a
number of staff, including Mr Irons who
was retiring after thirteen years at the
school. The event was marked by gymnastic
displays, musical recitals and
readings, all performed by our talented
students guided and marshalled by the
master of ceremonies, Mr Herring. It
was an emotional goodbye, reflecting
on the legacy and success Mr Irons has
brought to the school and the many
positive changes he has implemented.
Miss S Marshall - Acting Headteacher
We said goodbye in a humorous way with staff and students wearing
‘Malcolm’ face masks and dancing to the Proclaimers “500 miles” as he will
be embarking on a walk around the South Coast in aid of a charity close to
his heart “Youth Mental Health”.
Parent Pay and Cashless Catering
ParentPay:
We are proud to announce the introduction of
ParentPay and Cashless catering
ParentPay is an on-line facility that will enable you to pay for school meals, trips and many other
items on line. No longer will you have to route around to find change for school meals or send
your child into school with cash or cheques, hoping that they remember to take out of their bag
and hand it in!
There will be letters home before half term with your unique log in details for ParentPay. Once
you have this information simply log into www.Parentpay.com and follow the instructions.
The first thing you will be able to pay for is school meals; payment for trips and for other
activities will be available as they crop up from January 2016.
Cashless Catering:
Ever wondered what your child has had for lunch? In partnership with our new caterers,
Aspens, we are introducing Cashless catering. By using this in conjunction with ParentPay you
will be able to log in and see what has been purchased that day. Full details about cashless
catering will be sent with the letter about ParentPay.
There will be a reply slip that needs to be returned as soon as possible to enable us to
set up the accounts needed for students to be able to continue to use the catering
facilities.
Keep an eye out for the letters, activate your ParentPay account and return the catering account
authorisation slip as soon as possible. Thank you.
Devizes School Free Time
Devizes School has funds to support families
who are affected by low incomes to help their
children participate in activities and clubs, both
on and off school site including help towards the
costs of music lessons. Families must be in
receipt of benefits which include Free School
Meals, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit
and Income Support (the full list of benefits is
available on the Parent Zone of the school
website in Other Information).
Examples of activities are dance lessons, sports
club membership and Guide/Scouts
subscriptions. The maximum amount of
financial support available is £100 per academic
year. The scheme has to be applied for each
academic year and evidence of benefits has to
be provided.
For more information look on our website or
contact Mrs Eaves, the Bursar on:
What’s Going on in Sixth Form?
Sixth Form Ambassadors:
With the new school year we welcome our new
Sixth Form Ambassador Team into their roles.
Devizes Sixth Form use the term Ambassador to
match the title used at many universities for their
representatives. This group of students will be
working hard to organise both charity and Sixth
Form social events. You will find these students
wearing their t-shirts at many events in the school
year including Sixth Form Open Evening and Sports
Day. When visiting us, please feel free to ask these
students for help or information about the Sixth
Form or Devizes School as a whole. They will
always be happy to help.
Bottom row, left to right: Kayleigh Davies, Mia Scott,
and Sam Bartley. Middle row: Sam Beale, Hayley
Stevens, Beth Baross (Beth has left us, subsequent
to the photo). Top row: Iona Johnstone,
Josh Parkes and Laura Barr
Digital Champions:
Every year, students from Year 12 are invited to
volunteer at Devizes Library to be Digital
Champions. Our students will assist those in the
community with less experience of using a
computer, whether it be with setting up email or
accessing online resources. The programme, run
by Mike Strong, Volunteer Co-ordinator, is so
popular that there is currently a waiting list for the
community to access the service. Our students
have worked brilliantly for several years in this
project and we see it growing stronger with each
passing year.
For more information regarding the Digital Inclusion
Project please go to http://www.wiltshireonline.org/
index.php/digital-inclusion
So what happened to our Year 13 leavers?
Back in August, our Year 13 Sixth Form students
got their A level exam results, an event filled with
anticipation and some trepidation by everyone
involved! Pleasingly the results went very well and
the vast majority of students gained the grades
necessary for their next step.
That next step can follow a variety of different paths
and this year was no exception. We have students
who are pursuing careers and training abroad in
addition to those in Britain. 83% of students are
going onto higher education at a range of
Universities, primarily in the South West, but also
across the UK. Of those students, 14% were able
to accept offers from Russell Group Universities.
As you might expect, a wide range of courses are
being started as this article is written. Examples
include Physics at Exeter; Ancient History at Cardiff;
Fine Art at Bath Spa; Chemistry with Industrial
Experience at Heriot Watt and Digital SFX at Edge
Hill. A wide range, we think you will agree! By the
time you read this many parents in Devizes will
have dropped their sons/daughters off at University
for the first time and be coming to terms with some
changes at home as a result.
The remaining students have selected other paths
which include apprenticeships or employment with
local and national businesses. Gap year students
are venturing as far afield as Australia and Canada,
before returning to commence Higher Education.
We wish them the very best in the next stage of
their lives and are proud of their success whilst with
us.
It would be fantastic to hear of their future success
too!
Mrs N Corry - Assistant Head of Sixth Form

Camp Xtra 2015
180 lively 8-15 year olds signed up and took on
Camp Xtra 2015. Seventeen sports and activities
were on offer as well as a literacy and numeracy
week which ran in the mornings. The children who
attended the literacy and numeracy then had the
choice of what afternoon activity they would like to
take part in.
The activities which ran were:
Rugby, Football, Racket Sports, Extreme Sports
(including Archery), Power Kiting, Orienteering,
Cookery, Trampolining, Gymnastics, Ultimate
Science, Mod Roc, Musical Theatre, Animation,
Photography, Creative Felt, Junior First Aid and
Kayaking.
The team of Sixth Formers and volunteers were
fantastic and the driving force behind the success
of the week, they really couldn't do enough to help
and it was mentioned they were the best team ever
by experienced staff. Mrs Double was exceptional
as was Mrs Turner whose experience, leadership
and enthusiasm was invaluable.
Arthur Belbin ran Kayaking for the first time and it
was a huge hit with the young people taking part in
this activity. All that took part, not only had fun but
also came away with their 1 Star Award with British
Canoeing.
Orienteering was a new and popular addition to the
week. New skills were learnt as well as lots of
energy burnt whilst running to the different
locations!
The Musical Theatre group put on an inspiring
performance, which was learnt in less than 1 week!
The Gazette and Herald were on hand to witness
this showing on the final day.
Bag4Sport, who were one of our sponsors for the
week, kindly came in to present their cheque with
Rhianna Andrew, one of their sporting heroes. The
children were truly amazed by some of the routines
she could perform! Other kind sponsors were
Wadworth & Co, Gaigers, Paxcroft Farm, who
were all vital in helping make the week a success.
The week had very positive feedback from the
parents and children. One mother told us "her
children go to lots of activities but this is the one
they enjoy the most"!
We are incredibly lucky to have the use of such
fantastic facilities at Devizes School and are very
thankful that Miss Marshall and Mrs Eaves for
allowing us to continue to use the school, as well
as for their continued support.
The week was celebrated not only in the local
paper but by local MP, Claire Perry, who wrote to
the school to thank and congratulate them on what
was a fantastic week.
Mr M Rose - Camp Xtra Co-ordinator and
School Games Organiser

King House News – Summer 2015
Students in King House welcomed Year 6’s from our feeder Primary Schools and
discussed Wiltshire’s Big Pledge. Students decided what pledge they were going to
make and try and achieve over the summer holidays. This has been followed up
and shared within the tutor groups in September.
Term 6 also saw students reflecting on their achievements throughout the year and
sharing what they were most proud of. Below are some examples.
Douglas Seedhouse (third from the left) has
been successful at helping run the Devizes Leos
Club and has helped raise over £700 pounds for charity and helped
with a successful hand over of presidents allowing new events to take
place and hopefully more success in the future raising money for
charity.
Matthew Waters has been successful in gaining lead roles in school productions
like Oliver and James and the Giant Peach. He is particularly proud of performing
at Disneyland Paris with the school.
Holly Stiles has been successful in the sport of Badminton by representing the
county in the sport. She is very proud of this achievement. She is also very
pleased with the fact that she has continually worked above her target grade in
Photography.
Connor Looker met Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall at Young Carers. She was
there because she is the Ambassador of Wiltshire young carers. “She was nice but
it was quite weird and scary to meet her”. They spoke about what
they do as young carers.
He would like to meet her again as she is very nice!
Mrs V Mackay - Head of King House
Change to School Uniform Policy
The non-compulsory school jumper can now be
worn at any time of the year. It must always be
worn with the school blazer, which remains the
compulsory item.
Mrs B Smart - Deputy Head

Teresa House News - Summer 2015
Tutor Group T-VMA:
In our tutor group we complete tasks to the best of
our ability.
In Term 1: We successfully achieved our Tutor
pledge: this included COMMITTING to being
among the top three tutor groups for House Points,
wearing correct uniform, and working as a team.
We have been top of the House on several
occasions. We take OWNERSHIP of our Home
Learning and are punctual.
We are RESPONSIBLE students and follow the
School Behaviour Policy. We are EXCELLENT!
Term 5: Russian Project
In our tutor group we were given the topic of
Russia, we had to learn about the different aspects
and their culture, this included:
Food and drink, imports and exports, design,
clothing, famous monuments, buildings, Mother
Teresa – we decided to investigate her
connections with Russia!
We enjoyed this topic because we learned about a
different place and how they live their life, and what
they do, all of the different things we have learned,
we linked them to how we live our life and figured
out the differences.
Tutor Group T-FXJ
Again, a busy time for the Tutor Group:
In tutor Jacob, Ross and Demi enjoyed helping
each other with their homework and the revision
done in tutor was really useful.
Demi Smith, Ross Ingram and Jacob Gumm
“I have enjoyed the non-uniform days for charities
such as MND, also because I can wear what I want
to school. I liked raising money for the charities as
it gives children better lives when we donate any
amount of money to them and people that are ill
can afford the medicine to make them better”.
Amy Gant
Gabriel and Rowan enjoy the Friday news round
quiz. There are some really interesting news
stories which we have not heard during the week.
Gabriel Gospodinov and Rowan Wood
“We enjoyed helping create our harvest festival
box. We drew flowers
and a tractor to go on
it”.
Sasha Hargreaves and
Bethany Lewis
Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA)
Teresa House’s chosen charity is Motor Neurone Disease, this was determined by a voting poll to
choose a specific charity that we’d raise money for.
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in
the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness.
MND can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. Although there is currently no cure for
MND, symptoms can be managed to help you achieve the best possible quality of life.
Fact: Steven Hawking suffered from a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease which slowly paralyzed him over
many decades.
Our fundraiser event :
We began our fundraiser event on the 8th May during lunch time and our House held many creative
events to encourage people to donate to our chosen charity. Some of the events/ stalls consisted of;
Guess the amount of sweets in a jar, treasure hunt map and knock
the coconut shy. All these events charged 20p - £1 to enter and the
money received would all be donated to MNDA to help those who
are less fortunate than us and who deserve it! We managed to raise
as a house £125! Success!

Kayleigh Dances with ‘Diversity’
Year 9 student Kayleigh Hayward-Hearne had the
opportunity of a lifetime in the summer holidays
when she met her favourite group.
Whilst on holiday, Kayleigh performed a street
dance set, something she pursues outside of school
with her younger sister. She won a gold card for
her brilliant performance and won the right to go
backstage with Diversity and to perform on stage
with them! She has already been asked to return to
Butlins next year to dance with them again.
Kayleigh's parents and friends are so proud of her.
Well done Kayleigh!
Snakes alive! - All change for the Careers Department!
Last year ended with our second successful Careers Fair. Over 30
employers filled the hall so our Year 10’s and 12’s could browse their stands
and learn about prospective new careers. The event even attracted some
visitors of a different kind from Wiltshire College in the form of ……the
snake, highlighting how exotic learning in Wiltshire can be!
The Careers Fair was well received by both Employers and Students and
we are already planning for Summer 2016. A huge thank you to everyone
who gave up their time to enable this valuable opportunity for students to
learn about the World of Work.
We also said goodbye to Mrs Chavez who has been offered a career
development opportunity of her own and we wish her every success with
her studies. As with all goodbyes there are often welcomes and we now
have a new Careers Co-ordinator, Mrs Pike, to take up the post with
Mrs Hampton. Mrs Hampton is celebrating her 10th year at Devizes School.
Mrs Pike who joined this September, qualified with a postgraduate in Career Guidance and Education.
She is looking forward to assisting in our Career Programme which is going from strength to strength.
We will be available at all Parents’ Evenings – we look forward to seeing you!
Mrs H Hampton & Mrs A Pike - Careers Co-ordinators
Mrs A Pike
Basketball Success
Congratulations to
the recent South West Basketball tournament and selection
held at Paignton, Devon.
A Real Team Effort
What an incredible year for Devizes School in the
Sainsbury’s School Games! We have been part of the
competition since its inception in 2012, following the
legacy of the London Olympics. We have had some
achievement in the past but this year has proven to be
extremely successful. The Sainsbury's School Games
is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions
of young people across the country to take part in more
competitive school sport.
The Sainsbury's School Games are made up of four
levels of activity: competition in schools, between
schools, and at a county/area level:
The Wiltshire School Games consisted of 12 sports this
year, ranging from athletics, badminton, basketball,
gymnastics, netball, rounder’s, rugby, table tennis,
tennis and trampolining. The Games have a
strong inclusive element resulting in more meaningful
opportunities being available for young disabled people,
such as new age kurling and boccia being offered. We
entered all 12 competitions, often with B and C teams.
There is also a strong element in providing Young
Sports Leaders to run and officiate the events, as well
as report on them. We deliver the Sports Leaders Level
1 and Level 2 course, used these fantastic leaders in
Year 10, 11 and 12 to help run these competitions, not
only for the secondary school, but also for the primary
school games competitions.
Devizes School ran three inter-house competitions
(level 1) throughout the year, and then competed in all
12 Level 2 competitions, where we competed against
other schools in the area. Through the hard work of our
students and staff we were successful in girls touch
rugby, boys tennis, ‘super 8’ athletics for boys, new age
kurling, trampolining, gymnastics and badminton, and
qualified for the Level 3 county finals.
Level 3 Winter Sports
The New Age Kurling county finals were held at
Lavington School in December and this was a fantastic
experience for our teams to come together and compete
and socialise with schools across Wiltshire. Devizes
performed very well missing out narrowly from a top
three finish, one of the highlights for the Devizes staff
was to witness the real determination on show from the
players.
Both of our KS3 and KS4 boy’s Badminton teams were
crowned county champions in February, with our KS4
girls team finishing 4 th in the county overall, these were
huge achievements and it was noted how the values of
the games and great sportsmanship was consistently
shown by our players.
Level 3 Summer Sports
These took place on July 8th at Marlborough College.
Like a mini Olympics, with an opening and closing
ceremony these county finals was an amazing
experience for our students who needed to raise their
game, with the best schools in the county being
represented. We were runners up in the girls touch
rugby competition therefore ranked as the second best
team in Wiltshire. Devizes were narrowly defeated in the
semi-finals in the boy’s tennis competition only to be
defeated by the overall winners, Malmesbury. Despite
finishing just outside of the top three in the gym and
trampolining competition Devizes displayed some excellent
individual performances and demonstrated fantastic
team spirit. Our Boys Super 8’s team rallied together
and had to deal with a late withdrawal and team change
however this did not dampen their spirits and they came
together as a team to put in some great track and field
performances.
I am really delighted that not only did our students
perform well, but our Sports Leaders were also
commended for all their hard work this year. As such
we have achieved the Gold School Games awarded by
the Youth Sport Trust.
Miss A Beck - Assistant Head

Kizzy Wylie to Star in Wyvern Theatre, Swindon
Devizes School Year 10 student Kizzy Wylie was chosen to
star in the Regional Youth Ballet performance of Les Sylphides
at the Swindon Wyvern Theatre, showing on 18th and 19th
September.
Back in July, Kizzy attended auditions and was picked as only
one of 10 dancers to perform from the county. Throughout the
summer holidays she worked very hard, attending regular
rehearsals in preparation for the performances.
Kizzy has attended ballet classes and has loved to dance for
10 years, since she was four years old. She attends the
Charlotte School of Dance in Devizes outside of school. In
school Kizzy has taken part in many performing arts events
including the school production of ‘Oliver’ in January 2015 and
the CAPA Faculty trip to Disneyland Paris where she
performed with others on stage in the Disney Park.
Kizzy was excited about her performance, which included four
dances within the performance and had several costume
changes!
Well done and congratulations Kizzy!
Devizes School Student Selected to Swim for County
Alex Sharman, a Year 8 student at Devizes School has been
selected to represent Wiltshire at the 2015 National Inter-county
Swimming Championships to be held in Sheffield on 18th
October.
Alex started swimming lessons aged three, and joined his first
swimming club, age six. A year later he won every event in his
age group at the club championships. At age eight, he transferred
to Trowbridge swimming club, to have the experience of
swimming under head coach, and former Australian Olympic
800M swimmer, Sarah Paton. Alex quickly established himself
in the club, becoming a member of the club’s B team for the
Wiltshire Winter League just after his ninth birthday, and
progressing to become a regular in the club’s A team the same
year. Since then, Alex has enjoyed training and competing at a
wider variety of competitions, winning Gold medals at the
Wiltshire Championships age nine, then reaching the National
Finals of the schools Biathlon age 10.
His tenth year however, was less successful due to injury. Alex suffered a badly broken arm whilst
wakeboarding on holiday, and which failed to heal properly, ultimately requiring an operation, and several
months recuperation. Undaunted, Alex got back into the water at the first opportunity.
Alex’s parents, Adrian and Kate, are delighted by his selection. They said “Alex had a really tough time
when he was 10 years old with injury. Yet throughout that, he remained positive and determined to get
back in the water and start winning medals again. His drive and determination have really shown in the
past year, and we are really proud of what he has achieved so far.”
Good luck and well done Alex!

Squash Tournaments
Last year’s squash tournaments were
completed, with all students taking part playing
enthusiastically, competitively and with great
sportsmanship.
Each Key Stage tournament was played in
‘round-robin’ groups with the highest scorers
going through to the quarter final knockout
stages. The semi-finalists in the KS3
tournament were Connor Askey, Liam Moffat,
Ben Brown and Charlie Strickland, with Charlie
winning the final by beating Connor 11-4, 11-6,
while Liam took 3rd place and Ben 4th.
The KS4 tournament saw some very tightly
fought games in the semi-finals with Charlie
Strickland beating Sam Warren and Chris
Thomas winning against Aaron Holloway. In the
final, Chris won the first game convincingly 11-
3, but Charlie fought back well to win the match
by taking the remaining two games 11-7, 11-7
to claim his second trophy, having already won
the KS3.
The KS5 tournament was completed earlier in
the year, again with ‘round-robin’ groups to start
with. Joe Morrison, Jake Brown, Harry Easton
and Gus O’Connor went through to the semifinals.
A very close final was won by Joe
beating Harry 11-7, 5-11, 11-8 to retain the
trophy for a second year. Gus took 3rd place
and Jake 4th.
I would like to congratulate not only the winners
but also all the students who took part and
Ultimate Dodgeball Tournament
Back in July, 45 Year 7 & 8 students from Devizes
School battled it out in an ‘Ultimate Dodgeball’
Tournament for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).
The initiative organised by the BHF, aims to
promote the importance of maintaining a healthy
heart through regular exercise whilst raising vital
funds for its fight for every heartbeat. The
sponsored knock out tournament saw duck, dive
and dodge in the fast paced game, showcasing the
skills they have been working on over the past few
weeks.
Head of PE & Health Faculty, Mr Lund said “We
loved hosting the Ultimate Dodgeball Tournament.
Over the past few weeks the students have been
working really hard securing sponsorship to take
part in the event and between them have raised
over £840. Ultimate Dodgeball has proved to be a
fantastic and fun way to get children active as well
as help BHF to raise vital funds to support its life
saving research into coronary heart disease, the
UK’s single biggest killer”.
Tens of thousands children take part in the Ultimate
Dodgeball tournament initiative each year. It raises
money to not only support the vital work of the BHF.
Mr O Clements - PE Assistant
International Rugby trip to
Kingsholm Stadium, Gloucester
On Saturday 5th September Mr Lund, Mr Herring,
Mr Clements & ex-student Amie Hayden-Smith took
30 students to the Kingsholm Rugby Stadium in
Gloucester to watch an international match between
Japan & Georgia.
It was a brilliant day with the students enjoying lots
of new experiences. On arrival we were shown into
the chairman’s hospitality suite where we given the
opportunity to watch the England V Ireland Rugby
World Cup warm up match. After that we were
taken down onto the pitch to complete a parade
around the pitch where we were clapped by all the
supporters. It was then time for the match to start so
we formed a guard of honour as the players ran
onto the pitch which was very exciting. We then
settled down into our excellent seats and enjoyed
the game which Japan won by just a few points in
the last minute with a
great try!
As the players left the
pitch we stayed behind
for photos and to say
hello to the players. We
then made our way
back to Devizes.
All in all it was a great
experience which we
will remember for many
years and we wish
Japan and Georgia all
the best in the upcoming Rugby World Cup (but not
against England)!
