Adair knocks out well fire Sunday
WATERS - The continuous jet-like
roar and rumbling of the earth which
had become familiar to area residents
abruptly ceased Sunday when Texas
fire tignter ited Adair used hydraulic
controls on a newly installed wellhead
to turn off the gas feeding a month-old
Lansing,
Operations began immediately to
"kill the well" by pumping a mixture of
clay and expanding filler compounds
called mud down tne b,as> foot anipng
The procedure pushes escaping gas
back into subterranean porkpt.c and
stops the flow begun by drilling in late
May.
The climactic moment drew cheers
trom surrounding workers who, iike
residents and passing gawhets, had
ALPENA — Private citizens and/or
facility in northeast Michigan may
express their concern at two July 6
hearings.
The first hearing will be held at 8:30
a.m. at Cooley Law School in Lansing,
while another will be held the same day
at 2:30 p.m. at Alpena High School in
Alpena.
Tom Washington, executive director
of the Michigan United Conservation
Clubs, will testify at the Lansing
hearing along with representatives of
the electrical power industry, Michigan
State government and Environmental
Protection Agency.
Scheduled to testify at the Alpena
hearing are Dr. Frank Baranowski,
director of nuclear fuel recycling for
the Energy Research and Development
Administration (ERDA). state
representative E. Dan Stevens (R-
Representatives of Alpena's local
at the hearing.
Those people wishing to testify at
either hearing may make arrangements
passenger.
Hurt was Thomas G. Coral, 12, a
passenger in a car driven by Robert
Coral, K, of Livonia. The vehicle was
struck by a car driven by Kenneth Lee
Jenkins, 19, of Midland, who was
charged with speed too great for conditions.
were not injured.
Flames leaping more than 300 feet
into the air suddenly were gone and the
silence which settled over the area was
reported eerie in contrast to the 30-day
holocaust.
Oil industry officials steadily have
declined to place a definite dollar figure
on the total operation of snuffing the
blowout. However, estimates have
soared as high as $750,000 for the services
of Adair's world famous Wild
Well Control Company, other contracted
equipment and workers and
daily loss of natural gas from the well.
The fire began the evening of
Thursday, May 27, when gas leaking
24 PAGES
from the well apparently was ignited by
a backfiring engine on North American
Drilling Company's Rig 21.
A combination of natural gas and
liquid condensate gushed from the 8Hinch
well casing, igniting as it reached
the fire several feet above the ruined
rig.
Adair was called to the scene May 28
and began the painstaking process of
preparing for Sunday's shutout. The
well site was cleared of debris and
excavated to allow access below the
fire to the well controls.
Last week a 5,000 foot cable was
strung between winches and used to
saw the old well head from the exposed
'
casing. The 94-hour operation
culminated with the placement of
custom-built well controls on the
casing.
i TOlcvtcia uiy 'iicai.-icricvi.mK siueius
and a curtain of sprayed water, Adair
and his crew moved in to install and
weld the new casing hanger, spool and
blowout preventer.
Adair then used hydraulic lines to
activate the pneumatic valve on the
blowout preventer, bringing thick stops
into the gas and cutting off the flow.
Officials of the Michigan Oil Company,
owners of the well, said they
would not know until the well is killed
whether or not the same well will be
used or a new one drilled.
coin. But American ships
were often victimized on
the high seas and piracy
became a crime punishable
bj death. One of the most
notorious of the bucca
neers was a woman. In
1717 when there was a
spirit of leniency toward
pirates, she was caught
and jailed instead of being
executed. She finally died
in jail. Who was she? Mary
Mainstream Musing
DOES GOD EXIST? For me. He does. Weaving its way
through my life is the inescapable conviction that
somewhere there is a Being greater than ourselves.
But conviction wavers; sometimes it is necessary for
the me who is the Sure One to confront the other me, that
is, the Doubter...
If there is no God, who whispers in little boys' ears to let
them know exactly the right moment to say things like,
"Dad, when I grow up, I want to be just like you!"
If there isn't any God, who causes the songs in the
throats of birds and the laughter in a baby's eyes?
If there is no God, why, when my little daughter once
stood sobbing, convinced that nobody in the world loved
her, did that yellow butterfly light in her open palm?
WHERE DOES it come from, then, that feeling that
sometimes steals over us, that it all matters, that we are
part of something great and at one with sand, water,
trees, and all of creation?
II, a* you Bay. God is a dream, why doe* the river sing
His praises? And why «s© the ulac and pine worship by
sending incense offerings heavenward?
I know a rainbow can be explained in terms of air
moisture and prism effect, so it isn't any proof. But tell
me, please, il the whole universe can be «n coldly and
scientifically explained, what is the use of a rainbow?
If there is no God, why do the towering trees bother
forming themselves into cathedrals, with sunlight
streaming onto bright wildflowers as onto a stained-glass
window?
WHAT DO YOU say to all of these things, Doubter?
What? My logic is poor'' Well, tell me, where is the logic
in a God who made both the elephant and the flea, the
poison ivy and the orchid? My logic matches His, and
somehow, it's enough.
But it's your turn. Doubter. So go ahead. Tell me again
how these wild strawberries and the Oriental poppies with
their pink crepe-paper petals are merely the result of a
collision of atoms in space a billion years ago....
Nephew, Evans united
in Mackinac ceremony
MACKINAC ISLAND —
Nancy Gayle Nephew of
Gaylord and Jeffrey Stuart
Evans of St. Louis, Mo.,
were united in marriage
June a on Mackinac Island.
The double-ring ceremony
was performed by Rev.
Dwayne Summers at the
little Stone Church on the
Island.
The bride is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Nephew of Gaylord and the
groom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert I Evans of St.
Louis, Mo.
The bride wore a blush
pink gown of chiffon silk as
she was escorted to the
altar by her father. It
featured a handkerchief
hem and satin-like sash in
the 1920's fashion. The
bride and Mrs. L.K. Titus
of Gaylord designed the
gown and it was hand
made by •Margo" of
Franklin Hills. She carried
a single red rose down the
aisle.
Serving as maid of honor
for the wedding was Jean
Colnon of Chicago, 111. She
wore a dark blue chiffon
dress accented by a bertha.
It also featured a long
flowing skirt and sashed
waist. A short chiffon veil
matching the gown was
worn and she carried a
single white rose.
Other attendants in
cluded Dawn Nephew,
Cheryl Nephew, Amy
Boland and Kathleen
Boland. The attendants
wore gowns identical to the
maid of honor in shades of
gold, red, green and blue to
match the color of the
church's stained-glass
windows. Headpieces
matched their gowns and
each carried a single white
rose. All the attendants'
dresses were hand-made.
Robert J. Evans, Jr. of
St. Louis, Mo. served as
best man for the ceremony.
Also attending the groom
were Donald Jeneske,
Kenneth Salyers and
James Boland, all of
Chicago, 111., and Robert
Benser of Mackinac Island.
Douglas Nephew and Kevin
Moore seated guests.
The bride's mother chose
a light aqua gown accented
by beads on the front. The
groom's mother wore a
dark aqua gown of chiffon
accented on the sleeves by
feathers. Both carried
single white roses.
A reception after the
ceremony was held at the
Island House. The
newlyweds will live on
Mackinac Island after their
return from a trip to the
New England states.
The bride is a 1972
graduate of the University
of Michigan. Both the bride
and groom are employed in
the Jantxen Shop on
Mackinac Island.
By Willard E. Bosserman County Extension Director,
WOLF SPIDEK
WONT HURT
People are beginning to
bring in all kinds of insects
for identification. The
parade never ceases,
really; I get some insects
during the winter as well as
in the wanner seasons of
the year.
1 received my first wolf
spider of the summer the
other day. It was a full
grown one, too. They do
make a scary sight until
you know what they are.
They are quite harmless to
human beings.
They belong to the
lycosidae family of spiders.
The lycosidae are hunting
spiders, which chase their
prey. Hence, the name
Lycosa, which is from the
Greek word for wolf. They
-1« ..,.• KinM o
catching insects.
They are among the most
common spiders. And
because of their large size
and interesting habits, they
attract a lot of attention.
They run on the ground or
Roscommon and Crawford Counties
over iogs and siones.
Some occasionally
venture up plants. At rest,
they stay under stones.
Some dig short tunnels,
others dig deep burrows.
Many hunt during the day,
others at night. They have
good vision and a highly
developed sense of touch.
Males wave their large,
often hairy, pedipalps in a
rhythmic pattern as they
approach potential mates.
The female attaches her
large egg sac to her
spinnerets. If the egg sac is
removed, the spider
searches, and upon finding
the sac, attaches it to her
spinnerets again. As the
young spiders
(spiderlings) emerge, they
climb onto their mother,
who carries them on her
»oK f/\i» Ko/»lr VwiioHinr* thorn onQv
from her eyes.
Though rather large and
fearful looking, wolf
spiders are considered
harmless; in fact, they
make nice pets. In captivity
they must be
Now Open
provided with live insects
and water.
I have some requests for
controlling potato bugs.
Our insect control bulletin
suggests Diazinon, or Srvin
or Thiodan. That gives you
a choice.
If you have au insect you
would like identified, bring
it into my office. If I can't
identify it for you, I have
