Schaller worked hard fer—felN
How bus discipline will be enforced
LAST SPRING a school bus was involved in a train
accident. Fortunately, no one was seriously Injured.
The incident, however, created a backlash of
parental concern about the safety of children riding
v the school bus.
The factor of safety had little to do with the
physical equipment or the skill of the driver. The
main concern was the behavior of children on the
bus.
The Gaylord Board of Education met with administrators.
parents and representatives froqi the
bus drivers association. The group agreed that
. something should be done to improve the safety and
behavior of students on the bus. -
— - As a result of these meetings, the following rules
have been adopted. If your child rides a Gaylord
school bus, you may wish to go over these rules
before school starts.
BUS TRANSPORTATION POLICY .
DURING THE PAST YEAR, officials of the
Vanderbilt Area Schools have become increasingly
concerned with student fundraising practices and
the economic impact that fundraising has on the
Vandefbilt community.
Like many small schooLdistricts, we are finding
that fundraising focuses cm a small group of highly
supportive people, and we are recognizing that fundraising
is a collection of activities that need to be
harnessed so these supporters are not alienated by
what has been a continual stream ol fundraising requests:
At a recent meeting of tne board of education the
of student fundraising was taken, when the
board authorized the formation of a committee
whose members would research the fundraising
'Camping' in outer space
I GAYLORD - Marit Abrams, 14, of-
Gaylord is the first student from northern
Michigan to attend a week-long
space camp at a NASA base in Huntsville,
Ala.
Abrams spent July 29-Aug. 3 at the
NASA center, and said she learned all
about the space shuttle program, and
the mechanics behind the reuseable
space vehicle. •
"We were shown how the shuttle is
built and operated," Abrams said.
"We were also informed of NASA's
plans for the future."
By 1990, NASA plans on sending up a -
permanently manned space station to
conduct experiments, she said.
Abrams got interested in the program
when she saw an application in
application in, along with a recommendation
from her science teacher,
Ca rmen Crane
camp, she explained. Level I is for
seventh and eighth graders, and Level
II is for ninth and 10th graders.
Abrams attended the level II sessions,
which are very detailed and complex,
she said.
Students from all over the country
attend the camp. Abrams' application
was reviewed at tbe Marshall Flight
Center in Huntsville, and soon she
received notification that she was accepted.
. ,
"I learned a lot about the shuttle pro-'
gram," she said. "We were put
through a simulated launch, experienced
one-sixth gravity, and met
various NASA scientists.
The students also went through
neutral buoyancy in a swimming pool, -
which is similar to weighUessness in
space, she said. She was put in the
cockpit of the shuttle, and
GAYLORD - What would you do tf
soldier in Vietnam after not knowing
his whereabouts since the late 80's?
Well, that has happened to Jane
During the war in those years, Jane
was in high school at Troutwood -
Madison, near "Dayton, Ohio. For
something to do, one could lift the
Many of them didn't receive any
about preparing the first letter and ad-"
dress it to: Dear Lonely Soldier.
It wasn't too long after sending that
