The news that stretches of roadworks on motorways and A-roads in England could be limited to two miles or less was therefore surprising (see industry round-up for more). My view is that in the majority of cases roadworks can be limited, especially if just a quick repair is needed. But what about the major projects that are being carried out across the country? I recently travelled on the M3 to the New Forest. The M3 between junction 2 (interchange with the M25) and junction 4a (Fleet) is being upgraded to a four-lane motorway by converting the hard shoulder to a permanent running lane. In total, a 13-mile stretch of the M3 through Hampshire and Surrey is being upgraded to a smart motorway. Whilst travelling this 13-mile stretch I noticed traffic management which included 50mph speed restrictions, contraflows and narrow-lane running. However, these lower speed limits are designed to help traffic flow, with lane closures limited to night-time. My point is that there’s no way these works could or should be broken up into several smaller sets of works as surely this would just create even more traffic management? With more and more projects getting underway every day – many large in scale – a common sense approach is needed.
