Refurbishment
of Hammersmith
Flyover completed
Work on the £100m refurbishment
of Hammersmith Flyover has
been completed.
The refurbishment, which has seen
engineers working day and night over
the past two years, means that the sixties
flyover has now been fully restored and
strengthened. The flyover is now safe to
use for decades to come and will require
less regular maintenance work, meaning
less congestion and traffic delays in
the future.
Since October 2013, vital restoration
work has been carried out by Transport
for London (TfL), its principal contractor
Costain and main sub-contractors
including Freyssinet and SSL, to
strengthen 11 of the flyover’s 16 spans
after an initial five were strengthened
in 2012.
TfL is now working to clear the work site
around the flyover, with all local roads
returning to normal by late autumn.
Garrett Emmerson, chief operating
officer for surface transport at TfL, said:
“We are committed to ensuring that
London’s road network is safe, reliable
and well cared for. The work carried out
on the Hammersmith Flyover in the last
two years has been vital to ensure that
the structure, a key London road artery,
remains safe for many years to come.
“The engineering prowess of the team at
Hammersmith has meant that the flyover
has been kept open to traffic for more
than 90% of the duration of the work, and
I would like to thank all local residents
and road users for having borne with us
whilst the work was carried out.”

£4m boost for NI roads
maintenance

Minister Danny
Kennedy has
announced
a £4 million
funding
extension
for road
resurfacing in
Northern Ireland.
The Minister announced a £4m
extension of funding for structural
maintenance until the end of October,
which will be used for resurfacing those
parts of the road network where the
need is greatest.
He said: “The steps I am taking will
allow my Department’s essential road
resurfacing programme to continue
into the Autumn months, as well as
providing some immediate respite for
the industry. It is a responsible decision
in the context of the financial problems
facing the Department.
“In light of the need to maintain our
road network at a reasonable level
and to retain skills and capacity in
the local construction industry which
is currently facing real difficulties, I
have decided to extend funding for
structural maintenance until the end
of October in the expectation of a
monitoring round.”
As a result of the reduced capital
funding for the Department, funding
was only available to enable major
capital resurfacing works until the end
of August. In previous years substantial
capital funding has been made
available in monitoring rounds.

Roads Minister to speak at Excellence Awards
Roads Minister Andrew
Jones will be speaking at this
year’s Highways Magazine
Excellence Awards.
The 2015 awards will be held
at the Lancaster London on
Wednesday 14 October.
The MP for Harrogate and
Knaresborough was appointed Roads
Minister in May 2015.
Mr Jones will talk about the government’s
Road Investment Strategy.
He said: “I am delighted to be attending
this year’s Highways Magazine Excellence
Awards. With the government making a
big investment
into the highways
sector over the
next few years,
the event will
provide a great
opportunity for
me to outline
some of our plans
and to celebrate the achievements of
