This artificially intelligent machine can self-teach, taught itself to play chess in just three days, and has attained a level better than most humans. Its designer Matthew Lai, Imperial College, has stated that it is of International Master strength. The difference between Giraffe and Deep Blue, the latter an IBM supercomputer, is that the former is thought to be the first working chess AI featuring an artificial neural network, that being a system that mimics the human cognitive processes in its thinking. The breed of computers to which Deep Blue (DB) belongs use colossal number crunching systems, with DB employing 480 processors and calculating 200 million moves per second. Giraffe, like the human brain, is more efficient at rejecting bad moves as it moves towards a conclusion. This level of sophistication and ‘learning as it goes’ has, of course, far reaching possibilities, not least in other board games, but also in the replication of the human self. It is with some sense of satisfaction that it is the game of chess that both stimulates and excites the scientific body in its progress to understand the workings of the human brain. Chess at its highest level has been seen recently in a number of high profile world tournaments, including the second leg of the Grand Chess Tour, the Sinquefield Cup, which Lev Aronian won. There was also the Russian Men’s Championship held in Chita, Russia, and won by Evgeny Tomashevsky, whilst the Russian 65th Women’s Superfinal was held in tandem from 9th to the 20th August. This Far Eastern destination is not too distant from Mongolia and China, and featured nearly all the top names currently playing in women’s chess in Russia, including Valentina Gunina, Moscow, a winner on three previous occasions, Natalija Pogonina, Sarator Region, who won in 2012, and Aleksandra Goryachkina, the winner of this year’s Superfinal. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Championships were re-established as a National Championship, and players from Moscow and St. Petersburg were allowed to participate, since, prior to the 1992 rebirth, both these cities held their own Individual Championships and their players were ineligible to play in the national event. There have been twentyfour consecutive championships since then with men and women playing in separate tournaments. In the women’s 2015 Superfinal, the average ELO rating of the twelve players was 2460 points, with Gunina at 2531, Kosteniuk on 2526, and Lagno 2530. If we take the top twelve women players’ ELO ratings for England, they average out at 2180 points, a massive difference that shows not just the interest in Russia toward chess, but also towards women’s chess as well as that of men’s chess. Pity we in this country can’t show similar enthusiasm! (See previous column, issue 44). The following game from the 2015 Russian Women’s Superfinal Tournament was between the eventual winner, Aleksandra Goryachkina, white, and Marina Guseva, black. (See diagram.) White has just played her black squared Bishop to e5 from c3, seemingly giving up her pawn for nothing on c5, and Black’s King quickly took it. What was White’s plan? And what had Black overlooked? West duly played ♥K and carefully led ♥8 to the third trick, a “suitpreference signal” for partner, after trumping, to return the higher ranking of the other suits, here ♦s (if West had wanted a ♣return, he’d lead his lowest ♥to the third trick). Such signals are most useful in trumping situations, but only if partner is aware of them. Evidently this East was not, for after much agonising and mental cointossing, East returned ♣3. Declarer gratefully won ♣A, led ♠A, and cashed dummy’s ♣KQ discarding ♦10. Contract made. West criticised East for failing to obey the suit-preference signal, but West had an idiot-proof defence - he should simply have cashed ♦A before leading the third ♥ for East to trump. ANDREW’S TIP: A victorious defence is better than a victorious post-mortem! ♠ ♠
