10. Instant easel
Reason for activity
To learn and enjoy the basics of mark
making and the early development of
writing and drawing at home.
Time needed
30+ mins
What you need
• Large roll of paper (wallpapers are ideal)
• Pair of over-the-door hooks
• Curtain rod
• Tape
• Old vinyl table cloth
• Old newspapers.
What to do
Chose a suitable door on which to hang a
pair of over-the-door hooks, then thread
a large roll of paper onto a curtain rod and
set it in the hooks. Whenever you want to
use the easel, pull the paper down to the
bottom of the door and tape it in place at
the top and bottom - this way, your child
can’t pull the roll into a giant heap on the
floor. Keep the tape and scissors nearby
so you can easily refresh the canvas as
needed. If your door has an uneven surface,
tape some cardboard behind the role of
paper to give your child a flat writing and
drawing surface.
Tips
• Make it easy for your child to access things like pencils,
crayons and brushes to promote their independence and
encourage spontaneous use of the instant easel.
• Draw an outline of your child on the instant easel by
tracing a pencil around their body when they stand
against the door and get them to fi nish it by drawing hair,
eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc. This is great fun for
children and a chance to spend quality time with them
doing something creative.
