7. Games of the past

To pass on some of the games you, or
your child’s grandparents, played as
a child, in the playground, at home, at
parties.

What you will need
This depends upon the games you
decide to teach your child.
What to do
You might start by writing a list of the games you played as a child, and also ask your parents. Research
on the Internet will also throw up some ideas, as well as information about how to play the games, if
you’ve forgotten!
Talk about the games and then decide which ones to try out. Ask your child what her favourite playground
games are and ask her to teach them to you.
Some of the games might be: skipping games, ‘It’, ‘Tag’, chasing games, hopscotch, hoola-hoop, ball
games, ‘Grandmother’s Footsteps’, ‘Hide and Seek’, clapping games, Jacks, marbles. The list is endless!
8. Growing seeds
Reason for activity
To look at the way plants grow from seeds.
Time needed
30 mins and ongoing
What you will need
• 3 plastic plates
• Kitchen roll
• Biscuit cutters
• Cress seeds.
What to do
• Using the three plates, place 9 or 10 sheets of kitchen paper on each one.
• Lay a pastry cutter on each plate and spoon water on to each plate to soak the kitchen roll.
• Sprinkle cress seeds into each cutter. Hold the cutter down gently and spread the seeds
evenly ensuring you go right to the edge of the cutter.
• Carefully remove the cutter and put the plates near a window.
• Everyday add a little water around the edge of the seeds – make sure you do not pour water
directly on to the seeds.
• After about a week the seeds will have grown into the shape of the cutters.
