23. Tidy-up box
Reason for activity
To increase children’s independence when they play,
and teach them how to tidy up after playing.
What you will need
• Selection of boxes or containers,
i.e. small and large cardboard boxes
• Photographs or drawings of toys
• Glue stick.
Time needed
15+ mins
What to do
Together with your child label each box with a suitable photograph or drawing of a group of toys, i.e.
cars, trains, Lego, dolls, crayons, animals, etc. Choose an area where the box(es) are to be kept and
each time that your child has fi nished playing with their toys, encourage them to put them into the
right box. Praise your child whenever they put the right toy into the right box. This will increase their
confi dence and encourage them to do it themselves.
In addition to labelling each box with a photograph or picture for each group of toys, you can also write
the name of the group of toys in large letters on the box.
24. Waterproof finger puppets
Reason for Activity
To turn your child’s bath time into a fun
and entertaining experience. If you ever
have trouble getting your child into the
bath, this may be a sure way to get them
to enjoy their bath time.
Time needed
15+ minutes
What you will need
• pair of rubber gloves
• permanent markers
• scissors
What to do
Wash a pair of rubber gloves, making sure
all powdery residue from the packaging has
been removed. Cut off the fi ngers of the
gloves and use permanent markers to draw
faces, hair, and other details. Allow the ink
to dry and once ready, the show can begin.
Tips
• For safety, make sure your child doesn’t put
their fi ngers in their mouths.
• Encourage your child to put on a fi nger puppet
show as this will promote their confi dence and
language and communication skills.
