What to do
Help your child to make a money box. An empty tea bag box is ideal to use. If you break open the box
carefully and open it out, the inside is usually blank and easy to write or draw on. Encourage your
child to draw pictures on it, perhaps of something they’d like to save for. Once it is decorated, cut a
slit for the money and reassemble the box.
While you’re making the money box together, talk about where your child might want to keep the
money box and discuss what the money saved will be spent on.
Encourage your child to save for specifi c things or events and to set realistic goals. For example if they
want something that will cost £5, save £1 a week over 5 weeks or 50 pence over 10 weeks.
You can also talk about other things money can be used for, how people get it and ways to look after it.
What to do
You don’t need any special preparation to do a nature walk and enjoy the benefi ts. Simply
choose an area like a park, woods or forest (your local library will hold information of such
places). Go out with the relevant things you need and explore nature around you.
Tips
• Plan the route according to your child’s age and attention span. Some
children can only walk a quarter of a mile before they get very tired and bored.
• Become nature detectives by recording things you come across like special
land marks, mini beasts, birds, trees, ponds, ducks, etc.
• Chat about the things you have seen. This will improve their vocabulary and
extend their language development.
