BOOKBINDING
INSTRUCTOR Roberta Shaw
Learn how to create and bind your own books; for use as artist
books, notebooks, cook books, or photo albums. You will gain
a solid understanding of Japanese Stab, Accordion, and Coptic
bindings, and will quickly discover the advantages and appeal
of each of these bindings so you can make informed decisions
about which type to use on specific projects. You will complete
at least three books, and have the opportunity to experiment
with different types and weights of paper. Please see your course
supply list online. Some supplies will be provided. Be sure to
come prepared for the first class.

BOOKBINDING II
INSTRUCTOR Roberta Shaw
Pick up where Bookbinding I left off and learn more advanced
binding techniques, including: Pocket Accordion, Crown Molding
bindings, and Hard Cover Fan Fold Spine binding. Learn new
folding and sewing techniques as you build upon the skills
acquired in Bookbinding I, and construct at least three books.
Experiment with different types and weights of paper and
determine best practices for different book styles. Please see

COPTIC BOOKBINDING WITH STENCILED COVER
INSTRUCTOR Kasia Koralewska
Learn how to create a one of a kind book with one of the
simplest, oldest bookbinding methods, Coptic binding. Your
instructor will lead you through the process and show you how to
create a multi-coloured stencil for the front (and back) covers to
personalize your book. Please see your course supply list online.

WHEELTHROWING
INSTRUCTOR Andrew Tarrant
Learn technical and aesthetic aspects of throwing functional
forms on the potter’s wheel. You will explore the concept of
utility in relation to form and expression, with a focus on specific
forms. Surface treatments, including decoration with slip and
glazes, and firing, are taught. Work through a set of projects
designed to give you skill-building practice in the forms and

GRAPHIC DESIGN I
Gain a solid understanding of visual communication design
and the role of a graphic designer. Learn to solve problems
and generate ideas through sketching and drawing, which will
develop your abilities. Emphasis will be on using the elements
and principles of design effectively while you work on in-class
projects that push your creativity. You will use a variety of
graphic methods to communicate ideas with images, typography,
narrative illustration, and decoration. As a group, you will
analyze and critique graphic design from product packaging to
periodicals to logos as inspiration for your own work. Please see

NOTE: This course emphasizes hand skills; work is not done on a
computer.
