Learn how to create and bind your own books; for use as artist<br />

books, notebooks, cook books, or photo albums. You will gain<br />

a solid understanding of Japanese Stab, Accordion, and Coptic<br />

bindings, and will quickly discover the advantages and appeal<br />

of each of these bindings so you can make informed decisions<br />

about which type to use on specific projects. You will complete<br />

at least three books, and have the opportunity to experiment<br />

with different types and weights of paper. Please see your course<br />

supply list online. Some supplies will be provided. Be sure to<br />

Pick up where Bookbinding I left off and learn more advanced<br />

binding techniques, including: Pocket Accordion, Crown Molding<br />

bindings, and Hard Cover Fan Fold Spine binding. Learn new<br />

folding and sewing techniques as you build upon the skills<br />

acquired in Bookbinding I, and construct at least three books.<br />

Experiment with different types and weights of paper and<br />

determine best practices for different book styles. Please see<br />

COPTIC BOOKBINDING WITH STENCILED COVER<br />

INSTRUC<strong>TO</strong>R Kasia Koralewska<br />

Learn how to create a one of a kind book with one of the<br />

simplest, oldest bookbinding methods, Coptic binding. Your<br />

instructor will lead you through the process and show you how to<br />

create a multi-coloured stencil for the front (and back) covers to<br />

personalize your book. Please see your course supply list online.<br />

Learn technical and aesthetic aspects of throwing functional<br />

forms on the potter’s wheel. You will explore the concept of<br />

utility in relation to form and expression, with a focus on specific<br />

forms. Surface treatments, including decoration with slip and<br />

glazes, and firing, are taught. Work through a set of projects<br />

designed to give you skill-building practice in the forms and<br />

GRAPHIC DESIGN I<br />

Gain a solid understanding of visual communication design<br />

and the role of a graphic designer. Learn to solve problems<br />

and generate ideas through sketching and drawing, which will<br />

develop your abilities. Emphasis will be on using the elements<br />

and principles of design effectively while you work on in-class<br />

projects that push your creativity. You will use a variety of<br />

graphic methods to communicate ideas with images, typography,<br />

narrative illustration, and decoration. As a group, you will<br />

analyze and critique graphic design from product packaging to<br />

periodicals to logos as inspiration for your own work. Please see<br />
