RLE Corporate Manual

Introduction
This corporate manual serves as a guideline for all persons,
departments and subsidiaries in the RLE INTERNATIONAL
Group who communicate the brand. The aim is to generate
a consistent and coherent identity internally and externally
for all divisions of the company. Strict branding conveys a
clear target for sustainability and values.
Consistently applied corporate design forms the basis
for successful corporate communication.
The following pages present the basic design constants that
have defined the individual identity of the RLE INTERNATIONAL
Group.
This manual is divided into modules to allow for updates
and additions at any time. Standard applications are given
as examples, rules for use are defined and assistance is
provided for applications.
The identity summarises the complex features and services
of a corporate personality to present a credible visual
identity that is easy to remember. It generates a “remembrance
value”.
1. Corporate identity
Corporate identity reflects a company’s personality and
includes coordinated use of the identity internally and
externally. The basis is formed by the corporate mission
statement. It is brought to life by the corporate identity,
aiming to achieve and foster sustainable corporate development.
Thus, corporate identity is the personality of an organisation
that operates as a consistent player and is consequently
perceived as such.
The corporate identity describes and determines the
consistent and mandatory appearance for the company
and defines the form and design of the external identity
(corporate design), corporate communication by applying
a balanced marketing mix, the appearance for customers
and partners (corporate behaviour) as well as the corporate
culture and values.
The development and observance of corporate identity
are the basis for customer and employee loyalty. The
identity of the company with its mission statement, selfexpression
and behaviour need to have a strict structure
and be sustainably cultivated. It has to be mandatory and
valid in the long term in order for the corporate logo to
sustainably develop and gain value and guarantee a high
degree of recognition.
Responsible for applying and observing a consistent external
identity is the Corporate Marketing & Communication
department. All components of the identity for the whole
corporate group are controlled and applied from here.
1. Corporate identity
1.1 Brand core
Nowadays, the term “corporate identity” (CI) is often
colloquially equated – or better confused – with “ corporate
design” (CD).
The brand core is the centre of every brand – and its
authentic origin. This comprises the brand tradition
(“heritage”) and the brand values. Both of these are fixed
brand components, which can no longer change or, if so,
very slowly. Together, they constitute the identity of the
brand.
1.1.1 Heritage
Each brand normally has its own history of origin and
development, from which part of its unique character is
derived: fixed, verifiable facts that make up what the
brand is.
1.1.2 Brand values
These describe how the brand works – what it stands for
emotionally: how it offers its services and how it competes
with other brands.
1. Corporate identity
1.2 Brand shell
The brand shell around the brand core comprises corporate
behaviour, corporate communication and corporate
design.
1.2.1 Corporate behaviour (CB)
CB refers to the company’s manner internally and externally:
the personal behaviour in contact with other people
(among colleagues, with management and customers)
and the behaviour of the company with respect to the
public and press.
1.2.3 Corporate design (CD)
The identity of the company and the brand in all two and
three-dimensional applications is described by the CD. It
incorporates the design framework for the uniqueness,
perception and recognition in the face of the numerous
competitors.
1.2.2 Corporate communication (CC)
CC entails the type of advertising and the company’s own
presentation which refers primarily to the company itself
and not to its products.
3. Hidden champions
In the last 15 years a number of development service
providers have developed which are comparable to many
mid-sized automotive suppliers as regards turnover,
workforce, location network and conception. In some
cases owner-operated, in private hands or listed: the
engineering service providers have become a force to be
reckoned with, and have a great attraction for future
up-and-coming engineering talents.
Despite this, these providers are hardly known to the
public at large and mostly just specialised experts in
R & D. This is a result of the unique business model of
engineering and development providers in which the intellectual
property of the development results normally
pass to the customer. This means that the R & D contribution
of providers is frequently not conveyed and remains
behind closed contractual doors.
4. Brand with a history
For more than 30 years now, RLE INTERNATIONAL has
traditionally stood for innovative know-how in the core
area of engineering.
During the course of the decades, the company has continued
to extend its areas of expertise and cultivate new fields of
business. Today, the company with a workforce of more than
1,500 is present around the globe.
The two letters R and L in RLE’s name are a subtle
reference to the two founders of the company Rupa and
Laufenberg.
5. RLE is a brand
5.1 The word/symbol logo
5.3 Use of the logo
The logo of the RLE INTERNATIONAL Group is a word/
symbol logo comprising three elements that may be
combined with each other:
a) The flourish “RLE INTERNATIONAL”
b) The arc
c) The thinker
The logo must always be taken from an original file for all
applications. It may not be reproduced and not changed.
Every application for the trademark must be coordinated
before printing or production with the Corporate Marketing
& Communication department of the RLE INTERNATIONAL
Group.
In this form, the trademark has been registered with the
German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) and is protected
by law. It may only be used in the forms set out in
this corporate manual.
In addition, any use of the trademark is impermissible
without prior written approval of RLE INTERNATIONAL.
5.2 Registration at the Patent and Trademark Office
The RLE logo is protected and registered as a word/
symbol logo with the German Patent and Trademark
Office under the number 3020150470635.
6. Word/symbol logo and tag line
6.1 The word logo
6.2 The symbol logo
RLE INTERNATIONAL was launched with this discerning
name in 1998 – the corporate group today bears this
name rightly. The international approach is acknowledged
sustainably and with justification in this name. The word
logo stands for the entire corporate group and functions
as an umbrella brand for the individual companies. The
name is established in the market. The emphasis of the
letters “RLE” contribute in to the recognition effect – in
the brief version, the name is just as familiar, the
connection with the symbol logo is guaranteed.
The thinker forms the centre of the symbol logo. It uniquely
symbolises the approach to business the group of companies
has. The thinker lends the product “Engineering” pictorial
expression and supports the depiction in graphic form.
The thinker is striking and has a high degree of recognition,
it is established in the market. The employees have
attested a high degree of identification of the thinker to
RLE. The arc below the symbol logo broadly seen picks up
the globe: it stands for dynamism and foresight. The
colour green is a unique aspect of the company within
the branch and a feature that sets it apart from market
competitors. The thinker has been modernised in its pose,
hand gesture and profile.
22
RLE Corporate Manual

6.3 The logo
6.4 The tag line
The word/symbol logo stands for modernity and flexibility.
The values associated with the logo from the beginning
remain evident. The whole corporate group is reflected in
the logo. The recognition effect is completely evident, as
is the distance from the competition. The logo is free of
ballast and superfluous symbols. It suits all common
applications and is flexible and practical to use.
The tag line “Engineering Excellence. Worldwide.”
symbolises the dedication of RLE INTERNATIONAL to the
global engineering market. It integrates the entire core
business throughout individual business models and the
entire value chain. It is internationally valid and may be
used internationally without any translation.
“Engineering” stands for the extensive services we render
along the value chain. “Excellence” stands for our
customer proposition of quality and expertise as well as
the mission for our own staff. “Worldwide” stands for the
global approach to be close to our customers all over the
world and being mobile with our service portfolio
throughout all regions.
The tag line means motivation, supplying the best results
and living up to our own demands.
7.3 Corporate colours
7.3.1 Primary colours
The primary colours HKS 56 K (RLE Green) and HKS 92 K
(RLE Grey) have distinguished the RLE INTERNATIONAL
Group from its competitors for many years now and remain
as compelling colours.
Green displays knowledge, information and expertise.
Grey is noble, reserved and technical.
7.3.2 Secondary colours
In addition to the corporate colours, the secondary colours
may be selected to distinguish between corporate divisions
or when drawing up complex graphics.
7.3.4 Spread colours
The graphic areas of RLE designs should always have a
flat white area containing the logo and heads at the upper
edge and a coloured area in the lower part that, in turn,
may contain text, graphics and images.
If a spread colour forms the background, the following
colour is defined depending on the print colours:
• If the primary colours are printed in full tone, the
coloured area corresponds to the 10% grid of HKS 92 K.
• If the printing is in 4c Euroscale the coloured areas are
covered by 8% black.
7.4 The image & publication matter
In 1993, musician and inventor Hans Reichel from Wuppertal
was commissioned to design a CD booklet. Because he
had “a huge amount of text to set on twelve minute
pages”, he started thinking about a legible, space-saving
type. Dax Condensed was born with the use of a fine
felt-tip pen and Tipp-Ex. The typical attributes: narrow,
only a little contrast, missing descenders . . . typical
characteristics of headline types. But when a talented
type designer like Hans Reichel (a pupil of Günter Gerhard
Langes) sets his mind on making Dax a text typeface,
then he manages it.
7.4.1 Type sizes in image and popular texts
The type size should be the same in all publications of the
RLE INTERNATIONAL Group:
Top heads: 36 pt, line spacing: 40 pt
Headlines: 24 pt, line spacing: 26 pt
Copy: 10 pt, line spacing: 16 pt
Body copy is always set flush right and left, lists are flush
left. Indentation of text sections at the beginning of a
paragraph is possible up to 5 mm for longer texts.
For the RLE INTERNATIONAL Group, four type weights in
the Dax family have been selected:
Dax Light (as a bread-and-butter type for reading
texts and headlines)
Dax Regular (in the logo “INTERNATIONAL”)
Dax Medium (for highlighting in copy and subheads)
Dax Bold (in the logo “RLE”)
7.4.2 How the type is never used
To ensure a consistent appearance for all text applications,
a number of rules are to be observed. To allow flush
left and flush right text to flow better, it is permissible to
optimise character spacing as sparingly as possible. Type
widths are never changed!
oriented to this, but also headlines and text frames. This
grid guarantees a high degree of recognition irrespective
of the size of the advertising aid.
For the RLE INTERNATIONAL Group, we always think the
grid is starting from the top right!
The grid offers assistance, but it is not an immobile dogma.
It may be freely scaled to offer options for various
formats, as shown in the example on the right.
The grid is used in this way:
a: up to A5 5 mm
b: up to A3 10 mm
c: up to A1 20 mm
d: from A0 40 mm
e: 18/1 80 mm
7.8 Imagery
In line with our mission that competent, creative and innovative
employees are the key to the success of the RLE
INTERNATIONAL Group, images should always be selected
which show interaction between humans and technology.
The special factor that RLE INTERNATIONAL generally
develops models for customers and may not show the
results will also lead in future to us having to obtain stock
material from photo agencies.
Please observe the following points when selecting images:
• Dynamic basic mood for the colours (brilliant and intensive)
• Technology not identifiable as a specific model (details,
sections)
• Modern perspective (up, down)
Image motifs purchased are collected centrally in the
Marketing department and may be called up from there.
The silver sticker with the laterally placed word/symbol
should be affixed to vehicles with dark paintwork on the
right-hand side of the vehicle at the rear. It would be
desirable to have it placed above the rear lights, but
depending on the vehicle model, it is also permissible to
place it below these.
Special forms for vehicles with light paintwork or showcars
may be requested direct from Corporate Marketing &
As with all designs for RLE INTERNATIONAL, the proportional
take priority over too much information in text form. The
the brochures – be employed to increase the legibility of
