The Brownie Band A Brownie Indian, I am known With tomahawk to hold my own. Utilizing the Scottish highland folktales of his maternal ancestory, a then unknown Canadian artist named Palmer Cox created a group of playful sprites known as the Brownies and he introduced them to the world in February of 1883 in a children’s periodical, St. Nicholas Magazine. Like the greats, Rose O’Neill and Johnny Gruelle, Palmer Cox filled his world with a wide array of fanciful characters, and like those greats, Palmer Cox now finds his works immortalized by the contemporary great R John Wright. Each Brownie is an entirely hand-made wool-felt doll from R John Wright and each is specially designed with heavy-wire feet to stand unaided. Each is a numbered limited edition of just 250 and comes in a fanciful presentation box with a certificate of authenticity. B r o w n i e Ye a r Bo o k By Palmer Cox. T h e Du D e First appearing in the 1887 "The Brownies, Their Book." by Palmer Cox, the whimsical Dude is one of the most recognizable Brownies ever, and why shouldn’t he be, for he is the one who shows the other Brownie what to wear, though honestly, they don’t seem to listen much. The Brownie Dude is made of the finest all-wool felt and wears a natty outfit consisting of cuffed trousers, waistcoat, stiffened collar with bow tie, and swallow-tailed jacket as well as a matching top hat and, of course, a hand-carved wood cane and a gold plated monocle. T h e in D i a n The Indian wears a traditional "deerskin" costume made of felt consisting of belted shirt with fringe decorated with hand painted designs, tiny felt covered buttons, fringed leggings, and moccasins.
