Garden: The Olden Community Garden
When I began the residency, clutching a pleasingly floral notebook and an
unreliable silver-inked pen, I hoped a community garden would yield
inspiration both from its horticultural merits and from the chance
encounters which might happen within it. Olden did not disappoint. I’ve
tried to capture its atmosphere in the second poem here. During my
residence I met gardeners, volunteers and visitors – and each made me
think afresh about plants and poetry. Lots of chance encounters – and
some, even less expected, with the flowers themselves and my nearforgotten
memories of them. That’s what this first poem is about.
