Tony Lucas Garden: St Dunstan’s in the East I was assigned to St Dunstan in the East, site of an ancient city church, where the outer walls and Wren’s tower survive from World War II bombing. The garden created in and around these is a secluded place for City workers to come, as well as tourists. I visited a couple of times before the weekend, and researched some of the history of the parish. Over the weekend I was on site for three hours each day, along with the volunteers. During the residency I was able to draft three or four poems, of which this is one. It was clear to me how valuable sanctuaries like this are to the life of the city. It is a place where anyone can come to sit, rest, talk, reflect – with no obligation to buy anything, no advertising being pushed at you, simply an opportunity to be with a companion, or just with yourself. No one has a vested interest in providing such spaces, which makes it all the more important to cherish the ones that we have. 74
Churchyard Birds For centuries, rooks settled in south garden trees. A parish fund paid for a yearly trash of osiers, material to help make their nests. During the church rebuilding, in King George’s day, the rooks took off, migrating to the White Tower till the workmen left, then they returned. War and development have blown them all away. Now only pigeons angle down to scavenge round a daily trash of sandwich packs. A blackbird lands beside me on the bench, until his mate starts up her shrill alarm – seeing the cocked head of a magpie, glint from the highest wall. 75
