historical flavour and crucially not too difficult to assemble. I invented a<br />

form a ‘galenical’, part poem, part puzzle. The galenical can contain no<br />

more than 12 words , and can be read in more than one direction (although<br />

often starting from the top left) by arranging the words into four corners,<br />

one for each garden wing at Eastbury Manor. I’ve also stolen bits of patois<br />

from poetry of the Elizabethan period, often rhyming the bottom two lines.<br />

I’ve no idea whether they are successful or not, but they were fun to put<br />

together.<br />

I’ve done twenty galencials so far, and include a small handful here, set in<br />

Kelmscott, a typeface originally created by William Morris, just to add<br />

even more pretentious historical incongruity.<br />
