historical flavour and crucially not too difficult to assemble. I invented a
form a ‘galenical’, part poem, part puzzle. The galenical can contain no
more than 12 words , and can be read in more than one direction (although
often starting from the top left) by arranging the words into four corners,
one for each garden wing at Eastbury Manor. I’ve also stolen bits of patois
from poetry of the Elizabethan period, often rhyming the bottom two lines.
I’ve no idea whether they are successful or not, but they were fun to put
together.
I’ve done twenty galencials so far, and include a small handful here, set in
Kelmscott, a typeface originally created by William Morris, just to add
even more pretentious historical incongruity.
