<strong>Strategies</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Make</strong> <strong>You</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>Excellent</strong> <strong>Researcher</strong> <strong>in</strong> Develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>New</strong><br />
<strong>Biopharmaceuticals</strong><br />
Recently, a new <strong>an</strong>ti-cholesterol medication is allowed <strong>to</strong> go public, add<strong>in</strong>g a new<br />
member <strong>to</strong> the long list of biological drugs. These super biological drugs not only<br />
create amaz<strong>in</strong>g profits <strong>to</strong> pharmaceutical comp<strong>an</strong>ies, but also create a lot of jobs<br />
<strong>an</strong>d opportunities <strong>to</strong> young researchers who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> drug development.<br />
However, if these young talents w<strong>an</strong>t <strong>to</strong> get <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> this <strong>in</strong>dustry, the first th<strong>in</strong>g they<br />
should do is <strong>to</strong> temper themselves so as <strong>to</strong> acquire knowledge <strong>an</strong>d skills necessary<br />
for the biopharmaceutical <strong>in</strong>dustry. <strong>Biopharmaceuticals</strong> is a very complex<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>e. It is usually produced with org<strong>an</strong>ism or extracted from org<strong>an</strong>ism, such<br />
as fungal cells like E. coli or yeast, prote<strong>in</strong>s expressed by macromolecules or <strong>in</strong><br />
liv<strong>in</strong>g cells <strong>an</strong>d other products.<br />
In order <strong>to</strong> enter the biopharmaceutical <strong>in</strong>dustry, young scientists have <strong>to</strong> acquire<br />
relev<strong>an</strong>t knowledge, such as neurobiology, cardiovascular disease <strong>an</strong>d<br />
immunology. Me<strong>an</strong>while, they also need <strong>to</strong> have a basic underst<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
<strong>an</strong>tibody eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, bio<strong>in</strong>formatics, next-generation DNA sequenc<strong>in</strong>g, genetic<br />
m<strong>an</strong>ipulation <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>y other related subjects. Monica Müller, chief scientific<br />
officer of a well known biotech comp<strong>an</strong>y, said that these young people should<br />
also need <strong>to</strong> have the ability of problems solv<strong>in</strong>g, creativity, leadership <strong>an</strong>d<br />
teamwork skills.<br />
Although there are m<strong>an</strong>y opportunities, competition is fierce <strong>in</strong> this field. “We<br />
recently released a batch of job post<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>an</strong>d received more th<strong>an</strong> 50 resumes for<br />
each position <strong>in</strong> the first week”, said professor Monica. Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> Charles, CD<br />
Genomics received 100 <strong>an</strong>d 150 resumes for the position of primary <strong>an</strong>d<br />
secondary researcher.<br />
In addition <strong>to</strong> master the most basic biological knowledge <strong>an</strong>d labora<strong>to</strong>ry skills,<br />
they also need <strong>to</strong> learn about the import<strong>an</strong>t <strong>in</strong>formation of biopharmaceutical<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry, such as monoclonal <strong>an</strong>tibodies, recomb<strong>in</strong><strong>an</strong>t prote<strong>in</strong>s <strong>an</strong>d cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />
development of drugs <strong>an</strong>d the experience of large-scale production experience.<br />
<strong>You</strong>ng people who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> enter<strong>in</strong>g well-known comp<strong>an</strong>ies need <strong>to</strong><br />
underst<strong>an</strong>d what <strong>in</strong>formation their targeted comp<strong>an</strong>ies are concerned. We are now<br />
pl<strong>an</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> cooperate with CD Genomics on updat<strong>in</strong>g our <strong>an</strong>tibody sequenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
service, so as <strong>to</strong> meet more specific requirements from clients. Therefore, we need<br />
talents with professional skills <strong>in</strong> sequenc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
While apply<strong>in</strong>g for a position <strong>in</strong> biopharmaceutical <strong>in</strong>dustry, soft power is crucial.<br />
Communicat<strong>in</strong>g skill, however, is the most import<strong>an</strong>t part <strong>in</strong> soft power. The<br />
same as other scientific discipl<strong>in</strong>es, researchers engaged <strong>in</strong> biological research<br />
<strong>an</strong>d drug development also have <strong>to</strong> write papers <strong>an</strong>d give presentations.
Me<strong>an</strong>while, they also need <strong>to</strong> communicate with their superior <strong>an</strong>d colleagues so<br />
that they c<strong>an</strong> efficiently convey their research ideas <strong>to</strong> the targeted audiences.<br />
“Most of the time, we are just like a used car salesm<strong>an</strong>. We have <strong>to</strong> persuade our<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mers who always have dissident views aga<strong>in</strong>st you”, expla<strong>in</strong>ed Professor<br />
Monica.<br />
Lastly, they should be self-motivated, enthusiastic, responsive <strong>an</strong>d k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>to</strong> others<br />
are all highly valued by pharmaceutical comp<strong>an</strong>ies. <strong>You</strong> are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> spend a lot of<br />
time with your team, <strong>an</strong>d also you will undertake a lot of challeng<strong>in</strong>g work. If you<br />
c<strong>an</strong> get along well with everyone <strong>an</strong>d all the colleagues are fond of you, you will<br />
be able <strong>to</strong> create a more harmonious work<strong>in</strong>g environment.<br />
