<strong>Part</strong> <strong>III</strong>: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Industrialization</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physiology</strong> <strong>or</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Past</strong> <strong>Decade</strong><br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physiology</strong> <strong>or</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e, adm<strong>in</strong>istered by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Nobel</strong> Foundation, is awarded<br />
once a year f<strong>or</strong> outstand<strong>in</strong>g discoveries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> life sciences and medic<strong>in</strong>e. It is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
five <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong>s established <strong>in</strong> 1895 by Swedish chemist Alfred <strong>Nobel</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vent<strong>or</strong> <strong>of</strong> dynamite,<br />
<strong>in</strong> his will.<br />
What has <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physiology</strong> <strong>or</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e to do with <strong>the</strong> life science <strong>in</strong>dustry? We may f<strong>in</strong>d<br />
an answer from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> awarded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> past decade.<br />
2010 Test Tube Baby Technology<br />
<strong>The</strong><strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physiology</strong> <strong>or</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e 2010 was awarded to Robert G. Edwards, a British<br />
scientist known as <strong>the</strong> "fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> test-tube babies" f<strong>or</strong> his "f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong> vitro<br />
fertilization". Robert G. Edwards makes it possible to treat <strong>in</strong>fertility, benefit<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>or</strong>e than 10% <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld's couples. July 25, 1978, <strong>the</strong> birth date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld's first test-tube baby, is <strong>the</strong> best<br />
recognition <strong>of</strong> Edwards' tireless eff<strong>or</strong>ts. His contribution represents yet ano<strong>the</strong>r milestone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
hist<strong>or</strong>y <strong>of</strong> modern medic<strong>in</strong>e. Nowadays, <strong>the</strong> technology <strong>of</strong> IVF keeps <strong>in</strong>novat<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> first<br />
generation IVF and <strong>the</strong> second generation test tube baby to <strong>the</strong> third generation IVF, benefit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
tens <strong>of</strong> millions <strong>of</strong> families.<br />
2009 Telomeres and Telomerase Protect Chromosomes<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physiology</strong> <strong>or</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e 2009 was awarded to Elizabeth H. Blackburn from <strong>the</strong><br />
University <strong>of</strong> San Francisco <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America, Carol W. Greider from Johns<br />
Hopk<strong>in</strong>s Medical College <strong>in</strong> Baltim<strong>or</strong>e, and Jack W. Szostak from Harvard Medical School <strong>in</strong><br />
recognition <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir discovery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mechanism by which telomeres and telomerase protect<br />
chromosomes. <strong>The</strong>y solved one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> maj<strong>or</strong> biological problems, which is how <strong>the</strong> chromosomes<br />
self-replicate completely dur<strong>in</strong>g cell division and how <strong>the</strong> chromosomes are protected from<br />
degradation. <strong>The</strong> solution exists at <strong>the</strong> chromosome ends - telomeres, and telomere-f<strong>or</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g<br />
telomerase. <strong>The</strong> discovery <strong>of</strong> this basic cellular mechanism has <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>the</strong> depth <strong>of</strong><br />
understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> cells, elucidated <strong>the</strong> mechanisms <strong>of</strong> disease and contributed to <strong>the</strong> development<br />
<strong>of</strong> emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>rapeutic approaches, especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> anti-ag<strong>in</strong>g and anti-cancer<br />
<strong>the</strong>rapeutics.<br />
2008 <strong>The</strong> discovery <strong>of</strong> HPV and HIV<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Physiology</strong> <strong>or</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e 2008 hon<strong>or</strong>ed German scientist Harald zur Hausen<br />
who found cervical cancer and French scientists Françoise Barré-S<strong>in</strong>oussi and Luc Montagnier<br />
who found human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). <strong>The</strong> discovery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> HPV virus is <strong>the</strong> basis f<strong>or</strong><br />
vacc<strong>in</strong>e research, and provides a clearer "target" f<strong>or</strong> humank<strong>in</strong>d to overcome cervical cancer. Now,<br />
scientists have developed cervical cancer vacc<strong>in</strong>e on this basis, which not only gives a "scientific<br />
gift" f<strong>or</strong> <strong>the</strong> global women but is also <strong>of</strong> great reference to human prevention and treatment <strong>of</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r cancers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future. At present, <strong>the</strong>re are 3 k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> HPV vacc<strong>in</strong>es listed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>or</strong>ld,
namely, bivalent, quadrivalent and non-bivalent. It is because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> HIV virus discovery that we<br />
developed new methods and reagents f<strong>or</strong> blood tests to diagnose AIDS and developed anti-HIV<br />
drugs, which have greatly prolonged <strong>the</strong> life span <strong>of</strong> AIDS patients.<br />
