GUlU W0LI)ING POSITION ONE This target is frequently missed due to the shooter varying his gun hold position prior to calling. This practice will upset his timing, resulting in a desperate stab or a long slow tracking of the target. A good position of gun hold is around 45', then come smoothly and quickly on to the target. Breaking it over the target crossing point. It was only recently that a keen skeeter said to me - "George, in every article you write on shooting, you never fail to stress how important it is to have the gun properly fitting the shooter. Is this advice really so important and why is it so?" Well to cut a long story short, it was 1% hours later after two rounds of skeet instruction during which time I related to him my personal experiences with gun fitting. At this stage my friend was well able to see my point. In the vears iust after W&I; War 11 we had very little cgoice of sho&uns"and apart from the old Webley & Scott and Greener double barrels, very little else was available. They were inexpensive to buy, something like two pounds, ten shillings each. They proved an ideal rabbit and snake gun for the farmer. I finally bought myself a Browning Auto standard model, plain barrel without rib, bored half choke. However, I was far from happy with the standard field stock and its long pistol grip which felt Like a cricket bat handle. I went to work on it, fitting a Monte Carlo comb plus a complete new pistol grip, which was needed in order to have complete control of the gun. I was then able to point the muzzle exactly where I was looking. It made shooting better scores easier. I continued to use the Browning Auto with a great amount of success for several years, finally switching to the over and under as they became available, around 1948. Clay target shooting was beginning to recover and expand. Because of this the shooter's eye will be looking into the back of the action instead of down along the barrel rib. This position is not uncommon wifh many skeet guns, it will cause low shooting. Compare the eye position on the lower gun, note how the eye position is up above the rib line where it should be, enabling the shot to be fired with target always visible over the front bead. As an example both my trap gun and skeet guns have the very same measure- ments with one exception - length of pull is '/4 inch shorter on the skeet gun, because I use an off shoulder gun position at skeet.
