W and C Scott (Gunmakers) was founded in 1834, by a uniquely talented craftsman. William Middleditch Scott. A successful gunmaker, he filled contemporary Patent books with inventions pertaining to guns. One of which - the Scott spindle - is used to this day in many gun locking systems. Wand C Scott amalgamated with the Webley Revolver Company in 1897, and continued to produce fine shotguns for a number of decades. Today the modern hand made to order W.C Scott double gun is more than a joy to use. . . It's also for the foreseeable future, an extremely sound investment. Your comments about the ALP were right on the ball. I read your "Shooting-Shorts" and both like it's contents and enjoy all of it. It does good for the sport, something which has been lacking over the last few years. The late Fred Burns was a mate of mine, we won DDs with each other and shot together often. He was ten times champion of champions at both clays and live birds, which was not a bad effort. I came home from NZ to be told of his passing and drove over to Shepparton where many trap shooters came to his resting place. I for one, am with you on the great idea for a "Hall of Fame" re your column comments, June C.T.S.News. I have the glass balls, the type first used before clays, Melbourne Gun Club coins to operate the Live bird traps (of old) and a general meeting card, Essendon Gun Club 1908, plus 1912 Bernleigb Gun Club Championship badge, which should be with all other such things put into a Hall of Fame collection with the view for dl shooters to see. I have given the Junior High Gun to s Nationals and a Junior trap High Gun. Keep up the good work Roger, you have the backing of many, many shooters, and we look forward to the news each month. Yours faithfully, Bill Attwood 0 Page 26 Two Twenty The following concerns two shooters now passed on who had many things in common. They were both near the allocated span of three score and ten years, were both very good clay target shots, and they were much more than keen. (From here on I shall refer to them as Bill and John). They only differed in one aspect which was that John owned a car and Bill did not drive, so consequently the following events occurred: Early one Sunday morning Bilf rang John and suggested they go to a shoot which was to be held at a small but never-the-less popular club. This was in the days when shooting on Sundays was to say the least, taboo. That did not make a great deal of difference as this club conducted shoots on Sundays quite regularly. How it was managed very few shooters knew nor did they care as long as there were targets to shoot at and the shoot was well patronized. I was however once told on good authority that the second name of the local law was "Horatio" which was very helpful indeed. Now back to our two shooters. John said that he would like to attend but being Sunday and the law being what it was, he said he would not be going and that was final. However, he did agree to go along after Bill said he would pay for the petrol and also the entry fees for the events. After arriving in good time, all were enjoying themselves what with good condi- tions, good scores and a barbeque. Bill having finished,his first round went to "see a man abut a dog" (a water spaniel, I believe). On the path leading back to the shooting area he was confronted by a young policeman who asked him what he was doing there. Not only was Bill a good shot but a quick thinker and assuming a very bland expression, replied, "I heard some unusual noises and thought I would have a look". The constable very quickly told him to "Clear off and to mind his own business". Bill did not need to be told a second time and faded into the clump of trees where he waited until the coast was clear and then returned to find out that unbeknown to the local police, a squad from Melbourne called in and put an end to a pleasant Sunday afternoon's sport. Apart from that, things were not too bad as the guns were not confiscated and the shooters were dealt with in the local Court which inflicted rather light fines and they were all invited to an afternoon's shoot (during the week I might add!) which they enjoyed particularly when thcy were joined by the S.M and several members of the Court staff. That was only part of the story which ended on a happy note; Bill had been told to "clear off' payed the fine imposed on John and John won the main event for the day with Bill a dose second. 0 o Platon Zapantis (left) congratulates other medal winners. GRIFFITH CLAY TARGET CLUB At the Annual General Meeting of the Eriffith Clay Target CLub held on March 19, 1983 the following office bearers were elected: President: Keith Sim; SeoretaryiTreasurer, Bernice Britain PO Box 1685, Griffith 2680. Phone (069) 62 6308. TUMUT GUN CLUB The Annual General Meeting was held on April 26, 1983. Executive elected were Kevin Woodbridge, (President), Brian Dowel1 and Russel Percival (Vice Presidents), Robert Baker (Secretary-Treasuer), Brian Dowell (Shoot Marshall), Don Clout (Publicity Officer). Some sort of record may have been set by Robert Baker who now enters his fifteenth consecutive year as Secretary-Treasurer of this Club. Club facilities consist of two DTL layouts, night shooting, club house, childrens play area and a highly efficient social committee. Shoots are conducted on the second Sunday of each month.
