Chapter 1<br />

ARFOR – The Army component and senior Army headquarters of all Army forces assigned or attached to a<br />

combatant command, subordinate joint force command, joint functional command, or multinational<br />

command. (FM 3-94)<br />

Army Civilian Corps – A community within the Army Profession composed of civilians serving in the<br />

Department of the Army. (ADRP 1)<br />

Army core competencies – The Army’s essential and enduring capabilities that define the Army’s fundamental<br />

contributions to the Nation’s security. (ADP 1-01)<br />

Army design methodology – A methodology for applying critical and creative thinking to understand, visualize,<br />

and describe unfamiliar problems and approaches to solving them. (ADP 5-0)<br />

Army doctrine – Fundamental principles, with supporting tactics, techniques, procedures, and terms and<br />

symbols, used for the conduct of operations and which the operating force, and elements of the institutional<br />

Army that directly support operations, guide their actions in support of national objectives. It is authoritative<br />

but requires judgment in application. (ADP 1-01)<br />

Army ethic – The evolving set of laws, values, and beliefs, embedded within the Army culture of trust that<br />

motivates and guides the conduct of the Army professionals bound together in common moral purpose.<br />

Army Health System – A component of the Military Health System that is responsible for operational<br />

management of the health service support and force health protection missions for training, predeployment,<br />

deployment, and postdeployment operations. Army Health System includes all mission support services<br />

performed, provided, or arranged by the Army Medical Department to support health service support and<br />

force health protection mission requirements for the Army and as directed, for joint, intergovernmental<br />

agencies, coalition, and multinational forces. (FM 4-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

Army leader – Anyone who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences people<br />

to accomplish organizational goals. Army leaders motivate people both inside and outside the chain of<br />

command to pursue actions, focus thinking, and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization.<br />

Army personnel recovery – The military efforts taken to prepare for and execute the recovery and reintegration<br />

of isolated personnel. (FM 3-50)<br />

Army Profession – A unique vocation of experts certified in the ethical design, generation, support, and<br />

application of landpower, serving under civilian authority and entrusted to defend the Constitution and the<br />

rights and interests of the American people. (ADRP 1)<br />

Army professional – A Soldier or Army Civilian who meets the Army Profession’s certification criteria in<br />

character, competence, and commitment. (ADRP 1)<br />

Army requirements review board – The Army force commander's established board to review, validate,<br />

approve, and prioritize selected contract support requests. Also called ARRB. (ATP 4-92)<br />

Army Service component command – (DOD) Command responsible for recommendations to the joint force<br />

commander on the allocation and employment of Army forces within a combatant command. Also called<br />

ASCC. (JP 3-31) See FM 3-94.<br />

Army special operations aviation – Designated Active Component forces and units organized, trained, and<br />

equipped specifically to conduct air mobility, close combat attack, and other special air operations.<br />

(ADRP 3-05)<br />

Army special operations forces – (DOD) Those Active and Reserve Component Army forces designated by the<br />

Secretary of Defense that are specifically organized, trained, and equipped to conduct and support special<br />

operations. Also called ARSOF. (JP 3-05) See FM 3-05, FM 3-18, ATP 3-75.<br />

Army team building – A continuous process of enabling a group of people to reach their goals and improve their<br />

effectiveness through leadership and various exercises, activities and techniques. (FM 6-22)<br />

artillery target intelligence zone – An area in enemy territory that the commander wishes to monitor closely.<br />
