call forward area – In gap-crossing operations, waiting areas within the crossing area where final preparations<br />

campaign – (DOD) A series of related major operations aimed at achieving strategic and operational objectives<br />
within a given time and space. (JP 5-0) See ADRP 3-0, ATP 3-07.5.<br />
campaign plan – (DOD) A joint operation plan for a series of related major operations aimed at achieving<br />
strategic or operational objectives within a given time and space. (JP 5-0) See FM 6-0.<br />
canalize – (Army) A tactical mission task in which the commander restricts enemy movement to a narrow zone<br />
by exploiting terrain coupled with the use of obstacles, fires, or friendly maneuver. (FM 3-90-1) See also<br />
tactical mission task.<br />
capacity building – The process of creating an environment that fosters host-nation institutional development,<br />
community participation, human resources development, and strengthening of managerial systems.<br />

captured enemy documents and media – Any piece of recorded information previously under enemy control<br />
regardless of its form—written, printed, engraved, and photographic matter as well as recorded media and<br />
media devices—that pertains to the enemy, weather, or terrain that are under the U.S. Government’s physical<br />
control and are not publicly available. (ATP 2-91.8)<br />
carrier-owned containers – Containers owned or leased by the ocean liner carrier for the movement of<br />
intermodal cargo. (ATP 4-12)<br />
casualty – (DOD) Any person who is lost to the organization by having been declared dead, duty status –<br />
whereabouts unknown, missing, ill, or injured. (JP 4-<strong>02</strong>) See ATP 4-<strong>02</strong>.2, ATP 4-<strong>02</strong>.55.<br />
casualty evacuation – (DOD) The unregulated movement of casualties that can include movement both to and<br />
between medical treatment facilities. Also called CASEVAC. (JP 4-<strong>02</strong>) See ATP 3-07.31, ATP 3-55.6,<br />
ATP 4-01.45. (Army) Nonmedical units use this to refer to the movement of casualties aboard nonmedical<br />
vehicles or aircraft without en route medical care. (FM 4-<strong>02</strong>)<br />
casualty operations – The process of recording, reporting, verifying, and processing casualty information from<br />
unit level to Headquarters, Department of the Army; notifying appropriate individuals and agencies; and<br />
providing casualty notification and assistance to the primary next of kin. (ATP 1-0.2)<br />
catastrophic event – (DOD) Any natural or man-made incident, including terrorism, which results in<br />
extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the population,<br />
infrastructure, environment, economy, national morale, and/or government functions. (JP 3-28) See<br />

C-day – (DOD) The unnamed day on which a deployment operation commences or is to commence. (JP 5-0) See<br />
FM 4-01, FM 6-0.<br />
center of gravity – (DOD) The source of power that provides moral or physical strength, freedom of action, or<br />
will to act. Also called COG. (JP 5-0) See ADRP 3-0, FM 3-24, ATP 3-05.20, ATP 3-53.2, ATP 3-57.60,<br />
ATP 3-57.80, ATP 5-0.1.<br />
censor zone – An area from which radar is prohibited from reporting acquisitions. Normally placed around<br />
friendly weapon systems to prevent them from being acquired by friendly radars. (FM 3-09)<br />
certification – Verification and validation of an Army professional’s character, competence, and commitment to<br />
fulfill responsibilities and successfully perform assigned duty with discipline and to standard. (ADRP 1)<br />
character – Dedication and adherence to the Army Ethic, including Army Values, as consistently and faithfully<br />
demonstrated in decisions and actions. (ADRP 1)<br />
characteristic – A feature or quality that marks an organization or function as distinctive or is representative of<br />
that organization or function. (ADP 1-01)<br />
checkpoint – A predetermined point on the ground used to control movement, tactical maneuver, and orientation.<br />
