GEORGE MCLAIRD BOOK 3 PREPARING FOR DEATH AND DYING ACKNOWLEDGING EVERY SIGNIFICANT LOSS IN YOUR LIFETIME It is customary to acknowledge the death of humans with gatherings and rituals ranging from elaborate (for the rich and famous) to modest (for the rest of us). Unfortunately, it is not customary to acknowledge with a ceremony the loss of friendships, jobs, health, moving from a loved home or the death of a pet. Skilled parents hold memorial services for pets. And, if possible, there is a graveside service in which the pet is buried in a box. Sometimes the site is identified with a headstone or plaque. My wife and I buried one of our beloved dogs in our garden and had a river rock engraved with her name on it. 37
