I HEAR YOU’RE AFRAID OF DYING OR AFRAID SOMEONE YOU LOVE WILL DIE BEFORE YOU MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR ALL LOSSES, NOT JUST FOR THE PHYSICAL DEATHS OF HUMANS While teaching at four residential drug and alcohol recovery centers over a ten-year period, I encouraged the clients to hold a memorial service for their old life as an addict. This type of service can be done alone or with a few trusted friends. The loss of: r our addiction r any bad habit r our health r our job r our vocation r our home r a dream that will not be realized All deserve acknowledgement. This can be done by drawing a picture, lighting a candle, playing selected pieces of music or whatever would be perfect for you to do. 40
REV. GEORGE MCLAIRD A SIMPLE CELEBRATION OF LIFE CEREMONY One evening we had a couple over for dinner. A few days earlier a mutual friend in his 80’s died. We had all been with him a few days prior to his death. Following supper we cleared the table and placed a beautiful lace tablecloth on it which he had given us. It had belonged to his mother. We began our simple ceremony with a toast to him, his life and his accomplishments and our friendship. One at a time each of us lit a candle and spoke about a loving memory or two we had of him. We concluded the ceremony with a final toast. The whole ceremony took maybe six or seven minutes but it proved extremely comforting for the four of us. It was meaningful enough that as I write about it, tears of gratitude have come to my eyes. This is an example of a simple Celebration of Life for a dear friend. You can do this sort of ceremony alone or with a few friends to acknowledge and honor someone you loved or admired who is now dead. ACKNOWLEDGING A WONDERFUL TREE, SAUSALITO PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AND SAUSALITO WOMAN’S CLUB I became the pastor of the Sausalito Presbyterian Church in 1975. Near the entrance of the sanctuary stood a mature and very large and beautiful cypress tree. I was told a story about how that tree figured in the founding of the Sausalito Woman’s Club.
