LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
A warm and cordial welcome to
the fourth issue of High Notes,
the UBC School of Music’s
newsletter. I am happy to be
back after a year of study leave,
and return to find myself astonished
and gratified by the volume and quality
of work taking place at the School. As
usual, there is so much activity here at
the School of Music that it would be
impossible to describe it all, but inside
you’ll find a selection that reflects the
richness of activities and the joy of
music that the School represents.
The excellence of UBC’s students,
composers, theorists, field researchers,
and musicologists is reflected in an
expanded awards section of High Notes.
We also take pride in appreciating the
individuals and corporations whose
generosity has helped the School to
become one of the outstanding locations
for music study in North America. A
full list of these supporters is published
here, as well as information on how you
can join the ranks of friends of the UBC
School of Music.
We’ve made many friends in the community
as well. These links afford our
faculty and students performance
opportunities before wider audiences,
and allow an ever-larger segment of the
community to share in our growth and,
ultimately, the fruits of our labour:
concerts, symposia, books, recordings,
papers and lectures. These links are also
valuable to our young musicians in
developing their careers. You will discover
more in this issue as we update you on
the Borealis String Quartet and some of
our new off-campus partnerships.
I hope you enjoy High Notes. For
OPERA SPOTLIGHT UBC MUSIC
Opera Ensemble
The UBC Opera Ensemble under the
direction of Nancy Hermiston has
returned from another successful summer
in the Czech Republic. The Ensemble
worked with the opera house in Usti nad
Labem where they performed in a new
production of Massenet’s Manon in French
and a revival of Janacek’s The Cunning
Little Vixen in Czech. The young
Canadian cast was filmed in their
premiere performance of Manon for a
television program that aired nationally
in the Czech Republic this fall. The
students also performed a concert with
the Teplice Philharmonic, which met
with an enthusiastic response from the
large audience. To end the tour the
Ensemble traveled to Nürnberg where
they performed an evening Gala for the
Musikalischer Damen Club Nürnberg,
accompanied by Head Coach and Music
Director, Richard Epp. The thrilled
audience gave the performers a standing
ovation — a wonderful ending to a month
of intense learning and performing!
This season, Opera Teas will be
presented at UBC Robson Square. Two
a revival of their 2001 production
of Lehar’s The Merry Widow conducted
by Richard Epp. A new production of
Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, sung in
Czech, will be featured in the spring.
Conductor Norbert Baxa, General Music
Director of the Opera House in Usti nad
Labem, and Stage Director Josef Novak,
also from Usti nad Labem, will lead
the Ensemble in this production. The
Ensemble has worked with these professionals
for the past four years in Usti, and
now Vancouver audiences will be able to
see the fine performances this team and
the Ensemble are able to produce.
The Merry Widow runs December 12 –15,
2002 at the Chan Centre. The Bartered
Bride runs March 6 – 9, 2003 at the
IN MEMORIAM UBC MUSIC
Professor emeritus
Cortland Hultberg
Faculty, students, alumni and music
lovers will miss three illustrious associates
of the School of Music who passed
away last season: professors emeriti
Cortland Hultberg and Elliot Weisgarber
and promising alumnus Wallace Leung.
All three enriched the School of Music
during their time here and leave legacies
of musical and pedagogical achievement.
Weisgarber (Dec. 5, 1919–Dec. 31, 2001)
and Hultberg (Sept. 5, 1931–Jan. 3, 2002)
joined the School in 1959, just as UBC
began granting degrees in music. Leung
(Dec. 8, 1968–Jan. 18, 2002) graduated
with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1992.
Weisgarber was a clarinettist, composer
and ethnomusicologist. His study of
Japanese music, the shakuhachi bamboo
flute in particular, led UBC to offer
courses in ethnomusicology, a discipline
in which the School is now recognized
internationally. He was a friend and
mentor to many young composers and
musicians, including Wes Foster, VSO
principal clarinet and composers
Michael Conway Baker, Neil Currie
and Frederick Schipizky.
Hultberg taught theory and composition,
established the Electronic Music
Studio in 1965 and managed the recording
facilities for many years. He founded
the UBC Chamber Singers, directed the
internationally award-winning Phoenix
Chamber Choir, and was a beloved figure
at the School of Music. Hundreds of his
former students now teach in classrooms
and sing in choirs. Some, such as Barry
Truax, Alexina Louie, Lloyd Burritt, and
Robert Pritchard are prominent composers.
Others, like Morna Edmundson
and Ramona Luengen, lead choirs of
their own.
Leung founded, with other UBC
graduates, The Little Chamber Music
Series that Could, which has premiered
the works of many UBC alumni. He also
founded the Helikon Ensemble, and was
Music Director of the Delta Youth
Orchestra, Fraser Valley Symphony,
Gateway Theatre and Vancouver
Philharmonic Orchestra. He was Music
Director of the Prince George Symphony
at the time of his death in New York.
PERFORMANCES UBC MUSIC
Performance is one of the central activities
of any music school. Access to artists of
national and international reputation, and
generous performance opportunities set
the School of Music apart from many
other musical training programs.
As part of a commitment to student
performance opportunities, the School
of Music presents more than 200 concerts
per season.
Regularly scheduled events include
the Wednesday Noon Hour concerts
series, the Pacific Spirit Concerts series
and Friday Noon Hour @ Main (Library),
BOREALIS STRING QUARTET
UPDATE
The School of Music’s string quartet-inresidence
has generated lots of excitement
since they formed in 2000. It’s now an
official “not for profit” society, with a
board of directors and the ability to
accept donations and offer tax receipts.
The quartet played a series of concerts
as part of the Vancouver Chamber Music
Festival, produced by the Vancouver
Recital Society, and has been invited
back for the next three years. As well,
the quartet has scheduled concerts at
UBC’s Recital Hall this season, which
include: September 25, October 24 (with
In addition to the concerts outlined on
previous pages, the School takes pride in
working with professional music organizations
throughout the community to
present and produce some of the finest
international talent available. Our partnerships
encompass many musical styles,
but all provide the opportunity for
School of Music students and faculty,
as well as the general public, to hear
wonderful music and to participate in
higher profile public events. Some of our
community partners include:
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
Many School of Music instructors are
VSO regulars and guest artists. As well,
the Jean Coulthard Readings, named in
honour of one of BC’s most celebrated
composers, give emerging young composers
an opportunity to have their
compositions read by the Vancouver
Symphony, conducted by Bramwell Tovey.
These young composers submit their
work to a jury at the Symphony that
selects six compositions to be read by
the Orchestra. At last year’s Readings,
Christopher Nickel (B.Mus. 2001),
Each year, Early Music Vancouver holds
concerts and the Early Music Festival
on campus at UBC. As well as playing
in concerts with Early Music Vancouver,
violin sessional Marc Destrubé leads the
Pacific Baroque Orchestra, “ensemble
in residence” at the School of Music.
The International Community
The UBC School of Music welcomes
many international students and faculty
members, but is particularly proud of
the international component of the UBC
Summer Music Institute, coordinated by
Martin Berinbaum. Under the leadership
of Mr. Ringo Chan from Hong Kong, 76
students took part, ranging in age from
10 to 17, from 18 different private
schools in Hong Kong. One of the highlights
of their time at UBC was an
opportunity for a string quartet from
Hong Kong to work with Joel Stobbe
(cellist of the Borealis String Quartet).
The students played in the various
groups and had two hours each day of
intensive English training. In all, 250
students attended the Summer Music
Institute in 2002. In 2003, the goal is to
bring about 125 students from a larger
cross section of Hong Kong schools and
expand the camp to three weeks.
CONFERENCES
This year, the UBC School of Music played
host to the Pacific Northwest Music
Graduate Students’ Conference in October.
All sessions were held at Gessler Hall
over two days, and Dr. Richard Kurth
gave the keynote address, entitled
“Forbidden Images”, an examination of
the theological problem of representing
the divine and its relation to the music
of Arnold Schoenberg.
As well, in September music students
were enthusiastic participants in the
first Multidisciplinary Undergraduate
Research Conference held at UBC. This
conference demonstrated how researchbased
The live recording of last season’s
School presentation of Elgar: Dream of
Gerontius received 4 out of 5 stars when
reviewed by Rick Phillips on Sound
Advice, CBC Radio’s weekly recording
review guide. Phillips said: “It’s hard to
believe that this recent, live, all Canadian
recording just heard was made with
students...but what comes across here is
an event. There’s a young, fresh, exciting
tension and electricity to this recording
that others lack. Bruce Pullan holds all
the forces together very well and it’s
obvious that weeks of hard rehearsal
went into this performance. The recording
is clean, clear and very full. It gets
a very strong 4 out of 5 stars.” (See
Recordings, page 10, for production details)
