PERFORMANCES UBC MUSIC BOREALIS STRING QUARTET UPDATE The School of Music’s string quartet-inresidence has generated lots of excitement since they formed in 2000. It’s now an official “not for profit” society, with a board of directors and the ability to accept donations and offer tax receipts. The quartet played a series of concerts as part of the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, produced by the Vancouver Recital Society, and has been invited back for the next three years. As well, the quartet has scheduled concerts at UBC’s Recital Hall this season, which include: September 25, October 24 (with In addition to the concerts outlined on previous pages, the School takes pride in working with professional music organizations throughout the community to present and produce some of the finest international talent available. Our partnerships encompass many musical styles, but all provide the opportunity for School of Music students and faculty, as well as the general public, to hear wonderful music and to participate in higher profile public events. Some of our community partners include: The Vancouver Recital Society Please see above for information on our co-presentation of School of Music faculty member Alexander Korsantia. 6 Borealis String Quartet COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS David Harding, viola) and February 15 (with James Campbell, clarinet). The Borealis String Quartet is Patricia Shih and Yuel Yawney (violins), Nikita Pogrebnoy (viola), and Joel Stobbe (cello). The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Many School of Music instructors are VSO regulars and guest artists. As well, the Jean Coulthard Readings, named in honour of one of BC’s most celebrated composers, give emerging young composers an opportunity to have their compositions read by the Vancouver Symphony, conducted by Bramwell Tovey. These young composers submit their work to a jury at the Symphony that selects six compositions to be read by the Orchestra. At last year’s Readings, Christopher Nickel (B.Mus. 2001), Derek Olive (M.Mus.), Lisa Miller (current DMA student), Jason Nett (former student), Anna Hostman (former student) and Chris Ludwig (M.Mus. 2002)
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS each had compositions performed in May. Nett and Miller were also successful applicants the previous October. Vancouver Opera Association In addition to co-producing the Ben Heppner Gala in 2000, proceeds of which helped establish a fund for UBC students on their way to a professional singing career, Opera Division Head Nancy Hermiston regularly performs in and directs productions for the company. Associate Professor Gary Relyea is often featured in Vancouver Opera productions. Students have also sung in the chorus, most recently for the October production of Aïda. As well, Jesse Read recently served on the committee to select a new Principal Conductor. Vancouver New Music Vancouver New Music’s Artistic Director Giorgio Magnanensi teaches composition and improvisation at the School, and VNM co-produced the October concert by the Verdehr Trio. An acknowledged leader in the field of new music, the Verdehr Trio has created a large repertoire by commissioning more than 140 new works from some of the world’s most prominent and exciting composers, including UBC’s Stephen Chatman, whose work, along with that of Sculthorpe and Sheng, was featured at this concert. Istituto Italiano di Cultura Vancouver The cultural arm of the Italian government regularly helps co-produce concerts like October’s appearance by pianist Antoni Sardi de Letto and the UBC Opera Ensemble’s production of L’Italiana in Algeri. 7 Early Music Vancouver and Pacific Baroque Orchestra Each year, Early Music Vancouver holds concerts and the Early Music Festival on campus at UBC. As well as playing in concerts with Early Music Vancouver, violin sessional Marc Destrubé leads the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, “ensemble in residence” at the School of Music. The International Community The UBC School of Music welcomes many international students and faculty members, but is particularly proud of the international component of the UBC Summer Music Institute, coordinated by Martin Berinbaum. Under the leadership of Mr. Ringo Chan from Hong Kong, 76 students took part, ranging in age from 10 to 17, from 18 different private schools in Hong Kong. One of the highlights of their time at UBC was an opportunity for a string quartet from Hong Kong to work with Joel Stobbe (cellist of the Borealis String Quartet). The students played in the various groups and had two hours each day of intensive English training. In all, 250 students attended the Summer Music Institute in 2002. In 2003, the goal is to bring about 125 students from a larger cross section of Hong Kong schools and expand the camp to three weeks. UBC Jazz Ensemble PHOTO: BRIAN HAWKES
