COMPOSITION AND COMPOSERS Graduate students of composition Colin Bradley Pridy and Geoffrey Wooden were named winners in the 50th annual BMI Student Composer Awards at a reception in New York City in the summer. The award is open to composition students age 14 – 26 and the two were the only students chosen from Canadian universities. Keith Hamel, professor and director of the electronic music studio, had his work Kolokolchiki for 2 pianists and 2 percussionists published by the Canadian Music Centre in 2002. His Faded Memories, Faded Jeans, published by EME in Paris, was extensively revised for a performance in Vancouver, January 26, 2002. David Mansell composed a concerto for string ensemble and tap dancers as part of his graduation requirements, which was performed at the Recital Hall and profiled in The Vancouver Sun. Recent DMA grad Jocelyn Morlock’s Lacrymosa placed in the top ten at the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris. Her work will now be heard all over the world. Robert Pritchard’s Escape (My Soul): for Bass flute and interactive computer music system or CD was performed at a Musik Aus Kanada concert in Zürich, Switzerland, Feb 11, 2002 at the Schweizerischen Zentrum für Computermusik. The concert was broadcast by Radiostudio DRS (Switzerland). The same piece was presented at Dialog Kanada — Liechtenstein in Triesenberg, Liechtenstein, Feb 17, 2002. The prolific Stephen Chatman was once again extremely busy this past season. Premieres of newly commissioned works include Trio, commissioned for the Verdehr Trio at Michigan State University, Proud Music of the Storm, commissioned by CBC and the BC Arts Council for the Orpheum Theatre’s 75th anniversary celebration, Per Aspera ad Astra commissioned by CBC for their September 11th coverage “Loss and Legacy” and broadcast live from the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. Recently published compositions include Come Unto Me, Song and Music, Remember, ...into a mist with bells, and Preludes for Piano, Books I and II. Michael Tenzer’s recently completed Piano Trio, commissioned by the Canada Council, will receive its premiere at the Up to Our Ears Festival in the spring. Sessional instructor Rodney Sharman had a new work for pianist/singer/actor entitled The Garden premiere at the Western Front. DMA student Rachel Iwaasa performed the new piece, which featured text by Peter Eliot Weiss. School of Music alumnae Melissa Hui and Grace Lee have had compositions chosen to represent Canada at the international The World Women in Music Today 2003 festival. Chosen works will be presented in Seoul, South Korea in April. 11
