LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
A warm and cordial welcome to
the fourth issue of High Notes,
the UBC School of Music’s
newsletter. I am happy to be
back after a year of study leave,
and return to find myself astonished
and gratified by the volume and quality
of work taking place at the School. As
usual, there is so much activity here at
the School of Music that it would be
impossible to describe it all, but inside
you’ll find a selection that reflects the
richness of activities and the joy of
music that the School represents.
The excellence of UBC’s students,
composers, theorists, field researchers,
and musicologists is reflected in an
expanded awards section of High Notes.
We also take pride in appreciating the
individuals and corporations whose
generosity has helped the School to
become one of the outstanding locations
for music study in North America. A
full list of these supporters is published
here, as well as information on how you
can join the ranks of friends of the UBC
School of Music.

We’ve made many friends in the community
as well. These links afford our
faculty and students performance
opportunities before wider audiences,
and allow an ever-larger segment of the
community to share in our growth and,
ultimately, the fruits of our labour:
concerts, symposia, books, recordings,
papers and lectures. These links are also
valuable to our young musicians in
developing their careers. You will discover
more in this issue as we update you on
the Borealis String Quartet and some of
our new off-campus partnerships.
