Master Chef Promotions Awards
2015 Cook Off!
The Master Chef Promotions “Cook Off” took
place on Wednesday 7th January 2015, at South
& City College in Birmingham. The event tested
the exceptional culinary skills of the top national
restaurant chefs of each participating region as
voted for by the Great British public!
Each chef competed against each other in order
to fight for the number one place to have the
‘Best Restaurant/Chef’ for their region.
The Cook Off challenge required the competitors
to produce their very own “Creative Signature
Dish” each chef had 60 minutes to create
their finished dish. The chefs cooked under
the watchful eyes of the celebrity judges and
presenter who tasted their finished product and
decided who won ‘Best Restaurant/Chef’ for that
region.
The judging panel consisted of a mixture of
well-known celebrity chefs and food critics from
all over the UK, starting with Pat Chapman, Chad
Rahman, Paul Fulford, Manju Malhi, Peter Grove
and Franck Pontais!
The First Annual Master Chef Promotions
Awards were held on Sunday 25th January 2015.
The red carpet event recognised and paid tribute
to the chefs and businesses who have made
major contributions to the food industry and
who have been nominated by the public for their
hard work and dedication.
We are please
Successful
Re-launch
A bellydancing masterclass,
armchair aerobics and circle
dancing were just some of the
activities showcased at an event
for the over 50’s yesterday.
Guests packed out the Apex in celebration of
the re-launch of the Bury St Edmunds Friendship
Centre at their new town centre meeting place.
With members ranging from 58 to over 90 years
of age, the Friendship Centre offers informal
befriending and social activities for their members
as well as advice on legal matters, health and
exercise.
Jane Andrews, Manager of the Friendship Centre
said: “We’re all about preventing or helping to
alleviate loneliness or isolation. It’s friendship that’s
the most important thing because of the impact it
has on a person’s mental and physical health.”
She said loneliness was an issue “everywhere,”
adding: “People put on a face. You would be
amazed how many people look as though they are
having a good day, but really behind the scenes
they really need something like this.”
She said men were particularly shy of coming to
such clubs, but actually the Friendship Centre
- which has about 100 members - had a good
gender mix.
Friendship Centre meetings are held on the third
Monday of every month from 10.30am at the Apex
with membership costing £10 for the year.
Anyone interested in joining can just come along
or call Jane Andrews on 01284 763318 or email
Bon Chic
Bon Genre
“Good style, good class”
By DANIELLE FROM HUXsTERS
PARISIAN CHIC...
With the unfortunate events in Paris lately, it
reminded me how much I love and adore their
natural ability to keep calm and keep stylish in
events and fashion.
Parisian Chic is one of my favorite genres in
the fashion world. WHY? Well, when executed
correctly (correctly being the operative word) this
genre is not only classy but also timeless.
I disagree STRONGLY--- You either have it or you
don’t I’m afraid ladies. You have to pull off this
look correctly and accurately in order to make it
look effortless.
“The French woman is the one woman on earth
that has the natural ability of allure, elegance and
pure class. She dresses like a lady and she dresses
for herself. She is in love yet is still autonomous.
She is involved yet free. And most of all she is
beautiful inside.”
Now much to my dismay, British born actress
Jane Birkin remarked that, “Chic you can learnit’s
just a form of grooming”...
I am British but i'm afraid Brits I will choose
Parisian Chic over British eccentricity due to the
fact I like the feminine dressing figure.
#vintagegeektime
The term Bon Chic Bon Genre was applied in the
early 1980s to the french equivalent of British,
"Sloane Rangers".
Typical Uniform:
• Mackintosh
• Ballet Shoes
• Trousers
• Cashmere Sweater
• Birkin Bag
• Cartier wrist watch
This Bon chic was a known style for both men
and women that mostly represented the upper
classes. We clearly see that Audrey Hepburn
adopted this style throughout her career.
The colour palette
of PC are vividly
represented by
blacks, grays
and navy due to
their slimming
and easy mixing
qualities.
Back to the now... You can achieve this with
pastels, which are a huge hit this year! In the
picture below I have mixed pastels together to
create a chic and effortless conclusion to which
I wore at the New York City Knicks Basketball
game on 14th Jan 2015 at The O2 London.
My main point when dealing with any clients from
A-listers to house wives is...
"Yes adopt a genre that you like, take the basic
from it, then add your personality - because after
everything is striped down there is only one you
on this universe, so dress because you can."
Are you hoping to impress your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day?
Well help is at hand as we have put together some great ideas of
things to impress your loved one. From creating somthing to
enjoying our romantic East Anglian countryside we have it
covered, on a budget too!
VAL DAY
FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE #28 | VALENTINES
1. Prepare a picnic
Most people forget about lunch
on Valentine’s Day, but it can be
the perfect way to have some fun!
Whether you eat in or out just
spend the time talking, you are
sure to have a great time.
6. Go exploring
East Anglia has some
beautiful places to visit, why
not stroll around Lavenham or
take a trip to Snape Maltings,
the walks there are simply
beautiful.
2. Treasure hunt
Write a series of love notes, with
clues about your plans. Hide
them in different places, such
as on the fridge and in their
workbag. It’s a fun twist and
will add some much needed
excitement to the normal,
mundane Valentine’s Day,
especially if the two of you are
working.
3. Look after them
Simple things, such as having a
cup of tea ready when they get
home or running them a bath
and lighting some candles, are
often the most appreciated. Show
them how much they mean to you
by making them feel good about
themselves and they are sure to
return the favour!
4. Take them to their favourite
restaurant
Make sure you get the booking
in early as this year Valentine’s
Day falls on a Saturday so it is
likely to be busy in most places.
5. Visit the beach
We are lucky to be near the coast so grab your
coats and head on down to the beach for a
romantic stroll and maybe even a cheeky ice
cream!
Make a reservation
Go exploring
Visit the beach
7. Make and design your own
cocktail
Something to remember… we
hope! Select your favourite
spirits and together you can join
your favourites to create your
very own cocktail.
8. Treat them to a spa day
There are some great packages
on offer this Valentine’s Day –
check in at your local spa to
see what they can do for you.
9. Cook them their favourite
meal
If you are a dab hand in the
kitchen then why not rustle
up a treat, your partner will
admire you for your efforts.
10. Take up a hobby
Now is the perfect time to
surprise your lover with a hobby
you can both share, this may be
horse riding, dancing lessons or
even nature walks.
The idea of Valentine’s Day is not
about how much you can spend,
but how much you care.
If you put your heart into it your Valentine’s Day
treats they will be sure to go down a storm.
Photography at your
Wedding
By Catherine Starling
Aside from the
venue, one of the
most important
suppliers of a
wedding is the
photographer.
It’s the one supplier you will
certainly spend time with before,
during and after the ceremony.
The majority of couples will spend
between 10-20% of their overall
budget on photographers who
create life long memories of their big day. Therefore choosing
the right photographer is important!
There are various types of photography used to capture
weddings; the main ones are Traditional, Modern, Reportage or
Artistic.
Some photographers specialise in a certain type, others can
do a combination. Which ever you choose, I personally think
a combination of two is a good choice. For example, the
traditional images of the posed bride and groom, with loved
ones and the whole group shot is great as it ensures all guests
are captured, great to use for gifts as well. The more modern or
reportage approach is wonderful for storytelling and capturing
guests/couples in private personal moments when they do not
know they are being photographed, sometimes these are the
best ones.
VAL DAY
FEBRUARY FEBRUARY 2015 2015 | ISSUE | ISSUE #28 | #28 WEDDING
Questions to ask yourself before choosing a
photographer:
• Do you like their style? Check through their
portfolio and ask to see a slideshow of their
work.
• How experienced are they?
• Are they familiar with your venue?
• Are they creative? Does each wedding
portfolio stand out as personal to that
individual couple.
• Do you like their personality? Remember
you could spend at least 1-2 hours with them
on your big day.
• Have they a varied portfolio?
• Do they offer various packages?
Tips:
• Make a list of shots you would like, with
whom and where.
• Make sure your groomsmen
also have a copy and liaise to help
your photographer gather people
when needed.
RETRACK INTRODUCTIONS
Looking for someone
Special
Let’s face it, if you are single when February 14th comes around it can
sometimes feel like a bit of a trial!
It appears that everyone around
you is celebrating and you are
the only one not receiving cards,
presents and being wined and
dined.
Of course this is not true and a growing trend
these days is for friends and family to send cards
and little gifts such as chocolates to each other.
This ensures that no-one feels left out or lonely if
they are not part of a couple on this day. Look at
Valentine’s Day not just as a day for couples but
also as a day to express your love and gratitude
to a good friend or member of your family who is
always there for you.
individual and therefore more likely to appeal to
the opposite sex. Decide that this year will be
the year you meet that special someone, resolve
to get fit, treat yourself to some new clothes,
get a new haircut and gentlemen remember to
keep those beards and moustaches trimmed!
You may also decide that you need a little extra
help finding that special someone and if you do,
you may want to use an introduction agency like
Retrack Introductions.
By joining a dating agency like Retrack whether
you are single, separated, divorced or widowed
we can help you move forward, confident in
the knowledge that we meet all of our clients
personally and that they are genuine people
looking for love just like you.
If you are not part of a couple this year do
something special for yourself anyway. Buy some
flowers, get a massage or enjoy a lovely warm
scented bath. Make plans to go out with friends
and enjoy yourself. If you stay positive you are
more likely to come across as a happy, confident
We believe we can provide a unique dating
service and with 14 years of matchmaking
experience. Lesley can guide you through the ups
and downs of dating to help you find that ‘special
someone’. For an informal chat call Lesley
• Serious lower-back or neck injury
Have a go:
2. Be sure to tuck your forearms and elbows up
close to the sides of your torso. Inhale and press
your forearms and elbows firmly against the floor.
Next press your shoulder blades into your back
and, with an inhale, lift your upper torso and head
away from the floor.
3. Lift from the breast bone. Then release your
head back onto the floor. Depending on how high
you arch your back and lift your chest, either
the back of your head or its crown will rest on
the floor. There should be a minimal amount of
weight on your head to avoid crunching your
neck.
4. You can keep your knees bent or straighten
your legs out onto the floor. If you do the latter,
keep your thighs active, and press out through
the heels or toes. Stay for 15 to 30 seconds,
breathing smoothly. With an exhalation, lower
your torso and head very carefully to the floor.
Draw your thighs up into your belly and squeeze.
1. Lie on your back on the floor with your knees
bent, feet on the floor. Inhale, lift your pelvis
slightly off the floor, and slide your hands, palms
down, below your buttocks. Then rest your
NOTE: Please take care with all postures, never
Health of the
heart
The heart as we all know is integral
to everything we do as a human
being, but heart disease and blood
pressure issues are two of the most
common challenges we often face.
Here are some suggestions on complementary
remedies and therapies to deal with common
heart problems and also a look at the heart from
an emotional and energetic perspective and how
to help heal it from these aspects too.
Salt: Follow a strict low salt diet. This is
essential for lowering blood pressure. Read labels
carefully and avoid those food products that have
“salt,” “soda,” “sodium,” or the symbol “Na” on
the label.
Fibre: Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables,
such as apples, asparagus, bananas, broccoli,
cabbage, cantaloupe, aubergine, grapefruit, green
leafy vegetables, melons, peas, prunes, raisins,
squash and sweet potatoes.
Juice: Include fresh “live” juices in the diet.
The following juices are healthful: beetroot,
carrot, celery, citrus fruit, parsley, spinach, and
watermelon.
Water: Drink filtered water only.
Vitamin C: 1000 mg twice daily.
Hypertension is caused either by problems in the
kidneys, or “atherosclerosis” or hardening of the
arteries.
Flaxseed: Take 2 tablespoons of oil daily.
All things pertaining to the Health of the heart for
Valentines!
There is much evidence nowadays that the body
is not just made up of the physical stuff we can
touch and feel, but it has an emotional energy
and a connection with other people, animals and
nature.
1.Be open with your emotions.
2.Stop clinging to your feelings.
3.Practice the art of acceptance.
Try incorporating these three reminders into
your daily life, and always remember that love
is the greatest healer. Eat more dark green leafy
vegetables and drink green smoothies and green
Matters of the
Heart…
keep it healthy
BY Emma Harvey Lawrence
Keep your heart healthy for Valentine’s
Day and remember the other 364 days of
the year…
Your heart is one of the most important organs in
your body. Let’s face it, they’re all pretty important…
apart from the appendix, perhaps.
It’s also one of the most romanticised organs of the
body. Phrases such as ‘follow your heart’, ‘keep love
in your heart’ and to be ‘good at heart’ all strengthen
both the emotional and physical attachment to our
ticker.
So it’s obvious to isn’t it? We have to ensure that we
each take extremely good care of our cardiovascular
system.
Taking a look at a few sites online, including the NHS
Live Well website (www.nhs.uk/livewell) here are a
few ways to keep your heart healthy:
Get active
For many of us, work and other commitments can
get in the way.
But you can move into things gradually: go for a
walk on your break at work, take the children to the
playing field and get involved in the fun and games,
meet your friends at the climbing wall, swimming
pool or ‘pay as you go’ fitness class - rather than the
pub.
Give up smoking
Smoking is one of the main causes of coronary heart
disease. A year after giving up, your risk of a heart
attack falls to about half that of a smoker.
Smoking cessation provided by a qualified
hypnotherapist or Acupuncture from a qualified
practitioner could help achieve your desire to quit.
Manage your diet and weight
Being overweight can increase your risk of heart
disease.
Equally, you could be a fair size with no obvious
dietary issues on the outside and still be at risk. Stick
to a well-balanced diet that works for you.
A Nutritional Therapist can provide a tailored plan
that educates, suits your lifestyle and optimises your
chance to lose weight or improve your diet.
Walk off stress
If you’re feeling under pressure, clear your mind
with a walk. It will help put your ideas in order and
reduce tension. Stress, long-term, can be seriously
damaging both physically as well as mentally.
Questions
for Dr Bella Smith
1) How can I get fit and lose weight
in 2015?
This time of year we are often trying to cut back
after a season of over-indulging. Small changes
to our lifestyle can have a big impact on our
sense of wellbeing in addition to our health.
Some people find having a ‘Dry January’ can
help them cut down alcohol and lose weight.
Drinking in moderation is important as there
are many hidden calories in alcohol.
Make a plan of how much weight you
want to lose and set yourself a goal,
recording your calorie intake for each
day. By writing a food diary you will
soon realise the size of portion you
need to lose weight, its often smaller
than you think! Drink plenty of water to
rehydrate you – its calorie free! Finally
find an exercise that you enjoy, if its
running on your own listening to music
or doing an exercise video in your front room,
it all adds up. Turn to others for moral support,
there is evidence that joining a slimming club has
better results than trying to lose weight on your
own. Encourage other members of your family
to join you in your 2015 challenge, you will love
seeing the results.
2) Since Christmas I have been
getting really bad indigestion, what
should I do?
losing weight can help reduce these symptoms. If
the acid persists despite these lifestyle changes
you will need to see your GP for a discussion
and an examination. In some cases you will need
medication to try to reduce the acid in your
stomach or antibiotics if you are found to have a
bacteria in your stomach. If your GP is concerned
they may refer you for further tests to look at
your stomach and oesophagus in more detail.
3) How can I stop
smoking?
I always say to my patients
‘Never give up giving up’.
It sounds naff but its true.
Sometimes people give up for
a year and then one cigarette
will set them back to square
one. But each attempt will
get easier until one day it will
click. There is so much evidence now that tells
us how dangerous cigarettes are for our health.
From increasing the risk of cot death in passive
smoking children to contributing to heart
disease, strokes and lung cancer in adults. The
benefits also include saving money, improving
our dental health and preventing wrinkles!
There are smoking cessation clinics run in most
GP surgeries that provide both motivation and
medication to help with stopping smoking. Enroll
in one today to find the best for you – whether it
be tablets, nicotine replacement or just support.
For a large number of people acid reflux is due
to lifestyle. Drinking too much alcohol, smoking,
eating spicy foods and stress can all increase
acid reflux. By making small lifestyle changes and
TAKING CONTROL
BY Emma Harvey Lawrence
Feeling stressed? Overwhelmed by your anxieties? Living with
depression? Taking a trip to your local GP can often leave you with
more questions than answers. GPs provide a phenomenal service
but often don’t have the time to spend with patients experiencing
any of the above.
There are cost effective
ways to take control and
find ways to overcome
emotional illness. One
example of this is Group
Therapy or Self-Help
Courses.
Benefits of Group Therapy and Self-Help Courses...
• Group members may bring up issues that strike a chord with
you, which you might not have been aware of or known how to
bring up yourself.
• A natural process of enhanced acceptance of self and others
occurs as one learns to relate more honestly and directly with
others in the group.
38
wELLBEING
FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE #28 | HEALTH & WELLBEING
• The group provides an opportunity for personal
experimentation it is a safe place to risk enough to
learn more about yourself.
Benefits of Group Therapy and Self-Help Courses...
Also, the financial element can be significantly
reduced.
In a group environment, others serve as mirrors
that reflect aspects of yourself that you can
recognise and explicitly choose if you want to
modify or change. An empowering process, filled
with positive psychology.
few sessions people get comfortable enough to
interact in the group.
Would it be better to have individual therapy?
A common myth is that groups are somehow
second-rate treatment. Group therapy is
recommended when your counsellor or GP
believes that it is the best way to address your
concerns.
You can discuss the advantages or disadvantages
of a group for your particular concerns and needs
with your GP or counsellor.
Feeling nervous, not knowing what to expect?
It is common for people to experience some
discomfort over the prospect of talking in a
group initially; this initial anxiety is quite normal
as most people have never been exposed to a
group therapy environment and don’t know what
to expect. Almost without exception, within a
FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE #28 | FOOD AND DRINK
It’s not every day that you’re
invited into the heart of one of the
UKs fastest growing, best loved
brewery’s. Bounce Magazine were
only too glad to accept...
Walking through picturesque Southwold, my
first memory was the aroma of malt and hops.
This truly is a brewery town and first up on
the tour we learnt how intertwined the town’s
history actually is with the art of brewing beer.
Look back through the sands of time in this
coastal town and you’ll see Johanna de Corby.
She was the first recorded brewer on the site
of modern day Adnams HQ in the 14th centuryand
was prosecuted for her labours!
Ever wondered what it’s like to be a beer
brewer? This tour will certainly give you a taste
– quite literally! We chomped our way through
each and every variety of dried malt and hops.
So distinctive were the flavours that we were
actually able to match them to our favourite
Adnams beers.
The brewing facilities looked like the set of a
sci-fi movie.
Shining and sparkling stainless steel vats and
pipes made up the engine room and looked
too impressive to be locked away for much of
the time. We learnt that the modern, energy
efficient brewery was opened in 2008 and
produced East Green, the UK’s first Carbon
Neutral beer.
If the Pièce de résistance was the tasting
session at the end of the tour,
then the Coup
de Grace was the
special ‘Tally-Ho’
beer at 7.2% ABV!
This beer was
actually branded
‘Tally-Ho-Ho-Ho’
for Christmas, and
seemed apt, as it
would certainly
send you to sleep
by the fire.
There was the
full line up
of Adnams
own brews on offer, from favorites like Ghost
Ship, to the innovative Jack Brand Craft Beer
range. It was a great chance to try some of
these new flavours and I’d give a personal
recommendation of the Dry Hopped Lager
which is a crisp, hoppy lager that’s packed full
off flavour with tropical and citrus notes!
The Adnams Brewery tour is a fascinating
insight into beer making and indeed British
history. A snip at £12 a head,
you’ll have a great afternoon
by the coast, and you’ll get to
claim a free beer of your
choice too!
Soak the chickpeas overnight. Drain, tip into a saucepan and
cover generously with fresh cold water. Bring to the boil,
simmer for 45 minutes and drain.
Heat the oil in a large casserole and brown the lamb all
over. Remove and set aside. Pour off most of the fat, leaving
1 tablespoon in the dish, add the onions and fry for 8-10
minutes until soft.
Preheat the oven to 160C/Gas 3/fan oven 140C. Mix together
the ginger, garlic, chillies, cumin, coriander, pepper and
paprika. Add half of this to the onions, tip in the tomatoes
and cook for 2-3 minutes. Put in the lamb and chickpeas,
cover generously with water (about 850ml/1.5 pints), bring
to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Cover and cook in the
oven for 1.5-2 hours until the chickpeas are really tender.
(You can prepare up to this stage the day before. Cool,
cover and refrigerate. Bring back to simmering point before
starting step 4).
Remove from the oven and stir in the remaining spice
mixture, the saffron and cinnamon, carrots, apricots, honey
and salt. Cover and return to the oven for 45 minutes-1 hour
until the lamb is tender and the vegetables cooked. Scatter
the almonds and coriander on top.
Vitis Rupestris, Vitis Berlandieri and Vitis Riperia
– These are native to North America and perform
well in resisting vine pests. The wine made from
these species is not liked by most people but
their rootstocks are used to graft onto Vitis
Vinifera to protect them from pests.
The original Vitis Vinifera came from the Middle
Varieties
Of the many varieties of Vitis Vinifera there
are about 300 or so around the world used for
making wine that we enjoy drinking. Each country
has its own indigenous varieties but France can
claim first place in exporting varieties around the
world. If you could choose the top varieties the
list would be endless. Here are my top 10. This
might be my desert island choice.
White
Red
Chardonnay
Pinot Noir
Sauvignon Blanc
Cabernet Sauvignon
Riesling
Merlot
Pinot Grigio
Grenache
Muscat
Syrah
White
Chardonnay
Originally from Burgundy in France it is grown
successfully around the world. Usually dry with
a hint of sweetness, it is acidic with apple, white
fruits and pear notes. When used with oak and in
cool climates, can be buttery and nutty flavours.
Sauvignon Blanc
From the Loire Valley and Bordeaux in France, it
is also grown around the world. In cooler climates
it has a distinct cut grass, nettles and gooseberry
flavour, with mineral and zesty undertones.
Famous in New Zealand, where it achieves
intense asparagus and grapefruit flavours.
Riesling
Apples , lime and petrol. Germany is the key
country where it is common in the Mosel and
Rheingau. It is also grown in Australia where it
has lime and lemon flavours. In Alsace France it
achieves more floral and perfumed tones.
Pinot Grigio
Orinally known as the Pinot
Gris in Alsace, but
now more often using
the Italian spelling. A
delicate spicy grape
with a touch of
oiliness. It can be a
rose (pink) wine due to
its pink coloured grapes.
Muscat
Fragrantly perfumed and grapey flavoured
variety. It can be dry as in Alsace but more known
as a dessert wine often fortified especially around
the Meditteranean. Aromas of candied fruit,
exotic spice and raisins.
Red
Pinot Noir
Originally from Burgundy it has homes all round
the world, but prefers a cooler climate. A vast
array of characteristics, It can be reminiscent of
red berries and spice, cherry and loganberry. It
can also develop with age into more silky tones ,
leather and vegetable.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Now the most planted grape variety, it is one of
the mainstays of Bordeaux. Grown around the
world it is often described as blackcurrent and
sometimes mint. When used with oak can give
rise to vanilla, cedar, tobacco and spice.
Merlot
Softer in texture with a plummy flavour. Smoother
than the Cabernet Sauvignon it was at one time
the world’s favourite grape. Couple with Cabernet
Sauvignon it is another important grape in
Bordeaux.
Grenache
More of a Meditteranean grape, it develops
fine fruit flavours with other mild spices. A
main component of Rhone wines including
Chateauneuf du Pape. It is also used to
produce delightful Southern
France dessert wines.
Syrah
Also known as the Shiraz
in New World countries.
Smoky, peppery and
spicy. The main red
grape of the Northern
Rhone and a component
of Southern Rhone.
Warmer climates give rise
to more berry fruits and
chocolatey flavours.
It is difficult to pick just 10 favourite grapes, it
could easily be 50 or more for example Viognier,
Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Marsanne, Zinfandel,
Chenin Blanc etc are just a few.
It is also common practice to blend 2 or more
varieties together. Top Bordeaux wines are a
blend as also are many Rhone wines.
Suggestion
It is interesting to taste a wine from Cabernet
Sauvignon against a Merlot. Take notes of what
you find. Then source a wine with both Grapes
and see the difference.
Coffee Quotes..
BY pADDY BISHOPP
Being a bit of a coffee nerd these days I am always taking photo’s of cafes
with great quotes to advertise their business, get your interest as you
walk past or just make you smile.
I am also always being sent them by my friends
and family and especially Scott, whom I do
believe is nerdier than me. Below are my Top 14
and I have started off with a Valentine theme as
February 14th fast approaches.
1. All you need is love and more coffee.
2. Coffee, chocolate and men, some things
are just better rich.
3. My blood type is coffee.
4. Today’s To Do List:
• Get up
• Make coffee
• Drink coffee
• Make more coffee.
5. Come here you giant cup of
beautiful coffee and lie to me about how much
we’re going to get done today.
6. I didn’t sleep well last night so made my
coffee this morning with Red Bull instead of
water. I got half way to work when I realised I
had forgotten my car.
7. Depresso: the feeling you get when you run
out of coffee.
8. Water is the most essential element of life
because without it you cannot make coffee.
9. I’ve started drinking coffee out of a clear
mug, so people know where my tolerance level
is at.
10. A good man can make you feel strong; full
of energy and able to take on the world. No
Sorry... That’s coffee. Coffee does that.
11. I drink coffee because I need it and wine
because I deserve it.
12. Good Morning! A fresh cup of coffee and
my Facebook page is up’ just look at that, I
have already achieved all my goals today.
13. I force people to have a coffee with me,
just because I don’t trust that a friendship
can be maintained without any other senses
besides a computer or cellphone screen.
And number 14 as it is Valentine’s has to be
‘Coffee Keeps me busy until it is acceptable to
drink wine’ so make sure you bring your
Valentine for a cup of Paddy & Scott’s Coffee
on Abbeygate Street in Bury St Edmunds or
Wells Close in Framlingham on February 14th
before 17.00, and then you can enjoy the wine.
BY MARIA BROADBENT
OF CaSA DEL MAR
For the
love of food
The preparing and sharing of
food has always been a way of
communicating love and caring.
Sitting down as a family or as a couple allows
for quality conversation and helps consolidate
relationships. Sadly with TV dinners and mobile
phone usage this precious experience is being
eroded. So, whoever you are dining with on
Valentine’s night – focus on the person sharing
the experience!
Aphrodisiacs! Urban myth or
substantiated evidence?
For fun I googled aphrodisiacs whilst researching
our Valentine menu and discovered that most
were illegal, inedible or immoral! So we will not
be offering Tiger Penis Tapas or Spanish Fly
Omelette or even Salamander Brandy. However
Watermelon may make an appearance, see an
excerpt from Science Daily.
Watermelon May Have
Viagra-effect
July 1, 2008 : Texas A&M
University
A cold slice of watermelon
has long been a Fourth of July
holiday staple. But according to
recent studies, the juicy fruit may be better suited
for Valentine’s Day. That’s because scientists say
watermelon has ingredients that deliver Viagralike
effects to the body’s blood vessels and may
even increase libido.
Many other aphrodisiacs may just have a placebo
effect and are based on their visual similarity
to “body parts!”. These include asparagus and
oysters, (please don’t ask me to explain any
further).
On a more practical level you may be hoping to
find out how to impress your loved one through
culinary expertise. Firstly remember that it is not
just the food, we need to set the mood. Music,
lighting and the table setting all add to the overall
romanticism of a meal.
Flowers on a table can look nice but they can
get in the way of your view of your loved one, so
perhaps give a bunch of flowers (this works for
both sexes) and use the petals from one
of the flowers strewn over the table. I
would also keep candles low, use
any glass container to put tea
lights in, this is important as tea
lights can easily cause a fire.
Do no over stretch yourself and
get all hot and bothered - this is
not attractive!
Put the broccoli on full power in the microwave for
Bleeding
Heart Martini
Keep up the fear factor with a
Bleeding Heart martini, a drink with
a pickled beet that “bleeds” from a
would caused by a cocktail spear.
Oh, Cupid what are you like, always sticking
sharp objects where they don’t belong. But if
reckless stick-play has led us to sausages on
stick and lollipops, it can’t be all bad, right?
Snack food takes on a celebratory edge when
served on a stick, and Valentine’s Day is the
perfect excuse to take aim. Just don’t go
pointing skewers at your sweetheart. There
are better ways to command affection.
Cupid’s Arrow
1. Chill four martini glasses in the freezer or fill
with ice water and let sit until frosty, about 5
minutes (pour out water).
Ingredients
• 2 ounces dry vermouth
• 8 ounces premium gin
• Ice cubes
• 4 Pickled Baby Beets, each
placed on a cocktail skewer
2. Add the vermouth, dividing evenly; swirl to
coat the glasses, then pour out.
3. Add gin to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
4. Shake vigorously until chilled; divide among
chilled glasses.
By THE ANGRY WAITER
5. Garnish each with a skewered pickled baby
beet, and serve immediately.
A dreary week in February was
made brighter by an invitation from
the Milsom chain of luxury Hotels
and Restaurants. We were delighted
to dine at the award winning Le
Talbooth and stay at the stunning
Maison Talbooth nearby.
Climbing the steep, winding drive to the Victorian
mansion I slipped into a period drama.
The house stood proud atop the hill cutting
a fine figure, as if to cast jurisdiction over the
immaculate surrounding grounds and the wide,
panoramic expanses of farmland in the valley
below.
So picturesque was the setting in the heart of
Constable country in Essex, that a little drizzle
couldn’t dampen the magic of the grounds or
nearby Flatford Mills.
It would be impossible to fault the service at
Maison Le Talbooth, and the hotel manager
Wendy warmly greeted us at the door. There was
a warm, genuine atmosphere, which was welcome
after a long week of work.
Not to be disappointed, the room exceeded
expectations with a bed that would have had
even the most troublesome of sleepers nodding
off in an instant. The bathroom was more of a spa
and TV had every channel that SKY could offer.
One of the surprises of the evening was the pool
house. By this time it was dark and we wandered
down the meandering path, through the grounds
to the walled pool area. I cast open the high gate
and was met by steam rising from the pool into
the night sky. Beyond this was a Jacuzzi, more
steam, an outside fireplace and sitting area,
barn-like pool house and honesty bar. Although
a foreign concept to me, it was touches like the
honesty bar that contributed to the relaxed and
safe feel at Maison Talbooth.
Dinner was served at the Le Talbooth restaurant
around half a mile away. No need to book a taxi
as the hotel were on hand to run guests down
in the Milsom branded Range Rover at your
convenience. The stunning 17th century restaurant
is nestled on the banks of the river Stour. Le
Talbooth boasts exceptional service, awardwinning
food and fine wine.
Guided through the menu by attentive and
knowledgeable staff, I opted for Lobster Risotto,
pancetta, courgettes and rocket cress to start.
Saving herself for a meat dish for her main course,
Rachel enjoyed the Spinach and Duck Egg Ravioli,
autumn truffle and herb tempura.
The sommelier of the evening really added to
the experience, with an extensive knowledge and
passion for wine, with charisma and humour to
boot. We were confident to be in Ivars’ capable
hands, who matched a different wine to each of
our individual courses.
The Trio of Dingley Dell Pork, butternut squash,
cavolo nero and pickled apple came highly
recommended for my mine course and was
coupled beautifully with a medium bodied red.
The flavoursome pork was balanced with the
sharpness of the apple and was exceptional.
Rachel had Thetford Forrest Venison Saddle,
thyme infused polenta, blackberries, kale and
red wine jus, which I hear was also superb.
Dessert was Lemon Meringue Souffle, Autumn
Raspberry & Thyme ice cream accompanied
with a Limoncello Shot, as well as Black Cherry
and 72% Chocolate Millionaire, Honeycomb and
pistachio. As if that was not enough, Ivars was
good enough to ply us with four dessert wines to
have in ascending order of sweetness.
As was a theme for the whole stay at Milsoms,
it was the small details, as well as the large, that
caught our attention. Rounding off dinner with
a coffee, we were presented with a mahogany
box. Lifting the lid revealed a velvet interior and a
fantastic array of handmade, specialist chocolates
and truffles. It was a perfect way to conclude a
truly exceptional dining experience.
Gerald Milsom, who founded the hotel and
restaurant chain in the late 1960’s, leaves a
legacy of remarkable service and quality. I can
wholeheartedly recommend this country retreat
and taste of luxury in the beautiful surrounds of
Constable Country.
The Road to Mandalay... Featured as a famous Rudyard
Kipling poem, a more modern upbeat Robbie Williams
song and also a lesser know 1935 song by Lawrence Tibbett.
The latter holds special memories
for me as it was my Grandfathers
favourite song and the song playing
at his funeral as we said our final
goodbyes.
seem to be perfectly timed just as everyone is finally
dropping off and Myanmarese karaoke music blaring
just loud enough that you can hear it over anything that
you might be listening to on your headphones.
Our bus arrived a little early and after some half heated
haggling with taxi drivers we reached the centre of
But why always the road? Why not Mandalay
Mandalay at about 6:30am. Due to the time of day we
itself? Well... basically because Mandalay’s rubbish.
had arrived we asked our driver to
The reason the road is so often
mentioned is because it’s the best
dropped us off at a small hotel.
bit. I’m slightly surprised they’re
not all singing about the road out
Although there isn’t much in
of Mandalay.
Mandalay itself, seeing the sunset
Our experience of the road was
Taungthaman Lake was something
a little different to Rudyard’s
truly majestic.
day. Ours came in the shape of
a behemoth of a bus, trundling
As I sat there, watching the fiery
along during the darkness of
orange glow of the sun drop down
night in an 8 hour, overnight
below the horizon, I raised one
marathon. I must say the bus
last glass to the memories of my
was pretty amazing, complete with “inflight”
Grandfather, wishing I could tell him all about the road
entertainment systems and even a stewardess (if he never knew, yet loved so much.
that’s what their called on a bus).
The Road to Mandalay
As the bus pulled away we settled into our journey
aside from the awful movies the bus journey was a
standard South East Asian affair. Seats that recline
to that perfect point that is neither upright or back
so you just slide down to the floor, toilet stops that
Valentine’s Day is just around the
you achieve this.
February FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE 2015 #28 | ISSUE | HAIR #28& BEAUTY
The key to looking your best is skin care.
A must have product is Microdermabrasion by
Harley Street Skin Clinic, excellent in removing
dead cell’s to leave
your skin clear
and radiant.
Before applying foundation I
highly recommend Dior’s Glow
Maximizer Primer. This keeps your
makeup from moving and gives
your skin a glow. For the perfect
complexion combine this with
Dior’s Star Foundation to enhance
that youthful and
bright appearance.
You cannot go wrong with
a pure red lipstick. Dolce &
Gabbana’s Classic Cream
in Devil is long lasting and
vibrant. Complement this with
a beautiful volume Mascara
such as Dior’s Diorshow. Don’t
forget to use the YSL Touche
Eclat to brighten under your
eyes and help hide those
dreaded black bags.
Remember ladies, men are drawn to women’s
lips more than any other facial feature, and your
eyes are the windows to your sole so frame
them with beauty.
The latest from
Copeland Interiors
By Clare Hindle
It’s been an exciting time for us
here at Copeland Interiors. The
last of our new fabric collections
arrived this week, it’s been a long
wait but totally worth it.
The designer is called Angela
Faulkner, and we now stock her
whole collection of fabrics. We can’t
wait to show our customers.
Background
Angela and her husband live in Shropshire, she
started designing from the comfort of her prize
winning garden, which is the inspiration for her
large scale floral and talent for growing rare and
exquisite flowers, some of which were chosen for
the Telegraphs garden at the Chelsea flower show.
This then progressed to her painting with
watercolours; she focused on individual
flowers, which then led to her exhibiting at
the royal horticultural society and winning
two coveted prizes.
Next on her agenda came greeting cards
showing off her beautiful designs, which
then developed into home ware such as
mugs, tea towels and trays.
venture yet, textiles!
When we saw her stand at Decorex in
something new and exclusive to show case
Spring is
in sight
This month there are signs of the
approaching spring, with bulbs
appearing and wildlife waking up as
light levels and temperatures increase.
There’s plenty to do indoors this month
to prepare for the season ahead.
General Tasks
Although temperatures should start
to rise this month, there is still a
risk of frost and even snow. Protect
vulnerable plants, pots and taps from
frost by wrapping insulation such
as garden fleece around them and
check pots and containers are raised
off the ground if possible.
MAY 2014 | ISSUE #19
FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE #28
Tender trees and shrubs will thank you for a
generous application of dry mulch to protect their
roots from freezing conditions.
Continue to dig over existing beds and borders,
again incorporating as much organic matter as you
can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for
spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to
hungry birds.
Remember not to let leaves accumulate around
alpines - they will die if left damp for long.
Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty
compost to encourage regrowth.
When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths,
check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no
chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses
and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a
little insulation will make a huge difference to your
heating bill. Until next month...
Kate
Top jobs this month:
1. Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some
vegetables under cover
8. Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate
overgrown deciduous hedges
2.Chit potato tubers
9. Prune conservatory climbers
3. Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and
peaches
10. Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over
the winter
4. Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds
off
5. Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished
flowering
6.Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those
that need planting ‘in the green’
7. Prune Wisteria
Le Jour
De l’amore
Whether you love it or hate it,
Valentine’s Day is upon us.
The day of the year to spend with our loved ones,
where romance comes out with bells on, and
everything is seemingly red.
But who says we must conform to the Valentine’s
tradition? Who says our loved ones has to be a
partner? Why not ourselves or our cat or Netflix?
There is no shame in buying a romantic dinner for
two... for one...
The more on my plate the merrier, and as little
red as possible, please. Just like many old ways
now a days, we can have our own spin on them.
People get married on top of planes for
goodness sakes, so why can’t we see Valentine’s
a little differently?
Is is of course February, meaning the chill has
certainly not left yet, and there is still plenty of
excuses available to cosy up with a heap of knit
and snugness.
JUST IDEAS...
This doesn’t mean to say we must leave
Valentines behind completely, and although
I am not in fact a very pink kind of person, I
certainly think it would be a shame to forget
the romance of the day with the soft blushes of
rouge that is assosiated with the day of love.
The house doesn’t have to be scattered with
rose petals to enjoy Valentine’s Day, nor do
banners have to be erected declaring your love
to your wife / husband... or cat...
So what about the smaller details? Keeping out
some of that red from Christmas from napkins,
FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE #28 | HOME & GARDEN
HOW ABOUT TRYING THESE SUGGESTIONS...
BUILD YOUR OWN DEN...
A fun way to bring back a bit of magic this Valentine’s Day would be to
build a sophisticated den for you or your loved one. Can you imagine
the delight of coming home to find that your amour had constructed an
enchanting tent for the two of you to eat, drink, play and tell stories for
the night? (Here is one Bounce made earlier).
Say it with Flowers...
You can brighten your home easily by adding some beautiful flowers.
Since everyone is going to be buying flowers anyway, join the crowd. But don’t just stop
at a bouquet of red roses. Get bright wildflowers for other rooms in your home. Your home will be looking
and smelling beautiful in no time.
Shed Some Light...
Nothing sets a romantic mood like soft, romantic lighting. Switch out bright bulbs for bulbs that offer a softer
light. Use candles to create soft, flickering light. If the idea of using fire makes you nervous, there are also
flameless candles on the market. These candles give the look of a flickering flame without the fire hazard.
Frame and Hang Pictures...
It’s easy to get so caught up in living life that you forget to cherish the memories you have made. Use this
time to go through old photos. Frame and display the ones that you love the most. These might be photos
from memorable trips together, fun times you have had, or loved ones who are important to the two of you.
Find beautiful frames and look for just the right spots to display your most cherished memories.
Hunt proves to be a Lionstamer
as Ipswich get
promotion push back on
track...
There are always key moments,
key decisions in any football
season. A last minute own goal,
a missed penalty, a dramatic
winner, a dodgy referee decision
and so on and so forth.
All of these add up and all will be used as
markers to evaluate a football team’s season,
whether successful or otherwise. In the case
of Ipswich Town fans, Saturday 16th January
2015 could prove to be a landmark date.
The very kind editors of Bounce Magazine
graciously agreed a deadline extension so I
could pen my thoughts post-Millwall.
The reason was simple. A daunting trip to the
New Den had come after Ipswich had endured
a “blip” to quote keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.
The national media had converged onto
Portman Road over the space of four-and-ahalf
days and Town had caught a bit of stage
fright. A 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Premier League
high-flyers Southampton was expected.
against most people’s title favourites Derby,
to come in early January. We are about to
see what Mick McCarthy’s men are all about
ladies and gentleman. What came before
Southampton was even worse. Another 1-0
home defeat, this time to promotion rivals
Derby County was more than a little worrying.
Defeats happen and should be taken in context, it
was only the second time Ipswich had tasted a loss
since the end of August after all.
It was the performances against Derby and
Southampton which fuelled any doubters. Both
performances were largely poor. Too many coming
out of the home dressing room looked laboured, as
if a long and gruelling season was started to show
its effects. Daryl Murphy and David McGoldrick, two
men who have given so much for the fight, looked
especially tired.
Step forward Noel Hunt, the Lionstamer,
who put any fears to rest after
just 15 scintillating minutes at Millwall.
With the hosts fighting for their lives, the
visitors never looked like licking
their wounds as Millwall were
put to the sword three to one.
Mick McCarthy’s men again
proved they have what
it takes to remain in the
Championship top two all
the way through till May.
Noel Hunt proved there
was life after the injured
McGoldrick and the signing
of fellow forward Freddie
Sears from Colchester United
looks another McCarthy
masterstroke.
I write this as the name Billy
Sharp refuses to go away as
the excitement continues to build
over at IP1 and beyond. Blip, what
blip?
WORLD CUP
February sees the start of the
2015 ICC Cricket World Cup
and I for one cannot wait for
it to get started.
By Alex
Scott-Ruddock
England has already made
headlines before the tournament
even started by sacking their
Captain Alistair Cook and
replacing him with Eoin Morgan.
Kevin Pietersen and then had his say when
commenting on the Big Bash in Australia stating
Morgan wanted him in his side. Elsewhere, New
Zealand and Sri Lanka have been fighting it out in
their preparations in what has been an excellent
ODI (One Day International) series. Australia and
India have pretty much just been fighting as part
of their Triangular Series (which also includes
England). Finally on a positive note, A.B Devillers
broke the World Record for the fastest ODI
SPORT
century, smashing the West Indies all around The
Wanderers. His century came off just 31 deliveries
and I must say was truly epic to watch. So with
all this going on before the tournament even
starts in Australia and New Zealand it is safe to
say that for the cricketing fans there is a lot to
look forward to, even with the late nights/early
mornings. The main question however is and
always is with a World Cup... who is going to win?
Having changed the format for this tournament,
the top 4 teams in each group qualify (there are
7 teams in each group). This means that all the
big Test playing nations should in theory get
through the group. This would therefore mean
that Australia, England, South Africa, India, New
Zealand, Pakistan, The West Indies and Sri Lanka
in theory should be the teams who make it to
the Quarter Finals. However this is not as straight
forward as it looks.
I would love to see and Australia vs South Africa
final. I think on paper these are the 2 best sides
around at the moment and I would love to
see both of their batting line-ups take on the
opposing bowling firepower. The winner would
be too close to call but I think home advantage
could potentially tip the balance...unless the
South African skipper A.B Devilliers pulls off
another master class then it is surely theirs to
lose. All I do know is that I cannot wait to see
what happens. Check it out from 13th February
being the opener in New Zealand (who needs
valentines when England Australia is 14th Feb!)
FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE #28 | SPORT
SPORT
By Ross ‘Action Man’ Wishart
Parkour (also known as
freerunning) is the art of getting
from point A to point B in the
most efficient way possible using
the human body and surroundings
for propulsion whilst maintaining
as much momentum as possible.
Elements of the sport actually date back to 1902
when the French military picked up training
techniques in Africa but “parkour” came
to fruition in the late 80’s when
David Belle took his gymnastic
and athletic experience and
coupled it with military training
from his father. With his friends
developed the parkour way of life,
for the traditionalists this is not
just a sport but a state of mind just
like a martial art training a physical
strength and a mental discipline. By
the late 90’s clips had been seen on
TV and its popularity grew until now where it’s a
household name and a regular scene in the latest
Holywood blockbuster.
Action Man joined up with Suffolk’s only parkour
and free running troupe ‘Urban Ateles Parkour and
FreeRunning’ who meet every Thursday evening at
‘The Mix’ in Stowmarket (IP14 1BB) where anyone
interested in the sport can practice, train & learn
from qualified teachers in a safe environment (not
jumping off buildings!) and it’s available for all
ages…
Having never done parkour before (not on purpose
anyway!) it wasn’t long before I was somersaulting
and hurdling over pommel horses all under the
expert tutelage of parkour veterans Sam & Richard
who had me landing more like a feather than a
brick. I’ve seen a number of parkour videos on
YouTube but I was in awe to watch this graceful
act first hand. Even with just a few obstacles I was
amazed by the range of combinations that were
being strung together even by the
groups younger members who were
flying around like teenage mutant
ninja turtles, and loving it!
Whilst this was all great fun it was
also one hell of a workout and if
anyone was looking into a pursuit
for strength and conditioning then
Parkour is it! Or maybe you have
a mini Action Man on your hands
(some would argue that I’m already a mini Action
Man!) and your little ones are perhaps not into the
usual ball sports and/or just love leaping off things,
then great! Get them into ‘The Mix’ on a Thursday
afternoon where they can really express themselves.
Perhaps more artistic pursuits may appeal then
Ateles Parkour sister group the Winters Academy
of Dance have commercial & freestyle dance
classes also at ‘The Mix’ on Monday evenings and
performance arts Tuesday Evenings. Also open to
all ages. Both groups have Facebook pages with
more info, check it out!
FEBRUARY 2015 | ISSUE #28 | PETS
Archie’s
Adventures ...
sponsored by Happy Hounds | 01284 725192
Hey my beloved readers (and
fans)! By now, you all should know
my head is pretty much ruled
by my furry little belly. So when
opportunity strikes, one must simply
take it… no matter what the cost.
Last Saturday, romance was in the air,
red roses filled the room, a special
occasion perhaps, and I was left
alone, fancy them not including
me – hmmph bloomin’ ignored…
but oh those sweet luxury
Chocolat Chocolat Cambridge
Chocolates.
An assortment of flavours,
delicately wrapped up in tissue
paper, contained within a glowing gold
box. I was salivating at the thought of them; I
had to get in that box!
the armchair pivoted across to the other sofa using
my tail to propel me and I leaped onto the coffee
table. Mission accomplished.
Moments later I felt a little peculiar, caught red
handed they walked in as I lay on my back with that
guilty face on hoping that I got away with it.
Then panic struck… they hurried me into
the car like a celebrity exiting a posh
hotel. Before I know it I’m not
getting out to greet my fans I
am at the place I fear the most,
the animal doctors, or vets as
you call it.
I think its safe to say after lots
of treatment I wont be rushing
for chocolate again in a hurry.
But a little note to my doggie friends,
chocolate is toxic to us without quick
action it could lead to devastating effects.
My mission started from the moment the front door
was closed. Action stations… I crawled along the
floor sniffing to find a crumb or two, but nothing,
mind you if truth be told, crumbs wouldn’t have
been good enough for me anyway.
I glanced up again and my beady eyes clocked on
to the glow of the box. Like an athlete I sprung onto
Still what an adventure, one I wont be reliving any
time soon.
I reckon that was probably
the most expensive box of
chocolates they ever had, wont
be ignoring me anytime soon!
A FLYING START FOR LOCAL
MUSIC IN 2015
Small music venues are integral to any local
scene. Despite providing a base for new music to
launch from, a place for people to discover bands
and artists together and a community networking
hub many small venues are under threat from
noise control restrictions or funding issues. On
17th January a soundproofing benefit gig was
held to combat these threats for The Hunter
Club & Doodle Bar, a fantastic venue in Bury St
Edmunds.
VOTER KERNEL, HARDACTORS, GHOST
CARRIAGE PHANTOMS, LOST LUNGS, BEYOND
REVOLUTIONS, YOU THE LIVING and THE
SELECTED all performed a gig organised by
Washing Machine Club Night to help raise £812 to
ensure this brilliant club continues offering bands
the opportunity to perform, however big they are.
Another great piece of news for the local music
scene is that everyone’s favourite animal-disco
related band HORSE PARTY are releasing a
new 7” single with two brand new songs! Due
for release on 23rd February, Out Of Sight
and Receiver are atmospheric, alternativebluesy
songs featuring Ellie Langley’s beautiful
vocals layered over Seymour Quigley’s guitar
and Shannon Hope on drums. You can now
pre-order this lovely little single on Bandcamp
(HORSEPARTYPARTY.BANDCAMP.COM), which,
Voter Kernel
along with immediate download, gets you one of
only 300 limited edition vinyls! Wonderful!
If you want to find out more about a local venue
well worth helping or you feel like discovering
some new music over the coming months be sure
to check out Doodle Bar and Washing Machine on
Playing for change....
By Vicky Hrebien
(Bury Folk Collective Founder)
For centuries people have used
song as a way to record social
happenings, events and rebellions.
In fact, there are some moments in history which
have been transposed into song, which are more
acute and succinct than reams of official documents.
Take the Aberfan disaster in the 1966. One hundred
and forty-four people died when a slagheap dumped
on a mountain above this Welsh-mining town,
became mobile. Slurry, which was thirty-nine feet
deep, swept away a farm, houses and the lives of
many of the people in its path.
The main reasons these people died are because of
something, which causes death day after day around
the globe, poverty, indifference and corporate
neglect. One songwriter, Leon Rosselson took the
authorities to tasks with the simple lyrics of “Palace
Of Gold”. Fast-forward to more modern times, and
you will see that things haven’t changed much.
Twenty-three illegal immigrants, overseen by a gang
master, died while out cockling in Morecambe Bay
in 2004. Cut off from the mainland by the incoming
tide, they were doomed by their limited English
language, knowledge of the area and a lack of
experience. One of our local bands, Sound Tradition,
won the Fastnet Maritime song award in 2013, with
their beautiful and haunting song “Morecambe Bay
Cocklers”.
When all else fails, the simplicity and poignancy of
good songwriting can cut straight to the heart of the
matter, and reveal a myriad of emotions. Frustration,
anger, joy, indignance, happiness, glee and often
a mixture of many conflicting emotions, far more
concise than history books, yet somehow more
relevant. They can trigger awareness and sometimes
a hunger to learn more. Songs can be a call to arms,
a force to unite, to stand against the wrongs of this
world and the chance to listen to the unheard voices
of many ordinary people.
Much more meaningful than Band Aid’s (flaccid
but well intentioned) millionaires huddled round
microphones in a recording studio - original, selfpenned,
motivated, passionate songwriting is a force
which seeps into the very fiber of one’s soul and
makes a difference to those who encounter it.
If you would like to hear it sung.come along to the
Bury Folk Collective at Oakes Barn but please give
us notice as we would have to learn it.
