Welcome from
World Rugby
The Wellington round of the HSBC World Rugby
Sevens Series is always a spectacular tournament
and a demonstration of world-class rugby sevens.
Over the past few years, it has
established itself as a high-point of the
series and one that is always eagerly
awaited by rugby fans throughout the
city and further afield.
This is the third tournament in the
2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Sevens
Series and with two rounds completed,
the All Blacks Sevens could do with the
points as they currently lie in joint-sixth
position, 10 points behind co-leaders
Fiji and South Africa. This year is
shaping up to be a memorable season.
I would like to thank our title sponsor,
HSBC, for its continued commitment
to the game. Thanks also to our other
sponsors, to our broadcaster, as well
as the players, match officials and
organisers.
Have fun!
Welcome
Welcome from HSBC
Welcome to the New Zealand round of the HSBC
World Rugby Sevens Series.
We are proud of our continued support of the HSBC World Rugby
Sevens Series, featuring the world’s finest players battling it out
across the globe in 10 tightly-contested rounds for the world title.
The 2015/16 Series represents a significant landmark in the history of sevens rugby,
with the sport featuring in the Olympic Games for the very first time at Rio 2016.
As the build up to Rio continues, the Sevens Series once again comes to Wellington,
one of the favourite venues in this competition and a city known for its passionate
support of rugby. I’m sure we will see some memorable sevens rugby action
on display as 16 of the world’s best teams compete over two days for the 2016
Wellington Sevens title.
We wish all the teams and players competing in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens
Series the very best of luck in this momentous season.
Chris Russell
CEO, HSBC New Zealand
Kia ora
Welcome to the HSBC Wellington Sevens tournament! This is an
iconic Capital event for dressing up, cheering on your team and
enjoying a day out with friends and family.
The Sevens are back and brimming with colour and vibrancy. The
enthusiasm of the fans and the creativity of the many costumes are
amazing and build the unique character of the Wellington Sevens.
This year the city is alive with Sevens fever. Music, activities, food, art, wine and
craft beer will be on offer on the Waterfront and Civic Square, which is temporarily
Rugby HQ.
There are many ways to enjoy your Sevens experience. Take in the games from the
bleachers with mates or from the Family Zone with little ones, either dressed up in
all your costume extravagance or in your comfy weekend clothes. Either way, you’ll
have a blast.
Have fun, be safe, drink responsibly and enjoy the Sevens! May the best team win!
On behalf of New Zealand Rugby, I’m delighted to
welcome all the teams, match officials and sevens
fans to Westpac Stadium for the 2016 HSBC
Wellington Sevens.
We are thrilled to be hosting the first international sevens
tournament of the year. It has been a magnificent summer
for sevens in New Zealand and 2016 will be a huge year for the sport with the
Rio Olympics just a little over six months away. The Wellington leg of the HSBC
World Sevens Series is always one of the most exciting but this year, the stakes
are definitely raised and we’re looking forward to seeing some incredible on-field
action.
Thank you to all the supporters here this weekend, especially those of you who
have travelled a long way and to the people of Wellington for being great hosts and
supporting this event in your home town.
Our thanks to everyone from New Zealand Rugby, Wellington Rugby, Wellington City
Council and WREDA as well as all the volunteers and commercial partners for your
contribution in ensuring this event is a success.
Have a great weekend!
David Rhodes
New Zealand Rugby President
From the host union, it gives me great pleasure to
welcome you to Wellington for the third round of the
HSBC Sevens World Series.
Wellington has played host to this tournament for 17 years,
and each year we celebrate and thrive off the colour brought to
the city by the fans and the amazing skill levels brought by the
international teams’ players.
We are excited for what is about to play out at Westpac Stadium this
weekend and, with the Olympics later this year, there’s no doubt the onfield
action will be at its finest.
I know the team behind the scenes have also done all they can to make
sure the atmosphere is enjoyed by all.
As a rugby organisation, it is tournaments like this which bring a sense
of excitement and pride to us all, so I thank you for being a part of that
excitement, and wish you all a fantastic weekend.
Two legends of Wellington
Sevens remembered
Wellington sevens will
forever hold a special
place for All Blacks and
Sevens legend, the late
Jonah Lomu. At this
year’s tournament, we
will remember him with
a special video tribute on
Day Two.
Lomu, who passed away in November 2015, was a
Sevens trailblazer. It was where he made the impact
that thrust him in front of All Blacks selectors, and
they named him in their 1995 Rugby World Cup team.
Before the HSBC World Series was introduced, the
Hong Kong Sevens were the focal point of the
game and in 1994, as an 18-year-old, Lomu first
demonstrated his signature class, power and
destruction on the field.
His impact was immediate, helping New Zealand to
break Fiji’s hold on the Hong Kong tournament, and
complete a hat-trick of wins from 1994-96.
A Commonwealth Games gold medal followed at
Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and in 2000 Lomu and the
New Zealand team played in the first Wellington
tournament, finishing second to Fiji.
He capped his Sevens career with the World Cup title
in Mar del Plata in 2001. However, it was followed
by the disappointment of New Zealand being tipped
out in the quarter-finals of the second Wellington
tournament.
Sevens coaching supremo Sir Gordon Tietjens said of
Lomu that despite his size he was one of the quickest
players off the mark in the era in which he played.
Another significant
figure who contributed
enormously to Sevens and
the bid for Olympic Games
inclusion was World Rugby
Sevens operations manager
Beth Coalter. She passed
away in October last year
after a short illness. Involved
in the Hong Kong Sevens for
10 years, she was also a member of the international
federation and contributed to the success of the
HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
Blue Bubble Taxis are delighted and privileged to be Tournament Sponsors for
2016 HSBC Wellington Seven Series.
This is the 17th time that the Sevens Tournament
has been hosted in Wellington with New Zealand
winning 8 times. A win this time will mean
that New Zealand will have won over half of
Tournaments held in Wellington, a record many
sides would aspire to.
We are thrilled to be here with you to enjoy the
skills and the spectacle of seeing the best Sevens
Rugby players in the world.
We wish all the best to the other 15 teams
competing at this year’s tournament and we look
forward to meeting one of you in the final.
Rugby. If you want to know the latest inside gossip
about rugby, just ask your Blue Bubble Taxi Driver.
Cory Jane
Jane says toughness key
to sevens game
12 The HSBC WELLINGTON SEVENS App. is available for download on Android and iPhone

“Being part of the sevens
team taught me to go hard,
and never to give up.“
Wellington Sevens Ambassador Cory Jane was
selected for the All Blacks Sevens in 2006 and
played in five tournaments including Wellington
and the Commonwealth Games. He scored a
try in the Commonwealth Games final, helping
New Zealand to win a gold medal. In his book
Winging It, Jane says the All Blacks Sevens is one
of the most close-knit teams in rugby, on the
field and off it. He also recalls the toughness of
the seven aside game.
“Everything Titch puts you through in a training
session is designed to find out how much you
are prepared to give. In his eyes, you just need
to give 100 per cent. If you’ve only got 50 per
cent left to give, he’ll demand you give 100 per
cent of that 50 per cent. If you only have 20
per cent left to give, you need to give 100 per
cent of that. Actually, that’s probably half the
problem: all that talk about percentages had
me lost after the first 10 minutes.
“Being part of the sevens team taught me to go
hard, and never to give up. There is so much
space in the game that you have to learn how
to take care of business. In fifteens you have
plenty of guys on the field who can cover you
if you make a mistake. In sevens, one mistake
and you cost your team points. It’s no surprise
to me that so many of Titch’s guys go on to
be stars in the test arena too – under him
you develop exceptional skills and become
accustomed to pressure, to big stadiums, and
to the tournament atmosphere.”
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
THE EARLIER THE
BETTER
With a new start time of 11:30, the
head down early to get a good seat
for that match! With gates opening
start earlier on Westpac Stadium’s
bag that will fit under your seat.
Other tips
• Don’t forget to take sunblock to the
stadium, drink plenty of water and eat
throughout the day.
• Remember you should also take warm
clothes for the evening.
• Look out for your mates and stick together.
• Wellington’s central city liquor ban remains
in place over the weekend.
• The ban incorporates the CBD from the
waterfront – including the Stadium Fran
Wilde Walkway – to the Basin Reserve.
SOUTH AFRICA
NEW ZEALAND
After finishing the Sevens World Series
as runners up last season, the Blitzbokke
looked to defend their title in Dubai.
Injuries, suspensions and extra-time
knockouts; it’s hardly been Sevens Heaven
for the All Blacks Sevens so far this series.
They started supremely and didn’t drop a
match in pool play but came unstuck against
a very strong USA side in their Cup Quarter
Final. The South African boys rallied to win
the Plate Final though and continued their
winning streak on home soil where they
took out the tournament in Cape Town.
A major concern for the Blitzbokke will be
the injury losses of Cecil Afrika and a knee
injury to World Rugby Sevens Player of the
Year, Werner Kok. Getting these two stars
fit in time for the Wellington Sevens will be
huge as the team try to improve on their
third place finish in the capital last season.
1.42PM V SCOTLAND SCORE //
The team have had it all to fight against but
with the two stalwarts DJ Forbes and Sir
Gordon Tietjens remaining constant, New
Zealand have managed to achieve seventh
place on the 2015/2016 World Series
standings. But for a team with twelve World
Series titles under their belts, the focus will
be on reaching the top spot once again.
A welcome break will see the All Black
Sevens regroup and recover as they look
to show their class and mettle on home
soil. We watched in Dubai, we watched in
Cape Town and now in Wellington, it’s our
chance to make our voices heard as we
cheer on our Wellington Sevens reigning
SCOTLAND
RUSSIA
Scotland is a team with strong connections
to the Sevens game with the sport
originating in the Scottish town of Melrose.
Despite their ties to the game, the Scots
have struggled to gain momentum in
past World Sevens Series, finishing 7th in
2014/2015. However, they have shown
promise in the initial stages of 2015/2016
series circuit where, despite some early
loses, they finished as runners-up in the
Bowl competition in Dubai and defeated
England in Cape Town to win the Bowl
Final in the second leg of the series circuit.
Currently ranked 10th in the World Series
standings, Scotland will be hoping to
secure more wins as the journey moves to
It’s undeniable this team is set to be
a crowd favourite once again after
showcasing their team’s talent with a
strong start to the series in Dubai. The
team demonstrated the Fijian flair they
are renowned for, beating England 28-17
to take out the opening round of the
Suffering only one defeat in Cape Town to
of the biggest upsets of the Sevens World
defeated New Zealand twice for the first
After finishing the 2014/2015 series on a
Showing a promising start to the World
Sevens Series, England achieved second
place in the opening leg of the World
Sevens Series in Dubai.
Although the English team had a strong
start to the World Series in Dubai, having
beaten Australia, USA and Argentina to be
unbeaten after pool play, the English team
fell short of a win against the current series
champions, Fiji, in the cup final.
With some tough competition in the second
leg of the series circuit in Cape Town,
England head to the Wellington Sevens
placed fifth in the World Series standings.
Past champions of the Wellington Sevens
tournament in 2013/2014 and 2008/2009,
the English lads will be rallying their team
to secure another win in the Wellington
tournament.
The Samoan team are not unfamiliar to
Sevens wins, claiming the crown in the
2009/2010 World Series and achieving
fourth in both 2011/2012 and 2012/2013.
However, the Manu Samoa Sevens are off
to a mixed start in the 2015/2016 Sevens
World Series. They finished seventh
in Dubai and, hit by injuries, the team
struggled to find their feet in the second leg
of the series circuit in Cape Town. Currently
ranking 11th, the Manu Samoa 7s will no
doubt be looking to up their game and get
some more wins under their belt as they
finish in Cape Town places the Kenyans
ninth on the World Series ladder, four
places higher than their overall finish in
last season’s series. It’s all about looking
for positives for the Kenyans and they’ll
be aiming to improve as the series moves
towards Wellington.
The Aussie team had a somewhat
disappointing start to the series in Dubai.
They finished up in sixth place only
narrowly missing out on a plate final win
in what was a nail-biting over-time match
against South Africa.
Although the team finished day one of the
Cape Town Sevens tournament unbeaten,
the Aussies were defeated by South
Africa and Fiji to finish the Cape Town
tournament in eighth place on the World
Series leader board. Despite these losses,
the Australian team have shown promise
in the opening games and will be looking
to improve their performance in the next
stages of the World Series circuit.
With a relatively new team, gaining
experience and developing new players
seems to be a priority for this Australian
side. The Australian team are not to be
underestimated as they work on their
execution in the coming matches.
CANADA
PORTUGAL
Canada showed the slow signs of building
momentum at the back end of 2015. Shield
winners in the first leg of the 2015/2016
World Series circuit in Dubai, the Maple
Leafs were incredibly unlucky to finish third
in their pool in Cape Town. Losing only
once and beating the All Blacks Sevens,
they were points away from placing in the
cup quarter-finals.
Currently ranked 13th, there are plenty of
positives for the Canadians to build from as
Wellington draws closer.
The Portugal Sevens team are currently
ranked 16th in the Sevens World Series
standings with no wins to show after
completing the first two legs of the
2015/2016 World Series circuit.
It can only improve from here for the
Portugal lads who, placed in a tough pool
at the Wellington Sevens, will be aiming to
bring the Portuguese courage and speed
that they’re known for to take home their
first win of this year’s series.
“Wellington is pretty important
to us, we are working hard
behind the scenes to do well.”
Tim
Mikkelson
Tim Mikkelson, the All Blacks
Sevens captain, knows his side
may be down but they are not out
of this year’s HSBC World Series.
Wellington is a vital tournament for the side as it
attempts to regain its equilibrium after the worst
run of injuries Mikkelson has ever seen the side
suffer.
Mikkelson was a victim when suffering concussion in
Dubai and being forced to sit out the second leg. But
having recovered he has enjoyed being back in full
training and looking at the challenges ahead.
Being Olympic Games year, there was an extra
element for all teams to cope with and New Zealand
was no different.
“It’s exciting times and we have got some
experienced All Blacks and Super Rugby players
coming in who are keen to learn.”
“They are asking a lot of questions. It is exciting
helping out guys and getting them to know all the
moves and through Titch’s training sessions.
“Wellington is pretty important to us, we are
working hard behind the scenes to do well. I think
we’ve learnt some great lessons from those first
two tournaments that we can use going into the
Wellington and Sydney tournaments,” he said.
Mikkelson has not been surprised by the closing
up of standards. The United States won the last
tournament of last year’s series. It was now a case of
any team on its day being capable of winning.
What was important was being in contention until
the last minute of every game.
“It comes down to critical moments in the game and
that is why we are working so hard just trying to
make sure we get the little things right in our game,”
he said.
New Zealand at their best needed to be a physical
side in their ball carrying, their tackling, their setting
of rucks in attack and being hard on defence to
create attacking chances.
“There’s been a bit more in training and everyone
is putting their best foot forward. You can see Titch
is trying new stuff and the boys are excited to go to
training every day,” he said.
Golden-point extra time is played in knockout matches when a match is tied and
a result is required. The first team to score ANY points is declared the winner.
After a team scores points, THIS team restarts play at halfway with a drop-kick.
The team that conceded the points receives the kick.
There are two extra match officials – an in-goal judge helps the referee with
game decisions and kicks at goal. Game decisions can be tries, touchdowns,
touch-in-goal. Game decisions can be tries, touchdowns, touch-in-goal and
foul play. The in-goal judge can only assist with decisions in-goal.
A conversion kick MUST be a drop-kick. A conversion must be taken within
30 seconds of a try being scored. During a conversion attempt, all opposition
players must assemble close to their own 10m line (near halfway). Therefore,
there is no opportunity to ‘charge down’ a conversion.
A scrum has only 3 players from each team in it, formed In one line as a
front row.
Penalty kicks and free kicks cannot be place-kicked. If a kicker wants to
attempt a penalty goal, the kick must be taken within 30 seconds of the penalty
being awarded.
Each team can have a maximum of 5 reserve players. A team may make up to a
maximum of five substitutions /replacements during a match.
