Notes from our Chairman
Nodiadau gan y Cadeirydd
Wishing all our members a happy and prosperous 2016!
Before moving onto the new 2016 year, I would like to reflect a little on
the year passed. 2015 - what a great year for your business club with
notable events, great speakers and to cap it all the exhibition in
Cwmbran Stadium! This was well received with a great deal of positive
feedback and many exhibitors and visitors requesting that we repeat
the event again. And the Christmas event – with special guest speakers
Nigel Meek and Rick O’Shea - who can forget that one!
On top of that, Torfaen Business Voice membership has exceeded its
expectations so this coming year we need to match numbers and also
attract new companies.
The TBV Committee is endeavouring to investigate new opportunities
and events so we keep things invigorated. The first quarterly event for
2016 will be on the 10th March and this will feature facilitated
networking.
We’re always interested to know if you’ve gained business or forged
new business relationships or partnerships as a result of attending our
TBV events, so do let us know if this is the case for you.
By the time TBV members receive this newsletter they will have been
sent their invitation to renew. Please complete the online form and
continue your support for 2016 which is vital to the growth and
sustainability of your business club.
NEWS UPDATES: You will find some great news stories from our
members in this edition. If you have a story or just wish to give your
business a little more exposure, why not write in and let us know all
about your company and your aims for 2016.
Are you one of the 700,000 tax payers to be affected by
the dividend changes?
A ydych chi’n un o’r 700,000 sy’n talu treth, sy’n teimlo effaith y
newidiadau difidend?
Last year the budget brought with it unwelcome news for directors of private limited
companies who extract most of their income via dividends. The Government is abolishing
the dividend tax credit as we know it, and introducing a new dividend taxation system.
If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to sit up and take notice. From April 2016,
the current rules on grossing up your net dividend (the amount you receive) by 9/10 will
cease. This is a simplification, at last the dividend you receive is your dividend for tax
purposes. The first £5,000 of dividend income will be taxed at 0% for all taxpayers.
Dividends received in excess of this will be taxed at 7.5% for basic rate taxpayers, 32.5%
if you are at higher rate and 38.1% for those with incomes over £150,000.
Directors will need to re-evaluate the way profit is
extracted from their company. It would be prudent to speak to your
accountant as soon as possible to discuss how this may affect you so that, if needed, you
can take the necessary steps to ensure that your are extracting money in the most tax
efficient way.
One piece of good news is that the corporation tax rate will fall over the next few years, to
19% in 2018 and 18% in 2020; however, this will not counter the effects of the new
dividend taxation rates for those extracting regular dividends from owner-managed
In addition, anyone with significant investment portfolios who are in receipt of dividends in excess of £5,000 need to consider the implications.
One such consideration is whether they need to register for self-assessment from April 2016.
Investing in your most valuable business assets
Buddsoddi yn eich asedau busnes mwyaf gwerthfawr
Personal development is a strange thing. We all ‘do it’ by default, because everything we do or
see is part of the ever-developing spiral of ‘see-do-get’, where what we see and do influences our
results in life and in business. There is a difference, thought, between allowing this to just
‘happen’, and in seeking training in order to ensure that process happens.
Simon Sinek, entrepreneur, TED Talks speaker and author of bestselling business book ‘Start with
Why’ promotes greater personal development, team building and business success through
development of a better understanding of why you do what you do, so that you can do it better.
Coaching and personal development facilitation are ways of discovering your ‘why’, preparing for
a brighter future, and for making things happen. A coach is a person who sees things differently
and empowers you to do the same by asking the right questions. A facilitator doesn’t dictate
actions – a facilitator draws from you and your team what is already there, but which you didn’t
realise was available. We all have great potential – sometimes we need to be reminded of that,
and so do the people we rely on – our teams.
Personal development training is a business-investment that can have a powerful effect on both
business and personal success. If you already have an iPad, iPhone and a MacBook – you’ve paid
enough for the ‘tools of productivity’.
So invest personal development training. For you and your team.
Focus Workshop, in South Wales. Visit his website at http://threeresolutionsguy.com for details of how you can take
Steps to take when looking for a new commercial property
Camau i’w dilyn wrth edrych am eiddo masnachol newydd
Moving premises can be a daunting task for SMEs, so here are some
tips to consider when going through this process …
Know what you want: Consider what you really want from your workspace before you look
for a property and draw up a list in priority order.
• Negotiate rent terms:
Some landlords will compromise on rent to secure a new tenant, especially if the building is empty and the landlord is liable for business rates.
Take this opportunity to negotiate a reduced rent or request a rent-free period at the start of the lease which will ease cash flow and mitigate
your fit out costs.
• Value for money:
Be clear on what costs are included in your lease and payment dates. Try to avoid committing to repair works which could cost you. Likewise, if
the property is not in good condition when you move in, record its state in a schedule of condition so you are not liable for repairs when you
leave. Consider business rates when calculating costs, as you will have to pay them and they can be very expensive.
• Get a second opinion:
It’s worth instructing professionals e.g. a surveyor and a solicitor, to give you practical advice, highlight potential pitfalls - liability for expensive
repairs, exit terms and conditions - and help speed up the process.
• Check planning permission:
Confirm the premises has the right category of planning permission for your requirements.
The Velothon Wales returns to south Wales on Sunday 22 May and once again Torfaen will be welcoming this event.
Up to 18,000 cyclists will take part along a 140km closed road route, making this the UK’s second biggest sportive event.
Full details of the road closures are still to be confirmed, however, in Torfaen, it is expected that the highway from Blaenavon to Pontypool,
including a number of side roads, and the main routes into Caerphilly and Monmouthshire, will be fully closed for around 10 hours.
Businesses directly affected by the road closures will be contacted in the run up to the event. However, for any queries contact email
route@velothonwales.co.uk or call 02921 660 790.
In the run up to the Velothon it is expected that many cyclists will be travelling to the area, and staying in and around Torfaen, as they train for
the event. Kate Blewitt, Team Leader Economy & Heritage Tourism, Torfaen Economy & Enterprise says:
“If any business is looking to target cyclists with discounts or special offers, then please
email info@southwalesbusiness.co.uk and we can help publicise these with Velothon
progress, Get Hired HQ helps you get your next job faster. Not just any job, one that
connects your skills, experience and aspirations with an employer that values them.
Based in Cwmbran, Get Hired HQ offers its services across the UK. Managing Partner Ian
Edwards helps clients through a range of services offered individually or in combination:
• Career coaching
• Confidence building
• Stand out CVs, cover letters and LinkedIn profiles
• Identifying and connecting with unadvertised jobs
• Interview & negotiation skills
Taking Control of Job Search
Ian Edwards
The full service combines all of the above in a 3-month proactive programme, where Ian prepares, promotes and coaches a client to find their
next job faster. Clients learn how to take control of their own job search via the unadvertised job market instead of endlessly applying online
and then playing the waiting game for selection. Waiting costs time, money, loss of status and confidence.
Seminars & Workshops
For companies making redundancies, Get Hired HQ seminars and workshops provide group coaching on how to write CVs and cover letters that
get interviews (not documents that look the same as everybody else), job search strategies and interview skills.
Testimonials on www.GetHiredHQ.com best convey the results clients achieve. It’s not just their new challenge with a new company they
value, it’s their renewed confidence in their ability and that they secured their new role faster than expected. Requesting one of our Free Career
Let’s explore ways of “working local” – with Torfaen
Tourism Association
Dewch i ni archwilio ffyrdd o ‘weithio’n lleol’ – gyda Chymdeithas Twristiaeth Torfaen
You might not think that tourism is very important to this part of Wales – but it is and
in 2014 around £65.4 million of expenditure was generated in the area from visitors,
over 80% of whom were day visitors.
Torfaen is a really great area for things to do – everything from
internationally acclaimed Big Pit National Coal Museum and Blaenavon
Ironworks, to sporting facilities like Go Vertical at Cwmbran Stadium, our
golf courses, G Force Karting and water sports at Llandegfedd Reservoir.
Then there are great heritage attractions like Pontypool Museum and
Llanyrafon Manor, as well as Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre and Greenmeadow
Community Farm. More than enough for a weekend away (if you
don’t live in the area) and we’ve got some great accommodation from the
Parkway Hotel & Spa to The Lion Hotel in Blaenavon, to mention just a few.
The Torfaen Tourism Association is always looking for opportunities for our members to work together or with other local businesses.
So – do you need a meeting venue with a difference? Do you want to do some team building? How about putting a leaflet rack in your foyer
showing the great things to do locally – it will show your visitors how proud you are of where you are based?
The TTA is a voluntary group and a member of Torfaen Business Voice. We’d love to work with you. We attend the TBV meetings so come
over and have a chat (Kim Colebrook attends regularly on behalf of all the members) or get in touch via Facebook. You can also follow us
Maxine Gilmore, 34 from Cwmbran, Torfaen referred herself to the Melin Works team after seeing that they can provide training and work
“I felt I needed training and actual office experience to improve my
chances of getting a job”
said Maxine. Being a single mum with two young boys, Maxine has not worked for over 3 years since the birth of her youngest son.
Through the Melin Works Team Maxine got an 8 week work experience placement, which included
payroll services, administration and invoicing, with Glanmor developments in Cwmbran, one of
Melin’s contractors. “This was vital for me as I gained real world experience which I can put on my
CV. I can’t thank Paula and the team enough.”
Davina Bedford, Office Manager at Glanmor said; “Maxine was a pleasure to have on placement and
was eager to learn. Our office is a busy place so we have no time to carry anyone but Maxine got
stuck in and did all we asked of her and more.”
Melin Works paid for Maxine to attend courses, get access to a tablet through their digital inclusion
work and helped her with CV writing and job applications . Melin’s education bursary helped
towards her studies and childcare costs “Melin removed many of the barriers to getting more
TBV member Raspberry Catering established in 2011 is coming
up to its 5th birthday. Julie Nelson set up the outside catering
business, initially from her home, after being made redundant,
wanting to focus on a different career and is passionate about
seasonal and non-processed food.
Initially unsure if the corporate market and private customers
would pay a little more for quality homemade food, Julie has
seen the business grow steadily with catering services for the
corporate sector still the bread and butter. The business moved
premises two years ago to a new five star hygiene rating
catering unit.
Raspberry Catering, from a team of two people, now employs 9
staff and has expanded into two other areas: operating The
Raspberry Tea Room, popular with locals and tourists at the lovely
grounds of Llanyrafon Manor Rural Heritage Centre; and more
recently managing Llanyrafon Manor - the perfect setting for
events and functions including marriage ceremonies and family
