Strategic Evidence-Based
Interviewing in Occupational
Therapy
Presented by Renée R. Taylor, PhD
Communication with clients can be challenging.
This course describes structured
interviews, semi-structured interviews,
and general clinical interviewing. Using evidence-based examples
including interview-based assessments described in the occupational
therapy literature, this course provides a set of norms and
communication strategies that are likely to maximize success in
gathering accurate, relevant, and detailed information. Applying
principles from the Intentional Relationship Model, a case example
demonstrates how the selection of certain modes of communication
at critical times can improve outcomes, particularly with
difficult-to-interview clients.
Learning to collaborate with clients with
a focus on occupation demonstrates the value of occupational
therapy. In a variety of practice settings, time constraints, and productivity
requirements may create challenges to using a top-down
approach in evaluation and documentation. This course provides
practitioners with practical information to retain authentic occupational
therapy from observation, interview, chart review, and
proxy reports to complete the MOHOST. MOHOST is a comprehensive,
easy to administer occupation-focused assessment tool useful
with a wide range of clients at different functional levels. A PDF of
the required MOHOST text is included in the course.
Consider how to increase effective
occupation-based practice with the
SCOPE assessment tool. SCOPE provides a systematic method to
document a child’s motivation for occupations, habits, roles, skills,
and identify environmental supports and barriers. The SCOPE is
appropriate for children and youth ages birth to 21 in a range of
practice settings. A video case study illustrates SCOPE use, goal
writing and intervention planning. The required SCOPE manual is
included in the course.
