Early Childhood: Occupational
Therapy Services for Children
Birth to Five
Edited by Barbara E. Chandler, PhD, OTR/L,
FAOTA
Occupational therapy brings the perspective
of occupational engagement to early
childhood practice. Advances or deviations
in childhood development resonate
throughout the child’s body and experience.
How these changes are expressed,
experienced, and addressed from a family-centered focus has profound
implications for the child’s ability to engage in occupations
that are meaningful and valuable for their quality of life. Occupational
therapy brings the perspective of occupational engagement
to early childhood practice.
This book and Self-Paced Clinical Course provides an enlightening
journey through occupational therapy with children at the earliest
stage of their lives. It focuses on community-based programs,
looks at the impact of federal legislation on occupational therapy
practice, and explores ways to articulate and demonstrate the
expertise of occupational therapy in transitioning early childhood
development into occupational engagement in natural environments.
Occupational Therapy Practice
Guidelines for Early Childhood:
Birth Through 5 Years
By Gloria Frolek Clark, PhD, OTR/L, BCP,
FAOTA, and Karrie Kingsley, OTD, OTR/L
During early childhood, most children in
the United States achieve their developmental
milestones; however, about 1
of every 6 children will have a developmental
disability or disabling behavioral
problem before age 18. Less than half are
identified during early childhood.
This publication addresses occupational therapy practice for
children birth through age 5 years, including early intervention
and preschool practice. It defines the occupational therapy domain,
process, and intervention that occur within the boundaries of
acceptable practice. Topics include prematurity, ASDs, feeding
disorders, obesity, the NICU, and cerebral palsy, as well as motor
and praxis skills, sensory–perceptual skills, emotional regulation,
cognitive skills, and communication and social skills. Interventions
discussed include those promoting social–emotional development;
for feeding, eating, and swallowing; for improving cognitive
development; for promoting motor performance; and for service
delivery in early childhood. Appendices contain additional information
relating to early childhood practice, coding for intervention
and evaluations, funding sources affecting early childhood settings,
and methodologies used in the evidence-based literature review.
