Industry

Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA) is an organization
representing the major automakers in Korea. KAMA is established to foster
and develop Korean auto industry and thereby contribute to sustainable
growth of the national economy. KAMA concentrates its efforts in the
following areas:
1. Developing plans and measures for sustainable growth of the auto industry in Korea.
2. Expanding international trade and cooperation.
3. Promoting public relations activities for the interests of member companies.
4. Promoting joint R&D efforts and technical collaboration.
5. Organizing activities to promote auto-related culture.

Overview
Automobile production surpassed
4 million at home, 1 million abroad
Korean automobile industry, leading Korean
economic growth, posted the record of 4
million domestic production and 1 million
offshore production in 2007. There were some
negative factors in the global scope including
deteriorated international competitiveness
caused by strong won & weak yen and market
depression in the Western Europe and US as
well as domestic factors covering rising price of
oil and raw materials, contracted consumer
sentiment by sluggish domestic economy and
unstable employment. Nevertheless,
introduction of numerous new models,
elevated brand image thanks to improved
quality & performance and determined
expansion of overseas production along with
wider penetration into emerging markets
especially BRICs, worked together to set the
new record in production, export and offshore
production.
Korean Automobile Industry 2008
Vehicle production in 2007 increased by
6.4% to 4,086 thousand units, surpassing
4,000 thousand mark for the first time,
supported by recovering domestic sales and
expanding exports to the emerging markets.
Although lingering negative factors such as
economic slowdown, unstable employment,
growing maintenance cost by high oil price,
were not notably improved, domestic sales in
2007 reached to 1,219 thousand units with a
4.7% rise from a year earlier, riding on
increasing replacement demand by aging cars
and new model release effect.
In spite of unfavorable price competitiveness
affected by strong won & weak yen and
enlargement of overseas production, automobile
exports in 2007 hit a record of 2,847
thousand units, up 7.5% from 2006, which are
mostly attributable to improved quality and
brand image of Korean cars, consolidation of
sales networks and advantageous use of
global player networks, market diversification
to emerging markets, etc.

Total export value of vehicles including auto
parts reached U$49.7 billion, occupying 13.4%
of gross national export.
Prompted by import dealers’ active
marketing activities such as diversified model
release at low to mid-level price band, pricecutting
of imported cars owing to appreciation
of won, expanded outlets and A/S centers and
consolidated advertisement, vehicle imports in
2007 soared as much as 32.5% from the
former year registrating at 73,227 units.
In the meantime, as global competition is
getting tougher, Korean auto makers are
actively expanding its overseas plants. Mainly
driven by Hyundai and Kia, offshore production
posted 1,162 thousand units in 2007 in the
areas of US, China, India, Slovakia and
Turkey.

The Status of Korean Auto Industry
Auto industry ranked at the first place in employment, production and added-value
among manufacturing industries.

Auto industry leads the structural
advancement of the future industry. As
automobiles are getting more environmentfriendly,
high safety-concerned, intellectualizing,
the share of electronic components in
automobiles are expected to enlarge 20% to
40% by 2015. As the importance of telematics
industry, propelled by IT and communication
technologies, gets more prominent, auto
industry comes to lead cutting-edge
information industry such as wireless
communication, contents generation and
display industry.

Automobile is the biggest job-creating
industry and contributes to vitalizing provincial
economy. Auto-related employees, directly
(250 thousand persons) or indirectly (1,320
thousand persons), number 1,570 thousand
persons. It encourages regional economy to
progress, widely locating in metropolitan area
(Incheon and Gyeonggi province), southeastern
region (Ulsan, Busan, Changwon and
Daegu) and southwestern region (Gunsan,
Jeonju and Gwangju) in Korea. Automobile
can be represented as an integrated
machinery industry, assembled by about
20,000 parts and components.

Production
Hit a historic record of 4,086 thousand units
Automobile production in 2007 totaled 4,086
thousand units with a 6.4% year-on-year rise
due to increasing domestic sales and exports,
renewing the record for six consecutive years.
It outnumbered 3,000 thousand units in 2002
and in five years it surpassed 4,000 thousand
units. In the global ranking by production,
Korea ranked the 5th for three consecutive
years following Japan, US, China and
German.
Automobile production capacity in 2007
stood at 4.7 million units with a 87.3%
operation rate, up 4.4%p from the former year.
Equipment investment on auto industry in 2007
amounted 2,632 billion won, focusing primarily
on new product development and investments
on automation, environment and safety rather
than equipment expansion.
Regarding production by vehicle type,
passenger cars gained 6.7% at 3.7 million
units owing to consistent new model release
and ballooning overseas shipment, while
commercial vehicles recorded 3.4% more units
than 2006 to 363 thousand units led by upbeat
sales of trucks with revitalization of
construction industry.
By maker, Hyundai, the biggest maker,
produced 1,707 thousand units with a 5.5%
rise and Kia decreased 2.7% to 1,119
thousand units due to slight reduction of
exports. GM Daewoo had the highest growth
rate of 20.9% producing 943 thousand units
and Ssangyong and Renault Samsung also
rose by 4.9% and 10.1% respectively.

Domestic Sales
Set on a recovering pace mainly
by surge of mini cars
Despite increasing maintenance cost by oil
price hike, domestic sales in 2007 saw a
moderate recovery with a 4.7% rise totaling 1.2
million units, driven by increased replacement
demand by aging cars and new model release
effect by Hyundai’s i30, Kia’s New Lotze and
Renault Samsung’s QM5, on the ground of
4.2% steady growth of private consumption
and expenditure.
By vehicle type, passenger cars posted
relatively large growth of 5.4% with 986
thousand units, triggered by new model
release effect and increasing replacement
demand. Commercial vehicles remained at
233 thousand units with only a 1.9% increase
with a sluggish bus demand by small and
medium-sized enterprises in spite of a slight
growth of 1-ton trucks.
Within passenger car segments, mini, small
and medium-sized cars were on the increase
in sales whereas large-sized cars saw
declining pace. While mini-cars rose
remarkably by 38.0% led by beneficial
maintenance cost amid oil price hike along with
GM Daewoo’s active sales promotion, smallsized
cars also increased by 8.3% as high fuel
efficiency is appealing to get more
attractiveness on such models as Kia’s
Morning, Pride and Hyundai’s i30.

By maker, Hyundai and Ssangyong posted
relatively high performance. Hyundai, the
biggest producer, sold 625 thousand vehicles,
up 7.6% and increased its market share to
51.3%, which are attributable to buoyant sales
of Avante HD, NF Sonata and Grandeur TG
alongside new models introduction of i30 and
Grand Starex. Kia and GM Daewoo saw a

slight increase staying at its previous share.
Ssangyong climbed 8.1% fuelled by the debut
of RextonⅡ EURO and robust sales of Actyon
Sports and Kyron. In ‘Top 10 Best-selling Cars
in 2007’, Hyundai held five models(Sonata,
Avante HD, Grandeur TG, Santa Fe and
Tucson) and Kia had three models(Lotze, New
Sportage and New Carens).

Exports
Recorded a whopping growth in emerging
markets across Eastern Europe,
Latin America and Middle East
Despite some unfavorable conditions for
exports, i. e. weakening price competitiveness
due to declining foreign exchange rate of won,
expanding offshore production, improved price
competitiveness of Japanese competitors by
increasing production of small-sized cars and
weakening yen, exports in 2007 gained 7.5%
at 2,847 thousand units spurred by improved
quality and image of Korean vehicles,
diversification of export market and expansion
of sales networks.
Favorable settlement between labor and
management minimized the production
drawback in 2007 and utilization of the global
sales networks in GM and Nissan by GM
Daewoo and Renault Samsung respectively,
had a significant impact on export increase.
By region, the US(-3.6%) and Western
Europe(-20.2%) posted downward pace in
exports affected by overall stagnation in
demand and growing production in transplants,

whereas Eastern Europe(50.0%), Latin
America(44.3%), Middle East(21.1%) and
Africa(22.4%) got a whopping growth riding on
expanding demands boosted by economic
growth and Korean makers’active inroads to
the emerging markets. Therefore, in North
America and Western Europe, the share of
total exports declined to 29.3% and 19.3%
respectively.
By maker, Hyundai, the biggest maker,
exported 1,076 thousand units with a 4.3% rise
from a year ago. GM Daewoo posted 26.1%
more shipment than the previous year to 808
thousand units prompted by export-oriented
models(Lacetti, Gentra, Matiz and Winstorm)
via GM global sales-networks across Eastern
Europe, Latin America and Middle East.
Renault Samsung recorded the sharpest
growth rate of 33.0% exporting 54,971 units
mainly fuelled by increasing SM3 shipment to
Russia through Nissan sales-networks.

Imports
Surpassed a 5% share in Korean market
Steep growing pace of imported cars
continued in 2007. Automobile imports soared
32.5% to 73,227 units, renewing the historic
record, spurred by price-discounting strategy
benefited from declining won/dollar exchange
rate, launching of a wide range of new models
including mid to low-price cars and expanding
A/S centers, etc. In terms of imported car type,
passenger cars leaped 33.9% to 63,883 units,
special purpose vehicles increased 14.9% at
6,446 units, trucks gained 54.5% at 2,720,
while buses diminished by 11.9% to 178 units.
Imported car sales registered 53,390 units in
2007 with a 31.8% rise and its share grew to
5.1% in domestic car market. By nation of
origin, all of the countries saw upward pace
and particularly Japanese, US and French cars
posted a prominent growth. German cars
maintained its leading position in the import
market, climbing 17.4% to 22,282 units and
Japan ranked second with a 44.5% hike at
17,663 units. US stood at third recording 6,235
units, followed by UK(58.7% increase with
2,136 units) and France(81.3% increase with
2,712 units).

With respect to engine displacement, cars
less than 2,000cc soared by 37.2% to 12,931
units, 2,000 to 3,000cc cars gained 34.4% to
21,916 units and cars over 3,000cc increased
25.0% to 18,543 unit. To sum up, lower
engine-sized import cars enjoyed higher
growth in Korea.
In terms of sales-value meanwhile, the share
of imported cars rose to 14.6%. Especially, in
the car segment over 3,000cc, its share
occupied 34.9% and 53.8% based on salesunits
and value respectively, thus occupying
more than half of luxury car market.

Offshore Production
Posted a steep growth to 1.2 million units
Production in transplants has been
expanding, from Turkey and India in late 1990s
to China in 2002, US in 2005 and Slovakia in
2006. As a result, offshore production, less
than 100 thousand units in 2001, has seen
bullish growth every year and recorded 1.2
million units in 2007.
Regarding overseas production by maker,
Hyundai registered 911 thousand units and Kia
totaled 251 thousand units, accounting for
78.4% and 21.6% ratio respectively. On the
basis of production, the biggest one is
Hyundai’s India factory with 339 thousand
units, followed by Hyundai Alabama and
Beijing recording 251 and 232 thousand units
respectively.

In 2008, offshore production is projected to
reach 1.6 million units as Alabama plant in US
diversifies its production lines, China and India
plants increase its production capacity and
Slovakia plant starts full-scale operation.
Meanwhile, KD(Knock-Down kits) exports
leaped 18.4% to 1,263 thousand kits shipped
to China, Uzbekistan, Russia, Poland and
Ukraine. Remarkable growth of KD exports
can be explained by the fact that GM Daewoo
increased considerably the volume for
assembling via GM Group’s global plants.

Automobile Safety
Enhanced auto safety under
global harmonization
As 38%(about 2,400 persons) of total
deaths(6,327 persons in 2006) by car
accidents in Korea was caused by the collision
between vehicles and pedestrians, auto safety
standards for pedestrian protection is adopted
in 2008 in an effort to lessen the accident.
Thus, as the standard is stabilized after 2012,
the number of cars-related casualties are
expected to be considerably reduced, coupled
with various existing road safety measures
regarding road safety education and public
campaigns, road infrastructure, vehicle safety
and automotive insurance system.
In line with the measures of the government,
the automotive industry is introducing varied
new technologies covering ESC, ACC, AFLS
and etc. and adopting safety designs over
impact. As a result, a number of Korean cars
have been selected as the safest ones in
major vehicles safety tests in the US and EU.
KATRI, an organization under the Ministry of
Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, has
designed a total of 6 tests for vehicles. For
passenger cars, MPVs, and commercial
vehicles weighing 4.5 tons or less, safety
test(NCAP) is currently carried out on frontal
and side impact, brake performance, rollover,
head restraint and pedestrian safety(head).
From 2007 pedestrian safety test was added to
passenger cars and the test was expanded to
small trucks of less than 4.5 tons. As of 2008, 8
tests are to be implemented by adding two
more items of pedestrian safety(legs) and
dynamic assessment of car seat.
Meanwhile, in order to enhance the global
harmonization of safety standards, Korean
government and the automotive industry are
continuously participating in international
vehicle safety and regulation-related meetings
organized by UNECE WP29, APEC TPT
VSHG, JASIC G/I and etc. In particular, from
2003 Korea has been chairing the APEC TPT
VSHG and became the first country to adopt
GTR No.1(Door Locks and Door Retention
Components) into the Korean regulations.
Korean government together with car
manufacturers, endeavor to work towards the
goal of harmonizing 4�5 safety standards with
international standards every year. Until 2007,
four items have been harmonized with global
safety standards, which are Braking of
Passenger Cars(R13H), Front Fog Lamps
(R19), Rear Underrun Protective Devices
(R58) and Door Locks and Door Retention
Components(GTR No.1).

Environmental Requirements
Stricter emission regulations
implemented
Automobile manufacturers in Korea, in line
with Laws on Conservation of Atmospheric
Environment, are required to meet the
regulations of permissible level of vehicle
exhaust emissions according to the criteria
provided by Ministry of Environment.
In accordance with the above law, share of
gasoline passenger cars which meet
Californian LEV II-ULEV standard must reach
25% in 2006, 50% in 2007, 75% in 2008 and
100% in 2009, respectively. From January
2006, diesel passenger cars and small and
medium-sized diesel trucks had to comply with
EURO-4 emission standards while the same
applied to large diesel buses and trucks from
October 2006.
In an effort to improve the air quality in the
metropolitan area (Seoul, Incheon and
Gyeonggi-do), the government enacted in
2003 ‘A Special Law to Improve the Air
Korean Automobile Industry 2008
Quality of the Capital Area’, which came into
force in 2005.
Auto makers are required to produce and
sell low polluting vehicles as specified below
until 2010. Accordingly 34,000, 47,000 and
75,000 low polluting vehicles were sold in
2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively.

year. When the shipment is less than the rate, two times the quantity difference shall be added for the next year's shipment. If the automobile
manufacturer meets the standards voluntarily before Dec. 31, 2005, its shipment will be regarded as shipment of 2006.

Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s leading automaker, is growing into a truly global
company in terms of not only size, but quality and brand recognition. The company currently has an
annual production capacity of 3,390,000 units, of which about 1,790,000 units are manufactured at
Hyundai’s Ulsan, Asan and Jeonju factories in Korea. The other 1,600,000 units are made in
overseas factories, as part of Hyundai Motor Company’s global policy aimed at localization.
Employing over 75,000 people worldwide, Hyundai Motor is operating local comprehensive
production facilities inclusive of parts production in nations with strong market potential such as
India, China and Turkey. In each of these markets, the company has been posting positive growth
and sales. Hyundai Motor also has two more plants under construction in the Czech Republic and
Russia.
Hyundai Motor began construction of a 1.1 billion euro manufacturing plant in Nosovice, Czech
Republic in April 2007 with the aim of completion in March 2009. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing
Czech (HMMC), a fully-owned subsidiary of Seoul-based HMC, will have the capacity to build
300,000 vehicles annually. In the second phase, an additional 100,000 units per annum of capacity
will be added by 2011.
Furthermore, Hyundai Motor selected St. Petersburg as the site of its first manufacturing
operation in Russia. Construction will begin in the first half of 2008 and the plant will have an annual
capacity of 100,000 units.
Hyundai Motor has promoted complete localization of its activities from vehicle design to test and
evaluation by linking local R&D centersand test bases around the world, including the California
Design Center, the Hyundai American Technical Center Inc., the Mojave Proving Ground (U.S),
Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (Germany) and the Hyundai Motor Japan R&D Center
(Japan). As a result, the company is able to produce vehicles suited to the tastes and needs of local
customers and is thereby poised to expand its sales.
As a result of its global management system, Hyundai Motor was recognized as one of the
Global Top 100 brands for three consecutive years, achieving an official brand value of U$4.5
billion. Hyundai Motor is the first and only Korean automaker to achieve such recognition.
The company has been doing its best to improve overall product quality and this year, its efforts
were recognized. Two vehicles made by Hyundai Motor, the Elantra SE and the Santa Fe,made the
Consumer Reports’ Top Picks list for 2008, marking the first time a Korean automaker was included
in the list. The Elantra SE was named best small sedan, while the Santa Fe was named best
midsized sport utility vehicle. Consumer Reports is one of the most trusted sources for information
and advice on consumer products and services.
HMC, which has a 51 percent market share in Korea and over two dozen auto-related
subsidiaries and affiliates, sells its vehicles in 193 countries through some 6,000 dealerships and
showrooms.
Hyundai Motor stresses both quantitative growth and quality innovation, and through these
efforts, Hyundai will be able to increase production and sales, as well as raise its brand
competitiveness, quality, and research and development capabilities to the highest level.

Kia Motors Corporation(www.kiamotors.com) was founded in 1944 and is Korea’s oldest
manufacturer of motor vehicles. In1999, it has become a member of the Hyundai-Kia
Automotive Group.
Kia today has 40,000 employees around the world and annual revenues of almost
US$17 billion. More than 1.4 million vehicles are sold annually and serviced through a
network of distributors and dealers covering 165 countries.
In March 2005 Kia reached the milestone of exporting 5 million vehicles.
Kia has three production centers in Korea - Hwasung, which boasts annual production
of 390,000 units; Sohari, which manufactures 240,000 units a year; and Kwangju, which
produces 350,000 vehicles annually.
Kia is constantly upgrading and expanding its overseas production facilities.
The Slovakia plant (KMS: Kia Motors Slovakia), which is Kia’s first manufacturing facility
in Europe, started to produce from the end of 2006.
In 2007, Kia opened its second production plant in China and its first-ever North
American factory is currently being built in Geogia, USA.
Kia is the major sponsor of the Australian Tennis Open and an official worldwide
sponsor of the Davis Cup. Also it is an official automotive partner of FIFA - the governing
body of the FIFA World Cup - as well as a EUROTOP partner of UEFA. Kia Motors
Corporation’s brand slogan - “The Power to Surprise” - represents the company’s global
commitment to surpassing customer expectations through continuous automotive
innovation.

GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GM Daewoo) was established on October 17, 2002.
With headquarters in Incheon, Korea, it manufactures a family of vehicles and powertrains
for the Korean and global market. GM Daewoo employs about 16,000 people worldwide in
its core automotive business.
GM Daewoo operates five manufacturing facilities in the Korean cities of Gunsan,
Changwon and Incheon, and a powertrain plant that builds transmissions in Boryung. It
also hasan assembly facility in Hanoi, Vietnam, called GM Daewoo Vietnam Auto &
Technology (VIDAMCO). In addition, GM Daewoo provides market and brand-specific
vehicle kits for assembly at GM facilities in China, Thailand, India, Colombia and
Venezuela.
The GM Daewoo Design Center and GM Daewoo Technical Center in Bupyung are
developing the next generation of GM Daewoo products. The Center for Manufacturing is
overseeing research in production technology. GM Daewoo is the home of GM’s global
small and mini-car architectural development teams, which are developing the next
generation of products for the GM Group.
GM Daewoo’s product lineup includes the Matiz, Gentra, Gentra X, Lacetti, Tosca
passenger cars and Winstorm SUV, Damas and Labo mini commercial vehicles as well as
gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions.
GM Daewoo produces vehicles and kits for Chevrolet, Buick, Opel, Vauxhall, Pontiac,
Holden and Suzuki that are offered in more than 150 markets on six continents.
In 2007, GM Daewoo sold in Korea and exported more than 1,880,000 vehicles.

SsangYong Motor started manufacturing buses in 1954, becoming the first to do so in
the domestic automobile industry, which was no different from a barren land in terms of
automobiles. Since then, the company has been making efforts to create the world’s
leading automobiles, including the Rexton II and the Chairman W, which offer the world’s
top-notch performance, quality, reputation, and class.
SsangYong Motor developed the Korando Family in 1988, and the Musso (standard
SUV), Korando (SUV for youths), and the Chairman (leading top-class large passenger
vehicle) in the 1990s. Based on such experience, the company developed the Rexton
(premium SUV), Musso SUT (Korea’s first sports pick-up), Kyron and Actyon (small- to
mid-sized SUV), Rexton II (environmental-friendly vehicle), and Chairman W (Korea’s
flagship sedan) in the 2000s. SsangYong Motor has always been performing a pioneering
role in the history of automobiles.
SsangYong Motor is also enjoying a leadership position in the domestic diesel engine
field. The company succeeded in the independent development of the XDi270 XVT
(2,700cc) and XDi200 XVT (2,000cc) engines, which are third-generation common rail
Direct Injection diesel engines, which are outstanding in all aspects - output, performance,
quality, durability, and environmental-friendliness. By so doing, the company showcased its
cutting-edge technologies at home and abroad once again.
SsangYong Motor became a member of SAIC Motor Co., Ltd., the largest automobile
group in China, in 2005. In March 2007, the company announced its mid- to long-term
development strategy, which is to achieve a sales volume of morethan 6 trillion won by
selling 330 thousand units of vehicles a year and building a full line-up by 2011. Since then,
SsangYong Motor has been taking one step at a time to advance into the world stage,
such as the commencement of construction for a new plant in October 2007.
Moving forward, SsangYong Motor will strengthen cooperation with SAIC Motor in
various areas, such as research and development, global sourcing, and the sharing of
overseas networks, to provide high-quality products and services. By so doing, the

Overview of Seoul Motor Show 2009
“Beautiful Technology, Wonderful Design”
We, Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association, cordially
invite you to the Seoul Motor Show, the world’s most
extravagant and dynamic motor show.
Seoul Motor Show 2009, the 7th biennial Show, will be held from
April 2, 2009 for 11 days at KINTEX(Korea International Exhibition
Center), since its first opening in 1995.
KINTEX provides the largest exhibition space throughout all of
the North-east Asian area, 200 prominent companies from 15
countries around the glove are participating in this Show.
The Seoul Motor Show 2009 will act as an informative medium
for the consumers providing all types of automobiles-related
information, which include quality, price, design, and performance,
through the glimpse of an eye.
Also, it will be able to act as an intermediary for collecting
information on the overall trend of the global automobile market as
well as valuable information of the latest technologies.
We will do our best to make sure that the Seoul Motor Show
