In 1966 across the Atlantic, a great rivalry was unfolding between
two giants of the pop music world: The Beatles and The Beach
Boys. The fierce competition between the groups gave rise to a
pair of the most acclaimed albums of all time – The Beach Boys'
Pet Sounds and The Beatles' Revolver. To commemorate 50 years
since the creation of these classic albums, WAAPA composers
have responded with a series of new works exploring their
enduring legacy.
ALEXANDRE DA COSTA
PLAYS BRUCH
Superstar violinist Alexandre Da Costa, WAAPA’s brilliant new Head of Strings,
brings Max Bruch’s beloved Violin Concerto to life in three extraordinary and inspiring
concerts of orchestral masterworks. Peter Moore conducts the Faith Court Orchestra
in Dvorák’s dramatic, passionate and enormously popular New World Symphony,
and introduces Arturo Márquez’ electrifying Danzon No. 2 – a thrilling celebration
of Latin music and energy.
The Ambient Guitar explores the mesmeric world of musical
minimalism through the compelling sounds of the acoustic
guitar. The program includes Steve Reich’s Acoustic Counterpoint
(for 16 guitars), the seductive Cuban landscapes of Leo Brouwer,
the ambient pop textures of Californian David Pritchard, and
the energetic and imaginative soundscapes of Australians
Robert Davidson and Nigel Westlake.
