“SIMPLY THE BEST” CROWNED AT FLTA AWARDS
AUDIENCE CHOOSES “CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS” TO MARK ASSOCIATION’S 40TH YEAR
Double winners Combilift led an
impressive field of champions, as the
Fork Lift Truck Association presented
its 18th annual Awards for Excellence on
Saturday 18th February.
The sold-out audience roared in approval
as the innovative Irish manufacturer collected
the coveted “Victor Ludorum” award;
a unique, gold-plated “Archie” statuette created
to mark the Association’s 40th year.
The hallmarked trophy, presented for
the pioneering 2008 Combi-CB multidirectional
truck, marked Combilift’s second
success of the night at the Olympic-themed
ceremony, co-presented by athletics legend
Sally Gunnell OBE. Earlier, its Combi-RT
has scooped the Award for Innovation.
Other big winners on the night
included Linde’s 394 displacement
pump (Environment), Ravas M-Forks
(Safety) and JCB’s Changezee teletruk
carriage (Ergonomics); each receiving a
solid bronze statuette following an open
vote through the FLTA website.
Meanwhile, individual Awards were presented
to Daniel McKinnon of Global
Materials Handling Ltd (Apprentice of the
Year), Clive Mansfield of EnerSys
(Employee of the Year), and Jim Cameron of
FB Chain (Services to Industry) - designer of
the famous FB chain wear gauge.
McCain Foods was named “Safe Site”
for its extensive use of Virtual Risk
Manager to assess operators and focus
A new builders’ and decorators’ trade
counter has now been opened in High
Wycombe by one of the region’s leading
independent suppliers in the sector and
makes extensive use of the products and
expertise from specialist display and
storage system supplier, Polypal.
Housed in a purpose-designed building,
the facility is a key element of a new site,
which represents the latest stage of an
ongoing development plan being undertaken
by Grant & Stone. The move is
providing the company with more than four
times the space of the previous corresponding
facility in the town and operates in
conjunction with three other outlets in High
Wycombe, which focus on plumbing, bathroom
fittings and electrical supplies. This
specialist supplier now operates some 14
outlets in the Home Counties region.
Polypal’s involvement in the new trade
counter installation in High Wycombe
includes both wall and low level gondolas,
pallet racking, a mezzanine safety gate and
innovative pigeon hole racking that is
designed to hold large stocks of lengthy
material within a minimum footprint.
Elsewhere on the site, which has seen Grant
& Stone convert a number of existing buildings
as part of the relocation project,
Polypal racking - including A-frame, pallet
racking and cantilever racking - is located at
key positions to house a range of materials
from timber boards to plastic pipe-work.
“Through our involvement with the
National Buying Group, we were aware of
Polypal’s involvement in this sector and
were able to speak to a number of organisations
who already gain from the company’s
expertise and systems,” comments Darren
House, Grant & Stone Marketing and
Design Manager.
“This, linked to the company’s extensive
knowledge, design capability and, of
course, price competitiveness, made the
decision to appoint Polypal for a large element
of the storage and display installations
clear cut,” he adds.
“The full trade counter fit-out took just
four days, with a similar time-frame
required for Polypal’s involvement in other
areas of the yard,” Darren continues. “As a
result, we believe we now have a larger,
more efficient and extremely versatile
facility - to the benefit of both our trade and
DIY customers in the area.”
John Drake, Business Development
Manager at Polypal, highlights key aspects
of the company’s involvement in the development
of the trade counter building
project - “Part of our advice, for example,
was to take full advantage of the threemetre
height of the trade counter area so
that displays and stocking to 2.1 metres
could be achieved - originally a suspended
ceiling was being considered, which clearly
would have reduced the available height,”
he says.
training, and WB Powersource was
crowned Supplier of the Year.
Since 1995, the Awards has served as a
“Pick of the Year” for materials handling
products and services, rewarding those
who strive to raise standards throughout
the fork lift truck industry.
Sally Gunnell was aided in this year’s
presentations by Association chairman
Martyn Fletcher, as well as representatives
from sponsors B&B Attachments, BNP
Paribas, Doosan Industrial Vehicle, Hitachi
Capital, Interfit, Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks,
Powercell and Yale Materials Handling.
The show had been opened in dramatic
fashion with a white-knuckle display from
stunt cyclist Joe Oakley. After dinner Tina
Turner tribute “Kinisha” heralded the winners
with “Simply The Best” before a live
“Additionally, we were able to use our
standard racking systems to create a bespoke
design to provide the pigeon hole facility,
which has optimised the storage of lengthy
materials without unnecessary impact on the
available floor area.” John Drake also points
out that the storage and display installations
throughout are designed to be readily reconfigured,
if required.
“Grant & Stone is widely recognised as a
major supplier throughout the Home Counties
and is acknowledged for the service, products
and knowledge that the company is able
to provide to its customers,” adds John Youle,
Sales and Marketing Director of Polypal.
“We are delighted to have been brought
in to work with the organisation on this
important new development, and are confident
that the resulting facility will meet the
company’s stringent targets in terms of efficiency,
flexibility and quality,” he concludes.
band led dancing until the small hours.
“Awards 2012 has been another
resounding success,” said FLTA
chairman Martyn Fletcher.
“This event continues to celebrate all
that is good in the materials handling
industry and, for more than 18 years, we
have encouraged and acknowledged the
progress that has been made.
“While Combilift grabbed the headlines
this evening, each of our ‘Pick of the Year’
champions and finalists represents a significant
advance in ensuring materials are
moved more safely, more efficiently and
with less impact on the environment.”
EFG 425-430
Jungheinrich’s new electric counterbalanced
truck - the EFG Series 4 -
has a load capacity of up to 3.00
tonnes. The new model is available
with a choice of chassis lengths -
including a short chassis version that
reduces the truck’s turning circle.
Like other electric-powered trucks
in the Jungheinrich range of materials
handling equipment, the EFG 425-430
models feature fourth generation AC
technology.
Highly environmentally friendly,
Jungheinrich’s latest AC technology
gives trucks an exceptional efficiency
ratio and constantly low energy consumption.
In fact, tests have shown
that the new EFG Series 4 trucks are
10 per cent more energy efficienct
than the models they replace.
The low energy costs are further
reduced through energy reclamation
during braking, so that a battery
change in most applications over two
shifts is no longer necessary.
Fourth generation technology also
offers productivity benefits as it enables
trucks to accelerate far more quickly
than less advanced systems - enabling
more loads to be moved per shift.
When it comes to battery changing,
a new device allows the battery to be
removed easily, quickly and safely.
The SnapFit adaptor is a mechanism
fitted to a standard pallet truck that
locks in to the underside of a 48 or 80
Volt battery effortlessly. The self
guided SnapFit battery changing
NEW ENGINE AND ELECTRIC POWERED COUNTERBALANCED MODELS
5
device reduces the time it
takes to secure and remove
a battery when it is due for
recharging considerably.
For the truck operator,
the new EFG Series 4 features
a number of design
ideas that allow the operator
to adjust his working position
to maximize comfort.
The truck’s slim steering
column, intuitive seat and
seat mounted armrest also
improve the operator’s
sense of well
being and therefore
stay fatigue free over
the course of a shift.
The cab itself is
spacious with an
open and uncluttered floor area and,
when it comes to forward visibility,
the EFG Series 4’s mast is 50mm
wider than the model it replaces
while the truck’s overhead safety
guard offers a virtually completely
unobstructed view.
A number of safety features have
also been introduced to the new Series
4 as standard. For example, the trucks
all feature Jungheinrich’s Curve
Control which automatically reduces
the truck’s drive speed as it enters a
corner by monitoring the truck’s speed,
wheel position and steering angle.
At the heart of the Curve Control
system is a continuously working
sensing unit that monitors the truck’s
steering angle. Simply stated, the
system quickly and effectively
reduces the drive speed when an
excessive steering angle is sensed.
Jungheinrich claim that trucks
fitted with Curve Control offer
market leading stability
Craig Johnson comments: “When a
customer invests in a Jungheinrich
truck they expect to get a top quality
product. Our new Series 4 truck offers
quality and performance from a truck
designed to meet the requirements of
clients operating in a broad range of
industry sectors.”
