KNAPP UK Ltd Mr Craig Rollason, Head of Sales & Marketing Tel: 01844 202149 The national Commercial Boat Operators Association has been working with The Insurance Partnership and specialist shipping law firm Myton Law, both based in Hull, to develop a dedicated insurance scheme and standard conditions of carriage for its members. The UK’s waterways carried 41.4m tonnes in 2009 (latest DfT statistics), including tonnages by ship to inland ports. Manchester’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change has said that moving freight by water is more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly per tonne per mile, with barges producing only 25 per cent of the carbon gases that lorries do. The CBOA reports that fuel accounts for about 20 per cent of barge operating costs, compared with 40 per cent for lorries (according to the Freight Transport Association). The CBOA represents the UK’s major inland waterways operators, including narrow boat, barge, and small sea going vessel owners. Its members are active in the four main rivers/estuaries of the Thames, Humber, Mersey and Severn. The CBOA has nearly 100 members, including associates. Work undertaken for the CBOA by The Insurance Partnership and Myton Law is aimed at ensuring members’ insurance provision and conditions of carriage are up to date and fit for purpose as the industry targets further business growth from companies considering freight carriage on our waterways in order to meet environmental goals. The sold-out audience roared in approval as the innovative Irish manufacturer collected the coveted “Victor Ludorum” award; a unique, gold-plated “Archie” statuette created to mark the Association’s 40th year. The hallmarked trophy, presented for the pioneering 2008 Combi-CB multidirectional truck, marked Combilift’s second success of the night at the Olympic-themed ceremony, co-presented by athletics legend Sally Gunnell OBE. Earlier, its Combi-RT has scooped the Award for Innovation. Other big winners on the night included Linde’s 394 displacement pump (Environment), Ravas M-Forks (Safety) and JCB’s Changezee teletruk carriage (Ergonomics); each receiving a solid bronze statuette following an open vote through the FLTA website. Meanwhile, individual Awards were presented to Daniel McKinnon of Global Materials Handling Ltd (Apprentice of the Year), Clive Mansfield of EnerSys (Employee of the Year), and Jim Cameron of FB Chain (Services to Industry) - designer of the famous FB chain wear gauge. Housed in a purpose-designed building, the facility is a key element of a new site, which represents the latest stage of an ongoing development plan being undertaken by Grant & Stone. The move is providing the company with more than four times the space of the previous corresponding facility in the town and operates in conjunction with three other outlets in High Wycombe, which focus on plumbing, bathroom fittings and electrical supplies. This specialist supplier now operates some 14 outlets in the Home Counties region. Polypal’s involvement in the new trade counter installation in High Wycombe includes both wall and low level gondolas, pallet racking, a mezzanine safety gate and innovative pigeon hole racking that is designed to hold large stocks of lengthy material within a minimum footprint. Elsewhere on the site, which has seen Grant & Stone convert a number of existing buildings as part of the relocation project, Polypal racking - including A-frame, pallet racking and cantilever racking - is located at key positions to house a range of materials from timber boards to plastic pipe-work. “Through our involvement with the National Buying Group, we were aware of Polypal’s involvement in this sector and were able to speak to a number of organisations who already gain from the company’s expertise and systems,” comments Darren House, Grant & Stone Marketing and Design Manager. “This, linked to the company’s extensive knowledge, design capability and, of course, price competitiveness, made the decision to appoint Polypal for a large element of the storage and display installations clear cut,” he adds. “The full trade counter fit-out took just four days, with a similar time-frame required for Polypal’s involvement in other areas of the yard,” Darren continues. “As a result, we believe we now have a larger, more efficient and extremely versatile facility - to the benefit of both our trade and DIY customers in the area.” John Drake, Business Development Manager at Polypal, highlights key aspects of the company’s involvement in the development of the trade counter building project - “Part of our advice, for example, was to take full advantage of the threemetre height of the trade counter area so that displays and stocking to 2.1 metres could be achieved - originally a suspended ceiling was being considered, which clearly would have reduced the available height,” he says. training, and WB Powersource was crowned Supplier of the Year. The new model is available with a choice of chassis lengths - including a short chassis version that reduces the truck’s turning circle. Like other electric-powered trucks in the Jungheinrich range of materials handling equipment, the EFG 425-430 models feature fourth generation AC technology. Highly environmentally friendly, Jungheinrich’s latest AC technology gives trucks an exceptional efficiency ratio and constantly low energy consumption. In fact, tests have shown that the new EFG Series 4 trucks are 10 per cent more energy efficienct than the models they replace. The low energy costs are further reduced through energy reclamation during braking, so that a battery change in most applications over two shifts is no longer necessary. For the truck operator, the new EFG Series 4 features a number of design ideas that allow the operator to adjust his working position to maximize comfort.
