NEWS REVIEWLEADING EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CLUBSREMAIN RESILIENT IN THE RECESSIONAs the global economy starts to show signs of recovery, top European footballclubs have again demonstrated their ability to withstand the tough marketconditions by achieving strong attendances at the start of the 2009/10 footballseason, according to research from the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.Average attendance at the first tworounds of matches in the 2009/10UEFA Champions League was37,400 - 5% higher than the previous season.In 2008/09 the Premier League recordedcapacity utilisation of over 90% for the 16thconsecutive season and this run will beextended once again, if the 91% utilisation formatches up to the end of September 2009continues.Dan Jones, Partner in the Sports BusinessGroup at Deloitte, commented: “When theeconomic downturn hit, we expressed cautiousoptimism for football clubs that the strong andloyal supporter base and the security of longterm broadcast and commercial deals wouldprovide some degree of buffer against theworst effects of recession. Clubs were acutelyaware that the real effects would start to be feltin the 2009/10 season, and the strongattendances achieved at the start of the seasonwill provide a welcome degree of comfort.”This season, in response to the challengesposed by the market, over 75% of PremierLeague clubs introduced season ticket pricefreezes or reductions. Early indications ofattendances holding strong are an affirmationof this being a positive strategic decision.Blackburn Rovers and Manchester City bothachieved increases in attendance of over 10%,for the first 6 weeks of the 2009/10 season.Arsenal recently released strong financialresults for the 2008/09 season, which showedthe club generated over £100m from matchdayrevenue. This is in line with ManchesterUnited’s record matchday revenue in 2007/08and represents an increase of 6% on theprevious season, mainly as a result of Arsenal’sprogress to the Champions League and FACup semi-finals.For the leading clubs, UEFA ChampionsLeague participation continues to be a keydriver of total revenue. All four English clubs(Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and ManchesterUnited) achieved full capacity attendances intheir first home match of the 2009/10competition. However, the main differentiatorcomes from UEFA’s central distributions, withthe teams likely to receive anything from€25m-€50m from the enhanced central UEFApool for their performance in the competitionin 2009/10.Aside from gate revenues, it is a challengefor clubs to secure new commercial deals at atime when businesses are facing toughdecisions, particularly around discretionaryadvertising and marketing spend. Nonetheless,a number of new deals have been struck sincethe UK entered recession in January 2009.Some of football’s leading clubs have scoredsome stunning successes. Liverpool’s deal withStandard Chartered more than doubled theirprevious shirt sponsorship value to catch upwith arch rivals Manchester United. Unitedincreased their own shirtfront value as theyswitched insurers from AIG to AON.Dan Jones added: “We are seeing a flight toquality whereby the largest clubs perform wellbut for smaller clubs the challenges are greater.This fear of polarisation is eased by thedistribution mechanism of Premier Leaguebroadcast monies. This money, and its provenresistance to recession, helps to level theplaying field across the Premier League clubs.”In February 2009, the Premier Leagueannounced a c.4% increase in the value of itsdomestic broadcast rights, for the three yearperiod through to 2012/13. At BSkyB,subscription numbers and revenues per userare up suggesting that ‘intertainment’ inchallenging times is a boost to performance.The demand for live rights was highlightedwhen, within 48 hours of Setanta’s demise, thePremier League secured an alternative dealwith ESPN - reportedly for a comparablevalue. In addition, the new overseas rightsvalues, which are shared evenly across the 20clubs, are likely to provide even moredownturn defying growth before 2009 is over.Dan Jones concluded: “Leading footballclubs and leagues outpaced the rest of theeconomy in the good times and now seem tobe faring better than most in a challengingeconomic environment. NEWS REVIEWMOBILE BARRIERSCROWD CONTROL EXACTLY WHERE IT’S NEEDEDOldbury UK’s mobile scene and incidentmanagement barrier offers operational flexibilityfor venue crowd control and public safety.Recent years have seen step changesin public safety and securityregulation - particularly at publicvenues - and concurrently, there has beenincreasing recognition of the evolving natureof threat. Onerous obligations now rest onclubs and venues relating to their duty of careand the provision of crowd safety andprotection. Compliance with theserequirements - not to ignore the associatedcosts - now poses a major challenge for thesports and events industry.The boards and senior management of venues– from the smaller clubs right through to themajor national and international arenas, now facethe difficult task of balancing best practice crowdsafety and control with an appropriate andproportionate level of risk management… and allwithin budgets which are increasingly underpressure. Specifically in the UK, where there is acurrent preoccupation with the build-up to 2012 -with all the added security implications whichare incumbent upon an Olympic host - the issuesare front of mind in every boardroom.Earlier this year, a UK West Midlands-basedspecialist trailer and mobile solutionsengineering company, Oldbury UK, rolled out afully mobile crowd management barrier package.It is poised to become an important addition tothe equipment inventory used to support thesafe and effective management, control andprotection of big crowds of spectators or largeevent audiences. For the older venues, theinstallation of upgrades or additional crowdcontrol and security equipment can be a costlyand disruptive operation. But even where fixedbarriers and fences are installed, there can still bea requirement for the additional flexibilityoffered by the mobile barrier solution, especiallyat specialist events. The nature and content ofevents themselves can vary as well, particularlywhen it comes to marshalling and processinghigh volumes of people in a comparatively shortspace of time. Of course, the whole characteristicand crowd dynamics at any event can changeagain, suddenly and dramatically, in the event ofan emergency or major incident - and the abilityto rapidly deploy additional protection anywhereon site could be critical.Oldbury’s experience in these specialistsectors includes the design and build of mobilescene and incident management and crowdcontrol barriers for both civil and militaryagencies. More recently, Oldbury introduced acomposite material up-armoured version of thebarrier, designed to withstand specified smallarms fire and blast levels.Richard Skan, Oldbury UK ManagingDirector says, “Our mobile scene and incidentmanagement barrier was designed anddeveloped originally to fulfil a very specifichomeland security and civil contingency role -where mobility and rapid deployment arecritical. Talking to the events and sports industryhowever, has revealed that venues face many ofthe same operational challenges. Even themood can vary or change between euphoricexcitement and enthusiasm - and frustration,anger and despair. In most instances, the role ofhuman interface with the crowd falls to thepolice - or venue security officers - whose ownresources may well be under increasing pressure.This pattern is unlikely to change - and anotherfactor is the current escalation of the direct costsof providing required levels of event cover andprotection. It is a subject which now occupies theboardrooms of many, if not all, major clubs.The Oldbury mobile barrier is a modulardesign, which offers considerable flexibility toconfigure, specify or tailor the unit to suitspecial applications or individual venuerequirements. NEWS REVIEWBURNLEY FC TEAM UP WITHA HARMAN PRO SOLUTIONAMS Acoustics design and ETA Sound install a newdigitally networked PA/VA system at Turf Moor Stadium.With their welcome promotion toFootball’s elite Premier League,Burnley FC have treatedsupporters at their 22,000-capacity Turf Moorstadium to a fully integrated digital networkpublic address system that is highlyintelligibleand PA/VA compliant.Having spent 33 years outside the topechelons it was perhaps fitting that TheClarets’ first clash would be with reigningchampions Manchester United. Part of theclient’s brief was to effect a 12th man homeadvantage… and the PA received a rousingreception and a famous victory was recorded.Acoustic consultants AMS Acoustics, hadalready implemented an earlier first phaseupgrade last season to bring three stands intoVA compliance. During the course of thisexercise the capture of a full range ofmeasurements was required and the resultantdata, after analysis, was used as the cornerstonefor an entirely new design the following year.During the short closed season AMS returnedwith ETA Sound to implant a complete HarmanPro solution, using a fibre-based signal networkthat would extend to the three main stands - theNorth (James Hargreaves) stand, the East (JimmyMcIlroy) stand and South (Bob Lord) stand.The West (David Fishwick) stand is underreview with the expectation that it will bereplaced; this will in effect form part of a Phase3 system enhancement (along with the back-ofhouseareas) for which cabling has alreadybeen implemented.Tasked with supplying a voice alarmcompliantsystem, with high STI (SpeechTransmission Index) AMS Acoustics’ projectdesigner Helen Goddard made her productselection with care. For she sensed that thevoice evacuation system could double up tomeet on-pitch entertainment requirements.Reverberation (RT) and audiocommunication times within the stadium(along with certain modelling data of thestands), had already been plotted by AMSAcoustics, who believed that having workedsuccessfully with the JBL AE loudspeakers inthe past, they would again meet the remit.The company needed to achieve peak levelin an emergency scenario, related to crowdnoise. “We knew the system would have toachieve a maximum of 102-105dB(A) and thismeant we needed to use loudspeakers thatwould be able to achieve these kind of levelswithout going into compression.”First the JBL loudspeakers were set anumber of challenges - including aperformance evaluation in AMS Acoustics’anechoic chamber, even to the point of adestruction test. This was supported by SoundTechnology, the Harman Pro distributors, whoprovided all the necessary back-up.The acousticians then set about designingthe control, signal path and zoning matrix,opting for an integrated Harman Pro packagebased on system optimisation and costefficiency.“As the budget was quite tight thiswas the logical way to go,” stated Goddard.Crown CTs amplifiers, fitted PIP-USP3speaker processing units, BSS Audio SoundwebLondon DSP devices, with BLU-link, runningon a fibre backbone - and independent HPProCurve network switches across all racklocations - form the system architecture. In thisfully-redundant design, UPS systems provideall the power conditioning and mains supportin the event of a power failure.The installation was also notable for theadvanced DSP programming skills of IDNetworks’ Martin Barbour, using the attributesof Harman Pro’s new London Architect v2.06and System Architect v2.00 software - the latterbeing its first use anywhere in the world.“Given that this was a fast fit job it saved mehuge amounts of time,” he said.LOUDSPEAKERS AND COVERAGEIt was the task of Eddie Thomas’s ETA Soundto convert the CATT-Acoustic stadium model,created by AMS Acoustics’ Lorenzo Morales,into reality. To achieve this, he assembled thesame design team that had been used sosuccessfully on the O2 Arena build project.He also worked closely with Tom Williams,Sound Technology’s acoustician. In fact the latterhad been closely involved from the outset of theproject - taking part in the initial conceptdiscussions with AMS Acoustics, supporting theequipment testing and measurementprocedures, setting up the load monitoring - andfinally assisting with system commissioning.In total 16 x AM6315/95 (90° x 50°) fullrange loudspeakers with rotatable horn and 12x AM6200/95 mid-high have been used.In the South Stand AM6315’s have beendeployed, mounted horizontally to counteractsightline restrictions, with the horn rotated.<strong>Cover</strong>ing the East stand are three clusters, eachwith AM6315/95 in the vertical plane andAM6200/64 covering the lower raked seating(90°x 50°).In the North stand there are five similarclusters of the same, with the AM6315/95mounted at the top in the vertical plane, andAM6200/64 bolted under to cover the lowerrake. An additional four AM6200/64s(60°x40°) are also suspended on the northstand, specifically to provide pitch coverage.Eddie Thomas reports that the speciallycommissionedmechanical bracketry had muchto do with the evenness of coverage. “Workingwith the supply company and the structuralengineer we devised a method for hanging 100kg weights off the roof supports and gettingthe speakers to where we wanted them.”This was no easy feat - since the roof wasinverted the contractors had to cut through thecladding to get to the supporting beams. Likewise, when the new standcomes up for development the sound systemcan also break into the existing fibre ring.Helen Goddard is full of praise for ETASound’s achievements. “They have done anamazing job,” she acknowledges. The community has benefited asthere has been a reduction in antisocial behaviour of49% in the Seaburn area and 26% in Chester-le-Street. In Chester-le-Street a former derelict shop haseven been turned into a state of the art Kickzbranded learning centre for young people toenhance their employment opportunities and seekhealthy lifestyle advice.Kickz Outstanding Police Contribution Awardfor London: Safer neighbourhood police staff are avery positive force behind schemes and thenominations for this category ranged from PCSO’swho have attended sessions on a regular basis andbuilt excellent relationships with participants, tosenior officers who have driven the developmentof projects behind the scenes, securing substantialamounts of funding to keep projects going. After being asked to ‘take early studyleave’ by his school as he seemed to have ‘given up’,George turned his life around through Kickz,achieving the FA Level 1 coaching badge, NVQLevel 2 course in Activity Leadership andvolunteering 12 hours a week throughout thesummer to help on Millwall’s Disability Programme.He has gone onto become a very promising sportscoach and role model to other young people.Kickz was born out of discussions betweenthe Metropolitan Police and Premier Leaguewho, along with the Football Foundation, are theprimary national partners. The Association ofChief Police Officers (ACPO) are also involvedin order to represent the interests of otherconstabularies around the country. 17 otherforces are involved in the programme nationally.Other partners who have made significantcontributions to the development of the Kickzprogramme in funding and/or expertise in theirrespective specialist areas, include theDepartment for Culture Media and Sport(DCMS), v (The national youth volunteering alsocharity), the Brit Trust , the Home Office, The FAand the Football League Trust. STADIUM DEVELOPMENT NEWSChelsea v Manchester United Barclays Premier League - Minute’s silence at Stamford Bridge for Remembrance Day.UK-INSPIRED EUROPEAN STANDARD WILL IMPROVE MATCHEXPERIENCE FOR DISABLED FOOTBALL FANS ACROSS EUROPEThe Football Foundation welcomed new guidelines on catering forsupporters with disabilities at football stadia that has just beenpublished by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).The UK has been the driving force insuccessfully getting a Europeanstandard on provision forspectators with disabilities in football stadiaadopted through organisations like theFootball Licencing Authority (FLA), theNational Association of Disabled Supporters(NADS), the Football Foundation and theFoundation’s sister organisation, the FootballStadia Improvement Fund (FSIF).In May 2002 the FSIF and FLA eachprovided £25,000 to fund research, which ledto the publication of a document calledAccessible Stadia. These comprehensivedisability-friendly guidelines then went on tobe referred to as the appropriate standard forstadia under Part M of the BuildingRegulations.Jim Froggatt, who had worked on theBritish standardisation with the FSIF and otherinterested organisations, then introduced it tothe CEN Committee on which he representedthe BSI.Steve Shipperley, Head of TechnicalServices at the Football Foundation, said: “Theinitial idea for Accessible Stadia was bornfrom a simple but recurring complaint fromsupporters in wheelchairs that they werenever able to see key moments of action suchas goals and penalties because, as theexcitement mounted, everyone in front ofthem stood up.“The concept of a ‘super-riser’, or large step,in front of all wheelchair positions was seen asthe solution, but the problem was how tocommunicate it to stadia designers, owners,managers, etc.“The ensuing need for guidance evolvedconsiderably into a comprehensive documentcovering all disabilities including ambulantdisabled and people with sensory disabilities,and not just from an infrastructure perspectivebut the management of their specialist facilitiesand the need for all grounds to have an accessaudit.“I am delighted that the influence ofAccessible Stadia has spread beyond ourshores.”British Standards expert Jim Froggatt said:“I believe it reflects great credit on the UKFootball Authorities for being the first withinEurope to help achieve pan-Europeanguidance on this issue.“It will hopefully help disabled supportersall over Europe to enjoy a better and justexperience of the game. There are a number oforganisations that deserve credit.The FSIF’s funding and support for theAccessible Stadia document, as well as the FLAfor allowing me the opportunities to pursuethis vital work when I was part of the FLA. In creating the fully-certified S708,Nullifire has not merely opened fresh possibilities forspecifiers, but mandated a new approach to specifying.For the first time, a water-basedalternative to solvent productsallows them to fire-protect exposedstructural steel without threatening theenvironment or compromising health andsafety. The development of Nullifire S708means that it is no longer reasonable tospecify a solvent-based intumescent coatingfor such applications.Specifiers, understanding intumescentcoatings, know that solvent-based productsare not perfect. The lack of a saferalternative to solvents has meant that healthand safety and environmental issues havealways been unavoidable when protectingexposed steel.Solvent-based coatings emit ‘volatileorganic compounds’ (VOCs) duringapplication and ‘trapped solvent’ for weeksafterwards while drying. Inhalation or skincontact with VOCs is harmful and subject tovery low occupational exposure limits: inenclosed areas, VOCs represent a serioushazard. They also threaten the environment,reacting to create ground-level ozone andphotochemical smogs, and are implicated inozone layer damage. Strict worldwide limitson VOCs in paints are regularly tightened. Inany application, alternative non-solventproducts pose less risk to the environment, thepublic and contractors themselves. NullifireS708 is such a product.Industry leader Nullifire has led in waterbasedproducts since successfully creatingS607 for internal steel, in 1994. Subsequently,S707 offered up to 120 minutes of waterbasedprotection. S708 now joins thesewidely used products, as the first fullytested,water-based intumescent coating forexternal steel. The result of lengthy R&D, itrepresents the eco-friendly alternative. Thecomparison is stark: a solvent productcontains more than 200 grams of VOC perlitre, while S708 has less than 20 grams perlitre. Importantly, this is achieved withoutimpacting functional efficiency.S708 may be specified for steel which isfully exposed during a building’sconstruction. It withstands the elements,maintaining performance, for up to sixmonths without needing a protective topcoat. S708 may also be used without a topcoaton permanently ‘semi-exposed’ steel,meaning steel in areas with uncontrolledtemperature and humidity, such as car parks.A topcoat is also unnecessary in buildingsclassified C1 (schools and airports, forexample) or C2 (such as exhibition halls andvehicle depots). As with solvent products, itwill not resist total immersion, so precautionsare needed to avoid pooling water on flatsurfaces.S708 is available with 30-minute and 60-minute ratings for application on-site or off-sitevia airless spray, short pile roller or brush. Itusually requires only a single coating, meaningfaster application, using less product, thanmany solvent equivalents.Main contractors increasingly imposetough health and safety restrictions onsolvent-based products used on constructionsites. These include having dedicated, fireratedstorage facilities and restricting theamount of product at each spraying location.There are also high disposal costs. Bycontrast, S708 has no special on-site storageor handling requirements, has a low wastecost and offers easier clean-down ofapplication equipment. In addition, it curesto a smooth, hard finish unlike solventproducts, which tend to remain soft andvulnerable to damage.S708 is fully tested and approved to allrelevant standards, including EN 13823 (SBI)and IMO smoke/toxicity; BS 467:Parts 6/7,Class O and BS 476:Part 20/21:1987, in linewith British Coatings Federation guidelines.It has even successfully completed durabilitytesting in accordance with ETAG018 Part 22006, not yet mandatory in the UK, againstpending requirements for internal, semiexposedand external environments. Fullycompatible with other Nullifire coatings, S708is suitable for universal beams and columnsand cellular beams. S708, offering the benefitsof solvent-based products without theirdisadvantages, is the first eco-friendlyintumescent coating for exposed steel andrequires a new and responsible approachfrom specifiers. After the Games, the venuewill be owned, funded operated by the LeeValley Regional Park Authority as a sportingand leisure facility for canoeing and whitewaterrafting, as well as a major competitionand training venue for elite events.Construction work started on the Broxbournevenue in July and land formation works to formthe canoe course embankments and thelandscaped features of the venue are over halfwaycomplete. Piling work is now underway to formthe foundations of the Olympic starting pool andthe venue’s facility building. The club has hithertobeen playing at various sites, schools andsports clubs within the local area and the clubhas never had a ‘home base’. As Nicky Moore, Head Groundsmanat the University of Brighton confirmed: “It’sbeen an excellent day; the show is great for ageneral update on equipment, technologies andtechniques for effective groundsmanship.”The wide range of products on display andavailable for demonstration throughout theshowground not only emphasised every aspectof open space management but with groundsprofessionals increasingly embracing widerroles, the myriad of exhibits also met thegrowing trend towards multi-tasking. IOGSALTEX clearly provided a one-stop informationand product shop to meet every need.Hundreds of new products were launchedamong the thousands of tools, techniques andtips available for groundsmen andgreenkeepers through to play officers,architects, designers and surveyors as well aslocal authority and outdoor leisure facilitymanagers. Growing conditions wereideal and after five weeks we had total cover,which is phenomenal.”Ian is also impressed with the mixture’sdisease tolerance - in particular, Romance’stolerance to Leaf Spot. “Our old pitch andother playing surfaces in the area are proneto Leaf Spot, so we were expecting the newpitch to be affected. But it’s got excellentdisease resistance and we’ve had noproblems whatsoever. Carrington,meanwhile, is benefiting from a newReelmaster 3100-D mower, which is busycutting the 60,000sq m site - including threenewly constructed training pitches - twice ormore a day.The Blues have enjoyed an unprecedentedlevel of investment since new owner SheikhMansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan bought theclub in a £200million deal last summer.Grounds manager Roy Rigby says that theseare “very exciting times”.“I’ve been using Toro machines for over 18years now,” he comments. “They’re veryreliable and never let me down. I’m fortunate to have beengiven a free rein with my budget and sobought these new machines to improve thestadium pitch and Carrington ground.”Because the stadium pitch is six metresbeneath ground level, Roy says it’s prone tocompaction from concerts staged at the venuein previous years. Because it’s so quick,we can go out with it mornings or eveningsto, say, aerate the turf after heavy rain - wecouldn’t do that before as it was too timeconsumingwith other machines and alsomeant putting a heavy tractor on the surface.Compaction has already been reduced. PITCH MANAGEMENTHEAD GROUNDSMANWITH VIRTUALLY NO RENOVATION WINDOW ADDS GRASS SEED TO FULL SCOTTS PROGRAMMEWhen you manage winter games pitches for thesporting elite, grounds managers are thankful for thesummer renovations window which enables them tocarry out vital remedial work to tired and worn surfaces.ut what if this renovation windowwas reduced to just 15 days?BThat’s just what Noel Connolly, HeadGroundsman at Terryland Park in Galway,Ireland, has to contend with each and everyyear.The demands placed on the playing surfaceat Terryland Park are unrelenting. Home toFootball Association of Ireland (FAI) PremierDivision side Galway United and from thisseason also hosting first division side MervueUnited, it is used throughout the year, hostingLeague of Ireland fixtures in the summer everyweek and junior football games in the winter.During March and April the ground can hostup to 25 local finals at underage up to seniorlevel, as well as pre-season friendly League ofIreland games. In total, more than 100 matchesa year are played there.With no opportunity to carry out intensiverenovations, pitch maintenance has to bethorough and consistent. For the past decade,Noel has operated a programme of soiltreatments using Scotts fertilizers with limitedapplications of React herbicide. ColmanWarde, Scotts Country Manager for Ireland,works closely with him. Each year, theyconduct a soil analysis before drawing up thecorrect nutrition programme for the pitches forthe coming season. Years of researchat Scotts’ research centres led to thedevelopment of trait-specific grasses whichhave been subjected to intense trials and havemet or surpassed rigid standards formeasuring tolerance or resistance. At Sudburyit was used for setting out everything from theposition of the drains and floodlights throughto the rugby posts themselves.”Once the earthworks were complete, J Pugh-Lewis laser graded before trenching in thefloodlight cabling and installing a comprehensivedrainage system of pipe drains and sand slits. Thecompany then cultivated the two new pitches andameliorated them with sand, prior to seeding inAugust 2008. The club wanted to leave thepitches to grow-in for at least 12 months, whichgave J Pugh-Lewis time to complete theirextended contract. Acoustic Barrier fencing wasinstalled along the boundary between Sudbury’snew ground and the Persimmon housingdevelopment and post and rail fencing erected onthe southern boundary and around the first teampitch. HOSPITALITYJOB HOPES RISEAMONG HOSPITALITY AND LEISURE FIRMSIt is already the worst recession on record and the hospitality andleisure industry has not been immune from the worst effects ofthe economic slowdown with businesses across the UK suffering.The industry is inevitablyparticularly vulnerable to costcuttingby cash-strapped consumersas they have to choose what they can afford.When an industry relies on discretionaryspending it has to be aware that consumershave the discretion to not spend their moneywith them. Companies have responded withdiscounts and special offers in order toensure that consumers can afford to keepspending but inevitably, when the economycontracts and consumer confidence is low, thehospitality and leisure industry will suffer.Industry analysts acknowledge that theleisure and hospitality sector is traditionally oneof the last to suffer from an economic slowdownbut also one of the last to emerge from recessionas consumer confidence tends to recover slowly.Statistics from accountants BDO StoyHayward on business failures bear this out - in2008 failures in the hospitality and leisureaccounted for around 5.6% of the total and thisyear are expected to make up 7% of the total inthe UK. Next year that proportion is set to riseto 9%, according to BDO Stoy Hayward.So far so gloomy but, of course the optimistswill say the future is bright. The £114 billion-ayearleisure and hospitality sector is a keytarget for growth, particularly with a decade ofmajor sporting events planned for the UK - the2012 Olympic Games, the 2014 CommonwealthGames, the 2015 Rugby World Cup and,possibly, the football World Cup in 2018. TheGovernment talks about a golden decade forsport in the UK and the hospitality and leisureindustry will be a major beneficiary from theseworld class events. In addition the Governmentwants to create 200,000 more jobs in the sectorby 2017, 69,000 of them managers. Of course2017 seems like a long way off when you arebattling with the effects of the recession today.That is the future but what about thepresent? Are there signs that the hospitalityand leisure industry is starting to emerge fromthe current recession?New research from Santander CorporateBanking shows that UK hospitality and leisurefirms plan to create jobs in the coming months,bucking the job-cutting trend across the UK,which has led forecasters to predict threemillion out of work by the end of the year.The bank’s study shows that one in four(24%) companies in the sector plan to increasethe number of people they employ beforeFive most confidentbusiness sectors1 Hospitality & Leisure2 Energy3 Wholesale4 Health & Medical5 AgricultureChristmas. This compares with just five per centwhich are planning to shed jobs - a positivebalance of 19 per cent - with 65 per centexpecting to maintain current staffing levels.That is encouraging particularly when youconsider that UK unemployment currentlystands at a 14-year high of 2.47 million,according to the ONS, and forecasters predictthat this will increase to a total of three millionpeople out of work by the end of 2009.The planned jobs boost would confirm signsof increasing optimism among UK hospitality& leisure SMEs, as recorded by Santander’sCorporate Banking Business Confidence Index,which shows that nine out of ten businessowners (89%) in the sector are confident in theprospects of their own business during theremainder of 2009.Around one in four (24%) firms claim to be‘very confident’ and 65 per cent say they are‘confident’. Only 11 per cent say they are ‘notvery confident’. Indeed, companies in thissector expressed the highest degree of optimismfor their prospects for the remainder of 2009 ofany sector covered by the study. Across allindustries, an average of 75% of companies saidthey were confident in their prospects.Confidence levels for companies in theindustry are driven primarily by turnover andprofitability. Turnover is the factor mostresponsible for driving confidence levels in thesector, with over one in four (29%) hospitality& leisure company owners citing this as themost important indicator for them. Turnover isfollowed by profitability (26%) and consumerspending (16%) as the most crucial indicators.It is therefore significant that hospitality andleisure companies claim to have been less affectedby falling profits in the first half of 2009 than inother industries. Across all sectors, twice as manybusinesses say that they have experienced fallingprofits than those which have enjoyed increasedprofit levels (46% against 23%). In the hospitalityBusiness sectorand leisure industry, however, this experience isreversed, with 36% seeing a rise in profits whileonly 25% have seen a decrease.Around one in ten (11%) hospitality and leisurefirms have seen their profits rise by between 10%and 20% in the six months to June 30th while thesame number have recorded a rise of more than20%. Around three per cent have seen their profitsdecrease by more than 20% while 14% recordeddrops of between 10% and 20%.It is clear that SMEs have proved remarkablyresilient throughout the recession despiteconsiderable difficulty. Santander CorporateBanking research indicates that the hospitalityand leisure sector recorded strong profits in thefirst six months of this year. It is encouraging tosee that this has driven optimism andconfidence in the sector and that companies areintending to translate this into job creation.Commenting on the research, StevePateman, Head of Santander CorporateBanking, said: “Unemployment is traditionallya lagging indicator and is expected to keeprising even when the recession is officiallyover. It would appear that smaller businesses -and particularly those with a turnover of lessthan £5 million are emerging from recessionslightly quicker than larger rivals.“It is vital that the banking sector plays itspart and helps businesses to turn job plans intoreality. The downturn has taught banks that theyneed to build stronger relationships with theircustomers in order to provide solutions that willhelp their stability and growth.
