Jungheinrich have announced the
launch of new additions to their ranges of
ic-engine and electric-powered counterbalanced
trucks.
Both the electric and engine trucks have
been designed to offer the highest standards
of energy efficiency, throughput performance
and operator comfort.
VFG Series 5s
The ic-engine model - the VFG Series 5s - is
available in both diesel and LP Gas options.
The trucks are powered by a
Volkswagen engine and have a capacity of
up to 5.00 tonnes.
Like other trucks in the Jungheinrich
range of ic-engine counterbalance forklifts,
the VFG Series 5s features hydrostatic
drive technology.
Compared with the traditional ‘torque
converter’ type of transmission system
used in counterbalanced trucks, hydrostatic
drive technology has fewer mechanical
components and, as a result, requires
less routine maintenance. The technology is
also easy to work on.
The hydrostatic drive technology ensures
low exhaust emissions. The Jungheinrich
VFG Series 5s’s emissions are the lowest in
their class and well below the limit required
by the new EU IIIB legislation that is due to
come into effect from 2013 and will see the
legal limit for exhaust soot particles
reduced by 95 per cent.
Noise and vibration levels are also minimal.
When it comes to fuel efficiency, independent
tests have demonstrated that
hydrostatic trucks consume 2 litres of
diesel or 2kg of gas less per hour than
torque converter driven alternative.
The VFG Series 5s offers high levels of
productivity. The engine speed automatically
increases during the lifting process
and all mast functions, truck acceleration
To further enhance handling performance
and to maximize energy saving, five
different operating programmes allow
the driver to set the truck’s performance
characteristics to match the load and the
operating environment.
“We believe that with its combination of
low energy consumption and operating
costs and ultra low exhaust emissions, the
VFG Series 5s sets a new benchmark in icengine
counterbalance truck design,” says
Craig Johnson, marketing manager of
Jungheinrich UK Ltd.
He adds: “Not only is the truck the
cleanest in its class, the hydrostatic
technology requires between 20 and 30
per cent less fuel compared to
the market average. This means less
environmental impact and higher
productivity.”
HAPPY ST DAVID’S DAY - SPRING’S ON THE WAY
THE COMMENT FROM WAREHOUSE & LOGISTICS NEWS
Welcome to the 1st March Warehouse &
Logistics News. We’ve had our fill of belowzero
temperatures and snow for one winter,
thank you: step outside the warehouse and you’ll notice the
evenings drawing out and the bulbs coming up. As March
begins we’d like to wish all our Welsh readers a happy St
David’s Day, and celebrate with you and the rest of the
United Kingdom the cheery thought that there are now officially
just 20 days to go until spring starts.
Our scheduled features in this issue are Pallet Focus,
Warehouse Lighting and Warehouse IT. In our Pallet Focus
we take a look at the world of pallets, including wood and
plastic pallets, pallet suppliers, pallet pools, pallet management,
pallet inverters and all other associated products. In
Warehouse Lighting we shine a light on smart lighting solutions
for today’s warehouses including LED,
energy-efficient, long-life and sensor-activated systems.
Ian Law appointed Customer
Services Manager.
Douglas Gillespie Plant, Scotland’s
premier Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks
dealer, has expanded its management
team with the addition of industry
specialist, Ian Law.
In his new role as customer services
manager, Ian will support the forklift
supplier’s existing employees in delivering
the region’s highest standards of
customer service and support.
Ian brings with him more than 35
years of materials handling experience.
His career includes a wide range
of roles: from designing forklift trucks
for a leading international manufacturer
to selling them in Britain and
abroad.
Ian’s most recent role - working in
the UK across a wide range of industries,
in specialist applications and
MHE management - has given him an
in-depth understanding of fork lift
trucks... and their users.
He says: “Throughout my career, I
have worked with customers of every
shape, size and industry with one goal
in mind: to help them get the best
And in Warehouse I.T. we bring you the latest input on
RFID, barcodes, readers, scanners, labels and handheld
technology.
One conspicuous development on the Warehouse IT
front is the new generation of hand held devices that are
now available, robust enough to stand the knocks and
bruises of warehouse life yet offering much the same ease
of use, connectivity and functionality as top of the range
mobiles.
Anyone reviewing their Warehouse Lighting arrangements
needs to take into consideration the effect of recent
improvements in warehouse efficiency, specifically high density
and high level racking and faster materials handling.
High racking in warehouses can reduce lighting levels by up
to 50%. So any re-lay of a warehouse needs to be accompanied
by a rethink of the lighting. With today’s heightened
emphasis on safety and preventing accidents the bottom line
value from their own operations by
optimising their materials handling
equipment, maintenance and related
support processes.”
“Over the years I’ve taken a particular
interest in challenging existing
practices and working to implement
techniques and products which
improve a customer’s operations.”
“Performance is everything in high
capacity operations, such as port and
dock work, whisky handling and
freight operations. Our customers
need products and a dealer that they
can rely upon - every hour of every
day. That’s why I am delighted to be
working with Douglas Gillespie Plant.
“We offer a unique combination of
products from an approved range of
international manufacturers, properly
trained and equipped field engineers,
with a proven reputation for reliability,
and an organisation that consistently
delivers the highest quality of customer
care.”
Director Gordon Barclay is particularly
impressed by Ian’s in-depth
understanding of customer needs.
Gordon says: “Ian’s unrivalled ability
in generating the best deal for each
and every customer, combined with
his technical background makes him a
massive asset for Douglas Gillespie
Plant.”
INDUSTRY NEWS
is that forklift truck drivers need
decent light to drive in, and as
people get older their eyes deteriorate
and they need more light to see.
Pallets have acquired a degree of
glamour since Palletline’s Hilary Devey
joined the Dragons on Dragons Den last
year, and it was the highlight of WLN’s
yuletide viewing when Hilary was on
Graham Norton’s Christmas Show. When
‘Hills’ explained what she did, her fellow
guest, the McFly drummer and ‘Strictly’ champion Harry
Judd thought she was talking about the palates we taste
with. Maybe Harry should read our Pallet Focus, before his
band’s record sales dry up and he needs a job…
KNAPP UK Ltd has hired a further
two technical apprentices for its
Haynes, 19 - are working as part of
KNAPP’s resident engineering team at
the national distribution centre of
British Gas in Leicester.
Commented Ebb Kretschmer, Head of
Customer Service for KNAPP UK,
“Following the success of our first two
apprentices - who were employed at the
facility of our client, shoe supplier Clarks -
we decided to initiate a further two
for resident service teams with five
major clients in the UK, we need to ensure
that we have sufficient skilled engineers
The national Commercial Boat
Operators Association has been
working with The Insurance
Partnership and specialist shipping
law firm Myton Law, both based in
Hull, to develop a dedicated insurance
scheme and standard conditions
of carriage for its members.
The UK’s waterways carried 41.4m
tonnes in 2009 (latest DfT statistics),
including tonnages by ship to inland
ports. Manchester’s Tyndall Centre for
Climate Change has said that moving
freight by water is more fuel efficient
and environmentally friendly per
tonne per mile, with barges producing
only 25 per cent of the carbon gases
that lorries do. The CBOA reports that
fuel accounts for about 20 per cent of
barge operating costs, compared with
40 per cent for lorries (according to
the Freight Transport Association).
The CBOA represents the UK’s major
inland waterways operators, including
narrow boat, barge, and small sea going
vessel owners. Its members are active in
the four main rivers/estuaries of the
Thames, Humber, Mersey and Severn.
The CBOA has nearly 100 members,
including associates.
Work undertaken for the CBOA by
The Insurance Partnership and Myton
Law is aimed at ensuring members’
insurance provision and conditions of
carriage are up to date and fit for purpose
as the industry targets further
business growth from companies considering
freight carriage on our
waterways in order to meet environmental
goals.
Peter Hugman, chairman of the
CBOA, said, “We are confident this
comprehensive approach to insurance
and management of contractual obligations
will provide greater clarity and
peace of mind for both our members
and their customers. The Insurance
Partnership’s expertise in insurance
“SIMPLY THE BEST” CROWNED AT FLTA AWARDS
AUDIENCE CHOOSES “CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS” TO MARK ASSOCIATION’S 40TH YEAR
Double winners Combilift led an
impressive field of champions, as the
Fork Lift Truck Association presented
its 18th annual Awards for Excellence on
Saturday 18th February.
The sold-out audience roared in approval
as the innovative Irish manufacturer collected
the coveted “Victor Ludorum” award;
a unique, gold-plated “Archie” statuette created
to mark the Association’s 40th year.
The hallmarked trophy, presented for
the pioneering 2008 Combi-CB multidirectional
truck, marked Combilift’s second
success of the night at the Olympic-themed
ceremony, co-presented by athletics legend
Sally Gunnell OBE. Earlier, its Combi-RT
has scooped the Award for Innovation.
Other big winners on the night
included Linde’s 394 displacement
pump (Environment), Ravas M-Forks
(Safety) and JCB’s Changezee teletruk
carriage (Ergonomics); each receiving a
solid bronze statuette following an open
vote through the FLTA website.
Meanwhile, individual Awards were presented
to Daniel McKinnon of Global
Materials Handling Ltd (Apprentice of the
Year), Clive Mansfield of EnerSys
(Employee of the Year), and Jim Cameron of
FB Chain (Services to Industry) - designer of
the famous FB chain wear gauge.
McCain Foods was named “Safe Site”
A new builders’ and decorators’ trade
counter has now been opened in High
Wycombe by one of the region’s leading
independent suppliers in the sector and
makes extensive use of the products and
expertise from specialist display and
storage system supplier, Polypal.
Housed in a purpose-designed building,
the facility is a key element of a new site,
which represents the latest stage of an
ongoing development plan being undertaken
by Grant & Stone. The move is
providing the company with more than four
times the space of the previous corresponding
facility in the town and operates in
conjunction with three other outlets in High
Wycombe, which focus on plumbing, bathroom
fittings and electrical supplies. This
specialist supplier now operates some 14
outlets in the Home Counties region.
Polypal’s involvement in the new trade
counter installation in High Wycombe
includes both wall and low level gondolas,
pallet racking, a mezzanine safety gate and
innovative pigeon hole racking that is
designed to hold large stocks of lengthy
material within a minimum footprint.
Elsewhere on the site, which has seen Grant
& Stone convert a number of existing buildings
as part of the relocation project,
Polypal racking - including A-frame, pallet
racking and cantilever racking - is located at
key positions to house a range of materials
from timber boards to plastic pipe-work.
“Through our involvement with the
National Buying Group, we were aware of
Polypal’s involvement in this sector and
were able to speak to a number of organisations
who already gain from the company’s
expertise and systems,” comments Darren
House, Grant & Stone Marketing and
Design Manager.
“This, linked to the company’s extensive
knowledge, design capability and, of
course, price competitiveness, made the
decision to appoint Polypal for a large element
of the storage and display installations
clear cut,” he adds.
“The full trade counter fit-out took just
four days, with a similar time-frame
required for Polypal’s involvement in other
areas of the yard,” Darren continues. “As a
result, we believe we now have a larger,
more efficient and extremely versatile
facility - to the benefit of both our trade and
DIY customers in the area.”
John Drake, Business Development
Manager at Polypal, highlights key aspects
of the company’s involvement in the development
of the trade counter building
project - “Part of our advice, for example,
was to take full advantage of the threemetre
height of the trade counter area so
that displays and stocking to 2.1 metres
could be achieved - originally a suspended
ceiling was being considered, which clearly
would have reduced the available height,”
he says.
training, and WB Powersource was
crowned Supplier of the Year.
Since 1995, the Awards has served as a
“Pick of the Year” for materials handling
products and services, rewarding those
who strive to raise standards throughout
the fork lift truck industry.
Sally Gunnell was aided in this year’s
presentations by Association chairman
Martyn Fletcher, as well as representatives
from sponsors B&B Attachments, BNP
Paribas, Doosan Industrial Vehicle, Hitachi
Capital, Interfit, Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks,
Powercell and Yale Materials Handling.
The show had been opened in dramatic
fashion with a white-knuckle display from
stunt cyclist Joe Oakley. After dinner Tina
Turner tribute “Kinisha” heralded the winners
with “Simply The Best” before a live
“Additionally, we were able to use our
standard racking systems to create a bespoke
design to provide the pigeon hole facility,
which has optimised the storage of lengthy
materials without unnecessary impact on the
available floor area.” John Drake also points
out that the storage and display installations
throughout are designed to be readily reconfigured,
if required.
“Grant & Stone is widely recognised as a
major supplier throughout the Home Counties
and is acknowledged for the service, products
and knowledge that the company is able
to provide to its customers,” adds John Youle,
Sales and Marketing Director of Polypal.
“We are delighted to have been brought
in to work with the organisation on this
important new development, and are confident
that the resulting facility will meet the
company’s stringent targets in terms of efficiency,
flexibility and quality,” he concludes.
band led dancing until the small hours.
“Awards 2012 has been another
resounding success,” said FLTA
chairman Martyn Fletcher.
“This event continues to celebrate all
that is good in the materials handling
industry and, for more than 18 years, we
have encouraged and acknowledged the
progress that has been made.
“While Combilift grabbed the headlines
this evening, each of our ‘Pick of the Year’
champions and finalists represents a significant
advance in ensuring materials are
moved more safely, more efficiently and
with less impact on the environment.”
EFG 425-430
Jungheinrich’s new electric counterbalanced
truck - the EFG Series 4 -
has a load capacity of up to 3.00
tonnes. The new model is available
with a choice of chassis lengths -
including a short chassis version that
reduces the truck’s turning circle.
Like other electric-powered trucks
in the Jungheinrich range of materials
handling equipment, the EFG 425-430
models feature fourth generation AC
technology.
Highly environmentally friendly,
Jungheinrich’s latest AC technology
gives trucks an exceptional efficiency
ratio and constantly low energy consumption.
In fact, tests have shown
that the new EFG Series 4 trucks are
10 per cent more energy efficienct
than the models they replace.
The low energy costs are further
reduced through energy reclamation
during braking, so that a battery
change in most applications over two
shifts is no longer necessary.
Fourth generation technology also
offers productivity benefits as it enables
trucks to accelerate far more quickly
than less advanced systems - enabling
more loads to be moved per shift.
When it comes to battery changing,
a new device allows the battery to be
removed easily, quickly and safely.
The SnapFit adaptor is a mechanism
fitted to a standard pallet truck that
locks in to the underside of a 48 or 80
Volt battery effortlessly. The self
guided SnapFit battery changing
device reduces the time it
takes to secure and remove
a battery when it is due for
recharging considerably.
For the truck operator,
the new EFG Series 4 features
a number of design
ideas that allow the operator
to adjust his working position
to maximize comfort.
The truck’s slim steering
column, intuitive seat and
seat mounted armrest also
improve the operator’s
sense of well
being and therefore
stay fatigue free over
the course of a shift.
The cab itself is
spacious with an
open and uncluttered floor area and,
when it comes to forward visibility,
the EFG Series 4’s mast is 50mm
wider than the model it replaces
while the truck’s overhead safety
guard offers a virtually completely
unobstructed view.
A number of safety features have
also been introduced to the new Series
4 as standard. For example, the trucks
all feature Jungheinrich’s Curve
Control which automatically reduces
the truck’s drive speed as it enters a
corner by monitoring the truck’s speed,
wheel position and steering angle.
At the heart of the Curve Control
system is a continuously working
sensing unit that monitors the truck’s
steering angle. Simply stated, the
system quickly and effectively
reduces the drive speed when an
excessive steering angle is sensed.
Jungheinrich claim that trucks
fitted with Curve Control offer
market leading stability
Craig Johnson comments: “When a
customer invests in a Jungheinrich
truck they expect to get a top quality
product. Our new Series 4 truck offers
quality and performance from a truck
designed to meet the requirements of
clients operating in a broad range of
industry sectors.”
HOW TO CHOOSE A WMS VENDOR
THE COMMENT FROM WAREHOUSE & LOGISTICS NEWS
B
uying a warehouse management system (WMS)
for a large business can be costly and worrisome,
not least because the fallout from a
disastrous installation could cripple a company and its
stock market rating. A recent example was a household
name retailer whose new WMS left many of its shops
short of stock and a multi-million pound headache.
It could be said that headaches begin over trying to
decide the best solution from a bewildering array of WMS
suppliers, some of whom are pure software vendors while
others are automated hardware and WMS contractors.
The following few points may help ease the selection
process. The most single important factor to look for is a
track record in your particular areas, advises John Harper,
sales applications manager for Dematic. This should
ensure that the product will fit the business requirements.
Other points to consider are:
Talk to your peers in other companies and attend
industry forums and conferences. The feedback could be of
inestimable value.
Fix the price against headline functional requirements
from the outset. Will the supplier fix the price for both
licence and deployment costs? The larger players are typically
hard to pin down on deployment costs at the outset
and cost control can be difficult thereafter. The fact is that
cost overruns and busting of time scales are not uncommon.
Look at the ongoing revenue costs. Some suppliers
charge annual licence fees for software, but more important
is the need for top line operational support, with
options based on hours of cover required.
What is the supplier’s approach to upgrades and support?
Will they force you to upgrade once their current
software version comes out of support? This could be costly.
If you cannot find an exact match to your business
needs, don’t be afraid of customisation but look to a supplier
with a strong track record in this area.
The choice of suppliers is eased when there is a need to
invest in automated hardware as well. Perceived wisdom suggests
giving priority to a hardware/software house. At the
least you should purchase a ‘WCS’-level system from the
SG WORLD LAUNCHES
NEXT GENERATION DIGITAL PEN AT IOSH
A LEADING supplier of innovative
products that help companies
achieve best practice in health and
safety is launching its next generation
digital pen inspection system at
IOSH 2012.
SG World, which provides simple
and effective compliance solutions for
more than 20,000 customers across the
UK, will be showcasing InspectIT - a
digital pen using intelligent technology
to capture information for
easily accessible analysis and
reporting.
The new system enables companies
and organisations to
evolve from paper based
processes seamlessly and without
major changes to their current
inspection procedures.
It writes with ink allowing the user
to complete a paper based inspection
report which can be displayed on
each piece of equipment; the information
can then be downloaded to a web
based portal via the pen’s docking
station.
Using Intelligent Character
Recognition technology, the pen is
suitable for a range of industry
inspections on equipment such as
forklift trucks, racking, cranes, scaffolding
and vehicles, and has already
been successfully piloted by a number
of businesses.
Delegates at IOSH will also be
able to learn more about other
products in the SG World portfolio,
pick up samples, speak to
members of the team and take
part in their lucky lanyard competition
to win Red Letter Day
vouchers.
There will be information about
the popular Safe-INSPECT range -
a paper based system which can
be tailored for individual requirements
to demonstrate compliance
with a raft of HSE regulations and
guidelines. SG World’s Contractor
Management system, which maps
automation supplier. This guarantees that the automation
will be optimised by the software, which is critical. Other
advantages by choosing from the more advanced automation
suppliers, says John Harper, is that by offering full WMS-level
software as well they bequeath the benefits of a one-stop
shop approach. These include initial purchase cost which is
almost always cheaper overall, and as regards ongoing revenue
cost there is only one support package instead of two.
The single WMS approach is more likely to succeed, or
succeed more quickly, as integration complexity is
reduced. But if one chooses to go down the separate WMS
and WCS route then choose a WMS supplier with experience
of integration to an underlying WCS. Many do not
understand this sufficiently well or lack experience.
Daunting though implementing a WMS may seem to some
it would be dangerous to dismiss the great benefits that can
accrue from a well-chosen and implemented WMS. Even parts
of them, like a stock forecasting program, can yield stunningly
short payback periods, like the Slimstock package which paid
for itself in two weeks when used by a fertiliser company.
the first time that this kind of technology
has been used for inspection
processes and enables information
“It mirrors the traditional
paper-based processes which
people are familiar with so there’s
no requirement for additional
Cost savings will, of course, depend
on many factors, especially the efficiency
of the operation before the
introduction of the WMS. Dematic says that
on average in non-automated scenarios they
achieve an ROI of between 20% and 30% per
annum. If automation solutions are added this
return can be much higher. In a recent example
for a large fashion retailer they introduced a major goods-to-man
picking solution which paid for itself in 15 months, based on labour
savings, despite the relatively high capital cost of such installations.
Nowadays, serious failures are uncommon but to minimise
such risks clients should look at their input during the initial workshop
phase. If the project scope changes significantly during the
implementation phase, it is likely that the phase will need to be
extended, a process that must be handled pragmatically by both
customer and supplier. After going live, manage the ramp-up
phase in a controlled manner. Beware also of outsourcing solutions
abroad that have not been developed and tested in the UK.
keeping our Health and Safety management
at the forefront of this
legislation.”
SAFEcontractor is applicable to
most sectors although it is particularly
relevant to property, facilities
management, food manufacture,
retail and leisure sectors, all of which
are big users of contract services.
John Kinge, Head of Risk at
SAFEcontractor recently gave a clear
warning to companies employing
contractors: "Major organisations can
no longer run the risk of employing
contractors who are not able to prove
that they have sound health and
safety policies".
TOP SAFETY ACCREDITATION RENEWED FOR INOTEC UK
"More companies need to understand
the importance of adopting
good risk management in the way
that INOTEC UK has done. The
firm’s high standard has set an
example, which hopefully will be followed
by other companies within the
sector".
Under the SAFEcontractor system,
businesses undergo a vetting process,
which examines health and safety
procedures and their track record for
safe practice. Those companies
meeting the high standard are
included on a database, which is
accessible to registered users only via
a website, www.safecontractor.com
Employer-organisations who sign
up to the scheme can access the database,
enabling them to vet potential
contractors before they even set foot
on site. These employers agree that,
as users of the scheme, they will
engage only those who have received
accreditation.
Over one hundred and fifty major
nation-wide businesses, from several
key sectors, have signed up to use the
scheme when selecting contractors for
services such as building, cleaning,
maintenance, refurbishment or electrical
and mechanical work.

fulfilment and distribution markets.
“We saw an industry that has been
relying on laser technology and knew
that we could offer a better, yet affordable,
image-based solution for high
speed logistics applications,” says
Carl Gerst, Vice President and
Business Unit Manager, ID Products.
He continues, “The DataMan 500
TOMTOM ANNOUNCES GROUND-BREAKING INSURANCE PARTNERSHIP
TomTom has made a landmark
move into the insurance market by
providing the technology behind a
new insurance product, which bases
premiums on driving behaviour.
TomTom has teamed up with insurance
broker Motaquote for the launch
of Fair Pay Insurance - a product that
rewards ‘good’ drivers with lower
premiums.
“Our entry in the insurance market
with our proven fleet management
technology puts us at the forefront of
a move that could help to revolutionise
the motor insurance industry,”
said Thomas Schmidt, Managing
Director TomTom Business Solutions.
“We offer a unique combination of
navigation, traffic information and
telematics which opens up great
opportunities for insurance companies
to promote greener, safer driving
and create a ground breaking portfolio
of new insurance products.”
“We are delighted Motaquote have
recognised this potential in the launch
of such an innovative product.”
Fair Pay Insurance gives drivers
control over their own policy by using
driving ability and behaviour to allocate
premiums, rather than so-called
risk factors such as postcode, gender,
and age or vehicle type.
“We’ve dispensed with generalisations
and said to our customers, if you
believe you’re a good driver, we’ll
believe you and we’ll even give you
the benefit up front,” said Nigel
Lombard, Managing Director of Fair
Pay Insurance.
“This is unlike some other telematicsbased
schemes where you may have to
prove your ability over a number of
months. So if you think of your insurance
as your car’s MPG - the better you
drive, the longer your fuel will last. It’s
the same with Fair Pay Insurance, good
drivers get more for their money and in
that sense they will pay ultimately less.”
Drivers who sign up for Fair Pay
will benefit from a specially-developed
TomTom PRO 3100 navigation
device, which includes Active Driver
Feedback and LIVE Services.
2D MEETS RFID
NEW OPTIONS FOR THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY
David Drinnan Managing Director
of inotec UK examines the selection of
new technologies for auto identification
in the logistics industry.
Working in the Auto ID industry for
over 30 years I have seen the rise of barcode
technology and more recently, the
advent of RFID and 2D codes coming to
the fore. With finances tight at the current
time, it is even more important that
well informed decisions are made when
considering which technology you will
employ, to gain the maximum business
advantage and future proof your IT
system.
In this article I hope to outline the main
technology’s strengths and limitations.
1. Barcode; this is the most established
technology by far and barcoding’s
success in automating accurate data
input is well documented. Wide usage
has resulted in a range of very affordable
readers and terminals and innovative
label designs such as the oblique labels
for racking to prevent incorrect scanning
of labels. The technology is well proven
with a range of international standards
supporting global adoption. In addition,
readers are relatively inexpensive and
barcode is a well proven technology.
However barcodes can only carry a
limited data and usually rely on a remote
database to provide information. Apart
from very basic systems, they cannot
therefore be stand alone data carriers.
2. 2D codes; these can be split into 2
types- stacked and matrix codes;
a. Stacked codes; these are literally
multilevel barcode symbols and are
used widely in the shipping industry.
Readable with many standard barcode
readers, these symbols can encode over
2000 characters in one symbol and are a
printed, portable data file! 2D codes also
encode all ASCII characters so can for
example, hold photographic images on
driving licenses.
b. Matrix codes; are a complete image
and only readable using 2D image
readers. With the advent of the mobile
phone camera, reading systems which
use the same digital imaging technology
have become increasingly less expensive
and matrix codes are advancing in use
at an ever accelerating rate.
As unlike stacked codes, 2D matrix
are read as a total image, this has several
advantages;
1. More data can be stored in a
smaller image.
www.warehousenews.co.uk/it
T: 01923 272 960 I E: warehouse@flame1.com
2. Due to error correction many 2D
codes can be read when as much as 60%
of the image is damaged or hidden.
3. As the reading system is photographic,
multiple codes can be read at
the same time in seconds -up to 100
codes in applications we are currently
working with.
4. As this is an image based reading
system, an electronic proof of packing
and quantity can also be recorded at the
same time. In addition faulty symbols
can be easily identified from the image
which high-lights non-reading codes.
5. While 2D codes are just appearing in
industry and logistics markets, many
standard mobiles will read 2D codes as
they are being used more widely for marketing
and customer feedback campaigns.
RFID
This technology seen as new and
‘sexy’ is rapidly gaining ground and will
develop new markets for logistics over
the coming years. The RFID tag can carry
up to 1250 characters and be read and
importantly, written to with new data.
While a more expensive option than
barcode or 2D codes, this means that an
RFID enabled item can for example
become a smart tote or pallet, with the
ability to be interrogated from as far
away as 4 metres. Also the tag can be
reused so can be a multi trip item. There
are however some restrictions on the
use of standard RFID tags where metal
or liquids are present. Advice on frequency,
tag types and reading devices is
available from inotec.
Conclusion & Further Information
With so many options, choosing the
right technology is even more critical.
The good news is that International standards
are in place for all these Auto ID
options. It should also be remembered
that other technologies such as voice and
vision systems can also be incorporated
ensuring improved performance, accuracy
and speed demanded in modern
logistics installations.
If you require more information, a
full DVD of our Logistics Link South
presentation covering the above technologies
and including a diagnostic
session is available free of charge.
The UK’s favourite slimming club,
Slimming World, has significantly
improved handling and storage procedures
at its headquarters in Alfreton
after taking delivery of two Aisle-
Master articulated forklifts. The
vehicles will be used in the company’s
newly built warehouse facility.
Slimming World has experienced phenomenal
growth recently - 40% year on
year since 2008 - and the increased
volume of marketing materials, books,
newsletters, Slimming World Magazine
and hi-fi cereal bars to support 3,000
franchised Consultants who run 8,000
groups resulted in the need for a new
look at warehousing operations.
“We used to have a lot of off site
storage”, explains Facilities Manager
Paul James. “But as we had land available
we decided to relocate everything
under one roof. This has consolidated
our ordering systems, reduced distribution
costs and lowered our carbon
footprint.” As Slimming World was
starting with a clean sheet it consulted
Kevin White from Langley Mechanical
Handling to assist with getting the best
specifications all round for optimum performance
from the 1,400m² purpose built
warehouse.
The choice of forklifts was obviously a
key issue, and initial thoughts of a reach
truck were discounted when Kevin
demonstrated the advantages of the
Aisle-Master. “We were won over by its
FORK TRUCK NEWS
versatility to work inside and out as well
as the opportunity to save space,” says
Paul. “Although we have ample pallet
space at the moment we wanted to
future proof our operations. The trucks’
ability to work in very narrow aisles
means that even if growth continues at
this rate we are assured of plenty of
room.” The current pallet count of 1,600
is 30% up on what could have been
achieved with reach trucks.
Slimming World despatches more
than 400,000 parcels each year to
Consultants across the British Aisles and
Ireland. Materials range from display
boards, leaflets and posters to recipe
books, high fibre cereal bars and best
selling Slimming World magazine. The
Aisle-Masters work outside for on and
during braking so that, in most applications,
a truck will operate for two shifts
without the need for a battery change.
In fact, according to independent tests,
SHEDDING LIGHT ON WAREHOUSE ENERGY COSTS
THE COMMENT FROM WAREHOUSE & LOGISTICS NEWS
Identifying energy savings in warehouses
might appear to require much research but the
answer is often just above one’s head -
lighting, which typically accounts for at least 60% of
all warehouse energy consumed. And nor is the cost
of implementing an energy management system too
expensive to consider, even for small companies.
Fees may be charged for energy surveys but sometimes
they can be free like those from the Carbon
Trust, which also helps with interest-free loans.
More importantly, a new energy management
system can deliver a short payback of under two
years and it should ensure compliance with legal
requirements on lighting levels and minimise the
risks to staff, whose vision capabilities can vary
widely depending on age. Improved lighting systems
will also help users meet their carbon emissions targets
and keep them in good regard by their main
Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability,
leading materials handling manufacturer
George Utz Ltd is now generating its own
energy to help run operations at Alfreton in
Derbyshire, with the installation of solar energy
panels.
210 Bosch photovoltaic solar panels and 3 SMA
solar inverters were installed on the factory roof
last month by Nottingham energy company Life
Long Energy.
Part of the privately owned, Swiss company
Utz Group, George Utz has been manufacturing
here in the UK since 1990. As a plastics manufacturer,
the company has always taken its
environmental responsibilities very seriously and
in 2010 was awarded ISO 14001:2004 accreditation,
in recognition of its efforts to reduce its
impact on the environment.
Project Manager Shaun Batty (pictured) com-
customers who will want their suppliers to act
responsibly on green issues.
An effective energy management will ensure that
unnecessary lighting is eliminated by sensors and light
dimmers. Only now, says Steve Gardner, director of
Lutterworth Ecolighting, is it gradually dawning on UK
businesses that significant savings can be had through
a change of lighting and controls. Before certain technical
advances, the ability to adjust lighting according
to workers’ presence was not practical with some
lights like high intensity discharge (HID) lamps which
can take up to 15 minutes to reach full light output.
Today, however, high efficiency fluorescent lamps
(T5) can achieve comparable light outputs of HID
lights, using much less energy and giving a higher level
of control flexibility.
Businesses are taking to LED lights more for many
applications, says Ian Hambly, of Somar, and their
ability to perform well at very low temperatures
makes them attractive to cold store operators.
Standard T5 fluorescent lamps will perform poorly at
0 Centigrade and very poorly at minus 25 C. However,
Somar claims that LEDs do not present a cost effective
solution to high bays. In recent tests it found that
by taking LED lights and comparing their performance
with T5 it was found that at heights of about 9 mt two
LEDs were required for 1 T5 unit and at 12 mt the ratio
was 3:1. In addition, they say the dimming controls
associated with LEDs are well behind in functionality
and intelligence. Compared with HPS or MH fittings
LEDs should deliver 50% energy savings at lower
heights but above 10 mt the savings diminish as one
needs to increase the number of fittings to achieve the
light output.
It is still the case that many warehouses treat
lighting as the poor relation and most rely on internal
ments “These cells don’t need direct sunlight to
work - they can still generate some electricity
even on a cloudy day. This 49.9 kWp system will
produce up to 20% of our total energy requirements
- reducing our carbon footprint and
helping to keep operating costs to a minimum.”
To help put that into perspective, a car travelling
10,000 miles per annum will have a carbon
footprint of around 5.5 tonnes. Utz’s new solar
system is expected to produce around 41,064 kWh
of energy per year - the equivalent of over 31,000
tonnes of carbon.
General Manager Carsten Diekmann adds “we
believe in adopting robust environmental policies
wherever possible and being totally transparent
with our customers. That’s why we’re even
installing real time monitors to be displayed in
our reception area which will clearly show what
energy we’re using and what we’re generating
with the new solar system. Our customers are
increasingly requesting confirmation of our
“green” credentials during contractual negotiations.
Our investment in this renewable energy
source is a clear demonstration of our commitment
to minimising our impact on the
environment.
“Another example of this is our recycling
facility - customers can return their old containers
to be “chipped up” and the materials re-used to
produce new containers or other materials handling
equipment. By using recycled polymers, our
customers are not only doing their bit to help
reduce climate change, but also saving on costs -
on average, high quality recycled polymers are
30% cheaper than new, with little or no effect on
performance.”
As a UK manufacturer George Utz Ltd has
been well known for many years for providing
successful and reliable injection-moulded and
vacuum formed storage solutions to British and
European industry. It offers specialist technical
Cooper Lighting and Safety, a leading manufacturer
of mains and emergency lighting
solutions for commercial and industrial applications,
has introduced a new version of its
Linergy industrial luminaire, which provides an
energy-efficient T5 fluorescent alternative to the
discharge luminaires that were traditionally
used for high-bay and low-bay lighting.
Having been re-engineered for enhanced efficiency
and improved downward light output ratio (DLOR),
Linergy II is now available in 4 x 73W and 4 x 49W
models. Linergy II luminaires also offer an expanded
range to include an advanced rack reflector option
with focused vertical illumination as well as enclosed
versions incorporating an IP20 clear acrylic panel for
use in areas that require lamp-shatter protection.
maintenance regimes. Flickering
tubes and popped bulbs are often
ignored for too long, leading, in
some cases, to serious accidents.
Warehouse operators, therefore,
might usefully consider outsourcing
their lighting maintenance to their
lighting suppliers. This is not costly
and Lutterworth would typically charge about £15 per
fitting every four or five years.
Users contemplating a new energy management
system should also not be overly concerned about disruption
to the building and day-to-day operations.
NCS, an energy management company providing
With mounting pressure on businesses
to cut costs throughout their
organisation, warehousing and
industrial operations throughout the
UK often overlook one of the simplest
yet most effective ways of
saving money fast.
Lutterworth Ecolighting
designs, manufactures and installs
energy efficient lighting into warehouses
and industrial premises
across the country. The company
replaces traditional sodium
lighting with fully automatic
lighting systems that use individual
motion detection and
daylight dimming technology to
ensure lights only operate when
required.
Typically, this results in its customers
making energy savings in
excess of 70%. Return on investment is
rapid and is usually within one to
three years.
In addition to substantial economic
benefits, energy efficient
lighting provides a sustainable contribution
towards the fulfillment of
long-term environmental objectives.
Significantly lower energy consumption
means a reduced carbon
footprint and less impact on the
environment.
Aside from the financial and
environmental factors, the most
obvious and instant benefit of
energy-efficient lighting is the superior
light quality that the new
technology generates. The result of
a lighter and brighter working environment
is improved visibility and
enhanced workplace safety for
employees.
Working closely with its customers,
Lutterworth Ecolighting’s
trained engineers coordinate all
installations carefully to ensure minimal
disruption to day-to-day
operations.
The numerous benefits of energyefficient
lighting have recently been
extolled to Carlsberg by consultants
EHS Projects.
Steve Powers, Director at EHS
Projects says: “We have worked
with Lutterworth Ecolighting for
several years now and we are
delighted to be at the point in this
project where their lighting solution
is installed and contributing
to Carlsberg’s carbon reduction
commitment. The installation of
Ecolite technology into the
national network of distribution
centres will help Carlsberg with
this commitment, but will also
improve the working environment
for the employees and generate
significant cost savings for the
business.”
"The significant savings available
through a change of lighting is
gradually dawning on UK businesses
and this is being reflected in
the growing number of enquiries
we are receiving - especially from
24-hour warehousing and distribution
operations," says Lutterworth
Ecolighting's sales and marketing
director, Steve Gardner. "Even companies
with strict limits on capital
expenditure are able to achieve
worthwhile benefits through a
simple review of their current
lighting configuration and
strategy.”
Lutterworth Ecolighting designs,
manufactures and installs energy-efficient
lighting solutions in
warehousing and industrial operations
throughout the UK.
The company’s fully automatic
lighting systems only operate when
required by incorporating individual
motion detection and daylight dimming
technology. This results in
customers regularly achieving savings
of more than 70 per cent in energy
costs.
Offering a full turnkey service
that includes site surveys, design,
installation, warranty and after
sales care, Lutterworth
Ecolighting is a member of the
Electrical Contractors’ Association
and employs its own qualified
engineers.
As a Part L registered company,
its comprehensive range of light fittings
OCG Lighting’s Epoch range
includes two products. The Epoch X
operates at 170 watts and offers an
equivalent light output to a 400 watt
metal halide (which consumes 480
watts, providing an ideal replacement
for a 250 watt metal halide (which
consumes 300 watts).
In addition to this significant
energy saving, the Epoch range is
maintenance free for 60,000+ hours
negating the need for expensive relamping
SAVE MONEY… SEE THE LIGHT!
The demand for reducing your
carbon footprint is an on-going issue
in today’s environment, and of
course business leaders are continually
looking for ways to save money,
especially in the current economic
climate. This is why more and more
people are switching over to LED
lighting as a way of reducing carbon
emissions, saving money and energy
and INCREASING THEIR PROFITS.
In 2010, LED lighting was not that
high on the agenda for factories and
warehouses. Sales in 2011 leapt dramatically
and are becoming even
more popular in 2012, with key factors
of LED lighting bringing a reduction
in energy, costs and maintenance,
warehouse managers are highly
enthusiastic at how these LED units
can increase profits, maximise efficiency
and create a safer and more
LIGHTS THE WAY IN SAVING ENERGY
Arla Foods’ National
Distribution Centre (NDC) in
Stourton, Leeds, has helped the
company reduce its energy consumption
and move a step closer to
achieving its environmental targets
- simply by replacing the lightbulbs.
Stourton NDC replaced 382
sodium lights with 375 LED lights,
in its chilled warehouse space,
reducing the wattage from 480w to
just 80w. The new lights have a
lifespan of 10 years and, unlike
sodium lights, are a lot clearer and
brighter.
Paul Lloyd, vice president for
operations at Arla, said: “This
process will contribute towards
achieving the company target of
reducing CO2 emissions by 34 per
cent by 2020. Lighting is our second
biggest power usage after refrigeration.
With the LEDs, not only do we
save on electricity from the lower
wattage, but we also expect to see a
decrease in energy used in refrigeration
because the lights throw off no
heat whatsoever.
It is expected the site’s annual
power use will drop significantly.
Consumption figures have shown
that the new lighting reduced C02
emmisions by 261 tonnes in just six
months, from June to December
2011.
Paul added: “We are now looking
into phase two of the process, which
will see the NDC offices, yard and
service roads using the same LED
technology, further reducing our
CI LOGISTICS AWARDED
THREE CONTRACTS TO SUPPLY CONVEYORS TO CATERPILLAR INC.
CI Logistics, the specialist materials
handling solutions provider to
the engineering and manufacturing
industry, has been awarded three
contracts to supply conveyor systems
to Caterpillar Inc., the world’s
leading manufacturer of construction
and mining equipment, diesel and
natural gas engines, industrial gas
turbines and diesel electric locomotives.
Two of the contracts secured by CI
Logistics are to supply materials handling
solutions to Caterpillar UK’s
Building Construction Products facilities
in Leicester and Stockton. The
third contract is to design, manufacture
and install a pallet conveyor
system incorporating hydraulic lifts
into the Caterpillar Logistics facility
located in Gosselies, Belgium.
Gary Bale, managing director of CI
Logistics, comments “Over the years
we have demonstrated a clear capability
to design and manufacture
conveyor systems for heavy product
production lines. I am certain that it is
Pay how you drive insurance
using telematics systems has begun
to revolutionise insurance for young
drivers.
To meet demand, during 2011 a
number of British telematics suppliers
joined forces with insurance companies
to offer services aimed at the
retail sector, and, in particular, young
drivers.
Over coming months, I predict, the
sector will grow rapidly as more
insurance brands enter the market.
Meanwhile, the same telematics
technology is set to reduce the cost of
fleet-based insurance, although here
the insurance industry is dealing with
a different set of issues.
For example, in the case of retail
insurance an individual driver’s profile
governs premium costs - but with
transport fleets a single overall premium
is charged, the amount being
determined by different drivers’ risk
profiles. By implementing management
systems based on telematics
data, fleet operators are able to cut
risk - and, therefore, insurance premiums
- dramatically.
For the rest of the year and beyond
pay how you drive insurance is certain
to set the pace, allowing fleets to
pay only for mileage covered, provide
lower premiums for better driving
styles, and help fleet managers decide
at an earlier stage which drivers
might pose a higher risk.
Moreover, the technology can help
them recognise those drivers most
likely to have an accident, and spot
any high risk driving styles before
they become a liability. Not surprisingly,
fleet operators’ interest in
TELEMATICS INSURANCE
SET TO REDUCE FLEET PREMIUMS
- BY ANDY KIRK, SALES AND MARKETING DIRECTOR, QUARTIX
Andy Kirk, sales and marketing director,
Quartix.
telematics insurance is gathering pace.
And I expect many more transport
fleets will adopt the new products in
coming months, not least because of
the cost savings to be made.
My prediction is based on hard
experience, our company is one of the
pioneers of telematics-insurance technology.
Telmatics uptake has been remarkable:
this year we will have installed
more than 18,000 tracking systems.
Now, it is virtually certain the use
of telematics data in risk assessment
will migrate to the fleet sector.
NORBERT DENTRESSANGLE
PROVIDES ‘ZOOM-ZOOM’ IMPLEMENTATION FOR MAZDA
Norbert Dentressangle has won a new
three-year contract with leading car manufacturer
Mazda Motors UK Ltd.
The Japanese company has appointed
Norbert Dentressangle to provide a flexible
transport solution for the distribution of
automotive parts and accessories to its franchised
dealerships across the UK.
Mazda selected Norbert Dentressangle
based on its ability to accommodate fluctuations
in order volumes and short lead times.
As well as a flexible service, the supply
chain specialist had the systems and
expertise to meet Mazda’s requirement for a
speedy implementation - it took just two
weeks and three days from the date the contract
was awarded to start of operations.
Norbert Dentressangle makes collections
from Mazda’s parts distribution centre in
Staplehurst, Kent, and delivers consignments
via its national shared-user night network to
approximately 170 dealers per night. Up to
3,200 modules including parcels, roll cages
and large cartons are delivered every week
before 8:00am the next day.
Mazda is the latest automotive brand to
benefit from the flexibility and inherent efficiencies,
including reduced vehicle mileage
Bromsgrove MP, Sajid Javid, officially
opened multi temperature supply chain specialist
Oakland International’s new storage
facility at Beoley in Redditch on Friday 27th
January, completing the company’s recent £3
million investment programme supported by
Barclays Corporate, with the warehouse being
the final stage of the current development.
Oakland International MD, Dean
Attwell, commenting on their investment
said: “This is a huge step forward for our
business and is testimony to the great work
of the Oakland team, our customers and our
supplier partnerships - without their passion
and commitment to Oakland, investment decisions
of this magnitude would not be possible.
We are delighted Sajid Javid was able to officially
open our new facility and for the clear
support initiatives that the Government is
directing towards business growth in general.
“Oakland is based in Redditch but is also
located within Bromsgrove District Council
boundary - we are grateful for the support
of Bromsgrove District Council and
Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber
of Commerce for their support in getting
this project off the ground.”
Despite the challenging economic climate,
the Midlands based firm have continued to
drive growth of around 25% year on year.
Their new 55,000 sq ft warehouse provides
an additional 8,000 pallet spaces and incorporates
a deep chill storage chamber to support
seasonal requirements, as well as specialist
storage for year-round supply chain solutions,
extending Oakland the opportunity to
accommodate organic growth of existing
clients and work with even greater numbers
pated demand for consumables and for managing
changes to delivery times, unloading
times and delivery frequency. For ease of
planning, they will be able to use the special
filters and congestion profiles that Paragon
provides.
The software development undertaken
by Paragon will help its customers to prepare
for the disruption and challenges such
as automatically identifying delivery points
that may be affected and understanding
where the likely areas of congestion will be
due to specific road-based events. They will
also be able to identify and exclude those
sections of the network likely to affect their
delivery operations so that delivery vehicles
avoid them on the day of the event.
“There is still time available to model,
plan and prepare for the impact that the
Olympic Games will have on our clients
and their distribution operations,” comments
William Salter, Paragon’s Managing
Director. “We are actively encouraging
Paragon customers to use the added functionality
we are offering with the free
and lower CO2 emissions, of the Norbert
Dentressangle night network.
“The execution of the implementation
process was very challenging in such a
short timescale,” comments Mazda’s Parts
and Accessories Sales Manager, David
Elphick. “With Norbert Dentressangle’s
automotive night network we can react
quickly to orders of any size from our
dealers. The parts are guaranteed to reach
dealerships before 8:00am the next day,
which in turn enables them to deliver a
high level of service to their customers.”
of producers and manufacturers wishing to
gain access to the competitive retailer market.
Bromsgrove MP and PPS to the
Chancellor of the Exchequer George
Osborne, Sajid Javid, stated: “I was delighted
to open Oakland International’s new facility.
It’s a fantastic growing and confident business,
that’s creating the local jobs we need.”
Investing at a time of economic challenge
places Oakland International in a solid position,
and when the economy picks up, they
will emerge stronger. Installation of green
and energy efficient technologies has been
key in the development of Oakland
International’s new warehouse which incorporates
energy efficient chillers, high levels
of insulation and LED lighting.
Said Dean: “With Barclays Corporate
backing for the project, which was a measure
of their confidence in our ability to perform,
the new warehouse has extended our capabilities,
and allowed us to retain and improve
our competitive offer, whilst supporting
planned growth. Increased capacity in the
UK will directly influence and benefit the
company’s Irish export and trade operations,
with exports increasing between the two
countries, Ireland to the UK and vice versa.”
Lindsay Pearson, Relationship Director,
Barclays Corporate stated: “Barclays is committed
to using our industry expertise and
specialists to support such propositions, which
bring real benefits to the local community.
By really understanding the business, Barclays
Corporate has been able to support Oakland
International both financially and professionally
throughout this latest expansion."
Oakland International’s development
Olympic Planning Pack to help them with
maintaining good service and allow them to
enjoy playing their part in making both
games a great success for the UK.”
BIOMASS POSES PRICE CHALLENGE FOR TIMBER PALLETS
THE COMMENT FROM WAREHOUSE & LOGISTICS NEWS
T
he debate surrounding issues of timber versus
plastic pallets has been aired over decades and
shows no sign of easing, says LPR UK’s MD,
Jane Gorick. But a new environmental development
promises to raise temperatures as the timber and plastic
camps lock horns. That issue is biomass demand which
could see timber pallet prices rise uncomfortably. But
another major factor that will influence the pallet
industry this year is carbon reduction targets.
Timber remains the dominant material for UK pallets,
accounting for around 90% of the 70 million pallets in circulation,
and a recently-commissioned study reveals that
more timber pallets and packaging than ever are being reused,
repaired or recycled but the amount of re-used
/recycled timber used in manufacturing increased from
only 9% to 12.7% as a proportion of the total timber pallet
population.
Hemel Hempstead based new business,
Shipmore Limited, is developing a
new product called ‘STAKA’ that saves
money by safely stacking pallets inside
freight vehicles - enabling transport operators
to ship more goods in existing
vehicles. Working with Health & Safety
Laboratories in Buxton, Shipmore are
testing their new product under different
road and load conditions to ensure safety
for drivers and loading personnel.
With transport costs rising every year,
there is tremendous pressure on transport
operators to make the most of their vehicles’
freight capacity. “What happens when you
turn up at a depot with a vehicle that can
carry 26 pallets and you have 32 waiting to
transport?” asks Nina Day at Health & Safety
Laboratories. “The temptation to stack the
extra pallets on top of smaller ones must be
tremendous, but this can lead to a significant
risk of load slip and collateral damage as
well as damaging the goods below and
endangering the lives of the driver, other
road users and unloading personnel.”
Launching later this year, STAKA is a
modular double-decking solution to suit
most freight vehicles. Comprising a lightweight
steel frame with a wooden deck,
STAKA stands over a pallet of goods
enabling a second pallet to travel above. Both
the extra pallet and the STAKA need to be
strapped down to the deck of the vehicle but
the extra handling involved is small compared
to having to send a vehicle out twice.
“The flexible, re-usable nature of our
product means that transport operators can
equip an entire vehicle with STAKAs to create
a complete double-deck, or just one or two
pallet spaces - enabling them to carry a mix of
tall and small pallets in the same vehicle”
says Shipmore’s founder, Philippa Bell.
Shipmore are keen to ensure their new
product is safe for general use. That’s why
they’re working with Health & Safety
Laboratories to test their new product.
“Anyone can potentially ‘knock-up’ a metal
Hitherto, timber has always enjoyed a steep price advantage
over plastic pallets but that differential looks set to
change unless, perhaps, lobbies can persuade the Government
to abandon subsidies that encourage the burning of wood in
biomass plants. These subsidies have helped raise Britishgrown
timber prices from £30 to £50 per tonne over 5 years
and the Department of Energy and Climate Change has forecast
that biomass demand could put up the price of wood to
£114 a tonne in the near to medium term.
According to Jim Hardisty, MD of Goplasticpallets, the
rising price of timber has already had a knock-on effect on
the cost of wooden pallets with customers refusing to buy
new ones and would also affect availability if biomass
escalates at the rate predicted. This will only reduce the
pool of good quality wooden pallets in circulation.
Certainly the market for new pallets has decreased in
favour of pooling and recovery activity.
SAFE PALLET STACKING
SAVES MONEY AND LIVES
frame - but would you seriously take the
risk?” asks Shipmore’s co-founder, Richard
Malczyk “We’ve used computer-aided
stress analysis to ensure the STAKA can
comfortably survive both the static and
dynamic stresses of moving heavy goods in
transit. With Health & Safety Laboratories’
help we’re testing these under real road
conditions to ensure they’re safe.”
Transport operators have already seen
the cost savings of moving more pallets on
double-deck vehicles, but at 5 metres high
these are very large vehicles with restrictions
on where they can go. “They certainly
can’t be used in Europe on international
routes” says Philippa Bell “That’s where
STAKA really saves money by improving
space efficiency in existing vehicles. The
product pays for itself in just a few trips and
continues delivering savings thereafter.”
Making better use of existing road vehicles
means higher volumes can be carried
with fewer trucks - and that means less
cost, less road congestion and less CO2
emissions. That’s got to be good for transport
operators, good for the economy and
good for the environment!
Takeover major step in international
growth ambitions of re-branded group.
Faber Halbertsma Group, Europe’s
biggest pallet producer and second largest
pallet pooling company, today announced
the acquisition of PAKi Logistics, the
market leader in the pooling of standardised
load carriers. Through this acquisition,
the family business, based in Eck en Wiel in
the European market. The acquisition also
marks a major milestone in the international
growth ambitions of FHG.
PAKi Logistics, based in Ennepetal,
Germany, has for over 35 years been organising
- along with more than a hundred specialists,
10,000 pooling stations and more than
two million pallets, boxes and plastic load carriers
- logistic services in the whole of Europe.
Using the latest web-based technology, PAKi
Logistics ensures that its customers in industry,
trade and transport easily have the right quality
load carrier quickly available in the required
quantity at the right time in the right location.
The company has a growing annual turnover,
which in 2011 was around 40 million Euros.
FEATURE PALLET FOCUS
Concerns over carbon footprints could also tip the
scales in plastic’s favour. While it is true that timber is a
renewable resource that absorbs carbon and that plastic
comes from finite fossil fuel, environmentally concerned
corporations look over the long term to reduce their
carbon footprint. Plastic pallets and containers can last up
to 10 times longer than timber and while timber pallets
can be repaired more easily than plastic each time that is
done it involves expensive energy. Moreover, plastic pallets
can be made to nest and being only a small fraction of
a timber pallet’s weight they can offer clients the excellent
space-saving, carbon-cutting solution by significantly
reducing costs on return journey transportation. At the
end of their life both timber and plastic can be recycled.
Certain industries, like food, eschew timber pallets in
manufacturing environments for hygiene reasons but Jane
Gorick believes that there are misconceptions about
Goplasticpallets.com’s rapid growth over
the last few years has resulted in the company
expanding its warehouse facility in Eastbourne,
East Sussex, which now stocks an even
greater range of plastic pallets and containers.
The warehouse expansion has made it
possible for Goplasticpallets.com to double the
volume of products it holds in stock, allowing
the company to offer customers the widest selection
Jim Hardisty, Managing Director for
Goplasticpallets.com, said: “Our close partnerships
most cases, we can offer next day delivery on stock
items - a huge advantage for many companies,
particularly leading up to the London Olympics.”
Faber Halbertsma Group completed the
acquisition under a new name, FHG, covering
all subsidiaries of the group. As a result,
PAKi Logistics will be re-branded FHG PAKi.
The re-branding of the whole group will reinforce
FHG’s market position as a full-line
supplier. FHG sells, hires, repairs and trades
pallets and can, depending on the supply
chain in which a customer operates, offer a
full combination of products and services. In
future, all subsidiaries will be recognised by
the new FHG logo.
further expanding and strengthening our
European network. The pooling activities
and the expanded network of PAKi
addition to the international
pooling activities of FHG. It allows us to
offer our full-line services on a wider scale.”
being purported as fact and that
these need to be challenged.
“Regardless of material, a pallet will
only ever be as clean as its environment,”
she says. That is debatable on various
counts. Some hygienic plastic pallets
have a totally smooth, sealed top deck,
so there are no pockets, where dust, dirt
and other potentially harmful contaminates can build up
and the pallet can be easily cleaned manually or with an
automated system. Timber pallets can also be problematic
when manually handled owing to splinters and
exposed nails. This writer has also seen many warehouses
using damaged timber pallets which could destabilise
their loads but never seen broken plastic pallets.
The Specifiers Guide aims to assist buyers
through the specifying process of selecting the
right easySHELF for the right application, i.e.
choosing the smaller mesh aperture for smaller
boxed items or designing a complete bespoke deck
where additional support bars may be required.
Commenting on the launch of the new guide,
Abi Owen, Operational Director adds: “developing
this guide, we were determined to provide
the kind of specialist information from a single
source, to enable a more informed decision and
overall superior quality decking system.”
ACCELERATED R&D PROGRAMME
BRINGS RESULTS FOR PRINT & APPLY JS Desiccants will be showcasing
its Superdry container desiccant on
stand J333, Hall 20, at the Foodex
2012 exhibition, 25-27th March 2012
at the NEC.
Superdry container desiccant
Logopak has developed longer life print heads for its current print & apply machines such as the 515
case labeller and will be increasing speeds to up to 200 a minute.
Print & apply labelling specialist
Logopak has announced first results
of an accelerated R&D programme,
set up last summer with the financial
backing of German charitable foundation
Possehl GmbH, which
acquired the company in July 2011.
“New technology to be applied to
Logopak equipment over the following
year now includes longer life print
heads, ultra-high speed systems for
case labelling and enhanced size range
for laser-based print & apply,” explains
UK general manager Wilson Clark.
Possehl is a €2 billion turnover
industrial group with its origins in the
nineteenth century steel industry and
interests that now include both
mechanical and electronic engineering.
Operating profits are
employed to fund charitable projects
in its home town of Lubeck and also
the surrounding region.
Among the first results of new
Logopak research supported by
Possehl is a new design of print head
that extends operating life by 30 per
cent. This is now being applied to
Logopak 515 case labelling machines
and to Logopak 815 pallet labellers.
The Logopak 400 series of compact
machines will also be similarly
equipped later this year.
Logopak’s Wilson Clark explains
how the work has also brought high
speed print & apply case labelling in
its wake.
“Up to now speeds in excess of 100
a minute have rarely been achievable.
However, electronic and mechanical
enhancements achieved with help
from Possehl group companies now
mean that speeds of 200 packs a
minute on standard print & apply
machines are potentially achievable.”
Logopak has drawn on experience
from another Possehl company to
extend the size range of its laser-based
print& apply machine, developed
originally to provide labels etched
into plastics or metal for harsh environments
such as steel and glass
production.
A double precision mirror arrangement
now provides a label size of A3, to
carry additional information or provide
improved visibility at greater distance.
JS DESICCANTS AT FOODEX 2012
Permaban will be revealing its
latest innovation for the first time on
stand M19 at the UK Concrete Show
in Coventry, 22-23 February.
Permaban is renowned for its
industry-defining armoured joints for
concrete floors. Yet the company’s
new product, branded Permaban
Signature®, takes a very different
approach from traditional joint
armouring.
Signature’s unique half-hexagon
shape prevents the wheels of materials
handling vehicles from falling
into the gap between the two edges of
a joint. As a result there is no impact
on either the joint or wheels, preventing
damage and costly repairs to
both. This ‘disruptive face’ technology
has been popular in road bridge construction
for many years, for that very
reason.
Because Permaban Signature® provides
smoother transit, vehicles can
move over the joints more quickly,
saving valuable time for warehouse
operators. Signature also eliminates
the ‘clunking’ noise often associated
with vehicles passing over joints -
simply because wheels do not impact
on the joint at all.
The product was designed to
address the challenges of directional
traffic. This typically occurs in
transfer and racking aisles, where
vehicles pass over a joint at a 90o
angle, causing the greatest impact.
Thanks to its shape, Permaban
Signature® offers smooth, fast,
noiseless transit, regardless of the
angle of approach. This means that
even if the building’s use and configuration
changes over time, with
Signature the joints will still be fully
protected.
Another unique feature is ‘fulldepth’
corrugation - meaning that the
joint is fully supported all the way to
the ground, for maximum strength
and stability.
The joint is designed to operate
with gap sizes of up to 40mm, making
it ideal for large-bay jointless concrete
floors, and cold stores and freezer
stores, where gap sizes are typically
larger.
Load transfer between adjacent
concrete floor slabs is accommodated
by square dowel bars. These are supplied
fully fixed into the product, to
prevent problems associated with
rounding the cargo heats up and
cools down. During the night the
humidity rises and moisture can
condense on the ceiling of the container,
where it drips on to and
damages the cargo. By hanging 8
to 12kg of Superdry desiccant
inside a 40ft container, the
humidity is kept below the level at
which condensation forms for the
duration of the journey. This protects
the cargo and ensures it
arrives in good condition.
Superdry is available in a variety
of sizes and with various mounting
options. Hooks or rope ties and a
rigid cardboard outer casing make
it easy to position inside a container.
As Superdry turns the
moisture to gel it contains no spillable
liquid and does not need
plastic drip trays to hold the moisture.
This means that Superdry
stays leak-free even with rough
handling.
Unlike high grade silica or clay
based desiccants, that can only
absorb up to 25% of their weight in
moisture, Superdry can remove up
to 200% its own weight in moisture
from an atmosphere. This higher
performance means a lesser quantity
is needed to maintain a low
humidity, which makes packing a
container more straight forward
and handling the desiccant much
easier.
dowel misalignment. Dowel length
has been carefully calculated by
design engineers to ensure efficient
load transfer is maintained even with
a gap size of 40mm.
By eliminating the need for heavy
joint armouring, Signature is lighter
and stiffer than many joints - making
it easy for operatives to lift,
manoeuvre and install on site.
