In addition, the terminal integrates next generation Adaptus Imaging Technology 6.0, allowing workers to swiftly read and decode linear and 2D bar codes and capture pictures. Adaptus 6.0 allows workers to accomplish more in less time through its decoding capabilities, enhanced motion tolerance functionalities and ability to read codes in various settings, including direct sunlight, darkness and under fluorescent lights. The 99EX’s durability reduces cost associated with device support and service for a lower total cost of ownership. The rugged IP67-rated device provides added protection, particularly when exposed to dust, water, or multiple drops to concrete from as high 1.5 meters. Further differentiating itself from other devices in the market, the battery life on the 99EX lasts upwards of 16 hours, supporting long shifts and overtime without the need to carry extra batteries or outfit delivery vehicles with chargers. TomTom has teamed up with insurance broker Motaquote for the launch of Fair Pay Insurance - a product that rewards ‘good’ drivers with lower premiums. “Our entry in the insurance market with our proven fleet management technology puts us at the forefront of a move that could help to revolutionise the motor insurance industry,” said Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director TomTom Business Solutions. “We offer a unique combination of navigation, traffic information and telematics which opens up great opportunities for insurance companies to promote greener, safer driving and create a ground breaking portfolio of new insurance products.” “We are delighted Motaquote have recognised this potential in the launch of such an innovative product.” Fair Pay Insurance gives drivers control over their own policy by using driving ability and behaviour to allocate premiums, rather than so-called risk factors such as postcode, gender, and age or vehicle type. “We’ve dispensed with generalisations and said to our customers, if you believe you’re a good driver, we’ll believe you and we’ll even give you the benefit up front,” said Nigel Lombard, Managing Director of Fair Pay Insurance. “This is unlike some other telematicsbased schemes where you may have to prove your ability over a number of months. WWW.WAREHOUSENEWS.CO.UK 2D MEETS RFID NEW OPTIONS FOR THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY David Drinnan Managing Director of inotec UK examines the selection of new technologies for auto identification in the logistics industry. Working in the Auto ID industry for over 30 years I have seen the rise of barcode technology and more recently, the advent of RFID and 2D codes coming to the fore. With finances tight at the current time, it is even more important that well informed decisions are made when considering which technology you will employ, to gain the maximum business advantage and future proof your IT system. In this article I hope to outline the main technology’s strengths and limitations. 1. Barcode; this is the most established technology by far and barcoding’s success in automating accurate data input is well documented. Wide usage has resulted in a range of very affordable readers and terminals and innovative label designs such as the oblique labels for racking to prevent incorrect scanning of labels. The technology is well proven with a range of international standards supporting global adoption. In addition, readers are relatively inexpensive and barcode is a well proven technology. However barcodes can only carry a limited data and usually rely on a remote database to provide information. Apart from very basic systems, they cannot therefore be stand alone data carriers. 2. 2D codes; these can be split into 2 types- stacked and matrix codes; a. Stacked codes; these are literally multilevel barcode symbols and are used widely in the shipping industry. Readable with many standard barcode readers, these symbols can encode over 2000 characters in one symbol and are a printed, portable data file! 2D codes also encode all ASCII characters so can for example, hold photographic images on driving licenses. b. Matrix codes; are a complete image and only readable using 2D image readers. With the advent of the mobile phone camera, reading systems which use the same digital imaging technology have become increasingly less expensive and matrix codes are advancing in use at an ever accelerating rate. As unlike stacked codes, 2D matrix are read as a total image, this has several advantages; 1. Due to error correction many 2D codes can be read when as much as 60% of the image is damaged or hidden. 3. As the reading system is photographic, multiple codes can be read at the same time in seconds -up to 100 codes in applications we are currently working with. 4. As this is an image based reading system, an electronic proof of packing and quantity can also be recorded at the same time. In addition faulty symbols can be easily identified from the image which high-lights non-reading codes. 5. While 2D codes are just appearing in industry and logistics markets, many standard mobiles will read 2D codes as they are being used more widely for marketing and customer feedback campaigns. RFID This technology seen as new and ‘sexy’ is rapidly gaining ground and will develop new markets for logistics over the coming years. The RFID tag can carry up to 1250 characters and be read and importantly, written to with new data. While a more expensive option than barcode or 2D codes, this means that an RFID enabled item can for example become a smart tote or pallet, with the ability to be interrogated from as far away as 4 metres. Also the tag can be reused so can be a multi trip item. There are however some restrictions on the use of standard RFID tags where metal or liquids are present. Advice on frequency, tag types and reading devices is available from inotec. Conclusion & Further Information With so many options, choosing the right technology is even more critical. The good news is that International standards are in place for all these Auto ID options. It should also be remembered that other technologies such as voice and vision systems can also be incorporated ensuring improved performance, accuracy and speed demanded in modern logistics installations. The vehicles will be used in the company’s newly built warehouse facility. Slimming World has experienced phenomenal growth recently - 40% year on year since 2008 - and the increased volume of marketing materials, books, newsletters, Slimming World Magazine and hi-fi cereal bars to support 3,000 franchised Consultants who run 8,000 groups resulted in the need for a new look at warehousing operations. “We used to have a lot of off site storage”, explains Facilities Manager Paul James. “But as we had land available we decided to relocate everything under one roof. This has consolidated our ordering systems, reduced distribution costs and lowered our carbon footprint.” As Slimming World was starting with a clean sheet it consulted Kevin White from Langley Mechanical Handling to assist with getting the best specifications all round for optimum performance from the 1,400m² purpose built warehouse. The choice of forklifts was obviously a key issue, and initial thoughts of a reach truck were discounted when Kevin demonstrated the advantages of the Aisle-Master. “We were won over by its FORK TRUCK NEWS versatility to work inside and out as well as the opportunity to save space,” says Paul. “Although we have ample pallet space at the moment we wanted to future proof our operations. The trucks’ ability to work in very narrow aisles means that even if growth continues at this rate we are assured of plenty of room.” The current pallet count of 1,600 is 30% up on what could have been achieved with reach trucks. The two AC electric powered trucks are the latest models to be developed by Aisle-Master’s parent company Combilift, featuring the new ergonomically improved cab and controls as well as “over articulation” which enables easy and accurate pallet placement when operating in extremely narrow aisles.
