NEWS REVIEWKICKZ AWARDSSHOWCASES COMMUNITY HEROES FROM THE COUNTRY’S MOST DEPRIVED AREASThe second ever Kickz Awards took place, featuring sometruly inspirational stories of teenagers, professionalfootball club coaches, police and local authority staff whohave gone over and above the call of duty to make theircommunities safer and transform young peoples’ lives.The high profile awards were held atWembley Stadium in front of keyfigures from the world of football,music and politics, such as TottenhamHotspur’s Tom Huddlestone, music act KidBritish, Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe MPand Schools Minister Vernon Coaker MP.Countering negative stereotypes, the eventshowcased the most inspiring young individualsthat have made a difference to their communityas part of the Kickz programme. Kickz has over30,000 registered participants aged 12-18 livingin tough areas, with high rates of anti-socialbehaviour. 39 professional football clubs fromthe Premier League and Football League aredelivering 110 projects in partnership with thePolice and local authorities across the country.Kickz uses the power of football to ‘build safer,stronger, more respectful communities throughthe development of young people’s potential’. Avariety of activities, including football, othersports, music, arts and developmental workshopson issues ranging from healthy lifestyles to thedangers of carrying weapons, are delivered threenights a week, all year round.Kickz projects have contributed to drops inanti-social behaviour of up to 60% and helpedequip the next generation with key employableskills which they otherwise would not have had.Kickz is so effective because it uses the power ofprofessional football clubs’ brands and becausethe sessions take place in the estates themselvesand at the times when there is effectively noprovision for young people. 91% of Kickz projectsinclude activities on a Friday or Saturday night,whereas just 4% of local authority provision foryoung people takes place on a Friday or Saturdaynight (and less than 1% on a Saturday night).The awards, organised by the FootballFoundation, Metropolitan Police and PremierLeague, also recognised the strong nationaland local partnerships that lie behind Kickz.Particular appreciation was given to those whodo an exceptional job in mentoring andinspiring young people, embedding theirproject in challenging communities.Kickz Club Achievement Award: Arsenal in theCommunity and Tottenham Hotspur Foundationwere singled out for special praise, with SunderlandAFC Foundation running out overall winners.Sunderland’s sessions were targeted in areas whichsuffered from high levels of crime, drug-use,teenage pregnancy and incidents of youth-relateddisorder and antisocial behaviour. Sunderland’s twoKickz projects have positively engaged 1,228 youngpeople with 142 going into education, employmentor other training. The community has benefited asthere has been a reduction in antisocial behaviour of49% in the Seaburn area and 26% in Chester-le-Street. In Chester-le-Street a former derelict shop haseven been turned into a state of the art Kickzbranded learning centre for young people toenhance their employment opportunities and seekhealthy lifestyle advice.Kickz Outstanding Police Contribution Awardfor London: Safer neighbourhood police staff are avery positive force behind schemes and thenominations for this category ranged from PCSO’swho have attended sessions on a regular basis andbuilt excellent relationships with participants, tosenior officers who have driven the developmentof projects behind the scenes, securing substantialamounts of funding to keep projects going. Fromthe Metropolitan Police, Inspector Penny Millsand PCSO Harmeet Ghataore were singled out fortheir work with Chelsea and Brentfordrespectively. Outside of London, InspectorStephen Hutchings from Hampshire Police andPCSO Amy Fleetham were honoured for theirwork with Portsmouth and Sunderland.Kickz Outstanding Personal AchievementAward: This category’s awards were won by GeorgeKing (Millwall Kickz), 16, from Sydenham andStephanie North, 17, from Openshaw (ManchesterCity Kickz). After being asked to ‘take early studyleave’ by his school as he seemed to have ‘given up’,George turned his life around through Kickz,achieving the FA Level 1 coaching badge, NVQLevel 2 course in Activity Leadership andvolunteering 12 hours a week throughout thesummer to help on Millwall’s Disability Programme.He has gone onto become a very promising sportscoach and role model to other young people.Kickz was born out of discussions betweenthe Metropolitan Police and Premier Leaguewho, along with the Football Foundation, are theprimary national partners. The Association ofChief Police Officers (ACPO) are also involvedin order to represent the interests of otherconstabularies around the country. 17 otherforces are involved in the programme nationally.Other partners who have made significantcontributions to the development of the Kickzprogramme in funding and/or expertise in theirrespective specialist areas, include theDepartment for Culture Media and Sport(DCMS), v (The national youth volunteering alsocharity), the Brit Trust , the Home Office, The FAand the Football League Trust. Formal links havealso developed with Nike and the GreaterLondon Authority (GLA), and Kickz is also anofficial charity partner of Wembley Stadium.Minister for Sport Gerry Sutcliffe said:“Kickz is a fantastic success story. It shows thepower that football has to connect with youngpeople and has helped improve the lives ofthousands, building stronger communities insome of the country’s most deprived areas.“As well as giving young people opportunitiesto play sport, Kickz has helped them realise theirpotential in other fields, such as music and the arts.“The Kickz Awards are a great celebrationof these many successes.
