Insulation Monitoring on Ungrounded Systems
Ungrounded systems onboard ships and offshore platforms are continuously monitored
by a BENDER ground detector. Connected between the active conductors and
ground (the hull), the detector superimposes a small measuring voltage onto the
system. If a ground fault occurs, the measuring circuit is closed and a small measauring
current will flow. The measuring current is proportional to the insulation resistance
(the magnitude of the ground fault), and is evaluated by the detector.
BENDER ground detectors employ the latest in detection technology, including the following:
DC measuring voltage
A frequently used measuring principle is
the superimposition of a DC measuring
voltage between the system and ground.
This is the standard measuring principle for
pure AC ungrounded systems, both single-
and three-phase.
AMP measuring principle
BENDER's AMP measuring principle overcomes
the limitations of DC measuring
signals by superimposing a clocked, pulsed
measuring voltage onto the system. The
signal is microprocessor controlled to
automatically adapt itself to prevailing
system conditions, such as high leakage
capacitances. This signal is ideal for toda'ys
modern power distribution systems that
include: Pure DC systems, systems with a
mix of AC and DC (including rectifiers), and
systems with variable frequency drives
(VFDs).
Ground Fault Location for Ungrounded Systems
BENDER‘s complete ground fault location
system helps increase the reliability of
your system, reduce costs, and create predictive
maintenance by locating ground
faults quickly and easily. The EDS series
extends the capabilities of the IRDH575
ground detector to not only know that
there is a problem, but to find it as well.
EDS series location modules assist in
automating the process of finding faults
by connecting to subfeeders or loads
and providing notification when a fault
has been located. Remote indicators also
work in conjunction with this system to
notify nurse and technical stations quickly
when a problem has occured. Remote
communication solutions allow personnel
in main stations to know when a problem
has occured in real-time.
Advantages of ground fault location with the EDS series
Improved economic
efficiency
n Time and costs for maintenance
are re duced
n Weak points in the installation
Monitoring Grounded and HRG Circuits
RCMS series devices are multi-channel ground fault location
modules which can monitor up to 12 separate circuits /
branches per device. Multiple devices may be interconnected
to each other to increase this amount. RCMS devices are
designed for use on grounded and high-resistance grounded
systems. RCMS modules are also compatible with BENDER's
communication system, to provide remote notification to
technicians in the event of an alarm.
Typical applications include any equipment that is solidly or
resistance grounded. On ships, this may include entertainment
areas, and cabins. On offshore platforms, this may include
topside equipment, such as motors.
Communication solutions
BENDER‘s line of communication products allow for fast
notification of personnel when a problem has occured. Critical
systems monitored by BENDER equipment may be connected
to a variety of remote indicators to notify personnel of the
current status of the system. Communication gateways bring
your electrical safety network into the 21st century by displaying
system information via several standard protocols, such
