<strong>UMBC</strong>’s Visual Arts Imag<strong>in</strong>g Research<br />

Center Fellows participated<br />

<strong>in</strong> two performances with the<br />

Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra<br />

this past Sunday. <strong>The</strong> visual arts<br />

<strong>student</strong>s entered a competition <strong>in</strong><br />

which they created a video that<br />

accompanied a fi ve-m<strong>in</strong>ute contemporary<br />

viol<strong>in</strong> composition. <strong>The</strong><br />

piece, entitled “Try to Believe,” was<br />

written by Randall Woolf and is a<br />

sprightly, surreal song. <strong>The</strong> video<br />

was screened dur<strong>in</strong>g two performances<br />

by the Orchestra <strong>in</strong> New<br />

York City.<br />

For the fi rst month and a half of<br />

the project, start<strong>in</strong>g at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of this semester, the ten <strong>student</strong>s<br />

worked tirelessly to create no<br />

less than thirty of these sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sculptures, called “c<strong>in</strong>etropes.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>n, fi lm<strong>in</strong>g and edit<strong>in</strong>g had to<br />

be done before the <strong>dead</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e of<br />

March 7th. <strong>The</strong> contest was held<br />

over youtube.com and everyone<br />

watched and waited to see how<br />

the Fellows’ submission would fare<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the n<strong>in</strong>e other candidates<br />

for the competition. <strong>The</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ner<br />

was clear only days after submissions<br />

had closed s<strong>in</strong>ce the Fellows’<br />

“Try to Believe” had earned more<br />

views and a one star lead on any of<br />

the other contributors. On Friday,<br />

April 18, the offi cial results were<br />

announced with the <strong>UMBC</strong> IRC<br />

Fellows as the w<strong>in</strong>ners of the “Believe<br />

You Can W<strong>in</strong>” contest.<br />

<strong>The</strong> IRC <strong>student</strong>s created more<br />

than 28 paper, foam core, and<br />

mixed media sculptures that they<br />

then used <strong>in</strong> the video, result<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> “live” animation. <strong>The</strong> animation<br />

was <strong>in</strong>fl uenced by the concept of<br />

the zoetrope, a pre-c<strong>in</strong>ema optical<br />

toy. <strong>The</strong> animation shows a girl, a<br />

modern-day “Alice,” walk<strong>in</strong>g down<br />

a street, and this is juxtaposed with<br />

high-paced kaleidoscopic images.<br />

<strong>The</strong> bright colors and quick changes<br />

result <strong>in</strong> a video that is erratic<br />

and jarr<strong>in</strong>g, perfectly exemplify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the music.<br />

“<strong>The</strong> IRC Fellows ran with this<br />

project from the start and they<br />

poured an enormous amount of<br />

smart creativity and enthusiasm<br />

<strong>in</strong>to it,” said Professor Eric Dyer,<br />

who taught the IRC Fellows Program<br />

this semester. “<strong>The</strong> public<br />

presentation of their video <strong>in</strong><br />

New York City is a well-deserved<br />

award.”<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the presentation on Sunday,<br />

a representative of the Philharmonic<br />

then enthusiastically <strong>in</strong>troduced<br />

the Fellows, say<strong>in</strong>g “our<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ners are actually here from Baltimore,”<br />

emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g “Baltimore”<br />

as if it were surpris<strong>in</strong>g, but then<br />

followed that by say<strong>in</strong>g that their<br />

work had “surpassed any of the<br />

our [the Philharmonic’s and Randall<br />

Woolf’s] expectations” for the<br />

contest. <strong>The</strong> Fellows rose and were<br />

recognized before viol<strong>in</strong>ist Jennifer<br />

Choi took the stage to perform the<br />

viol<strong>in</strong> solo to accompany the prerecorded<br />

digital track. Follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the performance, the Fellows were<br />

asked to stand aga<strong>in</strong> to great applause<br />

from the small crowd at the<br />

Brooklyn Museum.<br />

<strong>The</strong> IRC Fellows Program is a<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ar-style course that br<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

together art majors who display<br />

exceptional talent <strong>in</strong> their fi rst two<br />

years as undergraduates. <strong>The</strong> small<br />

class works on projects and focuses<br />

on emerg<strong>in</strong>g technologies and media<br />

criticism.<br />

<strong>The</strong> IRC Fellows will perform<br />

the animations live on May 13 at<br />

the Baltimore Creative Alliance.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y will be accompanied by viol<strong>in</strong>ist<br />

Mart<strong>in</strong> Shultz of the Peabody<br />

Conservatory.<br />

She Stoops<br />

conquers hearts<br />

<strong>The</strong> theater department’s production<br />

of Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to<br />

Conquer proved to be a hilarious, fl ashy<br />

frolic, <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g highly fashionable gentlemen,<br />

mistaken identities, an overbear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

mother, alternat<strong>in</strong>g shyness and<br />

lechery, an <strong>in</strong>heritance, and of course,<br />

lots of love and a happy end<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Young Charles Marlow (Kev<strong>in</strong> James)<br />

is meant to pick a wife <strong>in</strong> Kate Hardcastle<br />

(Daphne Gardner), but is crippl<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

shy around women of a higher class,<br />

though very forward among women<br />

he perceives to be of a lower class.<br />

Tony Lumpk<strong>in</strong> (Michael Houk) plays a<br />

trick on Marlow and his friend, George<br />

Hast<strong>in</strong>gs (Travis Hudson), by direct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

them to Hardcastle’s manor while<br />

call<strong>in</strong>g it an <strong>in</strong>n. At the “<strong>in</strong>n,” Marlow<br />

meets Kate, and although he is mortifi<br />

ed with shyness dur<strong>in</strong>g the meet<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

she is enamored with him. In order to<br />

get through Marlow’s shy exterior, Kate<br />

pretends to be the <strong>in</strong>n’s barmaid around<br />

Marlow, and is thoroughly fl irted with.<br />

<strong>The</strong> sub-plot is about love between<br />

the foppish Hast<strong>in</strong>gs and Miss Neville<br />

(Barbara Madison Hauck), who is<br />

Kate’s cous<strong>in</strong>. Tony Lumpk<strong>in</strong>’s pranks<br />

and mischief tie it all together, while<br />

Mrs. Hardcastle’s (Kelly Cavanaugh)<br />

efforts create more and more obstructions.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, the benevolent fathers,<br />

Mr. Hardcastle (Alexander Scally) and<br />

Sir Marlow (Mikey Cafarelli), create a<br />

happy end<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>The</strong> act<strong>in</strong>g was solid; James’s shyanguish<br />

and fl irtation drew endearment<br />

and laughs, and so did Gardner’s<br />

quickness, Scally’s objections (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at be<strong>in</strong>g ordered to fetch some<br />

warm punch for the gentlemen), and<br />

Cavanaugh’s rage as she crawled upon<br />

the stage, dress torn. Houk owns his<br />

big p<strong>in</strong>k wig and makeup, reel<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

stagger<strong>in</strong>g while deliver<strong>in</strong>g antic after<br />

antic. <strong>The</strong> Hast<strong>in</strong>gs-Neville affair drew<br />

plenty of laughs and “awws” through<br />

Hudson and Hauck’s great performances;<br />

he showed his love-long<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

even sang away his desire for a quick<br />

elopement, but she couldn’t leave beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

her <strong>in</strong>heritance, and dragged her<br />

lover back <strong>in</strong> time for everyth<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

fall orderly <strong>in</strong>to place. <strong>The</strong> maids and<br />

servants, played by Samantha Nelson,<br />

Nik Diener, Partick Letterii and Kev<strong>in</strong><br />

Driscoll, did a great job as well, from<br />

depict<strong>in</strong>g a proper militia stance, to<br />

pass<strong>in</strong>g out drunk.<br />

Rather than choose the very familiar<br />

Ye-Olde-18th-century-England<br />

details, the production gave a new<br />

fl are by show<strong>in</strong>g exaggerated, strik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

costumes: ruffl es and spheres<br />

of silk and taffeta, generous amounts<br />

of makeup, high heels, and glitter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

jewels adorned the ma<strong>in</strong> characters,<br />

more the men than the women. <strong>The</strong> female<br />

characters wore dresses that were<br />

spherical below the waist, kept round<br />

by hoops, and narrowed around the feet<br />

<strong>in</strong> a small circle. When they had to walk<br />

they would skip about <strong>in</strong> quick, giggle<strong>in</strong>duc<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

m<strong>in</strong>i-steps. <strong>The</strong> stage cleverly<br />

used lift<strong>in</strong>g discs to switch from manor,<br />

to tavern, to nighttime garden. However,<br />

the disc, once erected, rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

somewhat slanted, which kept mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

me th<strong>in</strong>k that it was go<strong>in</strong>g to fall and<br />

crush the actors. Fortunately, noth<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

the sort happened.<br />

If you missed it--well, then, sir, or<br />

madam, you missed a jolly “toroddle,<br />

toroddle, toroll,” some tiff-taff-taffety<br />

cream, the little star on Hudson’s<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>ted cheek, and a fortune (of a play)<br />

chiefl y consist<strong>in</strong>g of jewels: for shame,<br />

pshaw, pshaw!<br />
