Baseball wins four
straight in sweep of
Hartford

As long as UMBC has had a baseball
team, 41 years, the team has never
sweep a four game series until this past
weekend. Earlier in the year UMBC
sweep their fi rst ever series which was
against Navy, which was a two game series,
but this weekend Hartford fell four
times to UMBC. “We’re doing better at
everything right now. We have a solid
nucleus of offense but we’re playing very
good defense and pitching we well with
good command which is key said head
coach John Jancuska.”
Game one of the series was a slugfest
that in the end favored UMBC. Dan
Blewett started the game on the mound,
though he did not pitch great as he gave
up six runs to fall behind 6-1 after four
innings. He fi nally got some run support
as UMBC matched the six runs to get the
lead back.
Austin Drewyer came into the game
with a 9-8 lead in the six and gave up
just one run to close out the game for
the win. Shawn Retz hit is fi rst home
run and he also contributed four RBIs
and 12 player outs. Also, Joe Fowler
went 2-4 with three runs and 4 RBIs.
One of his hits was his sixth home run
of the season. Rich Conlon hit his fi rst
collegiate home run in the game too and
Steve Russo had a solo home run. “It’s
a little overdue but I just had to wait for
it to happen but I wasn’t trying to hit it
said Retz.” In game two of the series Ed
Bach started and looked to be his old
self. He struggles his last few appearances
but he gave up one earned run,
three total in 6.1 innings. Dave Divita
got the win though with non runs given
up in 2.2 innings of work. The game was
tied after the fi fth inning and stayed that
way until the ninth inning, the game
was a seven inning double header game,
when UMBC tallied two runs to get the
5-3 win.
With the fi rst two games ending in
UMBC’s favor the team looked to win its
fi rst four game series as they sent Will
Delawter to the mound, Delawter was
hot from the mound going into the game
as he pitched very well his last two appearances
before this game. He looked
good again in this game as in six innings
he recorded eight strikeouts and only
allowed two runs. R.J. Morse came in
for his fourth save after Delawter’s performance.
“Will is a special competitor.
He is still not 100% because of his knee
surgery in the summer but he’s playing
well. He’s a presence in the batters box
because of his power and high average
but on the mound when he gets his
breaking ball going he is tough to hit
said Jancuska.”
In the game Fowler recorded
his second home run of the series and
Wink Nolan seconded his third double,
one in each game, and his second triple.
In the fi nal game of the series UMBC
looked to do something they never did
in UMBC baseball history: sweep a four
game series ad that is what they did.
Last week Divita pitched his best game
of the season and this week he followed
up with another phenomenal outing. In
six innings he gave up just seven hits
and four runs. When he came out of the
game after giving up two runs early in
the seventh round he had a 7-4 lead but
Drewyer gave up three runs to tied the
game. Luckily UMBC got one run in the
tenth and held on for the win.
In the tenth inning, Delawter was the
fi rst Retriever at bat and he delivered. He
hit a homerun to give UMBC the eventual
winning run. Also Steve Russo hit a
home run in the game four his third of
the season and second of the series.
“It is always about pitching and I am
confi dent that our pitchers are ready
and should be able to compete against
Albany said Jancuska.”
With the win UMBC has improved
to a 16-23 record and most importantly
8-8 in the conference, third place and
three games behind Stony Brook with a
four game series still to go with them.
UMBC has eleven games left in the regular
season and needs to win nine to go
.500 in the regular season.

Relay teams improve at Penn State Relays

SENIOR STAFF WRITER
This weekend’s meet was different
than a normal meet as both track
and fi eld teams competed in a total
of eight events. The men’s team
competed in three and the women’s
in fi ve. In the Penn State relays the
teams improved though.
“The women’s team improved
and obviously we would like
them and hope that they continue to
get better at the rate they have before
we go to the NCAA championship
meet head coach David Bobb.”
The women’s 4x100 meter relay
team consisting of Tierra Gregory,
Tawana Wilson, Jennifer Kalkstein,
and Britney Forman fi nished sixth
overall with a time of 48.33, just
.01 seconds away from the school
record.
“The Penn State relays is
the biggest event on the east coast,
there are 300 colleges and 500 high
schools competing. It is very good
in a lot of ways because we get to
see recruits and our athletes can
see Olympians compete right before
their own eyes.”
Another season best relay time for
the women’s team came in the 4x400
meter relay consisting of Tierra
Gregory, Wilson, Kalkstein, and Kierra
Gregory with a time of 3:59.82.
Also competing in non relay events
were Ashley Hyland in the 5000
meter run. She fi nished 23rd with a
time of 17:31.55, Suzie Richards also
competed and fi nished 30th with a
time of 17:55.62.

recorded his 700th at bat, the most in
UMBC history.
Next the baseball team has fi ve home
games this week including a game against
Ashley Fauntleroy also had an
impressive outing in shot put with
a distance of 13.80 meters, good for
a seventh place fi nish, and Rachelle
Wright fi nished 15th with a 12.83
throw.
The Men’s team only
competed in three events, all being
relays. The team started off in
the 4x800 meter relay with a team
of Josh Okoniewski, Chris Snyder,
Michael Christmas, and Chris Hart.
The team fi nished 21st with a time
of 7:46.85
In the 4x100 meter relay Mohamed
Koroma, Adrian Arthur, Brian Pendleton,
and Antonio Thomas fi nished
51st with a time of 42.25. Finally in
the 4x400 meter relay Koroma, Marcus
Dickerson, Thomas, and Jimmy
Mildenberg fi nished 54th with a
Towson and a four game series against
reigning AEC champions, Albany.

Next the track and fi eld
team will be running in the America
east Championship meet on May
3-4.
