Junior Meyerhoff Scholar Jamie
Heard was found dead in his Erickson
Hall dorm room Sunday morning,
according to UMBC police.
An undergraduate student pursuing
a bachelor’s degree in Biological
Sciences, Heard died in his sleep. He
was 21.
“He always said ‘life is beautiful,’”
said Amara Bukhari, one of Heard’s
close friends. “He was just the type
of person that it didn’t matter what
you did, he liked you.”
A candlelight vigil will be held
Thursday, May 1 from 7 p.m. to midnight
on Erickson Field. The theme
of the vigil is “Start Monkeying
Around for Jamie.” The theme comes
from a running joke among friends
that Heard, who always carried fruit
in his pockets, was the “best looking
monkey” they’d ever meet.
Heard was discovered in bed by
his roommates at noon on Sunday
morning. The students called the Erickson
Hall front desk, which alerted
police, when Heard was found unre-
sponsive.
According to UMBC Chief of Police
Antonio Williams, Baltimore County
police and paramedics were immediately
notifi ed of the situation. Williams
said that UMBC police “take
more or less a secondary or support
roll” in the investigation of a death
on campus. Heard was pronounced
dead on the scene.
Heard was diabetic, and though
no offi cial cause of death has been
released, friends said Heard was in a
constant battle to control his illness.
Earlier this year, police and paramedics
were summoned when Heard
was found seizing in his Erickson
dorm room.
“The one thing he said he was
afraid of was going to sleep and
not waking up,” said a teary-eyed
Bukhari, watching videos of Heard
with friends on her laptop in the
Academic Services building conference
room.
Bukhari and Abraham Khan, who
both attended school at Suitland
High in Prince George’s County with
Heard, said that the three were more
like family than friends.
“I still remember the fi rst time I
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, BALTIMORE COUNTY’S STUDENT NEWSPAPER
met him,” said Khan. Heard moved
to Maryland from Seattle, Wash. and,
according to Khan, immediately fi t
in. “He just walked up to me, shook
my hand and said ‘Hi, I’m Jamie. I’m
new here.’”
“Seeing him was always the brightest
part of my day,” he said.
Friends said that Heard could
“make a stranger feel like a best
friend,” and that he dressed up for
class every day. It was on one such
day that Tamara Nicholls, Heard’s
girlfriend, “fell in love immediately.”
“[Heard was] simply a wonderful
soul with limitless capabilities,”
Nicholls said.
The junior was an active member
of the UMBC community. According
to an e-mail sent out to the campus
by Interim Vice President of Student
Affairs Nancy Young, Heard worked
as a Welcome Week Woolie, Residential
Life staff member, and played
recreational soccer.
He also had a passion for reading,
playing the piano, and writing poetry.
Low voter
Steven Gilmore may have been
elected the new Student Government
Association president, but who
at UMBC actually voted him in?
According to statistics released by
the SGA Election Board immediately
following the announcement that
Gilmore had beaten out Michael
“Steelwolf” Comberiate, only 1,844
undergraduates (19.5 percent of
UMBC’s student population) voted
in this year’s election. The number
is down from last year’s vote total
of 2,180, which constituted 23.2
percent of the student population.
UMBC enrolls 9,464 undergraduate
students, according to collegeboard.
com.
Current SGA president Jay Lagorio,
for one, was surprised at the
lower turnout. “The election board
did a much better job, in my opinion,
of publicizing it [the election]
this year,” he said.
Gilmore, who garnered 55.4 percent
of the popular vote, says the low
voter turnout compared to the 2007
elections can be easily explained.
Jake Steel, Marina Haddad, James
Valentine, and Lagorio ran for offi ce
in the 2007 elections. After current
SGA vice president Elani Odeyale
abruptly dropped out of the race in
early April, only Gilmore and Comberiate
were left to battle for the SGA’s
top job in 2008. The fewer number
of candidates, according to Gilmore,
is why the voter turnout was lower
this time around.
“Last year, you had people coming
out to vote for four different candidates,”
the junior music education
major said in a telephone conversation.
“This year there were only
two.”
Despite the low percentage of
students voting, Gilmore called the
showing “still a pretty good number,”
and said that receiving almost
1,000 (actually 989) votes gives him
confi dence that the student body is
One thing in Germany that I have
had to perfect, besides my German, is
my patience. Ask my mother; I was
not born the most patient of young
ladies. It seems that this country is
trying to teach me that virtue.
Let's talk about stoplights. In
America, as soon as traffi c starts to
slow down, you cross the street, preempting
the change of the little man
from red to green. It makes sense;
you save time and will probably even
be able to cross the next street before
traffi c starts fl owing again.
You would think that Germans and
their obsession with punctuality and
effi ciency would help them appreciate
the 20 seconds saved by a minor case
of jaywalking. This is not the case.
Instead, I am forced to stand in awkward
anticipation for the rest of the
crowd to cross the road, even though
there are no cars in sight. On the several
occasions that I have ignored the
little red man and the waiting crowd
of obedient Germans, I have received
such stares of distaste and rebuke to
frighten me enough to obey the law.
Besides, my law-abiding friends are
still on the other side of the road and
I have gained nothing because in the
end, I still have to wait for them.
Let's talk about university courses.
On my schedule it says that history
starts at 9 a.m., so I get there ten
minutes early. To some Germans, if
you are not fi ve minutes early then
you are late. I can respect that, so I
arrive early, especially on the fi rst day
of class. I am alone in the classroom
for 20 minutes. I start to worry that I
am in the wrong room, that an email
was sent and I was the only one who
didn't get it, or that I failed to understand
what the email said. I start
biting my fi ngernails. Then other students
start coming in and I ask if they
are all there for the same class that I
am. They are, phew.
Apparently, for some classes in
Germany it is implied that, even
though the schedule says 9-11, it really
means 9:15-10:45. Who knew?
But what keeps me on my toes is that
all of my classes are not on that weird
schedule. So, I arrive on (American)
time for each class. And usually end
up sitting by myself, wishing I had remembered
that I could have slept for
15 more minutes that morning.
Let's talk about actually speaking
German. I am sure that it requires a
lot of patience for the people listening
to me stutter my pre-thought-out
phrases. My teachers must be saints.
But I get so impatient when I am trying
to make a point in class. I have
In continuation from last week,
we arrive at the mountain where we
are about to go cave diving. Now, we
get here expecting to see the cave entrance
and walk inside, but oh no! We
actually have to walk up the mountain
in front of us in order to get to
the entrance of the cave. So we start
hiking.
At fi rst, it is fl at and mild, slowly
winding up the hill. Claire and I, relieved
at the minimal amount of effort,
start saying things like, “Well this
sure isn't bad!” or “I'm not sweating a
bit! I don´t need this extra shirt!” At
one point, we actually have to get on
our hands and knees to crawl under
a barbed wire fence, which we think
is pretty hard! Then we trek through
mud up to our shins, so it’s a good
thing we wore hiking boots like the
other guys with us—oh wait, we
didn't!
So, two kilometers later, we’re sure
we are there because we are at the
base of another mountain, and sweat-
language, but it is also time consuming
and frustrating.
After two months of waiting to
cross the street, waiting for class to
start, or waiting to be able to utter a
complete sentence, I am starting to
feel O.K. moving at a slower pace. If
ing like crazy. Now, I have a bone to
pick with whoever created caves at
the tops of mountains, because we
literally have to now climb vertically
up a rocky mountainside in order to
get to this damn cave. Just picture fi ve
girls in space suits with muddy Keds
on, clinging to the side of a mountain
without ropes or anything. The bachelor
party goes ahead of us climbing
like spider-men, and there’s one guide
behind us to catch us before we fall to
our death.
So we literally grab onto anything
we can to pull ourselves up this
mountain. We are sweating through
our shirts--thanks Juan--and I unfortunately
have Julie in front of me.
We latch onto anything we can to get
higher up the mountainside: a branch,
some grass, prickly roots sticking out,
thorn bushes, the leg of a passing
mountain goat... Julie rips her pants
in the butt, right in front of my face!
This is going so well.
Twenty-three years later, we get
to the top. Everyone else is sitting
crumpets because the Americans
while outside of the RAC a boy had
pulled down his pants and exposed
the students thanked the university for
creating resources that facilitate undergraduate
research. Most presenters agree
that the day was a great opportunity.
“It is great to have the opportunity
to present your research and learn from
other students,” Simran Noor, a presenter,
said.
“It is really great! I never imagined that
I would be doing research or presenting
here like this as an undergraduate,” Audrey
Hillman said.
The research is often made possible
due to grants and funding available to
the students. Janet McGlynn, who is also
the Director of Communication and Outreach
at the university, explained some of
the ways that undergraduate research is
funded:
• The Undergraduate Research Award
is granted to about 30 students annually.
• Students in the sciences frequently
fi nd research opportunities in faculty
labs and tap into to the faculty research
funding.
• Quite a few researchers are funded
by the Undergraduate Scholars Program,
the National Institute of Health, state
grants and by alternate sources such as
the Maryland Cancer Research Fund.
• Various summer programs pay students
to conduct research.
• Some of the research can be conducted
without specifi c funding by using
the university library resources.
Getting started in research is simple,
according to McGlynn. Although, often
faculty will recommend a student for
URCAD, students can self-nominate as
well. Detailed information is available
through the OUE website.
“Each of the 130 student presenters at
URCAD was recommended by a faculty
mentor, demonstrating the support and
encouragement faculty members give to
students,” McGlynn said about this year’s
event.
At the start of summer, Americans
begin to shed their pasty dry winter
skin for that shimmering bronze glow.
In their quest for the “ideal glow,”
many turn to artifi cial indoor tanning
to build a “base tan” to further infuse
their skin cells with melanin.
With an annual customer base of 28
million Americans, the two billion dollar-a-year
tanning industry expanding
rapidly. Indoor tanning is especially
popular among adolescents and young
adults aged 18-30.
Despite the lobbying efforts by state
and federal physician groups, the FDA
has placed minimal regulations on the
tanning industry. Thus, the tanning
industry has been able to grow and
prosper. The unrestricted and accelerated
growth of the tanning industry
combined with a paucity of studies
concerning the long-term effects may
spell disastrous consequences for the
future.
Melanin is a pigment that is released
in response to ultraviolet radiation exposure
in order to protect the nuclear
DNA within a cell. The ionizing radiation
of UV light can wreak havoc on
a cell’s DNA and produce harmful genetic
mutations that manifest as malignant
skin cancers. However, the innate
safeguard afforded by melanin is not
completely effective and high levels of
ultraviolet radiation can still penetrate
into the nucleus.
The tanning industry has vigorously
touted the perceived health benefi ts of
UV radiation exposure. UV light is an
essential ingredient in the synthesis of
endogenous vitamin D by the body.
Although vitamin D can be obtained
from a variety of foods, such as fi sh or
milk, the body is especially adept at
producing large quantities of vitamin
D when exposed to sunlight. It is for
this reason that ethnic groups with
large amounts of melanin pigmentation,
such as those who live near the
equator, have a lower incidence of malignant
carcinomas but a higher incidence
of vitamin D defi ciency. Recent
studies have shown that vitamin D has
signifi cant anti-cancer properties and
can ward off debilitating conditions
such as osteoporosis.
The tanning industry has alleged
that indoor tanning stimulates vitamin
D synthesis while controlling the
amount of UV exposure. In addition,
tanning salons have argued that indoor
tanning beds are safer than typical
sun exposure because they limit the
amount of UVB (notoriously known as
the “burning ray") exposure, which is
generally unpredictable with sunlight.
However, a study of salons in North
Carolina revealed that the average
tanning salon exceeded FDA recommended
levels of UV exposure by 95
percent. Furthermore, the tanning industry
has repeatedly stated that since
indoor tanning is more controlled, a
person can reduce their risk of burning.
However, studies have shown that
melanin synthesis is induced by DNA
damage. In other words, the act of tanning
is essentially a response to DNA
damage.
Physician groups have staunchly
opposed the salubrious claims by the
tanning industry with a multitude
of studies. A 1994 study of Swedish
women aged 18-30 who frequented
a tanning salon 10 or more times per
year increased their risk of melanoma
seven-fold compared to woman who
never frequented tanning salons.
Furthermore, a Dartmouth Medical
School study found that those who
use tanning beds increase their risk
for squamous cell carcinoma by 2.5
times and basal cell carcinoma by 1.5
times. According to The Skin Cancer
Foundation, people who have participated
in 10 or more full-body tanning
sessions have the same level of skin-repairing
proteins typically seen in sundamaged
skin, thus weakening the argument
stating that tanning beds emit
less damaging ultraviolet radiation.
Although physicians agree that vitamin
D can have potentially life-saving
qualities, they urge patients to obtain it
through less damaging methods.
Despite the consensus in the scientifi
c world concerning the benefi ts of
vitamin D, there remains some disagreement
upon the minimum amount
needed to see signifi cant reduction in
cancer and the best method to obtain
it. While the current RDA (recommend
daily allowance) of vitamin D as set
forth by the FDA is 200 international
units per day up to age 50, some scientists
believe somewhere between 1,000
IU’s to 1,500 IU’s per day are necessary
Changes reduce footprint of
PAHF building in planning stage
Elizabeth Silberholz
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
Some signifi cant changes have been
made to plans for the $1.4 million Performing
Arts and Humanities Facility
(PAHF) since last year’s community forum.
Most notably, the building’s footprint
has been reduced and the facility
might become environmentally certifi ed.
The project is slightly behind schedule
following a signifi cant fl oor plan reduction.
To get back on schedule, the architectural
team has been asked to shorten
upcoming project phases, according to
Joe Rexing, UMBC’s Associate Director
of Planning and Construction Services.
However, he said, “The project is progressing
well.”
Though the governor’s proposed budget
includes multiple installments of the
$1.4 million, UMBC has not seen any
money yet.
The building will be constructed
in two phases because of this funding
method. One of the architects on the
project said: “It is a long and complex
[construction] schedule.”
Environmental Dedication
Since Grimm & Parker Architects
are dedicated to environmental design,
they currently plan to have the building
Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) certifi ed. As of last year’s
community forum, this was not a level
of environmental commitment that the
architects were considering.
If funding is available, Rexing indicated
that the university will seek a silver
LEED certifi cation level.
Some of the building’s environmental
features include natural lighting, a cistern
to collect runoff, and a greenway complete
with smaller outdoor areas which
can be used for relaxing or teaching.
Active Interior
The architect’s plan for the building is
that it will “celebrate innovation right at
the leading edge of campus.” The PAHF’s
central spine will run parallel to Academic
Row. The building’s two performing
areas will be located at opposite ends
of this spine, while the Drescher Center
overlooks the building’s interior from the
second fl oor.
Since the architects “have a real concern
with…dead lobby syndrome,” each
space will be given multiple uses to “activate”
it.
The architects are currently working
with the departments of Ancient Studies,
Dance, English, Music, Philosophy,
and Theatre as well the three centers that
will be housed in the PAHF to discuss
each group’s placement in the building
and help them understand their planned
spaces.
The English department, due to its
large size, will be split over two fl oors.
Rexing said that they are “working
closely with the architects to create the
ideal setting for their large department.”
He pointed out that departments such
as the biology, chemistry, and physics
span multiple fl oors or even fi ll an entire
building.
English department chair Jessica Berman
was disappointed that the department
has been divided in the latest fl oor
plans. However, she noted, “The architects…have
worked with me on developing
ways to create department spaces
that build community. We will have an
open stairway between our fl oors which
will encourage faculty and students to
move up and down, and other areas
where we can gather.” Berman was hopeful
that these plans will work out. “It certainly
will be better than the space now,”
she said.
The PAHF will also have many general-use
classrooms, conference rooms,
and even a café area on the fi rst fl oor.
Parking Problems
The PAHF is charted to be built where
parking lots 16 and 9 currently stand.
Grimm & Parker architects commented
that building on parking lots is part of a
university’s natural growth.
UMBC is currently investigating ways
to replace the two displaced parking areas.
“A parking planning study is currently
underway to assess parking needs and
to recommend solutions," Rexing said.
"Numerous student groups supported
this study effort by participating in an allday
survey to count parked cars across
campus.”
It has been recommended that the
Fine Arts building be renovated after
the PAHF is built. The building would
unite scattered parts of the College of
Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to
become the Global and Cultural Studies
building.
the SGA. Still, Gilmore admits that
there is work to be done in getting
students to come out to the polls.
“It’s a big challenge,” Gilmore said.
“Students don’t think it’s a worthwhile
investment [to vote]. People
ask ‘why will you be different?’”
Part of the problem in getting students
to believe their vote matters
is the feeling among some that the
election is a popularity contest. Going
back to the 2004 SGA elections,
Gilmore is the fi fth consecutive member
of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity to
be elected president, after Dom Cirincione,
Jordan Hadfi eld (twice), and
Lagorio. Carrie Mann, who inherited
the presidency in January 2007 after
Hadfi eld resigned mid-year, is the
only exception to the Pi Kappa Phi
trend. According to Gilmore, however,
the recent winning streak for
his fraternity is coincidence, and the
election is “more about being wellconnected
than being popular.”
“I’ve been involved with the SGA
since my freshman year. For the most
part, people voted for me because
they’ve seen me around,” Gilmore,
who is closing out his term as the
Speaker of the Senate, said. “Campaigning
starts when you fi rst get to
UMBC. I’ve been involved, and I’ve
contacted as many student organizations
as possible. I introduce myself,
and it’s more than just an e-mail. It’s
a real person in front of you.”
Visibility and a track record,
Gilmore says, is what gave him the
victory – not his popularity.
“Ultimately, we had a good bal-
to signifi cantly reduce cancer risk.
Although vitamin D can be obtained
from foods such as fi sh, leafy greens,
and fortifi ed milk, the quantities recommended
by scientists are diffi cult to
obtain through diet alone. Vitamin D-3
supplement pills are available but may
cause a dangerous buildup of calcium
in the body if more than 2,000 IU’s a
day are consumed.
To promote the anti-cancer benefi ts
of vitamin D without subverting health
warnings about unprotected sun exposure,
some scientists have proposed a
level of “safe” sun exposure for 15 minutes
a day without sunscreen, which
blocks the UV light needed for vitamin
D synthesis. Those with a darker pigmentation
should expose themselves
for a little longer to compensate for
the degree of UV blocked by the melanin.
Nevertheless, the jury is still out
on this one and all scientifi c evidence
should be evaluated with scrutiny.
ance,” Gilmore said. “We [he and
running mate Tokunbo “Toks”
Elegbe] didn’t just rely on people we
knew.”
Though some may be dismayed
that the new SGA president was
chosen by less than a quarter of the
undergraduate enrollment at UMBC,
Lagorio says that Gilmore is the right
man for the job.
“You can’t make everybody happy,
but you have to make the right decisions,”
Lagorio said. “Steve is good at
that. He knows how to do what’s best
for the most people.”
Gilmore will take his new post on
May 15 at 5:01 p.m., but work starts
now for the president-elect as he prepares
to take the SGA reigns for the
“I’ll start getting in contact with
Losing our spirit bit by bit
With the basketball season over, UMBC once again stopped caring about
A government plan for responsible drinking
Isn’t it a little odd that we live in
a nation where a man or woman can
be old enough to go to war, yet not
old enough to enjoy a beer?
It’s this kind of backward circumstance
that is inspiring some people
and organizations to reopen the
debate on lowering the minimum
drinking age. And while the action
has always proved futile time
and time again because of MADD
(Mothers Against Drunk Driving)’s
efficient campaigning, I can’t help
but feel that there is reform in the
air.
In all 50 of the United States, it
is illegal to purchase or consume
alcohol before the age of 21, but
this was not always the norm. Before
an extensive lobbying effort
by MADD during the 1980’s, each
state was free to decide what was
best for their residents in regards
to the alcoholic consumption age.
States are still allowed to choose
their own minimum drinking age,
but it comes at a cost if the age they
select is lower than 21. States who
fail to uphold the 21 age minimum
I am glad that Sodexho is leaving. This morning I went to the Spot for an early breakfast, only to discover that not only was the place
experiencing an apocalyptic dearth of food (I believe they were behind on shipments; last I checked they closed every morning from 2:00 to
2:30 AM for re-stocking), but they were not taking meals, they were not taking cash, and the cash-to-card machine was broken. I, without
fl ex, was forced to go hungry. I almost shoplifted a yogurt bar. It would have served them right.
I can only pray that Chartwells will not screw us over like this. I am tired of being wrung for money and receiving so little nourishment
half of the states had their age limits
set younger than 21 before legislation
was passed in 1984, but now
all comply to the 21 age limit.
From an international perspective,
the United States minimum
drinking age of 21 is higher than
our neighboring countries, higher
than all of Europe, and higher than
most of the world.
This new big push for a decrease
in the drinking age is occurring
because of the war in Iraq and the
large number of young recruits. The
fact that one can enlist at 17 years
wait another 4 years to consume
alcohol legally is insulting to our
men and women in uniform. By that
calculation, at 17 years of age the
government believes you are mature
enough to handle an assault rifle, but
popping a beer is asking too much.
Any soldier who has served this
A fiscal look at
marijuana laws
Brian Tschiegg
STAFF WRITER
A police offi cer in Asheville, N.C.
spots a car driving 10 miles-per-hour
over the speed limit. The car is pulled
over, and what started out as a simple
traffi c stop ends in a simple possession
charge. Farther north, a man
is arrested for drug traffi cking. He
was accused of moving hundreds of
pounds of marijuana from California
to West Virginia. What’s the difference
between these two cases? The
drug traffi cker was given a Presidential
pardon recently.
A student at UMBC, who wishes to
be known as Ben, was visiting his girlfriend
in Asheville. While his girlfriend
was driving, a police offi cer pulled her
over for a speeding violation, but a
subsequent search of his person and
the car revealed about an ounce of
marijuana and various paraphernalia,
a misdemeanor under North Carolina’s
law. If convicted, Ben, a fi rst time offender,
faces up to 120 days in prison
and a $500 fi ne.
Anthony Foglio, Jr. was arrested in
West Virginia for drug traffi cking. He
stood accused of bringing hundreds of
pounds of marijuana from Santee, California
to West Virginia while he held
a residence in both places. Foglio was
convicted and given three years probation,
but recently he received one of
the 15 presidential pardons given out
by President Bush.
Why did Foglio receive the pardon
while a college student is forced to face
charges that could haunt him forever?
Foglio is an associate pastor at Sonrise
Community Church in Santee, Calif.
Plus, numerous contributions to the
Bush campaign have been made by
members of the church. Is this how
George Bush plans to spend the rest
of his time in offi ce? Punishing college
students and helping his buddies out
is no way to run a country.
Foglio calls it “God’s mercy,” but he
already received some mercy when
he got probation instead of the oneto-fi
ve years in prison that West Virginia
law mandates. Not only did he
receive a pardon, but his congregation
decided to give him another chance.
Now Foglio continues to preach, using
his “troubled past” to connect to
the gospel.
Both Ben and Foglio are casualties in
the “War on Drugs” which costs United
States taxpayers about $7.6 billion
a year. Both California and New York’s
budget for marijuana law enforcement
is about $1 billion every fi scal year.
This means that each marijuana arrest
costs about $10,400. Is the cost worth
the results? You would expect usage
and availability to go down while costs
go up, but the exact opposite is occurring.
Marijuana related arrests rose 165
percent from 1991 to 2003. The increase
in arrests has not led to a reduction
of new users, reduction of
availability, reduction of potency, or an
increase in prices.
Obviously these statistics point
out the truth: The so called “War on
Drugs” is not working. The prohibition
of marijuana is actually harming
the efforts of law enforcement agents
and fi scally harming the United States.
Most marijuana arrests are made on
people who have no intentions to sell
it. By focusing on street arrests, law
enforcement agents spend less time
trying to arrest suppliers, the people
who are actually harming this country.
These outdated laws ruin future opportunities
for good people. Ben will
now have to spend numerous hours in
court and thousands of dollars hiring
a lawyer. Isn’t it time that we take a
second look at who the real criminals
are?
NYC restriction on cellphone
useage compromises safety
Tiffany Johnson
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
September 11, 2001 was a horrifi c day
that still remains in the hearts of many of
those who weren’t there, but watched the
chilling event on television. Imagine then
how it must have been for the thousands
of people involved who were reaching out
to loved ones on their cellphones before
the towers collapsed, or before they became
a hero while saving others from being
targeted by terrorists on Flight 93.
Now imagine what it would have
been like if those people couldn’t contact
their children because of a silly ban on
cellphones in one of the nation’s largest
school systems, New York City.
New York City’s Department of Education
made a terrible mistake in September
2005 when they decided to ban 1.1 million
students from bringing cellphones to
school. Offi cials claim one of their reasons
for placing the ban was due to students
using their phones for cheating. Give me
a break. With or without cellphones, students
will fi nd a way to cheat. When it
comes to cheating, students morph into
the most strategically precise individuals.
Cell phones only make-up a small fraction
of the numerous ways teens can cheat.
With that being said, since cellphones can
become a small problem during testing, I
believe it’s okay for them to be confi scated
for that small frame of time. However,
what happened to the days when teachers
would walk around the classroom making
sure students didn’t cheat?
According to offi cials, another reason
for the ban is the distraction it causes for
teens. With the increase of sexual activity
taking place in school, sleeping in
class, drug abuse, and fi ghting, it seems
as though teachers would be begging offi
cials to allow students to use cellphones.
That may be a stretch, but honestly, students
will be distracted with or without
phones.
The main and most important reason
why cell phones shouldn’t be banned is
safety. Nowadays, with all the crime and
violence, phones are truly a precious gift.
When my cell phone is dead or if I don’t
have it with me, I honestly feel a bit unsafe.
Cell phones are a necessity for minor
to extreme cases, from your car breaking
down, or leaving your wallet or purse in
a store at the mall, to being kidnapped or
a burglary.
There was an incident not too long
ago where someone attempted to rob a
woman’s house. She was smart enough
to lock herself in the closet and bring her
cellphone. She called the cops and got out
safely with none of her belongings stolen.
Let’s not forget about the incident that
occurred in Baltimore when a teacher
was beaten by a student in a classroom
while another student caught it all on
their phone. The issue was brought to
light, and if the student didn’t videotape
the incident, the teacher could have been
blamed for triggering the violent behav-
ior.
The sad reality is that stories like this
happen every single day. In some New
York schools students are searched for
weapons before they enter the building.
If there are that many students entering
school with weapons, then why wouldn’t
you want them to carry devices that they
could use in the case of emergencies? It
seems like common sense to me that they
would want students and teachers alike
to be armed with anything that could
help save, or prevent, other students and
teachers from harm.
Unfortunately, our world is manifested
with crime and violence, but fortunately,
we have cell phones. When you hear stories
like the ones I previously mentioned,
you can’t help but to realize how valuable
phones are.
The artifi ciality and hypocrisy of a timetable for Iraq
Matt Mainen
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
There is no common sense basis for
the repeated demands for a timetable
of withdrawal from Iraq, when there
are no such demands for a withdrawal
from Afghanistan. It has been made
abundantly clear that both fronts in the
war on terror are equally important,
and considering that our troops in Afghanistan
are being forced to sit on their
hands while al-Qaeda has rebuilt to full
operational capacity in Pakistan, our
stay in Afghanistan will remain indefi -
nite.
This is on account of the fact that
in the foreseeable future, Pakistan will
neither make the sacrifi ces necessary
to fully eliminate al-Qaeda from its
territory, nor allow the United States
and coalition forces to take care of the
problem. The U.S. has not taken the
initiative, thus insurgents will be pouring
into Afghanistan for years to come
because their primary base of operation
is being left intact.
Another common argument against
the war in Iraq is that “our military is
being stretched thin,” but this seems
to assume that some more imminent
threat will arise. It makes little sense to
keep our military “on guard” to face a
hypothetical threat at the sacrifi ce of
dealing with a very real threat in the
here and now. The biggest threat right
now is coming from Iran, and it seems
that most of those who are making the
“stretched too thin” argument are the
same individuals arguing that a war
against Iran will be entirely provoked
by the Bush Administration. Using
their logic, then, our military is being
stretched too thin in order to have the
military capacity necessary to act on an
artifi cial threat. Those fearful that the
Bush Administration will declare war
on Iran should be happy that our troops
are bogged down in Baghdad. We cannot
conduct a successful war with Iran
while we are trying to make ends meet
in Iraq.
Beyond Iran, there are no current
threats that would require ignoring the
deadly fallout from a premature withdrawal
from Iraq. North Korea is cooperating
with dismantling its nuclear program,
and even if it weren’t, deterrence
theory would prevail as it has for Russia
and China. Additionally, North Korea
wants a closer relationship with the
United States, not war. The chances of
a more important threat arising than the
current situation in Iraq is about on par
with Lord Zolgermere of an unknown
alien race landing on earth and declaring
war on mankind. There are innumerable
hypothetical situations that require
a military ready to confront them,
but the necessary resources should be
centered on the here and now.
A fi nal point of hypocrisy found in
calling for a timetable of withdrawal
from Iraq and not Afghanistan centers
on pressuring the Iraqi government
to make changes because then it will
know that there will come a time when
it cannot get a free ride off of the United
States. The problem with this line of
reasoning is that it centers on a reward/
punishment model, but compared to
> Pry this from my cold dead hands.
Afghanistan, Iraq is making far more
progress, thus making it more deserving
of being rewarded with a U.S. troop
presence. While oil has been pumping
out of Iraq at a steady pace thanks to the
dedication of its politicians, Afghanistan
has been exporting its own local
product with the help of its politicians:
opium. Political progress in Iraq may be
slow, but at least it’s measurable.
Beyond the reward/punishment model,
we should also consider the necessity
of maintaining a high presence of troops
in Afghanistan and Iraq. It’s important
to keep in mind that the invasion of Afghanistan
was almost solely conducted
by the Northern Alliance on the ground.
Coalition forces mostly stuck to air support
and tactics. This should make clear
that Afghan forces have proven that
they are less in need of U.S. troops.
Considering that both fronts are equally
important (we’re fi ghting the same al-
Qaeda), and resources are limited (our
military is being stretched too thin), it
makes sense that a heavier allocation is
deferred to Iraq.
GREG DEWEY — TRW
Allies, such as France and Germany,
have made clear that our battle in Iraq is
ours alone. That’s fi ne, but they should
keep in mind their commitment as a
NATO ally in Afghanistan. If it becomes
necessary for a prolonged high troops
presence in Iraq or a more available
military to face a potential threat, NATO
should take the bulk of responsibilities
in Afghanistan.
Finally, as long as the real threat in
Northwest Pakistan continues to be ignored,
and victory in Afghanistan cannot
be achieved without eliminating this
threat, we’re going to be in Afghanistan.
A decision needs to be made whether or
not we are going to continue to fi ght the
bees as they come or attack the hive. On
the other hand, all steps necessary are
being pursued in Iraq, and, although
General Petraeus has been accused of
keeping a fuzzy picture of what winning
in Iraq means, we know that all steps
are being taken to get to that point.
Personal responsibility or
government intervention?
> from DRINKING [6]
nationwide or just statewide,
there are some strides aiming
to just grant military personnel
exemptions from the 21
minimum drinking age. I believe
these exemptions have
a strong chance of becoming
reality. Not only are we a nation
who loves our heroes,
but I don’t see the bill having
many opponents.
While the minimum drinking
age of 21 may seem like a
good thing, I believe the imposed
restriction causes more
harm than good. Whether
there is a law or not, teenagers
are going to drink. Any
law hoping to stop underage
drinking is worth nothing
more than a good laugh.
By making the drinking age
21, it turns underage drinkers
into criminals. Rather
than this being an issue they
should talk to their parents
about, they feel they must
now hide it from their parents.
Teens become reluctant
to go to their parents with
questions or concerns, and,
to further conceal their actions,
they will drink away
from home. While the main
intention of MADD was to
decrease drunk driving and
drunk driving related fatalities,
I feel like this is doing
the complete opposite by
forcing teens to drive where
they can drink. Not only
does this lead to an increase
in drunk driving, but because
of the lack of supervision,
this leads to more binge
drinking.
MADD has stated that
the 21 age limit has saved
20,000 people over the
years who would have died
in drunk driving accidents.
While MADD does deserve
some credit, the number
seems inflated and doesn’t
seem to account for outside
factors that could have prevented
death, like car safety
standards increasing over the
years, or increased law enforcement
on the road.
The two main combatants
in the minimum drinking
age debate seem to be MADD
and Choose Responsibility.
While both want a world
where there are no alcohol
related deaths, the two nonprofits
are going about it
in different ways. MADD is
veering on the side of prohibition
and hopes to end
drunk driving related deaths
through greater restrictions
on alcohol.
Choose Responsibility, on
the other hand, is aiming for
the same goal but through a
lowered minimum drinking
age, greater alcohol education,
and an approach to
bring underage drinking out
of basements into a more
monitored environment.
While MADD should be
commended for their efforts
and for the number of lives
they have saved, I believe the
policies they lobbied for in
the 1980’s are creating negative
side effects too large to
ignore. Even if the minimum
drinking age is not reduced
for everyone, it would still
be nice to see our young men
and women in uniform have
the right to an ice cold beer
if they so choose.
winning piece in New York
RETRIEVER STAFF
UMBC’s Visual Arts Imaging Research
Center Fellows participated
in two performances with the
Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra
this past Sunday. The visual arts
students entered a competition in
which they created a video that
accompanied a fi ve-minute contemporary
violin composition. The
piece, entitled “Try to Believe,” was
written by Randall Woolf and is a
sprightly, surreal song. The video
was screened during two performances
by the Orchestra in New
York City.
For the fi rst month and a half of
the project, starting at the beginning
of this semester, the ten students
worked tirelessly to create no
less than thirty of these spinning
sculptures, called “cinetropes.”
Then, fi lming and editing had to
be done before the deadline of
March 7th. The contest was held
over youtube.com and everyone
watched and waited to see how
the Fellows’ submission would fare
against the nine other candidates
for the competition. The winner
was clear only days after submissions
had closed since the Fellows’
“Try to Believe” had earned more
views and a one star lead on any of
the other contributors. On Friday,
April 18, the offi cial results were
announced with the UMBC IRC
Fellows as the winners of the “Believe
You Can Win” contest.
The IRC students created more
than 28 paper, foam core, and
mixed media sculptures that they
then used in the video, resulting
in “live” animation. The animation
was infl uenced by the concept of
the zoetrope, a pre-cinema optical
toy. The animation shows a girl, a
modern-day “Alice,” walking down
a street, and this is juxtaposed with
high-paced kaleidoscopic images.
The bright colors and quick changes
result in a video that is erratic
and jarring, perfectly exemplifying
the music.
“The IRC Fellows ran with this
project from the start and they
poured an enormous amount of
smart creativity and enthusiasm
into it,” said Professor Eric Dyer,
who taught the IRC Fellows Program
this semester. “The public
presentation of their video in
New York City is a well-deserved
award.”
During the presentation on Sunday,
a representative of the Philharmonic
then enthusiastically introduced
the Fellows, saying “our
winners are actually here from Baltimore,”
emphasizing “Baltimore”
as if it were surprising, but then
followed that by saying that their
work had “surpassed any of the
our [the Philharmonic’s and Randall
Woolf’s] expectations” for the
contest. The Fellows rose and were
recognized before violinist Jennifer
Choi took the stage to perform the
violin solo to accompany the prerecorded
digital track. Following
the performance, the Fellows were
asked to stand again to great applause
from the small crowd at the
Brooklyn Museum.
The IRC Fellows Program is a
seminar-style course that brings
together art majors who display
exceptional talent in their fi rst two
years as undergraduates. The small
class works on projects and focuses
on emerging technologies and media
criticism.
The IRC Fellows will perform
the animations live on May 13 at
the Baltimore Creative Alliance.
They will be accompanied by violinist
Martin Shultz of the Peabody
Conservatory.
She Stoops
conquers hearts
Asmara Qamar
STAFF WRITER
The theater department’s production
of Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to
Conquer proved to be a hilarious, fl ashy
frolic, involving highly fashionable gentlemen,
mistaken identities, an overbearing
mother, alternating shyness and
lechery, an inheritance, and of course,
lots of love and a happy ending.
Young Charles Marlow (Kevin James)
is meant to pick a wife in Kate Hardcastle
(Daphne Gardner), but is cripplingly
shy around women of a higher class,
though very forward among women
he perceives to be of a lower class.
Tony Lumpkin (Michael Houk) plays a
trick on Marlow and his friend, George
Hastings (Travis Hudson), by directing
them to Hardcastle’s manor while
calling it an inn. At the “inn,” Marlow
meets Kate, and although he is mortifi
ed with shyness during the meeting,
she is enamored with him. In order to
get through Marlow’s shy exterior, Kate
pretends to be the inn’s barmaid around
Marlow, and is thoroughly fl irted with.
The sub-plot is about love between
the foppish Hastings and Miss Neville
(Barbara Madison Hauck), who is
Kate’s cousin. Tony Lumpkin’s pranks
and mischief tie it all together, while
Mrs. Hardcastle’s (Kelly Cavanaugh)
efforts create more and more obstructions.
Finally, the benevolent fathers,
Mr. Hardcastle (Alexander Scally) and
Sir Marlow (Mikey Cafarelli), create a
happy ending.
The acting was solid; James’s shyanguish
and fl irtation drew endearment
and laughs, and so did Gardner’s
quickness, Scally’s objections (including
at being ordered to fetch some
warm punch for the gentlemen), and
Cavanaugh’s rage as she crawled upon
the stage, dress torn. Houk owns his
big pink wig and makeup, reeling and
staggering while delivering antic after
antic. The Hastings-Neville affair drew
plenty of laughs and “awws” through
Hudson and Hauck’s great performances;
he showed his love-longing and
even sang away his desire for a quick
elopement, but she couldn’t leave behind
her inheritance, and dragged her
lover back in time for everything to
fall orderly into place. The maids and
servants, played by Samantha Nelson,
Nik Diener, Partick Letterii and Kevin
Driscoll, did a great job as well, from
depicting a proper militia stance, to
passing out drunk.
Rather than choose the very familiar
Ye-Olde-18th-century-England
details, the production gave a new
fl are by showing exaggerated, striking
costumes: ruffl es and spheres
of silk and taffeta, generous amounts
of makeup, high heels, and glittering
jewels adorned the main characters,
more the men than the women. The female
characters wore dresses that were
spherical below the waist, kept round
by hoops, and narrowed around the feet
in a small circle. When they had to walk
they would skip about in quick, giggleinducing,
mini-steps. The stage cleverly
used lifting discs to switch from manor,
to tavern, to nighttime garden. However,
the disc, once erected, remained
somewhat slanted, which kept making
me think that it was going to fall and
crush the actors. Fortunately, nothing of
the sort happened.
If you missed it--well, then, sir, or
madam, you missed a jolly “toroddle,
toroddle, toroll,” some tiff-taff-taffety
cream, the little star on Hudson’s
painted cheek, and a fortune (of a play)
chiefl y consisting of jewels: for shame,
pshaw, pshaw!
Bartleby awards honor creative achievement
Liz Omberg
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
The program to the Bartleby release
event sums up the experience
in which it titles itself, “a celebration
of writing an art” and labels itself,
“a unique collaboration between
authors and artists.” This event was
a merge of the creative arts journal
along with the English and Visual
Arts departments at UMBC and was
sponsored by The Friends of the Library
& Gallery. Writers read their
poetry, fi ction, and creative nonfi
ction while the visual art students
designed posters that were their interpretation
of the words. The mesh
of art forms was a huge success and
having the posters really brought
another dimension to the stories,
demonstrating how all art is related
and that there are many ways to express
oneself — either through ink or
through paint or charcoal or graphic
design.
The Library Gallery was shockingly
full for an event like this. One of my
gripes with UMBC is the lack of arts
on campus. Have you seen the Fine
Arts building? However, the house
was packed and ready to hear and
see some of the best art that UMBC
has to offer. The fi rst performance,
Jessica Dotson’s poem, “Mechanics
of a Man,” was stunning and written
Art Student of the Week: Andre Cawley
A guy with natural talent and a
need to achieve. These are just two
ways to describe this week’s UMBC
Art Student of the Week. Having met
many art students over the past year, I
would have to say that this one is the
humblest of them all. He has a real
gift, and yet has no desire to show it
off. The art student I am referring to
is none other than Andre Cawley.
Andre is a 20 year old junior here
at UMBC. He is majoring in Graphic
Design in the Visual Arts department.
Andre has not always lived here in
Maryland, nor has he attended UMBC
his whole academic career. He was
originally from San Diego, California.
From there he spent some time in Sicily,
Italy before moving to Baltimore in
the mid ‘90s. You may be wondering
why someone would move so much
when he was growing up. Maybe it
has to do with the fact that his father
is in the Navy.
While you may think that having a
Navy father would be hard because of
the constant orders and strict house
rules, Andre says that his father was
the person he looked up to the most.
He said he loves the way his father
is very persistent and yet extremely
loving and accepting of everyone.
Andre also mentioned how his entire
family has been supportive of his decision
to be a Graphic Design major.
But this has not been done entirely
here at UMBC. Andre is a transfer student
who used to attend a school in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is his
second year here at UMBC and he has
no regrets.
After Andre is fi nished at UMBC, he
is scheduled to graduate in the spring
of 2009, and he has full intentions of
remaining here in Baltimore for a little
while longer. However, don’t think
about the seemingly diffi cult subject
of a mechanic but managed to give
the mechanic a gentle side. She is an
English and Visual Arts student, so
she was given the task of designing
her own poster, on which she did a
great job of.
My favorite writer of the night was
Mariana Rivera Rodriguez who read
> Andre Cawley is humble about his talents in graphic design.
that he will try to stay home forever.
His ultimate goal and aspiration is to
move somewhere on the west coast
and hopefully work for some high
paying music magazine. Short of
that, he would settle for moving to
the west coast and working for any
magazine. He did mention that if he
had never taken graphic design, he
would have probably tried to work in
the public relations arena.
Surprisingly enough, Andre never
took art in high school; it was always
just a hobby of his. Maybe it is because
of this fact that he has no outside
infl uences on his work. He likes
to invent his work as he sees things
that give him ideas. In this sense, he
can be viewed as a true original. Not
that he doesn’t respect or admire
what people did in the past, but just
like them, he wants to be his own individual
and different.
her fi ction story, “Moffi ts in A Shoebox,”
which won the fi ction award
for the new Bartleby publication.
This eerie story was about a family
> Jessica Dotson, a Visual Arts and English major, discusses her work with her mother.
on Christmas morning, but rather
than opening presents, they were lying
dead on their bed. The language
and descriptions in the story caused
an immediate connection to the
As with most things in life, if you
love to do it, you will probably be
very good at doing it. In Andre’s case,
he loves print media the best out of
every form of art. Perhaps that is why
he has his art work displayed so much
these days. From what I could see, his
art work was very precise and professional.
He takes great pride in what
he does and takes it very seriously,
which is what will undoubtedly allow
him to make it in the real world.
Some of his art work is featured on
the newly designed Visual Arts website.
He even said that it took him a
whole month to plan, prepare, and
create one of his pieces of art (the
large piece in the picture).
While here at UMBC, Andre said
that his favorite class was Graphic Design
with Guenet Abraham. This was
because he was able to apply what he
had learned from other fundamen-
characters and when I realized that
the story did not have a happy ending
I felt that I actually lost people
that I had personally known. This
LAUREN KASMIR — TRW
story was accompanied by three
posters, designed by Dominique
Chirinciuc, that were mostly done
in muted grays and whites with a
few red words printed on them. The
by Matthew Jones
MATTHEW JONES — TRW
tal graphic design classes into actual
work that he will be using later on.
When asked about his favorite teacher,
he said that he had two: Guenet
Abraham and Peggy Re. He said that
they are both very encouraging and
friendly, but also helpful because they
try to push him to be better, yet be
practical in everything that he does.
Also while being here at UMBC, Andre
said that his least favorite class
was French 201 because he just found
it hard to grasp.
Whenever Andre has free time,
which is not too often, he likes to
go out with friends, usually to DC or
downtown Baltimore. He sometimes
likes to go to local clubs and party every
once in a while as well. Andre said
that one crazy fact about him that
most people probably don’t know is
that when he was in high school, he
participated in the Future Farmers
posters really added to the shocking
and downcast aspects of the story.
There is a common misconception
that poetry can mean whatever you
want it to mean. As a poet, I know
that this is false and that there are
different aspects of the poem that
different people can relate to and
take away from the poem. However,
when writers craft their poems, they
do have a concrete idea in their mind
and do not write in abstracts to relate
to everyone. Having the art with
the writing illustrates that the meaning
behind the art was the same as
the meaning behind the words, but
the artist picked up on one specifi c
aspect of the writing and crafted a
poster around that. It was really interesting
to see someone else’s take
on a piece of writing and to see them
create something from that. Brandon
Dottin presented his poem “Hyacinth
Lost” and said he got the inspiration
from a painting. This event had the
same circle, art inspiring art, and it
worked perfectly.
The new issue of Bartleby came
out last week so make sure to pick
up your copy anywhere around campus
and get reading!
at eomberg1@umbc.edu.
of America (FFA) program. Here they
went to reservations and did various
He said that while most people don’t
understand it, he had a lot of fun doing
it, even though he is thought of as
an urban guy.
Before the end of the interview,
Andre wanted to make it clear to everyone
that he doesn’t like it when
people assume that he took the easy
road in college by being an art student.
He said that art is in no way “the
easy way out. It is hard to do and it
takes time and talent. Just because I
am not memorizing data or information
for an exam doesn’t mean I am
not working just as hard as someone
who is.” He also wanted to give some
advice to people who are new to college.
“Don’t be afraid to do something
new. Step out of your comfort zone
and experience different things in life.
That is what college is all about.”
On behalf of the staff at The Retriever
Weekly and the Visual Arts
Department, we would like to congratulate
Andre Cawley for being
this week’s UMBC Art Student of the
Week. I have no doubt that Andre
will be able to accomplish anything
that he sets his mind to. He has the
talent, skill, and drive to be great in
everything that encompasses graphic
design. So remember, if you happen
And yet another comedy. It would
appear as if most movies of recent have
been focusing on the aspect of comedic
viewing pleasure. But how do you
work out which ones are worth seeing
over the ones that are a total bust? It
all depends on what sort of comedy
you prefer. If you like to see a comedy
that is a mix of crazy visual humor and
humor depicted through the dialog,
then this movie is for you.
The fi lm Harold and Kumar Escape
from Guantanamo Bay is your basic
story of mistaken identity. After falling
in love with a hot, vivacious woman
at a hotel, Harold (John Cho) decides
to chase after and declare his love to
her. He boards a plane with his best
friend Kumar (Kal Penn). Kumar has
a story of his own. He fi nds out that
his ex-girlfriend is about to get married
to this guy that Kumar just can’t
stand. While trying to fi gure out how
to break their engagement, Kumar
agrees to fl y to Amsterdam to try to
fi nd Harold’s love interest. During this
fl ight, Harold decides to be stupid on
This week, the UMBC African Student
Association celebrated Jambo Night,
ASA’s most anticipated event of the year.
The event was hosted in the University
Center ballroom, which was fi lled to
capacity with a proud representation
of the UMBC community, friends, well
wishers, and guests from neighboring
colleges. Faces lit up with excitement as
guests exchanged warm greetings with
classmates, parents, and old friends.
This year’s theme was "Africa: The
Evolution." The program sought to
showcase African culture and its evo-
the plane, and his actions make one
passenger believe that he is a terrorist
who is trying to kill everyone on
board.
After the plane makes an emergency
landing, Kumar and Harold are
mistaken for terrorists and are sent to
Guantanamo Bay by the United States
government. Due to some freak accident,
Harold and Kumar are able
to escape from Guantanamo Bay and
make their way back to the U.S. They
eventually realize that they are being
hunted down by the government, and
thus try to fi nd a way to clear their
names. It turns out that the only man
who can help them is the man who is
about to marry Harold’s ex-girlfriend.
So, Kumar and Harold try to make it
to get help while Harold tries to fi gure
out how he can ruin the marriage
and get his ex-girlfriend back. Along
the way, Harold and Kumar encounter
many different people. There is even
an appearance by Neil Patrick Harris,
playing himself, and George W. Bush
(or at least his look-alike James Adomian).
The trailer for this fi lm is what inspired
me to go see it. It looked very
lution in modernism through brilliant
displays of dance, fashion shows, music,
food, and drama.
The program kicked off with former
SGA presidential candidate, Elani Elegbe
singing verses of the South African,
Nigerian, and African-American national
anthems. Her beautiful voice moved
the audience and set a perfect tone for
the evening. Masters of ceremony Abba
Udofa and Chidinma Ukonne brilliantly
conducted the order of the program.
ASA’s drama team performed “Breaking
boundaries,” a comical piece that
addressed core issues of social and ethical
problems faced by African youth in
their native countries and abroad. The
funny, but in a realistic way. This fi lm
is a sequel, but in case you never saw
the original, don’t worry, it makes no
difference. This is a whole new story
that is very easy to follow. I was a little
disappointed that there weren’t as
many funny parts in the fi lm as I had
thought there would be, but there are
still plenty of moments that kept the
audience laughing.
This movie has very graphic and has
harsh nudity displayed throughout,
and it contains strong language and
drug use. In other words, it is nothing
new to the typical college student, but
don’t feel free to take your ten year old
cousin.
This movie had some of the weirdest
story lines anyone could think of,
but what made it so enjoyable is how
the characters are complete opposites
of each other, and yet remain best
friends. Harold is the stupid, crazy,
and wild one, while Kumar is the
smart and sensible of the two. The actors
make their characters very believable,
and it seems so effortless.
The cameo of Neil Patrick Harris
was well worth the wait, and the few
scenes with President Bush were so
drama illustrated the pressure that
African youth experience in trying to
impress their traditional parents as well
as keeping apace with their colleagues
in a fast and ever changing world. The
drive for success and wealth, as well as
peer infl uence reminded the audience
of an ever-growing struggle to maintain
decency and cultural ethics.
The fashion show, which was the
highlight of the evening, was a masterpiece.
It was composed of fi ve scenes,
each depicting an aspect of "The Evolution."
The fi rst scene, "Freedom,"
showcased traditional designs spiced
with brightly-colored body arts. "Erotica"
was composed of modern designs
This week
IRON MAN (PG-13)
The next big superhero movie actually looks pretty promising. When I
heard they cast Robert Downy Jr. as the lead role, I actually shuddered.
Their reasoning was that his actual history of substance abuse would
relate well to Iron Man’s fi ctional history of substance abuse. Is that
how we cast acting roles nowadays? Should we have a casting call to
prisons for the next crime drama? But the trailers and initial reviews
for Iron Man actually lead me to believe it will be good. How fortunate
for them, as my ten dollars will soon become their ten dollars, and they
can get right to work on Ghost Rider 2. It gives me the same feeling
as when I think that my particular portion of tax money actually goes
toward a bomb for some orphanage in Iraq rather than the “roads,
hospitals, and schools” most people think of when they imagine where
tax money goes.
MADE OF HONOR (NOT YET RATED)
This, ladies, is the equivalent of a total solar eclipse right at midday in
rarity. This looks like the most clichéd, monstrously tacky chick fl icks I
have had the displeasure to read a synopsis of in years. Patrick Dempsey
has this best friend who goes away on vacation for a few months. He realizes
he’s in love with her when she’s gone, but fi nds out she engaged
a man on the trip. Now, he will be her MAID of honor (you get it? That’s
the best damn pun title I’ve ever seen. You know, they say puns are
the highest form of humor. Oh wait, did I say highest? I meant YOU’RE
TERRIBLE!!!) and has only a few weeks to woo her and win her away
from the foreign man. Women, if you want tangible proof that your
boyfriends really love you, make them go see this movie on opening
day instead of Iron Man. If he’ll do this for you, you are in complete and
total control, and you can pretty much start picking out the curtains.
FUGITIVE PIECES (NOT YET RATED)
This movie is about a child who was orphaned in World War 2, and the
story revolves around his growing up and coming to terms with the
atrocities that surrounded his childhood. It sounds beautiful and touching.
Too bad nobody is going to see it because they’re seeing Iron Man,
or, God forbid, Made of Honor. RIP, Fugitive Pieces. Perhaps we will
know you better on DVD.
funny that the audience couldn’t stop
laughing long enough to hear the next
comedic line that was delivered. Don’t
expect this movie to win any honors
this year, which are not its intentions.
But if you want to see something that
can take a fare jab at topics such as
racism, discrimination, and sexuality,
then this movie is right up your alley.
I enjoyed this movie and would recommend
you to go see it while it is out
in theaters. It is one of the few movies
worth the price of the admission
ticket, and you will feel good as you
incorporated into original traditional
fabrics. "Scene Africa" showcased models
in vibrant designs, each displaying
an African fl ag. "Provocative" was another
modern display, with a very highfashion
sense about it, and "Sensual
Touch" showcased models in stunning
white attire that was a beautiful blend
of purity and sensuality.
Dance performances were not left
out. UMBC ASA’s dance troupe sent the
audience wild with harmonic twists
and turns (in all the right directions)
to the sounds of African Soukus music.
Dance troupes from Bowie State
University and Morgan State University
performed, as well as Les Savages danc-
are walking out of the movies. It easily
earns a three star rating and will undoubtedly
do well at the box offi ce for
a while. So if you need a good laugh,
then escape from your dorm at UMBC
or your house and go see Harold and
Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
before it escapes from a theater near
you!
Musical performances from N.S, Riz,
you are curious and love to learn.
You are the fi rst to know about any
Cancer (6/22-7/22): The school year
is almost over- relax! Get outside and
try to take things as slow as possible.
Your emotions will probably dominate
It’s also a good way to make
I Think We’re Alone Now by
Sean Donnelly is about two Tiffany
superfans. One has Asperger’s and
the other is a hermaphrodite. So if
you enjoy watching people wallow
in their pathetic ridiculousness, or
ridiculous pathetic-ness, or if on the
other hand you yourself simply enjoy
the music of Tiffany, this movie’s
for you.
If you enjoy good music, you
want to check out Upsetter by Ethan
Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough, a
documentary about who else but
Lee “Scratch” Perry. This should be
at least entertaining, provided that
Perry himself is in it. This is a guy
who is rumored to have burned
manuscript gallery on the third fl oor,
and community art pieces centered on
the theme of maps on the fourth fl oor.
The breadth of the main exhibit’s pieces
is truly impressive: maps of Florence by
Leonardo da Vinci, sketches of Middle
Earth by J.R.R. Tolkien, marginalia by
Benjamin Franklin. Other interesting
pieces include a reed structure that
great, but sometimes it’s better to
view things from a distance. This
is especially the case right now for
relationships. Friends and loved ones
may seem frustrating, but you lighten
up later in the week. When you’re not
being critical, that energy of yours
needs to be directed elsewhere. Use
the weather and just spend time with
people. It will help you understand
others better.
Libra (9/23-10/22): Communication
comes easily to you. Be precise about
your feelings and you will reap the
rewards. Keep the dialogue going
throughout the week. Don’t back
down because you sense trouble
coming; by talking about it you might
even avoid a problem. The people you
are close with are a priority for you at
this point. Put them fi rst and they are
likely to do the same for you.
Scorpio (10/23-11/21): Proceed with
caution. Keep this thought in mind
as the week progresses. New ideas
are coming at you from all angles
and you crave change. Change is fi ne
but take it slow. Instead of diving
headfi rst into something new, try it
out fi rst. You are incredibly passionate
right now. Use this to make progress
in relationships, and don’t be afraid
to make the fi rst move! Over the
weekend try to simmer down a bit.
Sagittarius (11/22-12/21): Others
Now Playing
DAVE IDEN — TRW
> The Lexie Mountain-fronted “Crazy Dreams Band” played the
Floristree last Saturday.
back in the seventies.
But if you seriously don’t like
good music, and mostly just like
weirdos, we have Song Sung Blue
by Greg Kohs, about a husband and
wife music duo called Lightning
& Thunder (I guess the costumes
will clear up the debate regarding
which person corresponds to the
weather phenomenon). Yeah, I bet
things start off good and end up
bad.
A non-fi lmic event of interest for
represented the currents of the waters
around a South East Asian island and
the original print of the iconic London
Tube map.
My only gripe with the exhibit was
the fact that audio guides have been
replaced by a toll-free number that you
punch into your cell phone at each
featured piece to get information. The
are fl ocking to you this week for your
advice. You’ll need your insight to
help others, and yourself deal with
all the issues. Not all of them are bad
though. To make progress romantically
you’ll have to let go of people
from the past. Do this and there are
many new possibilities that await you.
This weekend you take a break from
the ordinary and have fun in ways
you never thought of before.
Capricorn (12/22-1/19): Romance is
in the air, so what are you going to
do about it? Finances preoccupy your
thoughts early in the week. Money is
nice but just make sure you’re making
room for other matters as well.
Instead of doing all your work at
once, spread it out and do a little bit
each day. This way you can be more
spontaneous and truly listen to your
heart. You are your own inspiration
right now.
Aquarius (1/20-2/18): Divine inspiration
is zeroing in on your sign this
week. If you’ve been lacking brilliancy
lately it’s coming back to you
now. You have all sorts of ideas and
thoughts that open up new doors for
you. It’s up to you where you want to
go. Mid-week take care of the technical
issues, especially if they involve
others. Afterwards there is fun all
around you, so sit back and enjoy.
Pisces (2/19-3/20): You’re smart
you literary types may be had at the
Carriage House for the i.e. readings
series, at 8 o’clock on Saturday, the
third day of the month of May.
Reading will be the Shattered Wig
impresario Rupert Wondolowski,
the mysterious Maureen Thorson,
and Buck Downs, who has been
it; maybe you’d like to step up to
the plate. It is located in an alley,
underneath the yellow light, 2223
Hargrove Street.
result is having to type in a string of
14 numbers each time and the echoes
of bleep-bleep-bloop-bleep-bleep resounding
throughout the gallery. And
hey, what if you don’t own a cell phone,
right? The printed information provided
with each map, however, is nicely
> see MAPS [19]
and everyone knows it. Sometimes
people get so wrapped up in their
knowledge that the idea gets lost in
the process. Keep the thought process
going but make sure you’re communicating
clearly as well. Creativity runs
high, and should help you with any
changes you want to make. You are
also very in tune with others. Amplify
your connections with the people
you’re close to.
Aries (3/21-4/19): Independence is a
good quality, but there comes a time
to work with others. That time for
you is right now. Things are much simpler
when you don’t have to do everything
by yourself. The challenge in
working with others is remembering
that you can’t always be in charge.
Seek input from everyone instead
of making tyrannical decisions. This
weekend is a more appropriate time
for direct action.
Taurus (4/20-5/20): You are a little
more sensitive than usual. Or maybe
temperamental is a better word.
People know exactly what makes
you tick, and you’re in a no-nonsense
mood. Don’t give others the pleasure
of knowing that they’ve annoyed
you- just ignore them. Luck is back
Rock Creek Trio puts on captivating performance
Sarah Evans
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
When musicians can capture and
hold the attention of an audience
for a full hour and 30 minutes while
playing some of the true classics, it is
a sign of immense talent. Many of the
classical pieces by legendary composers
like Bach and Brahms are incredibly
diffi cult to play in a way that does
them any justice. This was a challenge
taken on by the Rock Creek Trio in a
performance brought to campus by
the UMBC Department of Music; a
challenge in which these musicians
unquestionably came out on top.
Comprised of pianist Robert Boguslaw,
violinist Regino Madrid, and cellist
Charles Powers, the Rock Creek
Trio brought a program consisting of
the three major classical composers
with the fi rst letter of their last names
in common: Bach, Beethoven, and
Brahms. With only three pieces and
an hour and a half long show, you do
the math, each piece was relatively
lengthy. Yet the music never dragged,
and I didn’t once wish for the end of
the program. These three musicians
brought life and feeling to real classical
pieces, something I have been
around
campus
reasons not
to go home
this weekend
waiting to see happen in the Fine Arts
Recital Hall for awhile now.
The fi rst piece, tackled by Bogus-
law alone, was “Prelude and Fugue
#8 (WTC, Book 1)” by Johann Sebastian
Bach. Boguslaw’s entrance for
his piano solo was taken simply, with
no frills, just the single man walking
on stage to a light applause and sitting
down at the piano to play. The
smooth, sweet, ringing notes fi lled the
Recital Hall, at a pace slow enough to
SLIGHTLY A MASOCHIST
savor each note. It was a wonderful
showcase piece for the talented pianist,
demonstrating the lovely, light
> Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms were all played beautifully.
LAUREN KASMIR — TRW
touch he holds, and starting the show
on a great note.
For the next piece, the other two
musicians made their appearance on
stage for the fi rst piece as a trio. After
a simple tuning pitch from the piano,
a four movement piece, “Trio in Cminor
Opus 1, #3” by Ludwig van
Beethoven began. Powers and Madrid
worked together, seamlessly weaving
the sounds of the cello and violin together
and playing off of the piano’s
melodies. This fi rst movement, “Allegro
Con Brio,” ended with a loud,
abrupt end to contrast with the
second movement “Andante Cantabile
con Variazioni.” This was a much
lighter section, with counter melodies
between the violin and cello. The piano
got a change for a beautiful solo,
with the violin and cello just plucking
the strings instead of actually playing.
The third movement “Menuetto” began
much quicker, with sharp notes.
It bounced along like a dance, with
quick runs of notes between the
cello and piano, then the violin and
piano, which were performed with a
good restraint and contrast in loudness.
The “Finale, Prestissimo” had a
very bold start, and incorporated the
quick runs of the previous movement
with the fast pace of the others.
After a brief intermission, the trio
returned with what I consider their
best work, “Trio in B-major, Opus
#8” by Johannes Brahms. The fi rst
movement “Allegro Con Brio,” began
with the rich sound of the cello and
piano, then adding the violin. The
musicians displayed the contrasts
found in the speed and volume of the
piece extremely well in this section,
leading into the second movement
“Scherzo, Allegro Molto.” This part
of the piece was so bouncy that the
bows of the cello and violin were literally
bouncing off of the strings on
the instruments, a great contrast to
the third movement “Adagio.” As the
name means, this section was much
slower, even somber by comparison
to the rest of the piece. This feeling
was added to by the deep ringing
chords on the piano that were present
throughout the section. The piece
was then concluded with the movement
“Allegro,” a faster section, again
as the name designates. A more aggressive
playing style changed the
mood of this section.
Overall, the Rock Creek Trio put
on a beautiful show, capturing the
feeling that the legendary composers
were most likely aiming for, and
proving why the classics are considered
the true standard for musical
achievement.
Q: I’m 22 years old and I have never had a boyfriend. I’m about to graduate college and I’m starting to realize that while I’ve done well academically
I have failed socially. I want a boyfriend, how can I go about getting one?
A: First, I want to make sure that you’re congratulating yourself on this remarkable accomplishment. Not many people have the ability to graduate college, and you
are now one of the elite and I applaud you. Now, having a boyfriend is great but that’s not the only thing that is good in life. Try not to place so much emphasis
on having a boyfriend or on being social because there are many things that defi ne whether you’re social other than having a boyfriend. Think about it: there are
many single, intelligent and popular women out there. Also, don’t think that you can just go out and fi nd a boyfriend like “that” because that’s not the type of
relationship that you want. Having a boyfriend is only everything that you imagine it to be if that boyfriend is special and unique. You should never try and rush
into a relationship because then you won’t be able to judge if that person complements you or not, and that is really what your looking for. So my suggestion is to
go out there and let people know that you’re available, but don’t be desperate; make that special person work for it! Good luck and congratulations again.
Q: My boyfriend recently went to get his haircut and he got his eyebrows done. Now, I understand when he tells me that he does it for his
uni-brow, but he gets the entire thing done. Should I be worried? Does he have a tendency for wanting to live the “alternative lifestyle?” I need
advice please!
A: Believe it or not, there are a lot of guys who get their eyebrows done, but this doesn’t mean that they are homosexual. Just like how women feel they need to
look a certain way, men also get that type of pressure from the media to be a certain way. Some men do this because they think that their eyebrows are overwhelming,
or like in your boyfriend’s case they have a uni-brow. Maybe they do it just because they like the way it looks. Being homosexual is not about wearing fl amboyant
colors and tight shirts. There are many homosexuals that are not fl ashy and out there. Considering the fact that this is your boyfriend we’re talking about, I
don’t think that we have anything to worry about. But if him getting his eyebrows done bothers you that much, then sit him down and talk to him about it, but
don’t assume that just because he gets his eyebrows waxed, that it means anything about his sexual preference.

As the season comes to a close, UMBC
still on the line, last years’ America East
Last week the Retrievers played their
last game at home against Binghamton as
they defeated the Bearcats 5-0. Freshman
pitcher Stephanie Weigman threw her
second career shutout, as she struck out
Second baseman Dana Shepherd reached
A look into UMBC’s tennis program
Zak Bratcher
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
In the midst of a groundbreaking
spring for UMBC athletics, it’s unsurprisingly
simple to overlook lesser-known,
less publicized success stories.
Everyone is familiar with Randy Monroe’s
high-powered offense launching
the men’s basketball team to uncharted
NCAA Tournament heights in March.
Similarly, most people recognize that
Don Zimmerman’s impenetrable defense
has the fi fth-ranked men’s lacrosse
team– poised to make serious noise
come tournament time this May.
But is anybody aware of Keith Puryear’s
men’s and women’s tennis teams?
Despite falling just short in the
America East Championships this past
weekend, both tennis squads, and their
coaching staff, have garnered noteworthy
accomplishments this season.
The men, freshly removed from last
season’s fi rst AEC title and an NCAA
Tournament berth, earned conference
runner-up this year. They fi nished with
a 15-5 record, rattling off eight consecutive
wins, including their fi rst ever over
neighbor Navy, before stumbling in the
championship game against Binghamton.
Not to be outdone, the women followed
up their 2007 AEC runner-up
campaign with a 13-4 record, completing
a stretch in which they emerged
victorious 12 straight times. They were
defeated in the conference semifi nals,
also at the hands of the Bearcats.
Guiding these prominent programs
has been head coach Puryear, no stranger
to personal success himself. Puryear,
who, along with assistant coach Ale
Pedergnama, was recognized as America
East Coaching Staff of the Year last
year, was named the 2007 Mid-Atlantic
College Coach of the Year by the U.S.
Professional Tennis Association earlier
this year.
Puryear admitted that the award was
nice, especially considering coaches
from bigger schools, such as those in
the Atlantic Coast Conference, typically
receive the honor. He, also, was quick to
> Softball has lost seven of their last ten games.
share his achievement.
“It’s more a testament to the kids than
to me,” said Puryear in an interview
at the Retrievers Activities Center last
Wednesday. “To be recognized is always
great, but I try to put it in perspective:
It’s not so much about me; it’s about the
team.”
His women’s team embarked on their
Spring season with a bit of uncertainty,
securing only one win in their fi rst four
contests while succumbing to eventual
AEC champion Boston University,
Columbia, and Atlantic-10 champion
Temple. However, Puryear calmed his
Retrievers by preaching the merits of
playing hard every point, maturation
through adversity, and mental toughness.
“Those (fi rst four matches) were the
toughest matches we had,” said junior
Cornelia Carapcea. “I think the team
kind of got scared and started to pick it
up. We fi nally started to take care of the
things we could take care of.”
Finally settled, the women didn’t lose
again until this past Saturday, an impressive
span of 12 straight match victories.
“The ladies fi rst started off a little
rough, but we saw potential,” said Puryear.
“They needed to learn what to do
to be successful.”
With a youthful Retriever squad who
stands to lose only two graduating seniors,
who earned AEC runner-up a year
ago, and who generated an impressive
campaign this season, the women’s ship
is navigating toward bountiful lands.
“We’ve done the work this year, and
we’ve had very good results,” Puryear
said. “The ladies have taken a major
step to become one of the top teams in
the region.”
On the men’s side, the season-long
journey followed a different course.
Despite an opening loss at powerhouse
Virginia Tech, the Retrievers emerged
strong, indicative of a more experienced,
senior-loaded team. In the beginning of
March, however, the Retriever voyage
became turbulent, as the team lost three
of six games.
“(The men) had some challenges,”
said Puryear. “We started off pretty
quickly, but had a period in the middle
of the season where we sort of needed to
fi nd ourselves again.”
Not surprisingly, led by seniors
David Jackson, Irfan Shamasdin, and
Fernando Ferreira, the Retrievers steadied
themselves and started stringing
together victories, culminating with an
eight-game streak and a spot in the AEC
fi nals.
In the heart of their streak was a statement
win, a hard fought 4-3 triumph
over the Naval Academy, the fi rst for
UMBC tennis. Jackson helped will his
team to succeed by eking out a grueling
three-set singles victory.
“I think especially the match against
Navy teaches you how to deal with situations,”
said Jackson. “You learn how to
deal better. We might not be playing
well, but we’ll be able to draw on past
matches and be able to dig deep, knowing
we’ve done it before.”
Puryear said he stresses to his upperclassmen
the importance of leading by
example, even – especially – in defeat.
He understands that this infl uence on
younger players sets a foundation for
them to fall into place within the structure
and the mentality of the team.
“Anytime you lose a match and you
don’t learn from it, you’ve lost twice,”
Puryear said. “I think it’s all part of a
journey – the wins and losses themselves
– and often you learn more about
yourself when you lose than when you
win.”
With effective senior leadership and
younger players ready to make an impact,
it’s no wonder Puryear has had
such success. Furthermore, hopefully
this spring’s trials and tribulations have
provided both the men and women
with lessons by which to mature and to
prosper on the tennis court.
Hopefully, their future success won’t
be overlooked.
get away from them when Vermont got
a double from Caroline Goddard and
two RBI singles from Haber and Connolly.
Weigman gave up three runs, one
of them unearned, in six innings pitched.
In game two a seesaw battle took place
as UMBC and Vermont exchanged the
lead on multiple occasions. Gray got the
Retrievers on the board in the fi rst with
an RBI double giving the Retrievers a one
run lead early. In the fourth Vermont took
the lead at 2-1 off of a two run double
by Kern.
Sloppy play by the Catamounts allowed
UMBC to reclaim the lead as
Vermont committed three errors turning
into four black and gold runs. Gray
drove two runs that inning after junior
outfi elder Randi Wiley scored on a wild
pitch. Gray had good performances both
on the mound and at the plate. Gray had
nine strikeouts in seven innings and also
went 3-4 with three RBI’s at the dish. Her
three RBI’s alone outscored the entire Catamount
offensive output as the Retrievers
won 5-2 and split the double header. The
series concluded on Sunday when both
teams faced off in the rubber match at
Archie Post Field.
UMBC for the third straight time in
the series jumped out to an early lead
in the fi rst inning. The Retrievers loaded
the bases with one out and were in position
to have a big inning. Shepherd, Gray
and Shirk all reached base as Fefel drove
in a run and junior catcher Allison Duff
got Shirk to cross home plate off of a RBI
single. The runs scored in the fi rst would
be the only of the game for the Retrievers
as they would have their struggles at the
plate. Catamount pitcher Kern retired the
next 18 batters she faced and put a halt to
UMBC scoring efforts. Vermont chipped
away at the lead in the second and then
scored four runs in the third of Gray, who
pitched 2.2 innings. Weigman came in
relief in the second inning and closed out
the game. The freshman allowed no runs
and two hits but the damage was already
done as UMBC fell to Vermont 5-2. The
loss also had some extra sting to it as
Maine won their series over Hartford with
a 11-1 win on Sunday. The win pushes
the Black Bears conference record to 10-8
while UMBC sits at 9-9 in the AEC.
This sets up a pivotal AEC three game
series at the end of the regular season that
carries a lot of weight. The Retrievers will
play their fi nal AEC regular season series
when they travel to Orono, Maine. This
will determine if their season will continue
as they will play a double header
on Saturday and fi nish up the series on
Sunday with an early 11:00 a.m. start.
Both teams are in a battle for the fourth
spot and this series will hold its share of
drama. If UMBC loses one game out of
the series over the weekend they are out
of the tournament, but if they sweep the
Black Bears they are in. This is a tough order
for the Retrievers and with the series
being on the road it makes the task even
more diffi cult.
Before this, UMBC will play Delware
away on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m.
Tennis falls in America
East Tournament play
Zak Bratcher
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
Two spectacular UMBC seasons
came to unfortunate fi nales this past
weekend as the men’s and women’s
tennis teams both suffered defeats to
Binghamton University in the America
East Conference Tournament at Yale
Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
The No. 2-seeded Retriever men,
hoping to defend last year’s AEC title,
fi nished as runner up in the conference
tournament, defeating No. 3
Stony Brook, 4-3, in the semifi nal
round on Saturday afternoon, but losing
in the championship game to the
No. 1-seeded Bearcats, 4-3, on Sunday.
The UMBC women, also a 2-seed,
suffered a similar 4-3 defeat at the
hands of No. 3 Binghamton in the
semifi nals on Saturday.
After conceding the doubles point
to the Bearcats in the championship
game, UMBC sophomore Chris
Meyer, senior Irfan Shamasdin, and
senior Fernando Ferreira each won
singles matches at the fi rst, third, and
sixth positions, respectively, setting
up a critical match at the fi fth singles
position.
Retriever sophomore Fredi Voorman,
playing at No. 5, held a 5-3
advantage in the third and deciding
set. However, Binghamton freshman
Arnev Jain, who was awarded Most
Outstanding Player of the tournament,
valiantly fought back, winning
four straight games to capture the set
and the match 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. The AEC
title was Binghamton’s fourth in the
past six years.
On Saturday, the UMBC women’s
doubles pairings of freshmen Ana
Mungo and Emily Mannix and of juniors
Joy Adewumi and Cornelia Carapcea
both earned victories over their
Carapcea at 7-5, 7-6, and Mannix
at 7-5, 6-0 – in the fourth and sixth
positions, respectively – were the only
two Retrievers to emerge triumphant
on the singles side, however. Senior
diffi cult three-set losses.
The Binghamton ladies lost 4-2 in
the fi nals on Sunday to No. 1 Boston
The pairings of junior Nick Savage-
club sports update
Club basketball fi nds success
The club basketball team was chartered this
year by President of Basketball Operations
Ozell Sanders and Lead Adviser Kelvin Harris.
The team has already begun league play in
the East Coast Basketball League.
Thus far, the team has competed in the James
Madison Basketball Classic, and the Battle of
Baltimore. In the James Madison Basketball
Classic UMBC fi nished 3-3 and lost in the semifi
nals to eventual champions James Madison.
In the Battle of Baltimore, UMBC was the
runner-up to Morgan State University.
Over the semester UMBC has had notable
wins over UVA, Towson, Georgetown, and
Johns Hopkins. The team currently is looking
to play one more game against rival school
Loyola.
UMBC is led in scoring by the strong play of
Nick Shade (16.3 ppg), Tobechi Mlemchukwu
(11. 4 ppg, 8.6 rpg), Ozell Sanders (12.4 ppg)
and Timi Fadirin (10.2 ppg). In addition, the
team is helped by the defensive presence of
Cameron Moultre and Dapo Lajubutu.
Prepares for America East Tournament
With their ninth straight win the lacrosse
team did two things. They have
won the most consecutive games in
UMBC lacrosse history and stand at fi fth
in the country. The Retrievers beat Vermont
8-6 on last Saturday afternoon.
Vermont came into the game with a
5-10 record and they were looking to
spoil the fi nal regular season game for
the Retrievers on their senior day. The
Catamounts took an early lead as they
outscored UMBC 3-2 in the fi rst period
and started off the second period with
an early score, but the Retrievers fought
back and on three occasions followed a
Vermont goal with two of their own to
give them the 8-6 win.
Three Retrievers got the ball in the net
twice in the game, two being the team’s
leading scorers Terry Kimener and Ryan
Smith. Both also had an assist. The third
though was freshman Dom Scalzo. He
has scored three times this year and
once in each of the last three games.
Also scoring were Matt Latham to ex-
tend his streak to eight games. Latham
now has 20 goals, and freshman Bobby
Stockton scored once. Last week Stockton
scored three times in his breakout
game and followed that performance
with his fourth goal of the season. The
game showed a great defensive effort
by UMBC as they allowed just 20 shots
with the most in any period being six in
the fourth. In the net Jeremy Blevins had
seven saves on just 13 shots on goal.
“It’s a huge advantage to play at home,
we have the second longest home streak
in the nation,” said Bobby Atwell.
Next weekend the Retrievers will be
hosting the America East Conference
tournament and will be playing Binghamton
in the fi rst round game Thursday.
UMBC beat Binghamton earlier in
the season with in a 10-5 win and they
haven’t lost to the Bearcats since 2004,
when they loss was just by one goal.
The Retrievers have beaten Binghamton
six straight times but know they have to
be careful because streaks come to an
end.
“We have to take things one game at a
time and Binghamton is a very good and
improved team. With such short notice
to prepare we just have to make minor
changes and make sure that we are
ready and go out an play good lacrosse,”
said head coach Don Zimmerman.”
The focus right now for the team is
obviously Binghamton, but if they win,
two days later they will play the winner
of No. 2 Albany and No. 3 Stony Brook.
Both teams played close to UMBC, Stony
Brook lost 14-12 and Albany lost 14-10.
Both teams have high scoring offenses.
Both of the last two AEC championship
games have been the match up of
UMBC vs. Albany. Last season, Albany
hosted the tournament and won. Yet
two seasons ago UMBC also hosted and
were victorious. Either way the Retrievers
are not looking at the past and are
only focused on beating Binghamton
right now.
“It is nice that this team has accomplished
something no other team has
accomplished,” said Zimmerman.
Baseball wins four
straight in sweep of
Hartford
Corey Johns
SENIOR STAFF WRITER
As long as UMBC has had a baseball
team, 41 years, the team has never
sweep a four game series until this past
weekend. Earlier in the year UMBC
sweep their fi rst ever series which was
against Navy, which was a two game series,
but this weekend Hartford fell four
times to UMBC. “We’re doing better at
everything right now. We have a solid
nucleus of offense but we’re playing very
good defense and pitching we well with
good command which is key said head
coach John Jancuska.”
Game one of the series was a slugfest
that in the end favored UMBC. Dan
Blewett started the game on the mound,
though he did not pitch great as he gave
up six runs to fall behind 6-1 after four
innings. He fi nally got some run support
as UMBC matched the six runs to get the
lead back.
Austin Drewyer came into the game
with a 9-8 lead in the six and gave up
just one run to close out the game for
the win. Shawn Retz hit is fi rst home
run and he also contributed four RBIs
and 12 player outs. Also, Joe Fowler
went 2-4 with three runs and 4 RBIs.
One of his hits was his sixth home run
of the season. Rich Conlon hit his fi rst
collegiate home run in the game too and
Steve Russo had a solo home run. “It’s
a little overdue but I just had to wait for
it to happen but I wasn’t trying to hit it
said Retz.” In game two of the series Ed
Bach started and looked to be his old
self. He struggles his last few appearances
but he gave up one earned run,
three total in 6.1 innings. Dave Divita
got the win though with non runs given
up in 2.2 innings of work. The game was
tied after the fi fth inning and stayed that
way until the ninth inning, the game
was a seven inning double header game,
when UMBC tallied two runs to get the
5-3 win.
With the fi rst two games ending in
UMBC’s favor the team looked to win its
fi rst four game series as they sent Will
Delawter to the mound, Delawter was
hot from the mound going into the game
as he pitched very well his last two appearances
before this game. He looked
good again in this game as in six innings
he recorded eight strikeouts and only
allowed two runs. R.J. Morse came in
for his fourth save after Delawter’s performance.
“Will is a special competitor.
He is still not 100% because of his knee
surgery in the summer but he’s playing
well. He’s a presence in the batters box
because of his power and high average
but on the mound when he gets his
breaking ball going he is tough to hit
said Jancuska.”
In the game Fowler recorded
his second home run of the series and
Wink Nolan seconded his third double,
one in each game, and his second triple.
In the fi nal game of the series UMBC
looked to do something they never did
in UMBC baseball history: sweep a four
game series ad that is what they did.
Last week Divita pitched his best game
of the season and this week he followed
up with another phenomenal outing. In
six innings he gave up just seven hits
and four runs. When he came out of the
game after giving up two runs early in
the seventh round he had a 7-4 lead but
Drewyer gave up three runs to tied the
game. Luckily UMBC got one run in the
tenth and held on for the win.
In the tenth inning, Delawter was the
fi rst Retriever at bat and he delivered. He
hit a homerun to give UMBC the eventual
winning run. Also Steve Russo hit a
home run in the game four his third of
the season and second of the series.
“It is always about pitching and I am
confi dent that our pitchers are ready
and should be able to compete against
Albany said Jancuska.”
With the win UMBC has improved
to a 16-23 record and most importantly
8-8 in the conference, third place and
three games behind Stony Brook with a
four game series still to go with them.
UMBC has eleven games left in the regular
season and needs to win nine to go
.500 in the regular season.
Prior to the series UMBC fell to George
Washington 11-3 in a game Fowler
“The Penn State relays is
the biggest event on the east coast,
there are 300 colleges and 500 high
schools competing. It is very good
in a lot of ways because we get to
see recruits and our athletes can
see Olympians compete right before
their own eyes.”
Another season best relay time for
the women’s team came in the 4x400
a seventh place fi nish, and Rachelle
Wright fi nished 15th with a 12.83
throw.
The Men’s team only
competed in three events, all being
