. . . AND IN THE BEGINNING . . .
November 4, 1975 Thirteen music educators meet in the home of Morna-June Morrow.
Eight members are elected to the first Executive of the newly formed
Manitoba Orff Chapter. MOC is born!
For those of you who are relative newcomers to the Orff scene, or those longtime members who
love to reminisce, a flashback to the development of this thriving chapter of MUSIC FOR
CHILDREN - CARL ORFF CANADA - MUSIQUE POUR ENFANTS follows.
The 16 original members of 1975 grew to 247 members in 2010 for the 21st National
Conference held in Winnipeg reflecting tremendous growth in membership due to several
factors:
 1. The MOC has provided reading sessions, workshops, and mini-courses
and reading sessions during its thirty-five years.
 2. The MOC has hosted four national conferences of MUSIC FOR CHILDREN -
CARL ORFF CANADA - MUSIQUE POUR ENFANTS in 1976, 1986, 1998, and
2010.
 3. The MOC has been affiliated with the MANITOBA MUSIC EDUCATORS'
ASSOCIATION for many years, and together offer Special Area Group (SAG)
"Tempo" Conferences in the fall.
 4. There are several School Divisions within the province who will hire only
elementary music specialists who have some Orff Levels training.
 5. The University of Manitoba, School of Music, under the direction of Professor
Ursula Rempel, developed a well established three-level Summer School Course
leading to Orff Teacher Certification. In 1995, Professor Paul Paterson took
over the position as Coordinator of the Summer Orff Levels courses. From 1996-
1998, Ruth Wiwchar coordinated the program. Joan Linklater began
coordinating the program in 2000.
 6. Applications for the Helen Neufeld Memorial Scholarship are available for
members wishing to enroll in the University of Manitoba Summer Orff Courses.
 7. The MOC has an extensive Resources Lending Library available to all MOC
members.
 8. There is growing public awareness of the value of the Orff-Schulwerk through:
[a] MOC's sponsoring of "Children's Day" in English (Winnipeg and Brandon) et en
français, "Journée pour Enfants" (Winnipeg)
[b] Music education programs (including concepts of the Orff-Schulwerk),
incorporated in the Department of Education Music Curriculum
2

[c] The appearance of Orff-Schulwerk classes in various music festivals across the
province
[d] Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music Preparatory Division offers "Music For
Children" programs with Jewel Casselman as Program Coordinator
[e] The Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts has offered "Music For Children"
courses with several MOC members teaching over the years: Peggy Emmond,
Anne Gudmundson, Joan Linklater, Sister Dolores Schneider, Dianne Sjoberg,
Ruth Wiwchar and others.
[f] YOU, the members of the Manitoba Orff Chapter are exposing thousands of
children in your daily teaching to the joys of the Orff-Schulwerk.
January 1982 Raffle sponsored by the MOC to raise $750.00 for Arthur A. Leach Orff
Ensemble's performance at the 1982 Edmonton National Conference.
February-May 1986, four sessions with local clinicians teaching pieces by all 12 conference
clinicians were run in order to prepare for the first-ever Chapter sharing session at the Ninth
National Conference held in Winnipeg.
The MOC banner was designed and executed by Morna-June Morrow, Helen Neufeld and Joan
Linklater and first appeared at the 1986 National Conference. It has appeared at all National
Canadian Conferences since then, and was seen at the American Orff-Schulwerk Association National
Conference in Minneapolis.
Chapter letterhead stationery was designed - MOC pens were distributed to those members
attending MOC workshops.
Conference "Opening Ceremonies" video tape.
Establishment of the Manitoba Orff Chapter Lending Library for Manitoba Orff Chapter
members. Originally stocked with materials from the estate of the late Helen Neufeld, more
items were added by Doreen Hall, Founder and Patron of Carl Orff Canada, and a great many
more items were added by Morna-June Morrow upon her retirement. Others items have been
added by individual Orff Chapter members. The Library facilitator since its inception in 1994
has been Morna-June Morrow.
Established the Morna - June Morrow Award for Excellence in Music Education in Manitoba in
1998.
In 2000, we created the position of Advocacy in response to a concern from membership
regarding changes to music programming in schools, and the need for a new Manitoba
Department of Education Music Curriculum. Through the Advocacy position, MOC Executive
facilitated awareness of the Orff philosophy through various initiatives and associations with
music and arts associations, and responded to individual member's needs for support for music
programming.
Establishment of the Manitoba Orff Chapter web site in 2003.
In 2005, "Children's Day" expanded to rural Manitoba by adding a second location in Brandon.
