there in the Bible.
Secondly, we’re a secular nation. Our original
motto was Latin for “of many, one.” We are
not as Iran or Afghanistan where your religious
beliefs are commanded by a bunch of nuts living
by a book of tales first spun by illiterate
goat herders who didn’t know where the sun
went at night. We are free here.
You’d be wise to keep that in mind. Pray in
your church, pray in your home; public space
belongs to us all.
Finally, I saw that line that always ruffles
my feathers, “there are no atheists in fox holes.”
Ma’am, as a veteran of the U.S. Army I will tell
you unequivocally that there are MANY atheists
in foxholes. And in bunkers, tanks, armored
personnel carriers and helicopters.
We serve our country, not your imaginary
god. There are a lot of us in trucks as well.
Thanks for letting me set you straight.
Reader doesn’t understand twin 33
vs. 53-foot argument being made
The argument is made that 28 footers
brought about 53s, and 33s will be competition
for 53s and result in 57s or even longer. Now
57s are used in a couple of states.
Is this a “red herring”? It’s my understanding
freight or anything like even three or four pallets.
[This is] based on price breaks for more
freight. In other words, that would reduce the
revenue for a given trailer. So I don’t get this
33 or 33 x 2 versus 53-foot argument.
Thanks for keeping us informed.
Semi-retired business exec finds
carriers not giving him a chance
Dear Lyndon and Jack: In your most recent
edition of, The Trucker (Dec. 1-14. 2015), you
discuss the shortage of truck drivers. I thought
you might find my story, research, and discussions
with drivers and recruiters along with my
business background interesting.
Let me state, “right off the bat,” that I am
graduating from CDL school on my own, at the
end of this month! Why?
1. At age 63, I’m quasi retired and bored as
a former Fortune 100 senior exec, along with
being a business owner for over nine years.
2. I’m in excellent health, no issues and
used to getting my hands dirty. No “prima donna
attitudes” here.
3. Wonderful children that are all educated,
employed and living around the US. I understand
with their demands of work and family
life — coming to see dad is tough.
4. I’m Single and no real need to be home
on a regular basis — thus the interest in an
OTR position.
My other options are to join a woodworking
