This was the first time we have celebrated International Mother Tongue day at this school. It was great to see so many parents coming in to share their Mother tongues language with the students. Thank you very much for giving up your time to help us. We had a number of excellent learning activities throughout the day and the children gained a lot from it. The assembly, which Mr. Lowery arranged, had a song in many languages beautifully arranged by Ms. Judy, our music teacher. There was a presentation from United Nations about International Mother Tongue Day and a wonderful video of our children welcoming each other in many different languages.
Tenby Today, the World Tomorrow Tenby Higher Education Fair (UK and Australia) Tenby Ipoh’s Sixth Formers attended another major event in their higher education calendar – the Higher Education Fair staged by the UK and Australian universities. More than 21 universities were represented at the Fair held on 24th February in the Tenby Schools Auditorium in Ipoh. Here are some comments from the Sixth Formers who attended the 2-hour session : “It was an enlightening experience for me. I am very interested in archaeology. My pathway to this ultimate destination is of course the study of history at A-level, something I am very happy to do at Tenby Ipoh. I spoke to reps from various universities in Australia. I may follow up my enquiries with the University of Tasmania which has a History and Archaeology degree.” Emily (Cohort 13) “My interest is in Psychology and Law. I have made enquiries with the following universities: the University of East Anglia, Teeside University and BBP University. I discovered that a credit in Maths at IGCSE/SPM level is a requirement for most universities if you want to do Law or Psychology. The minimum A-level entry requirement for East Anglia is AAB, while Teeside accepts any three passes at A Level.” – Shuang Ling (Cohort 12) “I had a long chat with the representatives from York St John University. I explored the possibility of doing medicine. I learnt that the entry requirement is AAB for medicine with a score of 8.0 on the IELTS. Not easy, I thought. So, I asked about the other option I had in mind – Sports Science and Physiotherapy. I was told that we need a minimum of BBB for this option. Sports Science can be taken separately. Its weightage is stronger, hence we need an IELTS score of 8.0 as well. Physiotherapy is a softer option where a lower IELTS score is accepted.“ – Wei Yang (Cohort 11) “I spent some time discussing the medical degree course at the University of Adelaide. I was told they need three As to admit a student to the course. I seem to like Adelaide because it is a smaller city than Melbourne and Sydney and it seems culturally more pleasing for my tastes. I like challenges. So, when they told me that in addition to the three As, I needed to cross two further hurdles, I was not daunted. Yes, I like the idea of the Aptitude Test and the Interview. The AT has to be taken in KL and the interview is held in Singapore.” – Davasooria (Cohort 11) “I explored two options with the University of Sheffield. One course was the Visual Animation degree. The minimum qualification is three passes at A Level with a minimum of C for English and Maths at ICGSE /SPM level. I also liked the hybrid course titled History, Society and Languages. This kind of hybrid course is increasingly popular in UK universities and I am thinking seriously about this option.” – Derek (Cohort 12) “The University of Tasmania seems to fascinate me. I have heard about the scenic beauty of the island of Tasmania as well as about the lower cost of living there. The University offers an unlimited number of scholarships to the tune of 25% off the tuition fees. My interest is in Medicine and Biomedical science. The entry requirement for medicine is stiff – three As but entry to Biomedical Science can be secured with less than three As. The interesting point is that students who excel at Biomedicine can obtain transfers to the medicine degree course after Year 1. ” – Shahmina Gul (Cohort 11)
